ST. LOUIS, MO (November12, 2002) The results of thebilliard industrys first everpay-per-view event haveexceeded the expectationsof satellite distributor DISH
Network and cable service pay-per-view provider iN Demand. Althoughthe final numbers for the 2002 U. S. Open 9-Ball Championship are stillbeing tabulated, initial system reports reveal a buy rate that warrants futurebilliard programming on the pay-per-view platform. Its all good news, says Rob Sykora, president of BilliardClub network, the events executive production anddistribution company. Our projected numbers were righton with the results of the pay-per-view and our partnersDISH Network and iN Demand are asking us for futureevents to market to their collective audience of over 56million households.Preliminary reports for the U.S. audience indicate totaltelevision viewers of 6,000 to 8,000 for the live event. I read the opinion in the last On The Break From Jeff Boucher. I had theprivilege of meeting Jeff in North Dakota acouple of years back. Hes one great player. His experience is right on. What prompted meto write on this subject was Jeffs article butalso one night this guy curious about poolasked me where he might go to watch goodplayers in a tournament, a delight for him. Thisguy used to play and wanted to get back in toit. Pretty neat I thought until I had to send himsome place to watch. I couldnt recommendone place. I couldnt send him to watch a Btournament, which excluded any top players. That night thats all that washappening. If I sent him to one he would have thought I sent him on a wildgoose chase or didnt know what I was talking about. In fact I could notsend him to a weekly showcase type tournament until days later on aSaturday morning or Sunday early evening, or too another metropolitanarea 250 miles away. When I started playing the weekly tournaments it was fun to go to all ofthem that I could go to. No restricted type tournaments at all. Anyone couldplay. Playing against the top players was a treat. You could challenge yourself every night of the week without putting up $50 or $100 to gamble withthem. Getting to play top players was the only complaint 15 years agobecause you would have to gamble with them to play them. (Now peopleshy away from a $5 dollar entry to play top players) The sport was thriving. It took me awhile before I could compete with A players. In one prestigiousweekly tournament in the early 80s it took me over 50 consecutive entries(every week for one year) before I broke though and won. In regionaltournaments it took me 16 tries at $35-$50 entries before I got into themoney and longer to play a championship match. Years back you did nothear complaining about the top players. I know it is tough to play A playersand playing better players has problems if you let it get in the way. I didntlet it get in the way and paid my dues and took my licks. I am better off asa pool player for it now.In twenty plus years I have seen the bar of excellence has lowered in ourarea. There sure seems to have been more great players playing regularly
U.S. Open Pay-Per-View Exceeds Expectations
the United Arab Emirates, with other markets still pending, reported Sykora. For the first time out, theevent as a whole was asuccess for all involvedincluding the players, thepromoter and the sponsors.Producing the live eventopened many doors andcreated additional opportunities for our partnership group to emerge as a
key player in the production and distribution of billiard sportsprogramming, said Pat Fleming, president Accu-Stats. Andthis worldwide distribution is great exposure for the U. S.Open as a premier professional pool event. The one-hour highlight programs can also be seen in BCnaffiliate clubs nationwide on Billiard Club television. BCtv isthe in-house video entertainment show produced by BCnexclusively for the network of affiliate locations. BCtv issponsored in part by Accu-Stats, the American PoolplayersAssociation, Aramith Belgian Billiard Balls, Billiards.com,Billiards Digest, Iwan Simonis, and Matchroom Sport.

years ago. The skills of the top players all have fallen off. I have seen greatplayers lose their will to be at the peak because they have few avenues toplay. I heard a B player say the other day, If I get better then I will have toquit playing. He knew that pool playing opportunities decline once youreach an A status.Pool is bigger than only having restricted tournaments. Pool is in danger oflosing good players to mediocrity and surrender to something less. Whatwould people in other sports have done like Kobi Bryant, Pete Sampres,Barry Bonds, Tiger Woods if they couldnt play??? Players dont be afraidto play. Get pool back on a pathway where people improve, achieve andimportantly pool and billiards is honored and revered just like any othersport. OTB

About the AuthorDean Shane Cassem
Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father fromLebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stickat age 15. His father and grandfather before him hadCassems restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb ofCharleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. Fromage 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn,Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placedsecond in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966).In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the barsand out of the rooms where stiffer competition would havehoned his game. His stroke subsided completely until hismid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coorsstatewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981.Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an
interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80s, his game went dormantagain until he sold his business and returned to school. At age 48, he completed hisundergraduate work in theology, and earned Masters degrees in Marriage & FamilyCounseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skillsand has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shanehas five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough, Resurrection,Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstoresby November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; SkinnyMalone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counselingpractice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for hisongoing Carter Keating Series. Shane has one daughter, Vickie Linn, a son-n-law, Brian, and a precious granddaughter, Shelbie Linn. You may visit Shanes web sites at;www.carterkeatingnovels.com or creativecounselingconcepts.com
BREAKTHROUGHA Short Story by: Dean Shane Cassem
PART 6In Part One, New friend Dave Wakefield introduces young Carter Keatingto pocket billiards for the first time. Keating watches captively as Wakefieldand Jimmy The Stick Gadwell play nine ball in Willies Pool Palace. PartOne ends as Gadwell completes a spectacular nine ball session withWakefield, smirks cockily as Wakefield stomps off, then pulls up a chairnext to young Keating for a chat. In Part Two, Wakefield and Tools Spinardchallenge Gadwell and young Keating to an eight-ball match. Keatingagrees, fails to make a shot the entire time, and faces the ridicule of Spinard,Wakefield, Gadwell and the other patrons in Willies Pool Palace. YoungKeating swears that he will learn to play the game, and play it well. Part IIIdescribes young Keatings rapid development as a player and, hisintroduction to Charley Sturgis, an old and wise mentor, who guides him tomaturity, both as a pool player and as an individual. Part IV finds Keatingand Charley Sturgis in Willies Pool Palace dialoguing over a cup of coffee, talking about the rudiments of the game, and the qualities of real winners.Winter comes. Keating drops into Willies after a winning match at adowntown parlor and whips up on Dave Wakefield in a well-played nine ballmatch. Afterwards, Russell, the Thin Man, Case, offers to back him againstnone other than Jimmy the Stick Gadwell, the very person who had actuallytutored him on the tables. In Part V, the Stick Gadwell takes a quick lead.Keating begs off to the restroom, where he has a needed talk with himself, settles himself down, then returns to the ridicule of the crowd but with arenewed spirit. Gadwell makes the nine and moves to a three game lead.YO HO! TOOLS SPINARD ROARED. GONNA ROCK and roll thisweekend. Be taking bread home to Mama and the children. Lookin good,Stick! He yelled. Gadwell had moved ahead three games to none, andSpinard obviously had been betting with the Stick. On the next break, the Stick made three balls, made a straight in on thetwo and ran out the table.
Four games to none.Another monumental break later, he was left with a two-ball
combination on the nine. Showing his missing tooth, he popped in thewinner without hesitation.
Five games to none.In the next game, he hammered the break and made two balls but
got snookered snug against the one ball. With no practical way out, hedrove the cue ball through the cluster and let fly a random, low percentageslop shot. Balls flew everywhere. The nine, having a mind of its own, flipped and flopped and eventually slopped in the upper corner pocket.
Six games to none.Thin Man and Charley Sturgis watched without expression.
Gadwell put his shoulder into the break and followed through so completelyon the next break that the cue stick looked like it tailgated the cue ball halfway down the table. When the cue ball exploded into the one, it wentairborne about six inches, then came down on top of the seven ball, andskipped off recklessly.
Straight into the side pocket.Gadwell had scratched.I finally had my chance. Remember the battles with yourself,
Carter, Charley Sturgis said.Nod.

GET YOUR GAME BACK IN TUNE FOR THE NEW SEASON
Congratulations toeveryone who made allsix balls in six pockets, last months shot. Youcan start the set up ofthis shot by placing thecue ball the same aslast months shot. Thecue ball is dead centerof the table width waysand halfway betweenthe side pocket and thediamond. You nowfreeze the one and two-ball to the cue ball.Align the centers alongthe dashed lines asshown. The next ball toset up is the three-ball.The three is set updead center widthways, and two ballsabove the center of thefoot spot. Now align thefour-ball along thedashed line. Its nowtime to check thecarom angle that thethree-ball takes off ofthe four-ball. Thecarom angle should bealong the dashed lineto pocket C. If it isnt
move the three farther or closer to the foot spot. Now re-align the four tothe three. To execute the shot aim the cue ball full at the three-ball. Now hitthe cue ball one tip below center with a moderate stroke. All four ballsshould disappear from the table. Enjoy this one.

Concentrationby: Don Cheese AkerlowFocus totally on your game. Everything else shouldnt matter. Play the table notthe player. Distractions, noises, loud music shouldnt affect you. Its like they arenot even there. Time will stand still while you are in total concentration. Concentratingtotally while playing pool should be second only to dead stroke, although playingwith concentration is easier to achieve. With total concentration your game can goto a new level with consistency and performance, then reaching dead stroke, itslike a walk in the park. For those of you who have not reached dead stroke, it is playing unconsciously. Allthe knowledge that you have learned about pool, whether it is banks, English orshot making, is executed correctly. You reach a new level of performance. Its oneof the best feelings that you can achieve while playing pool. OTB
Finally Mallott Cashes InBy: Clay Skidmore
Spokane, WashingtonOn the weekend of November 9-10 McQs Billiards hosted another classB 9-ball tournament. The event was an easy sellout and many foundthemselves on the outside looking in because they waited too long to pay.Remember these are very popular events and the best way to make sureyou play is to pay in advance. The tournament attracted 64 players and ittook a long day Saturday to dwindle the field to 16. The players loved theidea of the early pay out. All 16 players that remained for Sunday were paidlast place money Saturday night. For those players that were a little shorton cash they loved this idea. And from a business stand point it also makescents.Stacy Mallott finally broke the door down and got a long awaited class Bwin. Having been the favorite in many tournaments before I was extremelyhappy to see him win. After coming close in the past people alwaysquestioned me on allowing him to play. But I never thought it would be fairto take it away from him because he got close. Good job Stacy, you workedhard and got there.Stacy opened his play with a first round win over Russ Hoyt 7-3. He thenwent on to defeat Harold Smith 7-2, Tony Etchechoury 7-4, and Yo Jones7-2. He then suffered his first and only loss over the weekend at the hands,or should I say cue, of Joe Horner 4-7. Sent to the B side he went on tostop Ed Hobbs 7 match win streak 7-2. And Tim Guimerezs 8 match winstreak 7-2. With only Harold Prine in his way he gutted out a 7-6 win to getthe rematch with Joe Horner. Once he got to the finals Stacy played greatwinning both matches 7-2 and 7-0. Thanks again to all that played and wewill see you soon.1st $700 Stacy Mallott + side pot $3202nd $525 Joe Horner3rd $375 Harold Prine4th $250 Tim Guimerez5th $180 Ed Hobbs, Brett Ecstrom7th $125 Ben Flores, Scott Chandler9th $70 Taylor Ingram, Yo Jones,

Spirit of ChristmasBy now, & every year at this time, our thoughts have turned towhat gifts we are going to give to our loved ones; we even, perhaps, have already thought about the little office exchanges that aretraditional in many places. In the crush and bustle of shopping
now, it is so easy to lose sight of all those whocannot participate or can barely cover small simplethings for their children. You know the workingpoor among us, who, try as they might, can barelymake ends meet, with nothing left over.Poolplayers are, by nature, a pretty generous &good-hearted group of people. We give time, knowledge, sometimes money, sometimes a place tostay and sometimes some of the equipment we have
tired of or moved on from. In Helena, that generosity manifestseach year in a great turnout (& it is growing!) for the MarineCorps League Toys for Tots pool tournament. The entry fees, theraffle proceeds and ½ of the 50-50 drawing all go to that cause. It is a really fun day and it makes us all happy to be able todonate to a wonderful cause and be able to play pool, too! Thisyear, the tournament is being held December 14, at the ValleyHub here in Helena, who has been a generous sponsor. One greatway to brighten someones Christmas!I have worked with several groups of individuals who annuallyadopt a family. Local Human Services agencies are contactedfor the ages, sizes and gender of the family members. The work-groups all pitch in to their ability and provide toys, clothing, food for the children & parents. The day of wrapping everythingup is always such a fun day! The entire process is doneanonymously. The group requesting sizes, etc, never know thenames of the families/members. Those receiving never know whowanted to share the spirit of giving with them, encompassing thetruest spirit of giving without worries about too little, too much, not just right anything we can do will be appreciated. For atleast this one day, we can help someone shouldering a burden toobig for them. This year, our local poolplayers generosity isenfolding 2 families with small children. Can you imagine how many families could have a Christmas if all ofus poolplayers gave just 1 gift each through this type of process? The cost of 1 night of league play. Wow.Well, I wish you the Spirit of love, and the joy of simple things.

The Maltese Bar & Grill in Kelso, WA hosted their secondOpen 9 Ball Tournament of the year on November 16th &17th. The field of 66 playersis a testament to theMaltese excellent locationin the I-5 corridor, one milefrom exit 38. Top playersfrom Oregon, Washingtonand Canada came tocompete on the 4 x 8Valley tables for the topprize of $1000.00.With the help of MikeMcEwen, TournamentDirectors Rob Cameronand Ivan Doty kept playmoving in the doubleelimination tournament with Saturday races to 7 and themoney round races on Sunday to 8.Glenn Atwell proved again that his deliberate, methodicalstyle makes him one of the top players in the Northwestas he DOMINATED play in the $1000.00 addedtournament. While playing on tables newly covered withGranito Tournament 2000 cloth, Glenn dispatched allchallengers including wins on Sunday over Bob Ohashi8-3, Rick Hodge 8-2, Bill Rosenberry 8-4 for the pointand Pon Kanlaya 13-6 in the championship. In thechampionship set, Pon took an early lead 2-0 beforeGlenn put him away, winning 13 of the next 17 games. The quality of the field was evident in the second roundwhen the upper half of the 64 person bracket had thesematch ups; Stan Tourangeau versus Pat Schumacher,Ivan Doty versus Mike Braun, Marlon Oliveros versusKris Iverson, Rafael Martinez versus Bob Foutch, FrankMartin versus Bill Rosenberry, Raul Abenajour versusJohn Ward, Dave Reavis versus Tony Balzer anddefending champion Mike Vidas versus Mike Jensen. Theplay through the draw in the upper bracket may haveproved to be too much of a grind on the competitors asboth Glenn and Pon advanced from the lower half of thebracket.Pon Kanlaya displayed amazing stamina in thetournament. He was sent to the one loss side of thebracket by Rick Hodge in the 3rd round. He played his 5th
and last match Saturday night at about midnight only toreturn Sunday morning for a 10:00 AM match, the first ofseven on the day. In perhaps the best game of thetournament, with the score tied 7-7 against the formidableRafael Martinez, Pon faced a near impossible cut onthe 2-ball. With poise and concentration, Pon cut the 2-ball in only to face a cross corner bank on the 3-ball.The 3-ball went into the center of the pocket and Poncontinued to run the rack to end Rafaels tournamentrun in 4th place. Pon dispatched six opponents Sundayincluding wins over Kevin Fong 8-3, Stan Tourangeau 8-6, Dave Reavis 8-4, Rick Hodge 8-6, Rafael Martinez 8-7 and Bill Rosenberry 8-6.For Rosenberry, his match with Rafael Martinez to getto the point match, was evidence of his straight shooting,
intense desire and ability to focus. Bill played perfect poolto jump out to a 5-0 lead. In the sixth rack it looked as if
he would continue the runand make it 6-0, buthooked himself on the 6-ball. Martinez would winthe rack but Bills hugelead would prove to be toomuch to overcome as hewon 8-6.On Saturday, it looked likeit would be all RafaelMartinez as he lost onlyone game in threematches. His wins in frontof a packed house were7-0 over Tony Newman, 7-
1 Over Bob Foutch and 7-0 over Kris Iverson. In the matchwith Kris, Rafael broke and ran the first four racks. In thefifth rack he made four balls on the break including the 1ball and 2 ball, but hung the 3 ball on a backwards cut.Kris was unable to complete the rack and Rafael finishedthe set. It took ten minutes to play the entire set.Defending champion Mike Vidas finished tied for 7/8th
place after losing to his traveling partner Woody Nielsenon Sunday 6-8. Nielsen finished tied for 5/6th.With five women in the draw, owner Bruce Birchfield madea surprise announcement Saturday afternoon that hewould add $100.00 to the top woman player. Hsin Huang, recently from Taipei, not only collected the $100.00, butalso collected $50.00 for finishing tied for 13th-16th. Afterlosing her first match to John Ward 6-7, she reeled offfour straight wins against Lee Wright, Max Sena, JustinLilje and Kris Iverson.Congratulations go to Bruce Birchfield for his attention todetail in making the Maltese an excellent place to playtournament pool. Along with the new cloth and the addedprize money, he also provided brand new balls and coffeefor the players. Glenn Atwell was one of many playerswho complimented Bruce when he said I wish hadequipment like this to play on!Thanks to Bruce and his staff for hosting the tournamentsfor us. We are looking forward to the next one. Last month when Cheese came to visit myshop he saw us working some miracles withcue tips and his curiosity got the best of him.He made the mistake of asking me a questionand had to go through my full speal on tippinga cue stick. He asked me to tell you all aboutit.I started tipping cues for my Dad, JoeSheehan when I was ten years old, some fifty-four years ago. Dad started tipping cues atthe Brunswick Chicago office in 1918,
(hundreds of cues every day) and he hated it. It became my job. 25¢ for atip only, 50¢ for point and tip and 75¢ with a buck horn ferrell. I did about 20cues a week and in 1948 that was a lot of money for a fifth grader.Dad had shown me all he knew and I finished up with a very good-lookingtip. In those days the tips were shaped like a gum drop and you had to beatthem with a hammer to get them to the right size, glue them on, trim them, shape them and burnish the sides with a leather burnisher. The big problemwas the glue. The adhesives were not able to withstand the shock that atip gets.I started with the Hyde glue that you heated in a double boiler. If you tippedcues all day long every day it was great. But I only worked on cues on theweekend. You had to wait a long time for the glue to heat and then it wouldmildew after two weeks and you had to start over mixing and boiling. Then we started using Lepages Mucilage glue, easy, but one out of five felloff after one week in play. When the cues come back for retipping therewas no leather stuck to the point. Bad sign.Brunswicks Ku glue was my next try. It was a little better, one in ten afterone week and one in five came back with some leather and one in ten witha tip worn down to the point itself. I tipped all of Willie Mosconis shaftswhen he came to Portland. He was very fussy about how it was done andI learned a lot from him. Jimmy Caras showed me that a few holes in thetip and point would give the glue a better chance to penetrate and built agreater surface of glue.Brunswick discontinued Ku glue and we were back to square one, Elmersglue, Tight bond, Contact cement, none of them worked as well. EastmanKodak came up with a glue for the military to glue circuit boards that broke, back together. A little tube cost Uncle Sam $90. It was the best thing tocome along but besides tips it stuck fingers to tips and fingers to fingers. Itwas also hard to get. Since we covered all of the pool tables on all of themilitary bases, sometimes I could talk one of the Electronic Repair peopleout of a used tube.Shortly, it came out on the market under many various names but it was aSuper Glue. Those that were available didnt work the same. I found the fithad to be perfect and that wasnt always the case with a cue tip. I finallyfound a glue made by a company called Satalite City.Next issue How the Magic Works (see Ad page 17)

Still the Best...Raymond Ceulemans
from: AZBilliards.com
Sunday night in front of a great crowd and live on television, sixty five yearold Raymond Ceulemans again showed that he is the best billiard playerever. He had to come back from a one set deficit against strong Colombian
player Jaime Bedoya who hada ten points rally in the first set.Mr. Ceulemans had a 3.0000average in the last two sets toovercome the ColombianVeteran two sets to one. On theother table, number two rankedplayer in the World SemihSayginer beat Dutchman andteam mate Clemie van Wanrooijin two sets, to setup the finalmatch against the master. The final match was all Sayginerin the first two sets as he took
the lead in the best out of five sets match with 15-4 and 15-6 scores.Ceulemans, having the Aruban crowd on his side, came back with a 12points rally to break his own 11 points record set on Friday and winningthree straight sets 15-4, 15-8 and 15-5.It was a great tournament in front of a knowledgeable crowd. For morethan an hour after the final match, the players showed trick shots and gavetips to all present. The highlight during the trick shots was Semih Sayginerand Luis Aveiga from Ecuador who said in his interview that the only winnerwas the crowd who could enjoy El Maestro de los Maestros still at hispeak.Next year, the organizers are thinking of a sixteen player field from fourcontinents.

The Pool Whisperer . . . . . Lance McGillThe Three Motivations
Settle in,cause Imgonna getright to thet h i n g . L a s t
months article has gotten manykinds of responses. Most of themare from people wanting to learnmore about me and about pool. Those people and myself are gettinit done. Others are having adifferent response, and I have aparagraph of text especially foryou. Listen......no one that ismiserable about the article hascontacted me. No one has askedme what I think in regards to whatwas said. One young man went sofar as to say to Jay, I bet youre sorryyou said those things about Lance, huh? He remains anonymous inthis writing and hes the perfectexample of what I want to illustrate. He came to my school with afriend. He left and told everyone thatI refused to teach him. He neverasked me if I would, all that he wasinterested in was having me showhim how well I play. He came herebecause two different people toldhim stories of how many racks I hadrun for them during a class. One in9-ball and the other story in 1-pocket. So now he has even moreinfo and becomes even morenegative? I dont make sales calls
with my skill and every student Ihave I completely enjoy. I intend tomaintain that standard for myselfand the people that workout here. There is a lot of negativity aroundthis and no one is coming directlyto me. (There are even parts of thenegativity that Im fully responsiblefor and Id like to tell you about that -all you gotta do is come and ask.) Im hearing second hand about howI cant play, and action, and ...takinme up on it, and on and on. Oneman is skilled enough and hasenough seasoning to offer a closed-door session. Now, that guy knows some stuff! Do any of you know about the oldthunderbird car with the suicidedoors? Thats the kind of doors Iput on the school. Suicide doors - even if that chaps your hide yougotta admit its funny. So for younew people that are not coming hereto learn because youre hearing allof the nonsense. Come and askme. Ill tell you what part is true andwhat isnt. I dont run the ad in ONTHE BREAK so that itd be moredifficult to find me. What I will sayabout it herein is simply this. Noneof them said that Im The bestplayer that you have ever seen. They said that They have everseen. Beyond this I have nointention of discussing with youwhat someone else thinks. Im
not an angry man and you dont haveto agree with me to be at the school. My school is an open forum forthought. Over the next few monthsI am going to tell you how I got suchan extraordinary level of skill. It isnot a pretty story and I am certainthat you would not exchange yourpresent level of skill for what I havelived. Before we get to the exciting part ofthis let me first give you thepromised high english or followinformation. For the basics you cango to any book. Follow is the easieststroke to learn because its what thecue ball would do naturally if leftalone. (But we dont leave it alonedo we?) for those of you that arenew to pool all you need to get anunderstanding of is the importanceof adjusting for english in yourbridge hand instead of raising orlowering the butt end of the cuestick. Most raise the bridge so thatthe cue tip is above the center of thecue ball. (This takes the palm andmeat of their hand off of the table.)Once youre skilled, that will workfine. While youre new, learn to getlow or high english from you bridgehand as it rests flat on the table. For the rest of you world-beaters,heres the high top technique for themonth. Place an object ballapproximately 1 and 1/2 ball widthsfrom the long rail and halfway
between the corner pocket and thefirst diamond. Cue ball placementis as follows: line your cue stick upwith the object ball and the firstdiamond past the opposite sidepocket-place your cue ball alongthat line a distance from the rail thatyou are comfortable using FLAT railbridge. Now use high right or leftEnglish and be generous with thespeed that you choose. Either rightaway or within a few feel strokesyoull find the cue ball taking on thesame effect that we would wantwith draw - except that we donthave to risk the miscue that oftencomes with long draw shots! Asyou begin to master this shot beginmoving the object ball further fromthe rail. Then blend that with movingthe cue ball up and down the rail. In going up the rail youll find thisstroke more difficult and down therail itll be easier. It is possible touse this technique with the cue ballas far up the rail as you want to go.Technically we are not using follow, were using spin and a perfectamount of follow and speed. Theshot seems to work best at a touchabove center. And even if you uselow, youll need so much less low, that miscues will become nearlynonexistent on this type of shot. In

WashingtonState was represented by 4 teams, all of them skilled, competitiveplayers, who had already taken tophonors in their regional TitleholdersTournaments.True to form, all the playersrepresented their state withexcellence, bringing their best to thetables, and all finished in the top ten.Congratulations are in order for allthe teams- Wassup, of Jacks

well-rounded team, withenthusiasm to spare. Theymanaged to stay in the winnersbracket until Saturday morning,
when they went up a Boston areateam, Expo Bound, who movedthem into the losers bracket.
Undaunted, and with spirit, the teamcontinued winning, confident thatthey would come back. It was lateSaturday night when they met theMassachusetts team again, thistime in the fight for the first prizeposition. It was truly an East/Westshowdown, and despite the latehours, teams from California,Arizona, Oregon and Washingtonrallied around Medieval, cheeringthem on until the final match. One of the best matches Ive everwatched, remarked one player. Ahill-hill match, and both teams givingit all they had.In the end, it was Billy Barrows ofMedieval who shot the winning eightball for the national title, $10,000.00in cash, and lifetime bragging rights. In addition, the singles tournaments
also saw Washington statevictories- Butch Flegal tookfirst, in the singlestournament for 2, 3 &4 ratedplayers, Bill Waldo tooksecond, and second placein the 5, 6, and 7s race wentto Rauol Abenojar. Thanks to all theWashington TAP playerswho have made this aleague to be proud of.Youre all winners. With ball in hand, I studied the one closely and eyed the two then strokedthe one and rolled down to an angle shot on the two. Completely focused,I made the two and came off the rail just enough to stick on the three, thenran the table. I breathed a sigh of relief. Game one was behind me.
Six games to one. While Eddy Cooksey set up the next rack, I glanced over to the
Stick, Gadwell. He had his back to me, sipping on a cup of coffee. Hishead was down, his eyes on the cup, his body language defensive.
Cooksey nodded. The rack was ready.Aligning myself to the right of center, I flexed my knees and eyed the oneball closely. Then with a perfect bead, I drew back my cue and whippedmy left arm forward with such precision that the cue ball met the head ofthe rack as though a bazooka had shot through it. Five of the nine objectballs dropped off the table. It was a spectacular break with one exception. The cue ball, after its wild reckless ride, parked at the back end of the tableagainst the rail while the object ball sat on the spot at the other end of thetable.
I felt a lump in my throat and reminded myself to keep my attentionon my game and nothing else. Blocking out everything else from my mindI scanned the table and eyed the shot.Gadwells gonna bury him after this, someone said behind me.
Decision time.Go for it? Or should I push out and hope that Gadwell missed the
shot and passed it back to me.Leaning back, I eyed the shot again, then addressed the table. I had tojack my stick in order to hold the cue ball enough to keep from scratchingin the corner.
I stepped back, eyed the shot again, then decided to go for it.Gadwell grinned. He knew that my chances were slim. Breathing
in deep, I strolled around the table and looked carefully at the shot. Then, crossing to the other end, I elevated my stick and eyed the shot again. Finally, when I had all my attention on the shot I kept my right shoulderstraight, stroked the cue and brought it down smoothly. At just the rightmoment my left wrist turned and drove the stick deep into the cue ball.Obeying my command, the cue ball zoomed out toward the three and metit perfectly. Pulling off the object ball, it drifted to the corner where it caughtthe upper rail then the lower rail and flipped back toward me. Spinningbeautifully around the table it finally coasted to within three feet of the five. The shot had been executed perfectly.
The crowd exploded. The noise level increased dramatically asmost of them stood up and cheered. Shrill whistles and loud gargled hootsand howls followed.
Six games to two.Jimmy, the Stick, Gadwell stood motionless, as though he was
catatonic. Then, shaking his head as if shooing away a fly, he floated tothe bar and sipped on his coffee and said nothing.

Mosconi Cup Gets Four Hour ESPN SlotFrom: Luke Riches
Matchroom Sport are proud to announce that for the first time, the MosconiCup will be broadcast on ESPN in the United States.Despite the continued success of the Americans in pools premier marqueeevent, no US broadcaster has yet shown what is already a highly popularproduction both in Europe and the Far East. The Mosconi Cup is the annual Ryder Cup-style challenge match betweentwo six man teams taken from the very best pool players on both sides ofthe Atlantic.Following last years rout by the Americans, the European side isdetermined to win the Mosconi Cup for the first time since 1995 when theevent commences on December 19th at Londons historic York Hall venue.ESPN will be airing highlights of the tournament as four one hourprogrammes to run consecutively on their ESPN2 channel on SundayDecember 29th. The first programme breaks off at 2:00pm EST, the secondat 3:00pm EST, the third at 4:00pm EST and the final cataclysmic hourgets underway at 5:00 PM EST.Commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn, This is great newsfor American pool fans who will at last get the opportunity to sample theunique atmosphere of the sports greatest event. The USA v Europe natureof the tournament will hopefully attract big numbers of non-pool playingviewers as it has done in Europe over the past few years. Hopefully thiswill be the start of a beautiful relationship that will see the Mosconi Cuptaking place in the United States and being broadcast live from coast-to-coast.Doug White, ESPNs Director of Billiards Programming and Acquisitionsfor ESPN said ESPN is extremely excited about presenting the MosconiCup to the American audience. We feel that the Mosconi Cup is one of the most prestigious and competitivebilliards events in the world. The four consecutive hours on ESPN2illustrates that ESPN is committed to bringing the very best in billiardsprogramming to its viewers.

Mcgills, the cue ball is referred to as the stone. Techniques like this are known as romancing thestone. Have fun.The Three Motivations: Learning, Practicing, andPlaying. One of the largest reasons I have thestroke that I do is found in the title of this article. I have three distinct motivations for being at apool table. Notice that I didnt say, threemotivations for playing I said I have threemotivations for being at the table.Motivation #1: LEARNING- when I arrive at thetable specifically to learn, I come to the table andlearn. Nothing takes me from that purpose. Nothing. Not whos watching, not gambling, nothing takes me from what has motivated metoward the table at that time. Whether Im aloneor playing someone, I continue along that path. Once that I know that Im out, I do one oftwo things. I find out what the balls will do if I justhitem, or I find out what its possible for me tomakeem do. The rest is to watch every shot. Everything that happens at the table can bereproduced. And everything that happens will beof future use to you. even jumping the cue balloff of the table and on to the floor will be of use toyou. A miscue will be of use to you. So if youre missing shots and looking away, turn around andwatch. See what happens and think about a wayto use the very thing you saw in an 8-ball game, then a 9-ball game, and then a 1- pocket game. Watch the worst players in the room and seewhat the balls do. Log all of it and recreate whatyou can. If youre doing this and are tempted towatch the best players you will defeat the wholepurpose. Find the worst players and sit to watch. You will come away with a world of newpossibilities. The least creative player is theplayer most fearful of failure.Motivation #2: PRACTICING- when I went towork I had a ratio that would be impossible foryou to live up to. For every hour that I was playingfor money, I would have in 100 hours of work. That means that I had to put in 2,000 hours beforeI went to a match. (planning for no more than 20hours of work) I played 90 hours every week. 12 hours per weekday and 15 hours Saturdayand Sunday. If you work another job or you makeyour living at pool- get a ratio for yourself. Onceyou have it keep it, its just one more extensionof management skills. I choose a thing topractice EVERYTIME IM AT A POOL TABLE. On a day that I chose to work on force draw- Ishot force draw every single time that it waspossible. Not every time that it left me a shot, not every time that I would win the rack with it, Ishot what I had decided to practice. Every timethat it was possible to leave myself a force drawshot I played that position. Have a purpose andhave intent. My students often get to play withme and they can all tell within an hour or so whatIm working on that particular day. Sometimes Iplay shooting everything with high english, othertimes I only use banks and kicks the entire day. Most of the time I play through without ever playingposition. All of this is practicing. When practiceis the motivation-I practice. The 3rd. Motivation: PLAYING: and thatmeans wanting to win. Please refer to themanagement article in ON THE BREAK Octoberissue. If youre an instructor and play pool withyour students I suggest that you blend all threeof the motivations every time youre on the tablewith them. You will come away with a strongerarsenal and they will see exponentially, morepossibilities. The language that I use is referred to in nearlyevery email that I get. A lot of people seem toenjoy it and see the humor around it. So Ill getback to puttin some in each article like I said Iwould. You got romancing the stone, which isone of my favorites. Sometimes you can get acustomer to go to others and borrow moremoney to play further. They even go to the ATM. You get to choose the time, just make sure itsthe perfect time and yell out, DEAD MANWALKING. If you inflect it rightyoull never hear more laughter in a poolroom.Thank you for following my articles. Do the work.McGill---The Pool Whisperer

AThe subject of do it yourself tablerecovering comes up around here quiteoften. It usually makes me cringebecause there are so many things to
take into account. There are different types of tablesand different types of players. For this writing I amassuming that you are someone who actually cares agreat deal about how your table plays. I cant reallygive you a How To either due to space restraints, butI can give you a run down that may help those whoalready have a way with this type of work. It is a littlelike getting a grandmothers recipe; a pinch of this, adash of that. You really have to see and do to get goodat it.Recovering a pool table is not like recovering a chair.Dont think of your table as a piece of furniture. Howyour table is put together and maintained is like tuninga fine instrument. The better that the cloth is installed, the truer your ball will role and bounce. Sloppy clothmakes for sloppy english. At the BCA trade show Iwas witness to a trend in cloth from California; faux furrails! I was told it was all the rage. Maybe they usetheir tables for something that doesnt include the kindof ball control most pool shooters want.First - bed covering. Clean off slate well, make surethere is no glue or any other substance on playingsurface. Cloth needs to be tight on the bed so thatatmospheric conditions and wear dont contribute toslack. On a good three piece table with wood backingyou staple, pull, and staple the other side keeping thetightness as even as possible (already you can seehow experience comes in to play). On a single pieceslate I use a very good contact adhesive. I glue thesides of the slate only. Then, I use a short 3" or soroller to apply the glue to the edge of the cloth. I stickthe cloth to one side, pull, and stick to the other. Onboth applications you need to get the cloth squarewith the table and stretch very tightly and consistently. At the pockets, you notch the cloth, glue in place or

I am a collegestudent on a very limited budget and was wondering ifyou could help me out with a few tips on recovering atable. We have a 3 piece .75 inch 8 x 4 table and justneed to cover the flat table and not the rails. I saw inOn The Break that you said you covered this topicbut I could not find it online. So if you could provide alink to it or just answer a few questions I would be verygrateful.1. Is the 3M spray adhesive a good adhesive to use?2. I read where you do not want to glue the felt to theslate. Does this mean that I am only supposed to gluethe felt to the underside of the slate and stretch it overthe rest of the table, or am I supposed to spray someadhesive down first?3. Any stretching techniques or tips would beappreciated. If you can answer any of these questionsI would really appreciate it.

matches intense from the get go. The biggestchallenge was the noise from college football thatroared through the bar and dining areas.
However, the players did not let this affect theirgame and showed great sportsmanship whiledealing with the noise levels.Tournament directors Sue Carroll and TiffanyTaylor, saw to it that smooth matches, efficienttiming and good attitudes let the first day glide byand finish early, before Jillians night crownstumbled in.The second day began at noon as well, on thedownstairs seven tables. With the windowscovered, brighter lights and all football crowdsupstairs, it created just the environment theplayers needed. With this, some of the best poolever seen at Jillians was about to begin. Duringthe next few hours, everybody watched in aweas Rafael Martinez skated through the A-side.Stan Tourangeau had plowed his way throughthe B-side, now meeting with Jerry Johnson. Allfinal matches were a race to seven and Jerryhung in there, playing his best, until the very lastgame. The match ended with a 6-7 score andJerry gracefully took 3rd.As Stan and Rafael began the final match, everyone stared in amazement and held theirbreath wondering what was to come. The firstset reached 6-6 and Stan did it again, taking thelast game and winning the set. A second set wasin order. This last match was nothing to takelightly. Each shot was carefully thought out and
Jillians (continued from the front page)precisely hit. At first the score was 5-5 when Iwas reminded how nice and smooth the gameshad gone and how grateful I was to be a part ofit. I was quickly reminded of this when the biggestmoth I have ever seen began to fly by the lightsof the table in front of me. This moth was so big;it probably would have caused interference if itwent to the lights and table Stan and Rafael wereon. With its fury and speed it hit the lights of allthe other six tables before flopping on the floorby Stans feet. My heart began to beat again, thinking that the moth was down for good, andthe games would go on. Rafael jumped ahead, making the match 6-5. As he began to run thelast game, the moth flew up. All I could think washow wonderful this had all been, and now asupersizedmoth wasgoing toruin it. If wegot up to killit, it wouldbe just asdisturbingas them o t hhitting thetable. Mymouth waswide and my heart pounding, but there was noneed. Rafael didnt even notice the moth as heran the last balls for the winning game. Rafaelproudly took 1st and Stan graciously accepted2nd.With such a good turn out and requests for moretournaments, Jillians will be planning anotherevent for this spring. Wed like to thank everyonewho played, all of the spectators for coming towatch and everyone else who supported us inplanning this event. We couldnt have asked fora better group and hope that all of our events willonly get better with experience.1st $1200 Rafael Martinez2nd $640 Stan Tourangeau3rd $350 Jerry Johnson4th $250 Raul Abenojar5/6 $150 Mike Patterson, David Tice7/8 $100 Dan Louie, Chad Alderidge9/12 $50 Sandy Sullivan, James Davee,

staple to wood.Rails are where we are going to have the most difficulty. On tables with feather stripped rails you are going toattach the cloth on the visible side with feather stripping, draping it over and tapping it in place with a rubbermallet. Then, you will stretch it over starting at oneend, stretch the cloth smoothly over the pocket area(where the ball will not be in play) and staple. Continueto staple along the bottom of the rail, pulling to snugbut not so that you miss-shape the rubber. Again tuck
and smooth the cloth at the final end and staple. Otherrail styles will incorporate either glue and/or staples. Iam not able to detail every type, but look at what isalready there and use it for a visual aid. DO NOT everglue directly to the rubber. Do not use backed cloth onthe rails, even with the backing pulled off. The glueresidue will ruin the rubber.I hope this helps somewhat and if nothing else, helpsyou understand why a good service tech is worth everydime he gets.

Sunset Family Billiards has been delayed in their opening. The newdate for opening the room has been pushed back to early December. Whatshouldve been grandfathered in with the existing plumbing was tossedout. Weve had to bring in a new, and larger water main to the space. Thusmeaning changes to the permits that we had all ready, both factors needingmore money, and time. Well it has been fun the last few weeks to say theleast. In the end it will be worth it though. Overall the room is shaping upnicely, and we look forward to having a big Grand Opening Celebrationafter getting open. A large scale 9 - Ball tournament is being penciled in forsometime in the spring depending on what is happening around theNorthwest. We look forward to helping promote our sport along with theexisting rooms throughout the state. Drop by when we open, and let usknow what you think of the room. Any questions can be directed to thestaff at 425-255-RACK. Thank you again, and we look forward to seeingyou.Regards, Sunset Family Billiards

Cotati, CABuffalo Billiards was the gracioushost of the Pechauer Cues 9-ballWest Coast Tour on November16th and 17th. Nearly 60 playersfrom around the region showedbright and early Saturday morningready to compete. Matches ranwithout a hitch and the top 16positioned themselves for aSunday showdown. TopCalifornian players Dave Boundsand Gerardo Jamito battled for thehot seat, while Jesse Allred and Billy Palmer vied to get back to the finalsafter losses to Jamito and Bounds respectively. Jamito took the hot seat, sending Bounds back to face Palmer, who had gained quite a bit of
Palmer Does It Again
momentum coming through the 1-loss side. Bounds was unable toovercome Palmer this time, and Jamito would have less luck against himin the finals. In a one race to 13 format for the finals, Gerardo Jamito hadsimply sat waiting too long. He was unable to catch a gear and Palmerwalked through the final set with a score of 13-3.We would like to take this opportunity to thank the players for their continuedgood attitudes and support. Our continued thanks goes out to room ownerslike Lee Simon who are willing to promote their sport and ultimately theirbusiness by participating in the tour. Please patronize our sponsorswhenever possible, they are: Pechauer Custom Cues, Creative Inventions,Beads and Billiards, The Gripper Cue Caddy, Billiards Press, The ScottiScuffer, The Monk Billiard Academy, and Sir Joseph Cue Gloves. This tourwould not be possible without their valuable support. The next stop isscheduled for January 18-19 at the Cue Ball in Salem, Oregon.
