Western BCA Adds New Events From: The WBPPA Board The 2004 9 th Annual Regional 8-Ball Tournament at Chinook Winds will bring some new and positive changes for the members of the WBPPA. The first being, that one day has been added to this tournament and it will start on Tuesday, March 2 nd , 2004. This was done to accommodate the tournament finish and not shortening races or cutting events. Mark your calendars. In fact, there will be more events added. The very large Open is split into an Open A and Open B Division. The Open A will be the entrants who have been money winners this past year. The Open B Division will be the others who have entered in the past. There will also be a Seniors Division for both men and women. The men must be at least 55 years old by the first entry deadline and the women 50 years old. No master players are allowed to enter the Seniors. The board hopes these changes will be productive and more interesting for all. See everyone there. Mr. Harvey was extremely impressed by the attitude and professionalism of all of the players. The tournament went off with out any problems. Bert Harvey did institute a rule that kept the players on time. For every 10 minutes you were late for a match you lost one game. This rule only got used during the first matches and was not needed again. There was also no smoking permitted during the entire tournament. The first day went smoothly with the matches starting at 9a.m. and finishing by 4 p.m. leaving the top 12 finishers to play the next day for all the cash. When I first came across “The 8-BallBible” it made me curious about thecorrelation. At first I thought it wouldn’tlive up to its name – was I ever wrong! There are diagrams that are illustratedon how, why, where, from, to etc. Thecomplexities that can baffle anyplayer are explained with amazingsimplicity, with rules, how to practiceand how to play. You’ll find a newway of thinking about the game of8-Ball and how to play to win. Anew look at preparing for yourgame and why you shouldn’tbeat yourself up. “The 8-BallBible” offers information onsafeties, your starting shot, as

well as mental imagery, stroking, thinking the wrong way and the obstacles that

can stop your runs.If you are just starting to play 8-Ball or a seasoned league veteran, thisbook has something to offer. For your pool library. Others will notice theimprovement in your game and ask how you did it.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - Nov 29-30, 2004We had 98 players competing for the $2,000 first prize. The two day eventhad many great matches. On Sunday the final 24 players had manymatches that went hill - hill. Seventeen of the twenty-four players wereaverages over 100. This gave the audience some of the best pool theyhave ever seen. The finals was a slow thriller. Jeff Gregory, who had wonthis tournament last November, was in the hot seat waiting for Amar Kang.Amar, who had also won this tournament 3 year ago, had worked his wayfrom the one loss side. In the finals, this was a true double elimination andAmar had to beat Jeff 2 sets of eight. Amar (162 average) spotted Jeff(110average) two games. Jeff immediately jumped out to a 4 game lead. WhenJeff was winning 7-2, Amar made his move. Amar worked hard during thenext 5 games and took it to hill - hill. In this final game, Amar was runningballs when he scratched and gave Jeff cue ball in hand. Jeff proceeded torun the remaining balls to win the match and the $2,000.

From: Rose & Ford, League DirectorsShotze’s in Everett hosted its second season of a new In-House 9-BallLeague. Again, as the first season did, the second was a huge success. The league at this time is being played with 3-person teams, 10 teams, onfive 9-foot tables. Our goal is to build this league into 4-person teams butstay with a (10) team max. What makes this league such a success isthat every penny the players paid in is paid back out. There is a $20 leaguefee per player and then a $10 weekly fee for each week. League is onMonday nights and runs for (14) weeks with free practice from 6-7pm, andstarting time at 7pm. Each player plays (9) games weekly (will be (12)games with 4-person teams). Every player earns $1 back for every gamewon during the regular season and the (5) top individuals with percentagesreceive cash prizes. Also Shotze’s starts the season off with a 9-ball breakpot of $100 and players have the option to buy tickets at $2 each and (3)tickets are drawn weekly to give those lucky players the opportunity tomake a 9-ball break to win the money available. The money is carried overto the following week if not won until the end of the season. After the individualpayouts and top percentages, the remaining money is paid out in a SinglesPlayoff. EVERY member of the league that qualifies receives money forparticipating in the playoffs. Shotze’s also adds $500 to the playoffs. For this season there was a fantastic $6,428 paid out. The breakdownwas as follows: $1,849 individual win, $150 percentage winners, $795 inmystery 9-ball break envelopes and $3,634 paid out in the singles playoffs. If you would like to join this league, please don’t hesitate. Right now thereare approx (6) established teams. We have the room for teams andindividuals can be added to existing teams or put together to form teams. This is a singles league so how a team finishes has no baring on theamount of money each individual can win. The winner of each of the singlesplayoffs has his/her entry paid into the next Shotze’s weekend tournament. This season’s playoff was the weekend of December 20th & 21st.Scott Chandler lost his first match on Saturday to Joe McLaughlin (4-9)and marched all the way through the b-side to take first place. Scott’smatches were Joe (4-9), Brent Langley (7-3), David Shields (7-2), DonRachels (7-2), Dave Eckert (7-3), Alan Buck (7-2), Ray Lundy (7-4), RodgerArent (7-5) and defeating Jeff Jimenez in the finals (11-7). Some amazingpool was played by Scott to win this tournament.Jeff Jimenez made a bid to become the champion of this season’s leaguebut unfortunately came up short. His matches were Ken Wilson (9-6),Arnold R. (9-1), Ray Lundy (9-1), Alan Buck (9-6), and then winning thepoint match against Rodger Arent (9-2). Scott came into the finals onlyhaving to defeat Jeff to win it all and he did just that. Scott took an early leadand never looked back. Jeff made valiant efforts to catch up with Scott but

couldn’t quite get the edge that was needed to put a couple of gamestogether. Again the final score was Scott (11) and Jeff (7). Congratulations,Scott.When I mentioned earlier that every member of the league that participatedin the playoffs made money, I wasn’t kidding. (27) players started the playoffsand all (27) were paid money. Below is how each member ended: (#1 =playoff - #2 = individual wins - #3 = 9-ball break mystery envelopes & #4 =top individual percentage winners)1st Scott Chandler $550 + $71 + $202nd Jeff Jimenez $350 + $91 + $40 + #1 $503rd Rodger Arent $250 + $67 + $254th Ray Lundy $200 + $70 + $505/6 Alan Buck $150 + $65 + n/a

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.I hope Santa brought all of the pool accessories you wanted. This monthsArtistic shot is from the Follow Discipline and has a Degree o Difficulty,(DOD) of 7. This shot has also appeared on ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic. To set this shot up place F ball centered between the pocket points.

Next place E ball one half of a ball to the left of pocket E and one half of aninch out from cushion # 3, the long rail. The cue ball is in hand anywherebehind the X line. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to Eball, carom to cushion # 3, then rebound and curve back to F ball. Youmake both object balls as pocket letter designated. A scratch is allowedand you may contact an extra cushion by F ball. Here are a few helpfulhints on how to execute this shot. I place my cue ball centered from pocketA to E ball, not as diagrammed. Keep your cue level to the plane of thetable. You don’t need as much high, (follow) on the cue ball as you thinkyou do. Stroke at a moderate speed and not with a lot of power. Based ona 13 mm tip, I use about two-thirds of a tip of left English. Don’t forget tofollow through. Have fun with this one. Next months Artistic shot will befrom the bank/kick Discipline and have a, DOD of 7.

A Basic Aiming SystemBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy

Bob Jewett

Email Questions to:[email protected]@[email protected]

Sometimes I think beginners believe too muchin aiming systems. They think that if they justfind the right way to look at the cue ball, objectball and pocket, they will never miss again.Unfortunately, there is no such system. Aim

varies with balls cloth, stick, speed, spin, humidity, and where yourhead is, literally andfiguratively. All systems,or at least the ones Iknow about, ignore someor most of those factors. The only way to learnhow to aim is to play anddevelop a feel for angles, but that’s not to say thatall systems areworthless.A system can provide afirst estimate of the lineof a shot that you have

no feel for, which will frequently be the case ifyou are just beginning to play seriously. If youpractice with one, it can give you confidence intimes of stress. A system will usually make youlook at the shot, and that alone will improve yourplay if you’ve gotten into really lazy habits. Finally,a system will organize angles into a structurethat may be easier to understand than if everyshot is separate and unconnected to shots atslightly different angles.

The fractional ball aimingsystem has been with us forperhaps 200 years — itappears in a book by EdwinKentfield that was publishedin 1839. The basic idea issimple: any cut angle isdescribed by “how much” ofthe object ball the cue ballhits. If the cue ball is directedstraight at the object ball, itis said to hit the object ball“full.” If the center of the cueball is sent towards the exactedge of the object ball, it issaid to hit “half” of the objectball. If the cue ball barelygrazes the edge of the object ball, for a cut ofnearly 90 degrees, it is a “very thin” hit.Various thicknesses of hit are illustrated in thetop diagram. Shown is how much the cue balloverlaps the object ball from the tip’s-eye-view.Of course the diagram is a simplification, sincethe balls are drawn as equal-sized two-dimensional disks, and real balls are threedimensional. The cue ball will always appearlarger than the object ball at its starting point andeven at the time of contact because it will benearer to you.Besides full ball and half ball are 1/4th or “quarter”ball and 3/4ths full. To aim for a half ball hit, youactually have a visible target: the edge of the

object ball. Your stick should be aimed directlythrough the center of the cue ball at the edge ofthe object ball. For 3/4 full, you sort of have atarget if your stick is pointed half way from thecenter of the object ball to the edge. For a 1/4full shot, your stick must be aimed as muchoutside the edge of the ball as the 3/4 shot wasaimed inside the ball.In the lower diagram is view from above of a half-ball hit to make things a little clearer. Note thatthe edge of the cue ball is going towards thecenter of the object ball, just as it’s center is goingtowards the edge of the object ball. Also drawnis a line half way between the two “centerlines”

MGM Grand, Las VegasDay Four - 21st DecemberJEREMY JONES sank the winning9-ball as Team USA regained theMosconi Cup in front of a capacitycrowd at the MGM Grand, Las

Vegas.Jones sent the home fans in to astate of ecstasy as Team Europe’sbrave challenge was ended with an11-9 scoreline.Marcus Chamat was quickly 2-0down after a break and run and thenclearance with a clever 2-ball bankby Jones, but the Swede foughtback with a run out of his own.Chamat missed a simple 5-ball inthe fourth to give Jones clear waterand a run-out took him to the hill.A dry break by Chamat on rack sixlooked costly but he didn’t waste hisopportunity when allowed back inand closed the gap to 4-2.An error by Jones when he missedthe 2-ball gave Chamat a lifeline, butit was all over on the next whenChamat left a tough 1-ball on andJones pounced to clear and ensurethe cup would return to the handsof Team USA.Thorsten Hohmann 3 - 5 RodneyMorrisAfter yesterday’s heroics, thingsstarted badly for Team USA asRodney Morris halved Team USA’sdeficit as he edged out worldchampion Thorsten Hohmann in theopening match of Day Four.Morris took advantage of a ball inhand to run out the first against thebreak but Hohmann executed aclever clearance to level in the next. The German got in to stroke to clearfrom the break and then Morrisfollowed suit as the match reached2-2.After an exchange of snookers inrack five Morris was handed achance which he took to take thelead for the first time but Hohmanndragged the match back in to thebalance as he negotiated a trickyrun-out.However, Morris, to the delight of thehome crowd, capitalised on ascratch after a nasty kick in theseventh and then a lack of positionon the six in the eighth rack to takethe match and make the overallscores 8-7 to Europe.Steve Davis 2 - 5 Johnny ArcherMosconi veteran Johnny Archer putin another stellar performance ashe cruised past Steve Davis to tie

the tournament up at eight pointsapiece.A disastrous break shot saw the cueball fly into the top right pocket andwith ball in hand Archer took the rackagainst the break.

Davis took the next after Archerfailed to execute a tough 2 / 7combination leaving an open tablefor the European.Archer ran out of position and lefthimself an awkward shot on the 8ball down the rail. He missed anDavis wrapped up the 8 and 9 to gointo the lead at 2 - 1.That was to be Davis’ final successof the game.Davis’ lack of knowledge told in thefourth as he put Archer back in afterthe American pushed out. Archerbanked the 1 ball in and proceededto clear to tie it up.A scratch by Davis in the next giftedthe rack to Archer.Davis failed to make a ball on thebreak and Archer executed a trickyclearance to put Team USA on levelterms.Nick van den Berg 4 - 5 EarlStricklandTeam USA continued their superbcomeback as Earl Strickland beatHolland’s Nick van den Berg in a 5-4 thriller that saw the Americansregain the lead at 9-8. They are nowtwo points away from regaining thetrophy they last held in 2001.Strickland recovered from his 5-0drubbing yesterday as he performedwell in the pressure cookeratmosphere at the MGM Grand. From the opening break Stricklandhad no real shot on the 2-ball andleft van den Berg in snookersituation from which the Dutchmanscratched. With ball in handStrickland cleared to take the earlylead.A golden break from van den Berglevelled it at 1-1 before a run outfrom the break restored the USAlead.Strickland missed a long cut at the2-ball to leave van den Berg achance to clear which he took.Strickland ran out in game five andwon the next to go to 4-2 after theEuropean missed a difficult 1/8combination and left the table open.Strickland had a chance to wrap itup in the next but ran slightly out ofposition on the brown 7 and missed

Craig W Rittel

Hello, this month let letstake a look at a subject that manytimes gives our sport a black eyein the eyes of the general public, and also in the eyes of new leagueplayers and that is a lack ofEtiquette while participating inpocket billiards. Our sport andespecially league play should beserious, but also something that isenjoyed beyond just winningmatches and trophies. I truly thinkthe average league player uses theirtime during league play as a formof stress relief, and relaxation aftera hard days work. Keeping this inmind, these same people do notwant to deal with un-conscience orconscience negative behavior, poorsportsmanship, or bad habits thateffect fair play.

Lets start with the obvious, what is difficult about being

courteous to your opponent andyour opponent’s team. Whenanother team comes to localestablishment for league play, theyshould be treated as guests. Thissimply means treat others, as youwant to be treated. Make the otherteam feel at home, help keep thenoise down during play, help stopother patrons not involved in leagueplay from becoming a problem andfrom getting in the way. Be fair whilewinning a match is very important, winning by intimidation from patronseither observing or playing duringleague play is un-acceptable andshould not be tolerated by leagueoperators or by team captains. Agood example of this occurredrecently during league play here inWashington State. A player from anopposing team was asked not tosmoke a cigar because it wasmaking another player sick. Theplayers reaction to this was to notonly continue to smoke his cigar, but to act as if it was a joke and toantagonize the situation further byintentionally blowing smoke in thedirection of the other player. Whatdid he have gain by this behavior?Additionally how was this situationperceived by others on bothteams? Last how should conductunbecoming be treated by and why

are no actions taken by leagueoperators against individuals andteams who behave in this manneron a frequent basis.

Below are listed some of themore common actions that showpoor etiquette during play.

1. Spitting in the chalk2. Placing the chalk upside

down on the table orcreating a mess on the tableby other means.

3. Removing the chalk formyour cue tip on the floor orfurniture at your localestablishment.

4. Standing at the Table andchalking your cue when it isyour opponents shot.

5. Walking away from thetable with house chalkwhen your time at the tableis over.

6. Placing items on the tablesuch as drinks, food, oryour backside.

7. Standing near the tablewhen it is no longer yourshot or intentionallystanding and makingmovements in youropponent’s line of aim.

8. Consciously trying todistract your opponent, bynoise, by talking to them, orby other means designed tobreak their concentrationduring play.

9. Intentionally being late foryour match

10. Sand bagging11. Intentionally causing

damage to houseequipment, pool tables, racks, cue sticks and otheritems provided by theestablishment owner.

12. Any form of unsportingbehavior, such as,slamming the rack down onthe table, throwing things, foul language due to a missor a loss, or intentionallyantagonizing other playerseither through intimidationor unprofessional behavior.

Inclosing, I think most players wantan environment where they feelcomfortable and where they canenjoy this sport. I also think thatleague operators should take acloser look at policing league play.If these behaviors are truly madeunacceptable and actions are takento deter unprofessional behaviorthings can change. All players haveto do to make this happen is bandtogether and make you voicesheard, there is definitely strength innumbers and numbers are on yourside. Please have a wonderful Christmasand an even better NewYear!!!!!!!!!!!! players voted on many things. But, with a little innovation and support, theplayers of the WSPL BIG DOG have helped us develop a new playingformat that has become very popular! The BIG DOG Divisions in Federal Way and Gig Harbor gives us anopportunity to have some fast paced fun. With a 3-5 format (3 players perteam, per night), and a maximum of 5 players on your team roster, we areable to start at 6:30PM, and finish by 8:30PM. Most Big Dog players areable to make it home early therefore making it home in time to keep our‘better halves’ happy!! Although the WSPL requires that you be a member of a team in anestablished division. We only require that each player plays (4) regularmatches on any one team during each session. The players who at present are playing in the Big Dog Division, will actuallybecome the teachers and instructors of the new players coming into thenew Big Dog Divisions. Which will further develop the WSPL, and soon tocome SOLA. So, if you really want to have some fun, and not stay out all night! Pleasecontact us at 253-606-POOL, and let us answer your questions! By the time you read this, the ChristmasSeason is over. I hope you enjoyed theholidays, I know that I will. Like I mentioned inmy last article, the last minute rush to get thetable for the kids is no longer the big item. The last two tables I sold were for the monthof January. Pool is a year round thing andmost people own up to the fact that the tableis really for the adults.I am putting a picture of the 1906 table thatwe redesigned. Come to find out that it was

in Erickson’s Bar in downtown Portland. Erickson’s had the longest bar inthe world. It went all the way from Third Street to Forth Street on WestBurnside. The bar was one of the oldest in Portland and was owned at onetime by Henry Weinhart. There were six Brunswick “Brilliant Novelty” tables. Most of which I have restored. I still have one that spent 30 years in achicken coop. Henry sold the “Novelties” and the next owner put in cheapermodels. The picture shows the 1906-1920 tables that were there. In 1955Dad and I moved 10 of the tables from the Rialto to the Alaska which wasone half of the old Erickson’s. It was a big place and I can only imaginewhat Erickson’s must have been.We are still restoring some classic tables from the early 1900’s. Wefinished the Mission style table for McMenamin’s Rock Creek Tavern. Theoriginal burned to the ground twice. I plan to do a story on it in one of thenext editions. The table originally came from the East Side Billiards. It wasmade by Brunswick early in the century; however, it had five coats of paintand we were unable to find the patent dates. It took forever to get throughall the paint that the people at Lewis & Clark College applied, but Mike liked

the style and the frame turned out beautiful. The slate for this table is inGrants Pass on another table so we used the new over size slate and builta new set of quarter sawn Oak rails. It plays like God intended a pool tableto play, Gorina supplied the English Green Tournament 2000 Cloth and Ifind that it goes on much better and plays better than Simonis. You can get9 rails with an easy stroke. The solid rail and K55 profile cushion gives anexcellent bounce, and the accuracy to permit the 9 rail shot. If you are inPortland you must make the trip to see the Rock Creek Tavern and play onthe table. The place is just like it was before the fire only much nicer. Thereare so many beautiful items that your head just continues to spin left andright and up and down. Mike told me that it cost $1,500,000 to rebuild andoutfit. The Rock Creek Tavern is on 10000 Old Cornelius Pass Road andwell worth the trip. For directions call 503-645-3822.Still working on the 1905 Econo, the owner decided to do some of theproject so we have to wait for him to show, so we went to the next tablewhich is from the 1909 to 1912; however, we cannot find a name to go withit. I have tried everyone I know, even the great guru, Joe Newell. He hasevery catalog that Brunswick ever published but no picture of this one. It isa 5 x 10 Billiard and Pool with interchangeable rails with the Eureka PatentFastener. The table is very unusual and when I have it finished I will send apicture in to “The Break”. The owner pulled all the veneer but two hiddenpieces, so I know it is another quarter sawn Oak table. To make thingsworse, the owner took a belt sander to the substructure and gouged thesurface so badly it has taken a week to fill the surfaces to the level of thehighest point. There are many curves to bend around and 86 surfaces toveneer. It’s one of those jobs when you have to say I think it’s going to costso much but I won’t know until it’s done. In my mind’s eye I know exactlywhat it should look like but it’s a real task to make it happen.See you all in the next exciting chapter of “The Break”.

SPOKANE, WAOn December 6th and 7th McQ’s Billiards hosted a class “D” 9-balltournament. Many of the 38 players that entered the event really felt likethey had a good chance to win. And that is exactly what I am striving for.I want to direct tournaments for all levels of play and I want the players inthose events to really feel that they have a good chance to win. Mysystem is not in any way perfect, but at least I give opportunities fromthe top to the bottom. Thank you very much to the players that playedand I’ll see you at the next event.1st $400 Brian Condin side pot $1352nd $280 Chuck Hood3rd $175 Dan (Tic Toc) Evanger4th $125 John Lesonik5th $75 Don White, John Joplin7th $50 John Hoff, Chris Bailey9th $25 Mark Nevills, Don Totten, Rick Adams, Bob White

that went off on Saturday, half areconsidered tournament winners, worldtravelers and major contenders in anytournament they participate in. It is simplyamazing.Stan Tourangeau, the winner of our lasttournament, showed up ready to prove thatthe last win was no fluke. His two Saturdaymatches were Joe McLaughlin (7-1) andDave Jones (7-1). Stan’s Sunday matcheswere against tough Washington players. The first was Robert Colby (8-5), KrisIverson (8-4) and then a major win against

another Canadian, Paul Potier (8-7) for the point match.Paul has participated in a few of Shotze’s tournaments over the last eightyears and has done well. His Saturday matches were Dave Williams (7-1), Zorix (7-3) and Mike Shannon (7-1). Paul also started out Sunday againstsome tough Washington players. They were Tim Tweedell (8-6), Dan Louie(8-4) and then his loss against Stan (7-8). Paul fought his way back to thefinals by defeating Kris Iverson (7-6).Stan took a commanding lead and never looked back. Paul did try to makea match out of it at one time, but Stan wasn’t having anything to do with itand finished the match. The score was Stan (9) and Paul (6).Congratulations Stan. The question is, can he do it again for an unheard ofthree in a row. Hopefully, we will see in March of 2004. Watch for our ad forthe next Spring Classic.Once again, and as always, the players need to take time out to thankDarryl, owner of Shotze’s, for a great place for a tournament, and also forthe extraordinary staff that is always on hand to make the players weekendas easy as possible. Without those two elements, tournaments of thiscaliber for this area wouldn’t be.Final results are as follows:1st $940/$324 Stan Tourangeau2nd $600/$243 Paul Potier3rd $400/$162 Kris Iverson4th $300/$81 Dan Louie5/6 $225 Sam Y, Santos7/8 $175 Alan Ima, Tim Tweedell9-12 $120 Jeff Jimenez, Mike Vidas, Robert Colby, J DThanks to each and everyone of you for participating in this tournamentand hopefully we will see you in March.

2003 Mosconi Cupthe long pot up the table. Van den Berg cleared the remaining three balls totake the rack.Another error from the American, this time a fluffed 2/5 combodown the rail, gave Team Europe a lifeline which van den Berg duly took toput the match at hill-hill.With everything at stake, Strickland cracked homea brilliant break shot to put two balls down and leave a road map to victory.Mika Immonen 2 - 5 Tony RoblesNew York’s Tony Robles finally came good as he stopped in-form EuropeanMika Immonen in his tracks to put Team USA on the hill at this year’sMosconi Cup.The 5 - 2 win for the US puts them within one point of regainingthe trophy they last held in 2001.The Finnish star took the opener as he ran out from the break but a coupleof errors from Immonen in the next two racks gave Robles the opportunityto take the lead at 2 - 1.Robles made a spectacular jump shot to pocket the 4 ball but messed upthe safety on the orange 5 and Immonen was able to dish up for the rack.Immonen scratched on the break in the next and Robles ran out with ball inhand to regain the lead and a further scratch by Immonen followed by afoul on the 7 ball gave Robles the chance to go 4 - 2.To compound the misery Immonen came up dry in his final break andRobles held himself together to run out and take the point.Ralf Souquet 5 - 3 Charlie WilliamsIn a match that seemed to last a lifetime, Ralf Souquet held off CharlieWilliams to keep Euro hopes alive the MGM Grand. The score now standsat 10-9 in favour of the USA with a potential two games left to play. The match was characterised by some excellent safety play from bothplayers but it was Williams who made the critical errors down the homestretch to give the former World Champion the chances he needed to sealthe victory. With the scores tied at three racks each Williams broke but could onlymanage a safety on the 1-ball. It looked good but with the 1-ball hoveringby the bottom right pocket, Souquet managed to jump the blocking ballsand pocket the yellow 1. From there he cleared the table to go to into a 4-3 lead.Souquet broke in the next and cleared until the pink 5 but a long rolldown the table was too loose and the pink failed to drop. With just four balls left it looked a certainty for Williams to level it up but hecommitted a school boy error as he missed a straightforward green 6.The pro America crowd gasped in disbelief and it was left to Souquet toclear three balls to register Team Europe’s first win of the final day.

Americans Delighted

With Success

TEAM USA were understandably delighted to haveregained the Mosconi Cup, particularly with theevent being played on their home soil for the firsttime in its ten-year history. Led by captain NickVarner, the Americans fought back from an 8-6deficit after Day Three to take the honours with an11-9 win. Here are the thoughts of the men thatmatter from Team USA:Varner“These guys have incredible heart. Even after thecatastrophic events of yesterday, we easilythought we could win this 11–9 if things went ourway. What we were concerned about this morningwas that we were 8–6 down.We discussed what the line up would be and weall agreed very quickly but I was surprised by theirrunning order. I thought it opened the door up forus just a little because I wouldn’t have gone withthat line up. I would have started with Mika andSouquet. I thought Tony Robles had a real, toughweek but his was the match of the day for me. Hewas asked and boy did he deliver! I would alsolike to say thank you to Kim Davenport who waswith us the whole time and played a big part inhelping get the team regrouped after day three.Being captain has been great but it’s been thehardest thing I’ve had to do, watch but not play.”Jones“Three years ago I had the chance to pot thewinning 9-ball, ironically against Marcus Chamatso to have the opportunity again was a realblessing. Winning the US Open and now this putsme up there with players like Earl and Johnny;guys who have done things in this game that mostother players haven’t. I want to take my hat off tothe two debutantes who both won huge matcheson our way to the win.”Robles“I play Mika a lot in New York and when his namecame up I knew I had a chance because I knowhis game well. I was determined to win whoever itwas. Today was the proudest day of my career.I’ve watched all these guys growing up and it was

The storycontinues . . .EVER READY, SUDDENLY ATBOILING POINT, SNAPPED HISCUE down on the table and broke itoff just above center into pieces. Fora moment I thought I had seen areincarnation of Danny the Brat.Reyes snorted a few expletives thenwent to his chair, uncased a newupper shaft for his cue, assembledit and sat down as if nothing at allhad happened.“What is it about you, Keating?” Joesnarled, “guys act like the fullmoon’s out when they’re playin’you.” He muttered, “serves the littlewimp right.”“Time out!” Reyes screechedsuddenly. Then he walked hurriedlytoward the restrooms.“What the – “ Joe exclaimed.“Nothing to be alarmed about, Joe,”I said, “he’s taking his break time.”Standing, I reached my cue out toJoe and said, “Be back in a fewminutes. Watch my stick for me.”“No problem Swami,” Joe saidgrabbing the cue and setting itagainst his chair. Spreading hisarms and waving them downward,he said, “mind if I chat with Linda Jowhile I’m guarding the holy grail?”Grinning, I spun around and shotJoe with my thumb and forefinger, then kept walking. Elbowing myway through the shoppers, I nosedthrough the double doors to theconcierge’ desk.Empty. A Mercedes wheeledaround the corner and stoppedunder the breezeway. The dooropened, the valet slipped out. Awhite-haired older looking man

handed the valet a tip and wiggledinto the Benz. The valet crossed over to theconcierge desk, then glanced up.“Boss Rickling around,” I asked.“Boss Rickling? Who’s that?” heasked.“Boss Rickling,” I repeated, theconcierge.“Dunno a Boss Rickling,” He saidpolitely, fiddling with somepaperwork. He looked up, eyed mestrangely and said, “Tandy’s theconcierge, fella, n’ he’s out for a biteto eat.” Eyeing his watch, he said,“Be back in couple minutes.”Something I can help you with?” I chuckled nervously, “You tellingme that you’ve never heard of BossRickling?”“No Sir, never heard of ‘em, Mister.”

Pause. His eyes moved beyond me,“There’s Tandy the concierge now,If n’ ya want to ask’im.”Dressed in a well pressed, spiffyuniform, Tandy was gentle lookingand black, but not Boss Rickling. As Tandy drew closer, the valet eyedhim and said, “Any chance ya knowa Boss Rickling?”“Boss Rickling?” Tandy reflected, stopping short of me. “Sure doknow a Boss Rickling.”I sighed thankfully.“Quite a loss,” he said, gazing offinto street. “Been about a year nowsince he passed on.” He turned hiseyes back toward me and added,“Was the concierge here for a bunchof years. Fine gentleman. Youknow ‘im?” he asked.

The BCtv spot ads will remain. The cable TVschedule, times and other information are available online atwww.billiardclub.net.Presently, BCtv is featuring the 2002 Mosconi Cup through the end of 2003to help promote this year’s Mosconi Cup at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.BILLIARD CLUB network, producer of BCtv, plans to offer other eventinventory for online viewing along with the weekly episodes. The 2003 USOpen 9-Ball Championship event should be available in their completeunedited versions by Christmas. Viewers will all be treated to stockpile ofvideo content from various regional pool tours, including the Viking CueTour, the Falcon Cue Tour and the Joss Northeast Tour. To submit contentfor broadcast on BCtv, call 1-866-774-8770.“Contrary to the Billiard media pundits with the doomsday outlook for pool, this is a very exciting time,” said Rob Sykora, BCn president. “BILLIARDCLUB tv has more weekly broadcast hours than any other poolprogramming in the United States and that includes ESPN. Plus, the numberof weekly viewing households we’re reaching is growing at a rapid pacedue to our consistent and reliable weekly schedule. But, since we’re not inevery cable TV market nationwide just yet, we’ve launched this onlinechannel to provide a more direct and targeted delivery of BCtv to the corebilliard marketplace. The best part for the viewer is that it’s available 24/7and it’s free to everyone who wants to watch as often as they like.”BCn contracted Eonstreams of Knoxville, TN <http://www.eonstreams.com> to develop the media player and administer thebroadcasting of the online video stream. “The interactive video player hasgreat functionality,” said Emma Woods, Project Manager for Eonstreams.“A billiard sports fan can browse the net, read breaking news articles, andeven engage in discussion in a popular online forum, all while watchingBCtv in the upper half of the player.”“Linking to the sponsors and advertisers who support the program was akey ingredient to bringing the project to fruition,” added Sykora. “Theadvertising and promotional opportunities we’ve now created for billiardindustry merchants, product manufacturers and corporate sponsors aremore dynamic than any other billiard media outlet and we’re confident thatour members will show their support to the companies that helped makethis happen.” OTB

“Er . . . Ye . . .es, yes sir.” I stammered. My head turned down, my eyes stared ahole through the concrete. I was speechless. Turning slowly around, I breathed indeeply, then slowly headed to the double doors, confused.“You alright, son?” Tandy called out, raising his voice.“Yeah,” I said weakly, as the double doors closed behind me.A pervasive, permeating chill ran through me. Could it have been my imagination?Charley had said, “I’ll always be with you.” I shook off the implications and shotback into the Galleria. Suddenly a calmness had come over me, and it seemed tobe enough.THE CROWD APPLAUDED LIGHTLY WHEN I CAME BACK into the arena. Igestured to them and went to my chair. Reyes had already returned, and waseyeing his shot.

Joe handed me my cue. “Take an act of God for him to wiggle out of thisone. He chuckled.

Nod.Ever Ready had settled down and regained his composure. His posture

was again confident. Though snookered, he had a different walk and theme in hismanner. In the upper right corner pocket, the seven laid dead in the pocket. For Reyes tomake the shot, he’d have to go three rails, a highly risky and illogical shot. Positioninghimself, he eyed the rail, backed off, and studied the shot some more. Then suddenlysmiled just enough for me to notice.Calmly he reset himself. To everyone’s surprise, he jacked his stick up slightly, stroked his cue several times, and then followed through.I didn’t see the shot until the last moment. Reyes was attempting to drive the cueball into the rail so that it jumped backwards off the rail, went airborne over thecluster, and eventually rolled the seven into the jaws of the upper corner pocket. The cue ball went airborne, cleared three other balls and headed straight down thetable to the seven. Striking the seven solidly into the pocket, it hit the upper rail, loped to the center of the table and stopped. The shot was tantamount to WillieMays famous over the shoulder catch in the Polo Grounds.

The crowd went nuts. The noise was deafening.Ever Ready lit up. He through back his shoulders and looked up to his fans andnodded, but quickly gathered his attention back to the table. Bitten once, he wasreluctant to let it happen again.

“Geez,” Joe said, “is that legal?”Nod. “And a super shot,” I said, “didn’t see it myself till the last moment.”Ever Ready, the endorphins working overtime, ran out the table and took a

six four lead. With the momentum back, he attacked the diamond cluster by uncoiling

his body and powering the cue ball into the next rack. If the fifteen object balls hadbeen filled with dynamite the break would have blown the arena to pieces. The cueball, as if choreographed, jumped up just enough for the table to clear out under it

then drifted to the side rail and rebounded softly to the center of the table. Threeballs tumbled off the table into pockets, two stripes and a solid.

Again the crowd got into the act, responding boisterously, bellowing hoots, howls and whistles.“Get the feelin’ they like this guy, Keating?” Joe quipped.Nod.“Listen Keating, if it comes down to people takin’ sides, n’ it gets physical whenthis is over, hope ya don’t mind if I go with the crowd.”Nod.Ever Ready steadily, methodically ran the table.Seven four. Three more wins and he’d be on the hill.A wide charismatic grin spread wide on his face as he bowed like an actor completinga Broadway play. The crowd clapped heartily.Ever Ready knew how to bring his whole intimidating package to the match.“Force your mind away from the intimidation, Charley Sturgis’ ghost whispered.“Whatever it takes, don’t buy into your opponent’s tactics.”Taking in a deep breath, I slumped down in my chair, eased my head against myshoulder, closed my eyes, opened my mouth, and pretended to snore lightly.Ever Ready turned in my direction and apparently stopped in his tracks when hesaw me.Slowly the crowd noticed. Like a wave moving quietly across the room, they caughton as the laughter started slow and increased. Playing my cards to the hilt, Ibreathed in deep and snorted.“Senor!” he growled, and tapped me on the shoulder.“Uhhh . . . yeah,” I replied, in a slumbering stupor.“We play pool or not?” he reprimanded arrogantly.“Uhhh . . . yeah,” I taunted, “my shot?”“Eeess my shot, Gringo. Eees my shot!”“Oh,” I said, sat up in my chair and stretched my eyes wide.He eyed me angrily then crossed back over to the table.Again, I slumped down in my chair. The crowd laughed. Ever Ready turned, looked at me, then raced over and complainedto the referee.“Keating,” Joe mumbled, “you’re driving him ballistic.”“Elbow me, Joe,” I muttered through my teeth.”“Huh.”“Elbow me, Joe.”He did.Like a student caught sleeping by the teacher, I snapped up and sat alert. Stretchingmy eyes again as though I’d just woken from eight hours of sleep, I looked aroundas though I was lost. The crowd laughed, Ever Ready steamed, and the advantage had been won.

which turns out to give the two points on the ballsthat actually make contact at “CP.” Thisdemonstrates that the stick is almost neverpointed at the spot on the object ball you actuallywant to contact.Geometry tells us the cut angles for each of thesefour cardinal fullnesses of hit. Full ball is prettyobviously a cut of zero degrees. Half ball is 30degrees, which can be shown pretty easily withequilateral triangles, if you retain some of yourhigh school geometry or mechanical drawing. It’s a little harder to work out that 3/4 full is a cutof 14.48 degrees, and 1/4 fullcuts the ball 48.59 degrees. A friend of minememorized the cut angles for thicknesses downto 64ths, so he could tell you that 51/64ths full isa cut of 12 degrees. I think the 1/2 ball angle isplenty for most people, since you have to judgethe angles by eye anyway.Even if you don’t use the idea of fractional ballhits to aim, it is very useful to describe how full ashot is hit. In future columns, I’ll cover someother common aiming systems.

such an honour to be a part of all this. Kim Davenporthad everything to do with our win, he’s played a bigpart as well.”Archer“We’re here to win and this has turned into a big eventand emotions run high. Animosity is created becauseonce this starts, they’re not our friends, because youcan’t beat your friends. We’re all trying to win but whenit’s over we shake hands and become friends again. Itwould have meant just as much for them to have wonso we don’t feel bad about it.Morris“This is like a second chance for me after my breakfrom the game. It’s my greatest feeling and a realkickstart for me personally. I hope us winning this eventwill increase pool’s popularity.”Williams“Even though I didn’t make a point for the team thiswas my favourite Mosconi Cup because of theatmosphere. It was the most exciting with the mostemotions and I’m proud to be on the team.”Strickland“It’s great to win. I told Charlie he’s the first guy not tomake a point on the winning team but it was a teameffort. We know the Europeans have a great team butour guys are good too and we showed what we arecapable of.”
