With everyone's help we think Arkansas Genealogical Society, Inc., already has a good start. Many of our members have sent valuable material, which is already waiting for publication in a future issue this year. If you have information on a Family in Arkansas, or a Family who has lived in Arkansas, that you would like to share with us, we would like to know about it. Some of our members may have additional information on the very family you may be having problems with and a small clue may be just what you need. This is your Quarterly, so let us know what you are working on and share with us.

Many have expressed nice remarks about recent issues and several have requested information about South Arkansas, Randolph Perry, and Yell Counties. If you have material on people in those areas, maybe you can make some one happy.

-3-CHARLES WINGFIELD - 1798-1881

Charles Wingfield was born February 6, 1798 in Warren County, Kentucky. His ancestors came from England originally and settled in Virginia before the Revolutionary War. The Wingfields were also among the first settlers in Arkansas. In 1818 Charles went to Ark­ansas. His wife Miriam was born September 19, 1802 in Dixon Co., Tennessee and came to Arkansas in 1819. Date and place of marriage is unknown.

In October of 1835, Judge A. H. Rutherford appointed Charles Wingfield overseer from Greenville to Washington in Hempstead Co., Arkansas. It is possible he also held other positions in local gov­ernment.

Charles and Miriam Wingfield had ten children: 1. Elijah 2. John 3. Emily 4. Samuel 5. Joseph 6. William Henry Wingfield, born Oct. 12, 1853 7. Jane (possibly Mary Jane) 8. Thompson 9. Marion

10. Adeline Miriam died July 14, 1877. Charles died July 22, 1881 and

both were buried at Antoine, Arkansas. ELIJAH WINGFIELD

Elijah Wingfield, the first child of Charles and Miriam Wing­field, was born November 18, 1820 and married Frances Stell, dau­ghter of Joseph and Isabella Stell on July 21, 1841. Five children were born to Elijah and Frances: (The first three died in their youth) .

1. Joseph, born Nov. 11, 1842, died Sept. 24 1844 2. Charle, born Feb. 25, 1845, died Nov. 4, 1847 3. Hiram T., born Sept. 21, 1847, died 28 Sept. 1862 4. Josephine, born Jan. 2, 1850, married George W.

Reed (born Feb. 3, 1849, son of George Reed Sr., and Mary Reed). Josephine Wingfield Reed and George Reed Jr., were the parents of two sons: 1. John W. Reed, born July 5, 1870. Had a son

named Frank. 2. Charlie Reed, born February 16, 1873.

Charlie Reed married Kate They had a son and a daughter. 1. Winston 2. Clara Reed married Otis Dabb.

Josephine died January 20, 1883 and George died January 2, 1921, both are buried at Delight, Ark.

William Henry Wingfield was born October 12, 1853. He was the only surviving son of Elijah and Frances Wingfield. On August 15, 1872, William Henry Wingfield and Jemian Antony Trout (Daughter of Joseph Q. Trout and Luciinda W. McNeil, were married in Okolona, Arkansas.

William Henry Wingfield served as a Judge and Justice of the Peace in Pike County, Arkansas. He was known to be a very strict & stern man.

Ada Caledonia Winfield, born Jan. 15, 1874 was the f first child, she married John Brock (born Oct. 15, 1874) and had several children: 1. Irma Brock was born July 27. 1894 and died Nov. 5, 1907 2. Eura Brock was born Dec. 18, 1918, died Dec. 14, 1956 3. Aurbey (son) 4. Wingfield John Brock died February 17, 1919. Ada died July 28, 1944.

Fanniewell Eugenia Wingfield, the second child was born Dec. 21, 1876 and married John Booth on Oct. 9, 1898. (John was born Feb. 20. 1878) They were the parents of

'five children: 1. Ibra Booth, born Aug. 26, 1899 married A. O.

Johnson on December 2, 1915 and had one child: 1. Evertt Johnson, born Dec 12, 1916 and died Aug.

27, 1918. 2. Byron Booth was born April 2, 1903 and married Jan.

16, 1926 to Connie May (born July 17, 1909). They had four children: 1. Martha Sue Booth, born Aug. 22, 1927 2. Mary Lou Booth, born Feb. 8, 1930 3. Billy Don Booth, born Sept. 3, 1933 4. Geneva Kathleen Booth, born May 7, 1942

3. Iva May Booth, born June 17, 1906 and was married Nov. 17, 1925 to Curtis Widner (born April 26, 1901) They were the parents of one child: ! ~ , 1. Edwin Burton Widner, bOrn Sept. 15 { 1939

(Curtis Widner died August 9, 1942) 4. Burton Booth was born Sept. 23~ 1908 and married

Mary 0' Senior Nelson on Aug. 0, 1936 5. The last son was born Oct. 14, 1900 and died Oct.

25, 1900 Fanniewell Eugenia Wingfield Booth died Feb. 1956. John Booth died March 31, 1964.

The third child born to William Henry Wingfield and Jemina Antony Trout Wingfield wa.s Robert McGruder Wing­field, born Feb. 1, 1879. Little is known about him because he left home when he was a young man. He had been caught transporting liquor during the prohibition days. Although he called his sister, Minnie Bell, on one occaSion, he never returned home.

4. Joel Dexter Wingfield the fourth child born to William and Jemina Wingfield, was born Jan. 30, 1881 and died on Feb. 26, 1923. The details of his life are covered at the beginning of this biography.

5. Charlie Cook Wingfield was the fifth child. He was born on Dec. 29, 1883 and on Nov. 11, 1911 he married Osa Webb (born Sept. 15, 1894) their children were: 1. Rudolph Wingfield, born July 14, 1912, died Dec. 18, 1918 2. Milloween (dau.) 3. Charline (dau.) Charlie Cook Wingfield and Osa were divorced and he married Julia TheY·l1ad two girls: 1. Amanda Jeanette Wingfield 2. Carolyn Sue. Charlie may be buried at Corrigan, Texas, but the death date is not known.

6. The sixth child was Hollie. Wingfield, born Jan. 13, 1886. She was married to Frank Baird and had three children: 1. Neil 2. Billie 3. Francis Lee

7. Roma Jeanetta Wingfield, born May 5, 1888. was. the seventh child born to William Henry and Jemina Wingfield. She married on Jan 23, 1910 to Ben F. Young and had one child: Marguerite who died as a small child. Ben was a Pharmist, and died in 1934. Roma Jeanetta died May 15, 1962, both are buried at Delight, Arkansas.

8. William Henry Wingfield Jr., the eighth child born to Wm. and Jemina Wingfield, was born May 28, 1891. His first marriage was to Grace Sorrells. They had three children: 1. Doyle Webster Wingfield 2. Raymond Randolph Wingfield 3. Dorothy Dean Wingfield William Henry Wingfield Jr., divorced Grace and married again Oct. 16, 1928 to Eugenia Reed (born Jan. 14, 1905) Five children were born to this marriage: 1. William Henry Wingfield III, born July 25, 1929 2. Carol Nell Wingfield, born Sept. 7, 1930 3 Teddy Reed Wingfield, born April 19, 1932 4. Roma Dell Wingfield, born Jan. 4, 1934 5. Albert Reed Wihgfield, born Aug 18, 1938 1.William Henry Wingfield III married Claudia Nell Little,

they had two children: The first child Pamela Jean mar­ried Roy Alford Grissom Jr May 25, 1972 and had one child: Richard Isaac Grissom. The second child was Clara Senelle.

2.Clara Nell married John Robert Corley. They had two children: Robert David Corley, born Aug. 30, 1952.

Patricia Ann Corley, born Aug. 25, 1953 3.Teddy Reed married Ruby Sue Coffman. They had two

boys: Teddy Reed Wingfield Jr. born April 23, 1958. Mark Keith Wingfield, June 11, 1960.

4.Roma Dell Wingfield married Arthur Monroe Heath Jr., on Feb. 14, 1953. Their children are Lina Susan, born Sept. 29, 1953. Douglas Alan, born Dec. 26, 1954.

9. The ninth child Minnie Dell born Sept. 19, 1893 married Roy Lee Herndon. Roy worked for Southwestern Bell Tele­phone in Tulsa.; Okla., for forty years. Two daughters were born to Minnie Dell and Roy: Lee Dell Myrthine

10. The last child born to William Henry Wingfield and Jemina Anthony Trout was a son: he was born Oct. 14, 1900 and died Oct. 25. 1900. William Henry died June 2, 1927. Jemina died Sept. 4, 1929. Elijah Wingfield died Oct. 20, 1879 followed by Francis on Feb. 14, 1897. They were buried in Antoine, Arkansas, Elijah and Fran­cis had lived at Antoine since their marriage.

JOHN WINGFIELD John Wingfield the second child of Charles and Mariam. He was

born in 1822 and married Elizabeth . They had five children. Thomas the first child was born in 1861. He was followed by Mary, born in 1865. The third child, Joel. born in 1865 and he married Nancy Kelley. They had two children: Nora L., born in 1877 and , Cora C., born in 1880. Robert the fourth child of John and Eliza"­beth, born in 1868. The last child. name unknown was a girl, born 1869.

EMILY WINGFIELD Emily Wingfield was born in 1823 and married Robert Langdon,

April 13, 1840. They had one girl, Engeline, born in 1842. Robert died and Emily married her brother Elijah's brother-in-law, Andrew A. Stell on Jan. 1, 1848. Emily and Andrew had six children: -

"Lenora Ste:ll, born r8J,1.8. -:": ;"; Lucinda Stell, born 1852 and married G. C. Griffin Indiana was born 1854 and married S. T. East John H. Stell, born 1856 and married Martha Dickson(born Aug.

28, 1854). They had four children: Horace Stell, born Nov. 17, 1876 married Mary Lamb (daughter

of John Lamb and Sarah Kelley) Nemecies Stell, born 1878 Charles Stell, born June 28, 1880 and died Oct. 25, 1902 Henry Stell, born July 11, 1883 and died Aug. 1, 1903 Mary E. Stell, born April 30, 1858 and married Dr. Richard

H. Ruth€ri'ord in 1874. (Richard H. Rutherford was born 30 "April 1838 , he was the son of Archebald Hamelton Ruther­ford and Mary M. Parrish). Mary E. and Richard Rutherford had four children: Charles William C. Verna L" and a child named Stell Rutherford.

Emily Wingfield Stell died September 1, 1859. Andrew A. Stell died Feb. 22, 1912.

SAMUEL H. WINGFIELD Samuel H. Wingfield; fourth child of Charles and Marion was

born April 8, 1825. He married on Oct 8, 1852 to Sarah (Sallie) . Sarah was born May 14, 1832 They had six children:

Samuel H. Wingfield, born Sept 14, 1894, died Mar. 25, 1925 Joseph D. Wingfield, born Sept 18, 1900, died Dec. 18, 1901

Benjamin F. Wingfield died Mar. 15, 1913. Mary (Mollie) Smith Wingfield died 6 June 1933. Both are buried at Antoine, Arkansas. Samuel H. Wingfield was a Justice of the Peace of Pike County, Ark. He was a good Democrat and a member of the Christian Church.

JOSEPH WINGFIELD All that is known about Joseph Wingfield, is he was the fifth

child born to Charles and Marian, and was born in 1827. WILLIAM WINGFIELD

William Wingfield, born 1828 was the sixth child of Charles and Marian. He married Margaret Johnson on July 7, 1859. They had seven children: three boys and four girls. John Monroe was the oldest, born Oct. 1, 1860 and married Nanna Ballard. They had seven children: William Durfur, who married Dora Jones; Margaret Elizabeth married Claude L. Hollan; Edna married Dr. G. E. Mullins; Wiley Clark married Anna Covington; Ada May married C. I. Warren; Beulah was the sixth child; and one died in infancy. William Dufur born Nov. 2, 1880 was the oldest child of John Wingfield and Nanna Ballard Wingfield. He was one of the pioneer oil men of Columbia Co., Ark. His name has traveled far and wide as the discovery of the ElDorado's second oil pool. Was the Justice of the Peace of Emerson. Mr. Wingfield married July 27, 1901 to Dora Jones; they had twelve children: seven boys and five girls: Ray; Ilie; Cecil; Arlis; Alvern; Gleen; Delma; Ina; Lenel and Daymon; and one son who died in infancy.

JANE WINGFIELD Jane Wingfield the seventh child of Charles and Mariam Wing­

field was born in 1831 and married John Elkins on October 26, 1854. THOMPSON WINGFIELD

Thompson Wingfield was born in 1835 and married Emily Wesson, daughter of Henry J. Wesson and Emeline . Emily and Thomp-son had one child Henr~ C. born Aug. 6, 1862 and died Oct. 16, 1882. Thompson died before 1870 and Emily married Mr. Kirkham, they had three children: Joseph; Ida E.; and Quincy. Later after Mr. Kirk­ham, Emily married William A. Buckner and they had one son: John M. Buckner. Emily was born, March 30, 1844 and died Feb. 9, 1909.

E. MARION WINGFIELD E. Marion Wingfield, all that is known about her, is she was

the ninth child of Charles and Marion, born in 1835. ADELINE WINGFIELD

Adeline Wingfield, was born in 1838. She was the tenth and last child born to Mariam Wingfield.

NATIONAL SOCIETY UNITED STATES DAUGHTERS OF 1812 To preserve and increase knowledge of the history of the Am­

erican people by the preservation of documents and relics, the mark­ing of historical spots, and recording of family histories and tra­dations, the celebrating of patriotic anniversaries, and especially the emphasizing and teaching of heroic deeds in the civil, military and naval life of those who molded this government of the United States and saved it from foes both within and without, between the close of the American Revolution and the close of the War of 1812. In general, its one purpoase is the promotion of patriotism.

Any woman over eighteen, of good character, who offers satis­factory proof of lineal decent from an ancestor who rendered civil, military or naval service to this country during the years 1784-1815, inclusive, is eligible to membership, provided the applicant be ac­ceptable to the society. All members under eighteen years of age shall be called "Juniors"

NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS of the AMERICAN COLONISTS The object of this society is about the same as the above society.

The member must be a lineal decendant of an ancestor who rendered ser­vice, civil or military in any of the colonies prior to July 4, 1776.

THE ARKANSAS PIONEERS The object of this Association shall be, primarily historical,

to gather, preserve and print facts events and traditions for a true history of Arkansas prior to 1850. Special attention shall be given to the history of the lives of the men and women whose influ­ence, work and persistent efforts resulted in the formation of Ark­ansas through Territory and Statehood up to 1850. This association shall also be SOCial, to bring into closer communication and to per­petuate firmer friendship among the descendants of the Pioneers of Arkansas.

Qualifications for membership. Any citizen who is a lineal dec­endant of a person, or persons, who permanently settled in Arkansas prior to 1850, shall be eligible for membership. Provided theapp1i­cant be acceptable to the society.

Mrs. Nance was a most esteemed lady beloved and respected by her neighbors and friends. She leaves a husband and several little children to mourn her loss. To the bereaved husband and little ones, we tender our sympathies in this hour of their grief.

Capt. T. J. Childress. Information carne to relatives in this city yesterday

afternoon, from Williston, Tenn. that Capt. T. J. Childress had died at that place. There was no especial surprise in the announcement, as deceased was 80 years of age and very feeble. Capt. Childress was a resident of Memphis until about seven years ago, when he went to Williston to spend the remaining days of his life with his daughter, Mrs. W. B. Mills. Many years ago, and until his sight became too imperfect to further continue the work, he was a steamboat pilot and one of the best on the river, his service being mainly with local trade packe • The remains will be interred in Elmwood this mornIng, the funeral occuring from Stanley's undertaking establishment.

The FEE and CHERRY FAMILIES were ~oined together by the mar­riage of William Cherry and Jean (Jane) Fee on August 15, 1811).

FEE lineage through the ~amilies of Dempster and Scott.

1. David Dempster, b. ca 1661 in Scotland. During the reign o~ King James II o~ England, his family moved to County Antrim, Ireland. 2. Andrew Dempster, son o~ David Dempster, was born ca 1696 in

County Antrim, Ireland. 3. One of the children of Andrew Dempster was Margaret Dempster

born ca 1731. She m. Robert Scott. She died in 1793. Among their children was Rachel Scott.

3.*William Fee was born in 1720 in Belfast, Ireland, where he was stationed as a Captain in the English Army. In 1749 he married Lady Elizabeth Dawson. The remains of William and Elizabeth Fee lie in County, Antrim, Ireland. 4.*Robert Fee, son o~ William Fee was born in October 1750

in County Antrim. He married Rachel Scott in 1780; em­igrated to America, with his family, arriving in Charles­ton, South Carolina on Christmas day of 1791, and settled in Chester District~ west o~ the Catawba River. Robert Fee died July 21, 1~4l in Indiana, U.S.A. He had left the South because o~ his aversion to slavery. 5. Jean (Jane) Fee, a daughter o~ Robert and Rachel Fee,

was born June 21, 1789 in Ireland, and at the age of two years was brought to America, where her ~amily settled in Chester District, South Carolina; she mar­ried William Cherry on August 15, 1811; she died Dec­ember 6, 1846.

ried Letitia Leach; emigrated to America and settled in South Carolina in 1782; died ca 1793. 5. William Cherry, son of Robert and Letitia Leach Cherry,

These readings were taken on two visits to the old cemetery at Douglas. We would never have found it alone, but a kind young man living nearby knew the spot well as he was a member of the Douglass Baptist Church who makes an attempt to maintain the graves and do an occasional cleanup. It was a very overgrown spot in the middle of a cornfield.

It is regretted that people in general are so careless in keeping their family history, not only is it interesting to those who may come after, but fortunes are frequently lost for the want of such evidence. Even now in trying to recall our family history I have to depend on my memory alone and tho I can remember facts I cannot give dates, not having the usual Bible Records to refer to for your Father's family.

Mungo and Robert Douglass (brothers) left Scotland in the old story phrase to seek their fortune, Mingo went to the British Indies and settled in Jamaica where the family heard he died single and left a large fortune. The other brother Robert settled on the Potomas U. S. and married Miss Annie Wallace of Maryland; by whom he had two sons, Robert and John Wallace, who married Miss May Manly and died leaving an infant son named Robert Harrison (your father). Dr. Robert Douglass died single.

Miss Manly was the daughter of Harrison Manly, who owned a farm adjoining the Mount Vernon estate; which was sold to General Washington after the death of Mr. Manly, who left four children, one son and three daughters, the eldest of whom married an English­man named Aldridge. The next was your father's mother; the young­est married Dr. Wm. Wright; their mother was Margaret Barry before marriage, which family claimed descent from the Earl of Barrymore and missed a large fortune by losing the records to prove their claim, as in the case of Mungo Douglass, the papers were put into the hands of an eminent lawyer of Alexandria, Mr. Swan, whose office was burned and those papers with it.

Now I will tell all I know of my family. Early in the last century two Scotsmen probably brothers settled in the Valley of Cone­cogeague Pennsylvania - driven by religious persecution from their native land. Fergus McLean was the head of the family from whom descended the late Chief Justice John McLean - so much I learned from his obituary - he removed from Penn. to Ohio. The other Donald McLean was the founder of our branch, the change in spelling the name was done by our Uncle John, who living in the same town with John McLean, afterward well known as Chief Justice. Their letters would be exchanged at the Post Office, so to prevent that, the change was made. Our Grandfather was a farmer from all I could learn, prosper­ous and wealthy in such property as Northern farmers have. His farm was sold at his death for $100. per acre. He employed a number of hired hands. He married Miss Margaret Hatchet, by whom he had nine sons; five of them lived to manhood. His wife must have been a model farmer's wife; my father has told me that she had all the clothing, including bed clothes spun and woven at home. She also kept a large dairy and sold a great deal of butter and in the summer when it be­came too warm to save butter she usually made 500 lbs. of cheese each summer for sale besides supplying her own large family. Her mode of making blankets was new at least to me. The cloth all wool was woven thick and soft, then put in a large smoth trough which was then fill­ed with warm soap suds, then the boys rolled up their pants and dan­ced on it until well pulled (fine fun they thought it) when clean and dry it was carded with Teazle Burrs I have been told that wool­en manufacturers have found no substitute for the Teazle Burrs yet, she also made printed linen for bed curtains and windows. The linen was spun, wove and bleached she procured stamps and colors. Many

other anecdotes are greatly to her praise have I heard, but the highest compliment was from an old friend of my father's, who said it was believed in the neighborhood that she had a Brownie or dom­estic Fairy who did all her work, which proves that she did not fuss or scold - no wonder her husband was inconsolable after her death, only surviving her one week. His physician said he certain­ly died of a broken heart if anyone ever did. After his death the family was broken up, his brother was absent attending Congress in Philadelphia, when he returned he sold off everything and put the boys who were old enough to trades.

The eldest, Jeremiah about eighteen, took his portion by the laws of premogeniture as then existing in Penn. this was one half of the estate; he went to the then territory of Ohio, began his career as a surveyor, rose rapidly, was an intimate friend of Gen. Cass and represented a district of Ohio in Congress. He took charge of his youngest brother Patrick; a very small boy when his parents died. John also refused to stay where his uncle put him and he set­tled in Ohio, afterward he came to Ark. and was a merchant in Little Rock for many years. He died wealthy, my father was poorer than either of his brothers, he was apprenticed to a carpenter and learn­ed the trade. Having an education and superior business talents he soon escaped from the drudgery of the business and became an archi­tect and under his supervision some of the most elegant public build­ings in Washington and ~exandria have been built. Bad health ob­liged him to retire to the country. He bought a farm in Fairfax County and settled there but when planting became the rage he and your father both sold their farms at a sacrifice and after a toil­some drag over a stone turnpike to Wheeling, 300 miles, found the Ohio solow they feared it would freeze up before they could get out. No steamboat could get over the Falls at Louisville so they bought one of those immense flats 90 ft. long and put all our live stock on board, run up partitions; one room for ourselves and one for the servants and one for the horses, eight in number. We left our old homes on the 4th of Nov. 1823 and arrived at the old post Jan. 16th 1824 and squatted on the Indian lands where the planta­tion of\Mr. S. Lennox now stands. When the lands came into market prefering a front on the river~ they sold their claim to Mr. Lennox and removed to this place in 1~27, where they have remained ever since. Our family history from this time some of you may write for others.

I should be very ungrateful to omit mention in this family re­cord, of my Grandfather and Grandmother Turner, the parents of my mother, with whom I resided from the time my parents moved into the country ,until I left school. They were the best old people in the world and to me the most affectionate and indulgent of parents. My Grandmother's name was Elizabeth Blanchard before marriage. My Grandfather's was Alexander W. Turner, both families came originally from France as the names show. Toneur being Anglicised into Turner. The family said they were Hugonots who escaped before the massacre of St. Bartholemew. I had the dictionary they studied English from. My Grandfather went into the revolution at eighteen years of age. He was born at Perth Amboy, N. J. His mother was a widow in re­duced circumstances who died in his house in Alexandria. She was chiefly remakrable for her family pride. My Grandfather received an appointment in the Navy Yard Washington, that supported his family

very comfortably, they had but two children the eldest Mary, my mother married Isaac Mclain, my father. They had two children, myself the eldest, the other John Blanchard died single. He was the noblest specimen of manhood I ever saw. I must add I am proud of my descent from parents and grandparents who lived un­blemished lives and have passed into the Rest prepared for the Faithful.

*********** CONFEDERATES TO BRAZIL

Have you lost a Confederate Ancestor or his brother? Descendants may now be living in'Brazil, South America. Between the years 1865-1868 five ships, four sailing from New Orleans and one from Galvestop Texas, set thelr, ,course southward. These 1,800 people including Gonfedera~e Soldiers, their families and sympath­izers, were originally from Virginia, North Carolina, South Caro­lina, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisana and Texas. FOur of the ships landed in Santos, which is the seaport for Sao Paulo, a fifth landed at Belen, Northern Brazil and families. settled in Belem and Santarem. In 1968 a monument was erected on the 100 Anniversary of the last ship's arrival in Brazil.

This past summer a visit was made to descendents of John Rowe born 1846, left Florida 1866, died Villa Americana 1922. John Rowe, son of Rev. : Steven H. Rowe of Garland County, Arkansas (who married 2nd Mrs. Elizabeth(Joiner) Murphy Smith) is buried in the Confed­erate Cemetery at Santa Barbara d'Oiest, Sao Paulo State, Brazil.

All of the second generation Rowes have passed on the third generation speaks English with a Southern accent, the 4th and 5th only speak Portuguese and have married Brizilians or Brazilian Italians. Many family trates and resemblances that have passed down in the Brizilian descendents also show in their Arkansas Cou­sins who are called "their cousins from the North" (Primos do Norte).

Letter of May, 1973 from t,he U. S. Consulate, Henry G. Krausse, Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil states in part- "The Descendents of the Am­ericans who came to Brazil following the Civil War are now scatter­ed throughout the country. Manyal'e still concentrated in the towns of Villa Amerecana and Santa Barbara d'Oesta, also in the City of Campinos located about 60 or 70 miles from the City of Sao Paulo .. Most of the descendents no longer speak English, some fam­ilies have retained the langu~e' as well :t,h.lil"Zro~.d1tj,9ns oCour Southern States. The original'families have established a Confed­erate Cemetery on a farm not far from Santa Barbara d'Oeste, and this has been faithfully maintained by the descendents, who gather there from all of Brazil twice a year for picnics and Memorial Ser­Vices ... "

Mrs. Judith MacKnight Jones, has written in Portuguese a his­tory of the descendents entitled "Soldado Descansa- (Soldiers Rest). Samuel Thomas Tillery, Sr. born February 1848, Decater, Tenn­essee,died 1923 (believed to be buried at Antioch Cemetery in Saline County, Arkansas). Married Tinny (Tennie) Rhinehart a half Cherokee Indian girl from Sweetwater, Louden County, Tennessee. They married in Meigs County, Tennessee, August 2, 1866 (Meigs Co. Marriage Records). Samuel joined the Confederate Army at age 13 t years. Came home and married Tennie and they first settled in or near Chattanooga, later moved to Saline County, Arkansas.

He raised 13 children by his first Wife, and 14 be a second marriage. (This information from J. B. Lemley, Pope County His­torical Association). Tennie was born in 1848. Issue by Tennie: 1. James H. W. H. Moon, grandson of Dr. W. B. Moon, said the Moon family came from Alabama in the late 1860's and bought'a homestead west of Rosebud. The house was directly across the present road from the Cemetery. Dr. Moon later purchased a large tract of land in the Cadron Bottoms.

The nine unmarked graves are members of the families of the children of Dr. Moon: these are the families of Henry Ware, Dave Copeland, Billy Powell, A. L. McKay, Dr. W. B. Jr., George Layne, Sam Pearson. The Walters Family were good friends but were not related. All others buried here are members of the Moon Family. Will those of you who clearly write your name and address on all material, please bear with me while I continue to st­ress this necessity? Two good ~ueries can not be used this time: (1) no name or address (2) name only. Perhaps the name and address was on the envelope but by the time these are passed around and I finally get to the process of editing them the envelope is separated and no way to identify it.

A rubber name and address stamp is a good investment. Use it freely ON EACH PAGE, PLEASE.

Now it is an easy step from admonishing you to clearly mark your correspondence to admonishing you to .mark all mater­ial you collect. On each item you collect list the source and date collected. (1) Name and address of person giving inform­ation. (2) Name, author, publisher and date of book and it is also good to list the library where the book was obtained. (3) List Name, date, page and column of newspaper. (4) On cen~ sus records list county, state, year. township and family numo­ber and page. (5) Others - enough information to clearly iden­tify. As you become more experienced you will want to re­check to see that your notes are correct, obtain copies for proof of records and refer others to check your source. The marking of material will save much search time and consider the value it will add to your work when it is passed on to someone in the next generation. Many family histories are be­ing published without documentation. They may have beautiful printing and binding but without proof of material they are worthless.

Proof that the written account is not always accurate appeared in a recent issue of a local newspaper. This was an interesting and well written story of an old house built in 1837 and still owned and inhabited by descendants of the ori­ginal owner. The original owner is buried in the local cem­etery and would have been age 3 years when he built the house. The family did not appear on the county : census until 1870. The first deed to the family in the county records was 1866 but the deed for the house site was not obtained until 1871. The story was written from personal interviews and a trip to the county library, courthouse or cemetery was never considered. This 35 years mistake may well cause hours of fr­uitless search and frustration by future generations.

Rhoad lived in Marion County, in 1850 and in Crawford County, in 1860. Their children married

Snoddy and have located a branch of the family in Greenbrier, Faulkner County, Arkansas. This was John Snoddy born about 1838 in S. C., died about 1887 in Arkansas, buried in Needs Creek Cemetery. 1918, contacted T.B. and the service sent him home to Collins, Arkansas, where he died, Nov. 1918. His wife then remarried. He had a Sister, Willie, who married ? Wilson, and she died in Monticello, Arkansas in 1957.

Walter Trimble and his daughters were in Hempstead County, Arkansas by 1843 and he died there before 1848. Believe he is connected with William Trimble (also spelled Turnbull) shown in J. P. census of Robertson County, Tenn.; appears on the 1820 census of Smith Co., Tenn.; appears in Sumner County, Will Book I page 196 as witness to Will of John B. Gillam of Smith County, Tenn., Aug. 12, 1811.
