Due to the large number of queries received, we have for the past two years adjusted the September issue of The Arkansas Family Historian to accommodate the volume on hand. This has helped tremendously in assuring that all queries sent by our menbers will be published in the year they are sul:r!litted .
Wk will ask again that you sul:r!lit your query with your 1990 dues, using the renewal form that will be in the December issue. Qleries will be published generally in the order of receipt.

Have you submitted your surname directory form? Go ahead, while you're
thinking about it, and complete the form so you can be included in Arkansas Genealogical Society's surname directory to be published in early 1990. We want YOUR information! Finding new cousins can be so rewarding - they may have your third great-grand father's family Bible or wonderful photos of your ancestors. Participating in the surname directory project may lead you to new cousins and new information. The form only asks for the last name of the family, the county in Arkansas, and an approximate time period - most you know from memory. Best of all, entering your family surnames is freel AGS will be offering the completed directory for sale for a nominal amount to members, and a little higher amount to non-members, but there is no obligation to purchase one. Complimentary copies of the directory will be sent to libraries with major genealogical collections.
Have you made your reservations for the AGS Fall Seminar in Eureka Springs, November 3rd and 4th? We already have registrations coming in from as far away as several states. Pre-registration closes October 15th, so send your registration form in today - it is included in this issue of The Arkansas Family Historian. If you've always planned to attend an AGS fall seminar but just never could work it into your schedule, this is the one to clear your calendar for. We'll look forward to seeing you there!
Invitations, announcements and encouragements aside, I have a brief editorial comment. I want you to think about your roll in the organizations (including AGS) in which you're a member. Your support, your contributions, your interest, your ideas build societies. Are you a builder? Are your efforts toward positive results? Let's pull together to maintain, boost, and expand our organizations. Encourage and applaud the efforts of fellow members. Don't waste a minute of your precious time with the evil gremlin, Negativism. That devil will find his way into any society without your assistance. Work to create a wonderful, cooperative spirit with your fellow members. Accept as much or as little as they are able to give. Listen to new ideas and keep a cheerful, positive attitude. Be proud of your role as a builder and keep up the good work!

Material submitted for this 'Query Section' must pertain to an area of Arkansas at some point in time. Since we always work with a "backlog" of queries, we have no time-table for printing them, as we work several months ahead of the actual appearance of this quarterly. We do, however, strive to print them in the order in which they are received. In order to be fair to all our members, PLEASE SUBMIT NO MORE THAN ONE QUERY AT A TIME AND PREFERABLY ONLY ONE PER CALENDAR YEAR.
Queries are limited to members only. It simplifies the work of the all-volunteer staff of this publication if you send your queries with your membership fee, to the Arkansas Genealogical Society, PO Box 908, Hot Springs, AR 71902-0908. Queries should be confined to approximately fifty words. '
If the name of the County is known and included, it increases your chance of receiving replies to your questions. Always give a full name and a date for reference.

MARRIAGE RECORDS MONROE COUNTY. ARKANSAS. BOOK D. 1860-1877 by Jo Claire English, PO Box 206. Clarendon.AR 72029. Soft-cover, velo bind, 70 pp., surname index, $10.00 postpaid. This book contains 1,082 marriages, with 31 credentials for ministers. It is the second oldest Monroe Co. marriage record in existence, and contains marriages from 8 Jan. 1860 thru 28 Nov. 1977. As it covers the Civil War period. the last entries during the war were recorded in 1962. when the courts were suspended and all records were removed and hidden until the courts resumed in July 1965. Although some of the marriage entries are brief, some contain names of parents, place of marriage and other helpful information. In one record (Jones to Sloat) the color of hair and eyes of the bride and groom were given. The index includes grooms', brides and ministers credentials. - BJM.
EARLY OUACHITA COUNTY.ARKANSAS, TAX RECORDS 1846-1860 by Yvonne Spence Perkins. 2107 54th. Lubbock. TX 79412, softbound. 202 pages. $15 postpaid. Tax lists are such wonderful sources for genealogists and Mrs. Perkins has made these early lists for Ouachita County accessible in her book. Taxpayers are listed in alphabetical order (with an index to non-resident and original land owners) in tabular form. Personal and real taxes were combined in one assessment at this time in Arkansas and where land descriptions are given, even the quarter section is listed. The visual presentation of the material is especially well done. Helpful period maps enhance the book. Subsequent volumes containing the Ouachita County tax lists are in preparation by Mrs. Perkins and we applaud her efforts to make this little-known. little-used resource available.-DWA
