EDITOR'S NOTE: J. M. Wolf, 11011 Hedwig Shadows, Houston, TX 77024 "I am enclosing my recently completed Outline of the WOLF FAMILY for publication in our ARKANSAS FAMILY HISTORIAN. I am working on a much more comprehensive History of the Family and would appreciate any leads on Wolf information anyone may come across in the future."

The Wolf Family History is truly the history of the American Pioneer, moving ever Westward in search of the newer and better lands. According to Family Tradition, our first known ancestor, Michael Wolf (Woolf), brought his sons: Michael, Jacob, David, and Wolfgang, to America in 1750. This has been verified to some degree by the passenger list of the ship "Richard And Mary· which arrived in Penn. in 1754. All of the names mentioned above are found on this list.

The Family moved to North Carolina before the Revolutionary War and settled in Salisbury District, Rowan County, N. C. In 1799, the Family moved once again, this time to Hopkins County, Kentucky, where they remained until 1820.

The Wolf's came to Arkansas when it was known as Arkansas County, Missouri Territory. They settled in the present day counties of Baxter, Marion, and Izard. The men of the Wolf Family have served in the Revolutionary War, The War of 1812, The Civil War, The SpanishAmerican War, The First World War, The Second World War, and the Korean War. The civil War, which saw more than 30 Wolf Family Males serve the Confederacy, destroyed the unity of the Family and caused most of it's . members to migrate to Texas in the l870s.

I will attempt to outline this large Family in the following narrative, and will include, at its' end, a letter written by my grandfather, Dr. Joseph Marion Wolf, which may shed some additional light on the life of the Arkansas Pioneers.

I. Jacob Wolf, the earliest member of the family on whom any verified information has been established. He was apparently born in Germany ca 1740 and came to America with his father and brothers in 1754, landing in Pennsylvania. He moved to North Carolina before the Revolution and settled in Rowan County, North Carolina. Theearliest date on him is 1783 when he became Constable of Rowan County. In the 1790 Census, Jacob Wolf of Rowan County, N. C. shows one white male over 16 years of age. He served with a company of rangers during the Revolutionary War, under Capt. Peter Hedrick. He moved with his son, Michael, to Hopkins County, Kentucky in 1799 and hence to Izard County, Arkansas, in about 1820. He died in Izard County after 1830. I know the names of only two of his children:

1. George Wolf lived in Hopkins County, Kentucky from 1799 to 1821 when he moved to Lawrence County, Missouri.

2. Michael Wolf, b.? d. after 1840. (SeeII)

II. Michael Wolf, the son of Jacob Wolf, was probably born in Pennsylvania about 1760. He married Catrina Hedrick (Heidrich) of

Salisbury District, Rowan County, North Carolina ca 1780. He owned considerable farm land in Rowan County as well as a blacksmith shop in the town of Salisbury. It was in North Carolina that his first four children were born. In 1799 Michael moved, with his father, brothers, wife, and children, to Hopkins County, Kentucky. He received a Land Grant on Deer Creek, a branch of Green River, in what is now Christian County, Kentucky in 1803. Michael became an established citizen of Hopkins County, owning several farms and appearing as an executor on a number of wills. During the War of 1812 he served as Captain of his own company in Caldwell's Regiment of Mounted Militia in General Samuel Hopkins Campaign against the Indians in the Fall of 1812. In 1820 Michael, his Father, Jacob, and all but one of Michael's children, followed his eldest son, Jacob, to the Territory of Arkansas, settling near the present town of Norfork, Arkansas. He died between 1840 and 1850; he and his wife are both buried in an old cemetery "near the first Masonic Lodge built in Northern Arkansas, located on the bank of the White River about 4 miles down river from Norfork. His children were:

Note: (1) I have not ex ponded upon the collateral lines involved in this outline, however, in the event any of the readers of the Arkansas Family Historian are interested, I have a great deal of information on the Eaton Family and the Adams Family (thanks to Sue N. Farrand) Which I will be glad to share.

(2) On October 9th, 1975 Miss Mary Gertrude Wolf, my paternal Aunt, passed away. I, and .anyone else interested in the Wolf Family History, owe her a great debt of gratitude; for it was her wealth of memories, covering a period of 95 years that gave me both the information and the inspiration to begin delving into the Family History.

EDITOR'S NOTE. The following article was written by Dr. C. Richard King,

Austin Texas, for the Texas Co-op Power newspaper, September 1976 issue.

Jacob and Holland Hankins, born 1872, were twin sons of Frank Hankins, born 1847, Tennessee. Frank Hankins was son of William Harrison Hankins, born 1825, Tennessee and Martha (Albright) born 1826, North Carolina.

William Harrison Hankins was son of carter Hankins and Lucinda (Austin) who Came to Drew County, Arkansas before 1850. William Harrison Hankins and family settled in that part of Arkansas between Drew County and Pine Bluff, Arkansas. In the 1860 census, they were counted in Jefferson County and in 1880 in Dorsey County.

OUr many thanks to Mrs. L. S. (Marie Hankins) Orrick, 3629 Wedgway, Fort Worth, Texas 76133 for bringing this to our attention and sharing with us. She a180 wrote Dr. King for permission to share this with the members and readers of our Arkansas Family Historian and received a letter giVing his permission. -219-

HANKINS NORMAL COLLEGE

A SCHOOL FOR THE PEOPLE PAQE 12 • CO.OP POWER

• "THE LITl'LE COLLEGE on the hill" is no more, wrote historian Rupert N. Richardson.

"Many decades have 'Passed since I.st its bell tolled the noon hour or closed the day's classwork at five or six o' clock. The torch it bore was not a brilliant one. but it gave a sure light, and around it gathered scores of youths who later served their country well,"

Such a college was Hankins Nonnal, whose students became judges, COD

gressmen,'university professors, teachers, housewives, ranchers, and civic leaders-but most of all, solid citizens.

Hankins Nonnal's history began when Tom Vaught, his wife, eight children, and a dog named Jim arrived in a three- ago~ravan from Black Springs, Arkansas. It was in 1l!96 that the Vaug s u oaded their household goods in Eastland County, Texas.

When it was called to his attention that the Leon Springs School trustees had heen unable to secure a teacher, Tom Vaught suggested that they contact an educator he had known in Arkansas. The school administrators did so and were delighted with the man who took charge of their school.

Grand View trustees, experiencing the same problem, decided to follow the same procedure. They asked Vaught to contact a teacher. He wrote J. H. Hankins, who accepted the job.

A year later, J. H:s twin brother, J. F., Hankins, began teaching at Breckenw

I'

ridge. In a short time, Gorman, a commu-!

nity boasting a bank, railway station, two cotton yards, the usual mercantile, ready-towwear, and grocery stores, hired the Hankins brothers as superintendent and principal of the school.

When the twins took over, they brought with them an accumulation of four college degrees, administrative ability, common sense, and superior teaching techniques. As Mrs. Bob Boucher of Post explains it, they we

. teachers "from the innate part of their ! souls:' , In 1905 they realized a dream. opening a college. When they swung : open the doors to Hankins Normal, : they attracted students from Stephens, I Eastland, Comanche, and Erath counj ties. i With the backing of Gorman I merchants and area fanners, the l Hankins twins built a threewstory

\

academic center. On the first floor were classrooms. The main auditorium

I which also served as a stuay hall occupied the second floor. And on the

third floor were laboratories for busiw

ness courses. Eventually, the college had a stall

of a dozen teachers who saw that their students learned Latin, English grammar, oratory. expression, bookkeeping, shorthand, typing, history, literature, music, and science.

Within several years, the campus included a dormitory for men students, who found that large wash tuhs could he used not only for baths but also for bouncing down stairs.

Women students who came from outwo~wtown rented rooms in private

homes. One 83-year.old resident of Gorman says practically every house in town had a Hankins student at one time or another. Board cost $10 to $12 a month.

The bovs' d~nnitory burned, and in 1912 the doors of Hankins College were bolted. The classroom building was converted into a private residence, nnd the Hankins families eventually moved to Lubbock, where they were quite successful in real estate, cotton and cattle. Ever interested in education, J. H. donated two whole cit" blocks for the building of the

Texas Technological College campus. By the early days of the depression,

former Hankins students had hegun to make names and places for themselves, and it was suggested that they hold a reunion.

For years, exes were devoted to homecomings. Even during the \VorId War II years, they missed only two get-togethers, even though transportation was limited hy gas and tire rationing. Then, in 1965, 1.5 Hankins exes met in Gorman. Thirteen voted to do away with the annual event.

THOMAS IRVIN ROOP by - B. O. Roop

My father, Thomas Irvin Roop, 402 West 4th Street, Heavener, Oklahoma recalled one of the early events 6f his youth.

While his father, William Henry Reop and his mother, Margaret Rebecca (Gragg) Roop, were living in the vicinity of the "Page Community", Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. Mr. Roop heard about the construction of the proposed QUEEN WILHELMINA INN atop Rich Mountain, a few miles to the east in Arkansas.

He and his sons had made their living ,working timber", selling railroad ties, and saw logsl from Blansett in Scott County, Ark., west down the Blackfork River Valley, through Blackfork, Arkansas and Page, Indian Territory and on south as far as Tusklhoma along the Kiamichi River in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory for some 18 years, and it was here on the Kiamichi River near Tuskahoma, that TOM RooP was born in a covered wagon 25 September 1892, with a Choctaw Indian Woman acting as Mid-wife.

It was while living at Page, that W. H. RoOp heard that trouble was being had, wearing the steel rims off the wagon wheels from having to use the brakes so much on the descent down the mountain, from the construction site of the QUEEN WILHELMINA INN.

He approached those in charge of construction and ask for the job of hauling supplies up to the Construction site, and was welcomed to the job.

This was about 1898. He took six Donkeys and used them with two "strapped packs" that would hold about 100 pounds each and with these donkeys he would ·pack- up sand, cement and lime and other materials that could be handled with these pack animals. This from an elevation of some 950 feet on the Itall~y floor to about 2800 or 2900 feet on top of the mountain, and a distance of some three miles or so.

After he got enough money from these donkeys, he went south toward Mena, Arkansas to "WHITE ROCK PRAIRIE" and bought a team of large white horses and a wagon and used these to haul the heavier and more bulky materials up the mountain.

After unloading the supplies and materials up on top of the mountain, he would cut a small tree with a heavy brush top, and tie it to the coupling pole on the wagonl to act as a "drag" or an additional brake. He didn't have to use the brakes on the wagon much as he descended the mountain and in so doing, saved the steel rims of the wagon wheels from severe wear, and the team -didn't have to pull very hard to come down the mountain either w •

Through the years, I have thought involved in the original construction. team could make each day; the numerous the animals wblow· and water.

about the labor and hard work The number of trips that the

·rest stops· necessary to let

Now days the ascent is made on a hard surfaced road in an air conditioned car, in a matter of 5 to 8 minutes, from the valley below.

Even more interesting to me is to reflect on what my Grandfather would think about the huge railroad steam engine, sitting on top of the mountain: and it makes me wonder how he would have solved that problem with his donkeys and team.

One thing couldn't have improved much though .through the years, and that is the view and scenic beauty of it all, here hight atop RICH MOUNTAIN, that places God's green earth so near heaven, that little additional effort is required to look up and about, and see the wonder of all in God's creation.

EDITOR's NOTE, Our thanks to B. O. Rocp, Route. 1, Fayetteville, Ark. 72701 and to Bill C. Hulsey (one of our Ark. Family Historian members) for thinking about our members & readers and getting the authority to release this very interesting, and heart warming bit of material from B. O. Roop. These two men are working together on the HULSEY-RooP-BARNES Family History. For those readers who live so far away, and will never see and enjoy RICH MOUNTAIN, a word of sympathy, as it is truly a wonderful sight, and to spend the night there is another wonder. Drop Mr. Roop a note if you too have enjoyed his article.

ARKANSAS CONFEDERATE TROOPS IN LOUISIANA

Irene Reid Morris, Curator, Camp Moore Confederate cemetery & Museum, Tangipahoa, LA 70465 - We've been told that some Arkansas Troops were among those brought from Vicksburg, to go to the Battle of Baton Rouge 5 Aug. 1862. More than 2,000 were ill here at the time

Any clues or scraps in Arkansas Family data about our Camp Moore will be appreciated. ANTHEM T. A. Anthem, Route 2 Box 95A, Liberal, Kansas 67901 BATES When Albert Ansley ANTHEM and his parents came to

America about April 1846, they settled near Batesville, Indiana. His parents died of typhoid fever about 1852, when Albert was 6 years old. Albert was put in an opphanage by an Uncle Tom ANTHEM, who did not care for him. Albert later ran away from the orphanage and stayed with some colored people until he was old enough to work. We have no record of where this orphanage was or the name of it. We have no record of the name of the colored people he stayed with or where they lived. Albert was a Drummer Boy at an early age in the Civil War. He was a Confederate (or Rebel for the South). We have no record of time or place where he enlisted in the War. Albert had a scar across his forehead, he said he got when he stopped to pick some apples and one of the enemy soldiers cut him with a saber and left him for dead. Albert remembered very little about his parents. He thought his mother's maiden name was Bates, and she was a very large German woman. His father was a very small Bohemian. He did not remember either of his parent's given names. Albert thought his Uncle Tom Anthem was a Minister and had 15 children, and Tom's father was a Saloonkeeper. Albert was very young, when he last saw his uncle, so Uncle Tom could have been an adopted uncle. Albert had a 4th grade education & was a blacksmith. We do not know where he received this training, he talked very little of his past life.

Albert Ansley ANTHEM was born on a ship between Germany and the United States, 7 April 1846 (another record 1856) and d~ed 11 OCtober 1923 at his farmhome 13 miles south and 4 miles west of 8th & Main Street at Woodward, Okla. 16 Sept. 1893, Albert ran in the Oklahoma race for land and homesteaded a farm northeast of Fay, Okla., in Dewey County.

On October 8, 1903 at Fay, Okla. "Indian Territory" in Dewey County he married Kate REININGER, born 30 Oct. 1872 at Columbia, Ill., and died 2 June 1952, at Alva, Okla., in a nursing home. Both Albert & Kate were buried "at South Persemmin Cemetery, 14' 1/2 miles south and 3 miles east of 8th & Main Street at Woodward, Okla. This place that Albert & Kate ANTHEM lived, was homesteaded in Kate REININGER's name (only it was spelled REINGER). The location of this place is Township 21 north, Range 21 West, Section 32 in Woodward County, 160 acres. When they arrived to homestead, they came as brother & sister and stayed in Woodward, OK.

They came from Fay, Okla. in a covered hayrack with 4 head of horses to pull it. Their twins were about 6 months old and they put them in a wooden cradle, Albert had made. They put a kerosene lantern near the cradle to keep the babies warm. The twins were named Tracie & Henry ANTHEM. They also had a spring-wagon with blacksmith tools and furniture, etc. and two horses to pull that. They came on 15 Dec. 1904.

After Albert's death in 1923 this place was sold to Ross Bellows, later Ross died and his son "Bud" Earl Bellows, got this farm as his part of his father's estate, he is still the owner in 1973.

While Albert lived on this farm, he played in a neighborhood band known as the "Carlile Band". He played a c b "flat" Clarinet. This was about 1911. This material was written by Theodore & Verla ANTHEM QUERY - We have a receipt where Albert Ansley ANTHEM paid taxes in

Phillips County, Ark., 7 Feb. 1884 for 1883. We also have a receipt of a registered letter No. 29 from the Post Office at Marvill, Ark., received 30 June 1883, this was addressed to G. W. James & Ross - Boston, Mass. There were four of us children. Tracie (dau.) Henry (twins) Henry died when he was about 14 months old. Tracie is still living, John died in 1949, Theodore Anthem. We are all married and have families. We have never found any others by the name of ANTHEM and we have looked about every place. We would appreciate any information about any of these people or anyone by the name of ANTHEM. Will exchange data.

HOBBS Mrs. Nanetta(HOBBS)Tice, 175 Jackson Ave., Bradford, Pennsylvania 16701 - My HOBBS data is on file at Nash

ville, Tenn., and several other places. The immigrant, Vincent HOBBS, Sr., (1735 to Md., ca 1769 to S. W. VA. near Abingdon) had a son JOB who went from VA. to Knox Co., Tenn.; to Illinois and finally to Madison Co., Arkansas, where he applied for Rev. War Pension 1859 at age 100. He lived a couple of years after that. I don't know about his own children, if any, and am at present typing up the pension papers from the Archives, since the script is hard to read. It will be some time before I have it finished, since my time is limited, however I have the Family Line in typescript, for anyone who wants it, available for cost of xerox at 10 cents a sheet, which is the library's charge. I also require money for first class postage. It would run three or four dollars for all depending on what the person wants. It does not include the pension papers typescript, which is not ready, nor any children of JOB, but for anyone descended from JOB (knowing they are his offspring) there is enough for a D.A.R. or S.A.R. membership, through JOB and his father, VINCENT HOBBS, SR. Children of Vincent HOBB, Sr., are shown, including JOB.

SMITH was 1/4 Choctaw Indian & these people look as though they might be 1/2 to full Blood Choctaw. They possibly lived in Arkansas in the l800s. I appreciate the help I have already received from the Arkansas Family Historian, maybe someone can help with this information.

Some of my relatives still live in Baxter Co, but they can only give bits & pieces of information, as they are too young to remember some of the things I need. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated & I will gladly exchange.

CAMPBELL MORGAN HOWARP STORY JOHNSON

Zeddie Carr campbell, Jr., 1423 Verdun Street, Winston Salem, North Carolina 27107 - I am writing in regard to a Family History on (PIERCIVAL) PIERCE .CAMPBELL of North Iredell CO., N. Carolina. Pierce CAMPBELL, had two sons, by the names of WILLIAM (Billie) CAMPBELL , WILLIAM R. CAMPBELL. The two Families moved to Arkansas

sometime after, or around 1850. Billie CAMPBELL'S two children: Alfred & Teresa CAMPBELL are mentioned in their Grandfather I s Will that was written in 1844. The William R. Campbell Family also moved to Arkansas, but at this time I have no information as to the exact date when they left Iredell Co., N. C., and moved to Ark. One of William R. Campbell's sons', HENRY CAMPBELL became a Doctor, and One of his daughters, ALICE CAMPBELL married a STORY. By around 1925, Mrs. STORY stated that upon the death of Dr. HENRY CAMPBELL the Family was all together, and they would not be able to attend the CAMPBELL FAMILY REUNION, that has been held intermitterly in Union Grove, North Carolina since October 1925. From information related to me by One of my cousins, the CAMPBELL Families that left North Carolina for Arkansas, settled somewhere near the White River in Izard or Sharp Count~es (maybe near Ash Flat, Ark.) A man by the name of Cave Johnson and his wife Fannie L. JOHNSON, claiming to be descendants of Pierce Campbell, got the Clerk of court, then WILL McLEOD, in Ash Flat, Ark., and Henry L. Roberts, Justice of the Peace to contact a Lawyer in Yadkin Co., North Carolina, to handle the matter for them. The date of the action was May 22, 1869. Either CAVE JOHNSON'S mother or his wife would have had to have been a CAMPBELL for him to claim a share of Pierce CAMPBt!LLtIS~ ESTATE. It has been told to me that after some time CAVE JOHNSON got his part of the ESTATE. If there is anyone that can help me locate the descendants of these families, I would greatly appreciate it, (or supply any information about them). William (Billie) Campbell married Jessie Morgan. William R. Campbell married Polly Howard. Alice Campbell married a Story. Cave & Fannie L. Johnson are their heirs.

We don lit know much about LIPPEATT except he was foreman at coal mines in Jenny Lind, Russellville, and Coal Hill, Ark. I don't even know where they are all buried, I do know where Esther Marsden Galloway's parents are buried. Richard Marsden is buried in Oak Cemetery, at Ft. Smith, Sebastain Co., Ark. Don't have any dates on him. His wife Jane Robinson & supposedly her father, name unknown, are buried in Douctlas'" Cemetery at Jenny Lind. John WIn. LIPPEATT's parents were .Thomas & Sarah LIPPEATT. Thomas died in 1894, place unknown. SARAH remarried to a MICK McLAUGHLIN and died Feb. 1920, place unknown. Ball, Recording Secretary (North Little Rock, AR) Mrs. Carroll C. cannon, Corresponding Sec. (Forrest City, AR) Mrs. Larry P. Clark, Historian (Little Rock, AR) Mrs. Hayle P. Hollis, Herald (Camden, AR) James L. Morgan, Parliamentarian (Newport, AR) Mrs. Mario B. Cia, Sr., Editor (Little Rock, AR)

1976 has been a wonderful year for most of us. OU!"_!l.embership has just grown and grown: We have run out of Arkansas Family Historian Quarterliev for the third time, first the March issue, then the June issue, and now already the September issue is out. But we just try to reprint, soon as the paper company can get our kind of paper and we get time to print, then collate, and finally get them to all the new members. Most of you have learned to value each and every issue of your Historian, and have found a good safe place to keep them (many are being bound in hard back covers). Do not distroy one copy (back issue or present issue). We have a list of members who are trying to complete their volumes & add to their Libraries & many of the early issues are no longer in print. We only reprint for the current year (which is some job to supply each new member with all the issues for the present year).

Our more than wonderful Membership Chairman, Ms. Margaret Hubbard has typed for this issue the entire membership to this date - NOVember I, 1976 - so now we can all know the members who belong to our Arkansas Family Historian. This has been a big undertaking, as some of the new members send their money to her and some send to 4200 "A" Street, which is fine, all reaches the same bank. Many have already paid their 1977 membership, some have paid thru 1979)

With all the Ancestor Charts being printed into four Volumes to this date, and our Arkansas Family Historian reaching most members on time, and our bills most all paid, we really do think we are all a pretty happy group.

Those of you who have not seen your Ancestor Charts in print yet, do not give up: Volume V has been gathered and will be available sometime before March 1977. Volume VI has been started already. After the desired number of Charts have been completed by the members, then they are numbered, printed, indexed, collated, stapled, and then ready for sale. So much work is done after they reach our Headquarters. The new members usually send their Charts right back, soon as they can, and the long-time members take a little longer.

We are really keeping a good record, for very little returned mail, for those who move and forget to let uS know (that really costs money) are becoming less and less. We have paid as much as 58 cents to get one Quarterly back from the mail-man. And we have to pay that, so we can tell, who it belongs to: The straighten out the address, and pay to get it started the right direction again. But out of over 700 sent in September only 7 returned (for one reaSon or another). We thought that was a pretty good record.

Already work has been done toward the March issue for 1977. That does not mean, we do not welcome additional material. We are always happy to see our material on hand in good condition. When you send information to be shared with others, and you want to help your editors, type with a good dark ribbon, clean the keys, single space (we hate to waste paper) just after the title, please give your name, address , zip code. Often some member will want to contact the contributor & add to the published material. Leave about 1 & 1/2 inch at the top and at least 1 inch margin. From one to 10 pages in length. If the article should be longer, use 14 inch paper, as it can be reduced to the correct size.

Many' ,have made 90od. contacts thru the Query section. You are always encouraged to help with even a tiny clue. Sometimes just to mention a County or township where the surname is found will help.
