President's Page, _______________ _

Another year is drawing to close and I hope you can look back at another year of successful genealogical research. My term as president of AGS is also drawing to a close and I wanted to take this final opportunity to tell you how much I appreciate having served in this capacity.

The new year will bring new leadership and more exciting genealogical events, Watch in January for the Ancestors TV series on your local Public Broadcasting System. It's a ten part series aimed at beginning genealogists, but should be interesting to all of us. Past AGS president Desmond Walls Allen will appear on the first episode of the series. Desmond has published more than 150 books on Arkansas resources and lectures nationally on developing one's searching skills. She was 'a1so awarded Dallas Genealogical Society's Distinguished Service Award for her many contributions to the field of genealogy. Arkansas Educational Television Network will be hosting a call-in segment and representatives of AGS should appear then also. This is a great honor for Desmond and for AGS.

Dallas Genealogical Society is hosting next year's Federation of Genealogical Society's annual conference. The theme is "Unlock Your Heritage "and will be held September 3-6, 1997. There is something for everyone at these conferences and I want to encourage everyone to attend if at all possible. To receive a program when they are printed in the Spring, write FGS, PO Box 83020, Richardson, TX 75083-0220, or you may FAX your request to 214-907-9727.

AGS is in the process of establishing a web page on the internet Board member David Malone of Fayetteville is spearheading the effort to post information about AGS on this growing medium of communication. Please write David and let him know if you have any suggestions. In that same vein, I want to tell all those who have communicated to me about the problems we have had with the Arkansas Family Historian, and that the editor and board are working to ensure the errors will be eliminated in future issues. Thanks for communicating with us when you see something wrong and always feel free to write to the board and let them know. Remember, we serve you.

This summer Carolyn Earle Billingsley reluctantly resigned from her place on the AGS board to pursue her Ph.D. inhistory at Rice University in Houston. Her replacement is Ms. Rhonda Norris of Russellville, Arkansas. You can read more about Rhonda elsewhere in the AFR.

Again, thanks to all of you who hav,e made these last years a real pleasure. I hope you continue to find your ancestors, and I wish you continued success in your research efforts.

New Tools for Old Tasks ----------------------------~

By Betty Littlejohn Harp, 3815 Idlewild Ave., North Little Rock, AR 721216: Email [email protected]

Cemeteries, court houses, libraries and archives will be necessary for the fumily history researcher, but some new tools can now be used that make searching from home possible. Although there is a cost involved, this should be compared with the travel, parking, dust, heat and inconvenience of personal site visits.

When personal computers became generally available for individual purchase, there were two basic uses for the genealogist. First, form letters of inquiry to others could be individualized and printed, rather than filling in the blanks on a form made on a copy machine. Second, a database could be set up to accept and store family information. This was a great step forward. Once information was entered in the computer and corrected, it would remain correct, new information could be added in the proper place, and upto-date copies could be made at any time.

Family history programs began to be developed, but as late as 1984 people interested in such use of computers were to find a program they liked, then purchase the computer it would run on. Today there are literally hundreds of such family history programs available that will run on almost any type of computer. Information can be

customized, indexed, and printed in a variety of styles. Most of these programs provide "menus": where selections are made for each task to be performed. This provides ease of operation for those just learning to use computers.

The development of the Genealogical Data Communications (GEDCOM) program has been another big step. This is a standard line format for exchanging information between genealogy programs. This means that persons intersected in the same lines can share computer disks with the information already entered, and not have to enter it again. Also, ifinformation has been entered in one program and the researcher decided another program would be more suitable, the transfer can be easily made.

Now, even research can be done at home through the personal computer by adding a modem to the computer, connecting to a telephone line and using bulletin boards, on-line services, or the Internet. There is a charge for these services, but it is nominal when you compare the expense of travel and the convenience of searching at home and at odd hours.

Many localities have bulletin boards and although they may not be devoted entirely to genealogy, many will have a section devoted to the subject. There are many bulletin boards totally devoted to

Page 154 • Volume 34, Number 4 -December, 1996 _______________ _

Page 9: Arkansas Family Historian - Arkansas Genealogical Societyomissions, or factual errors is that of the contributor, Manuscript Submissions Submitters of articles and material for possible

genealogy, but long distance charges apply ifthey are not in your area.

The on-line services such as America OnLine, Prodigy, Genie, Compuserve, etc., provide genealogy bulletin boards where queries are posted based on surnarnes, places, times, etc. Often a user will be able to share and receive information long sought! It is quite possible that a connection could be made with an individual willing to help who lives in the area where the researcher needs work done.

Correspondence with other people on practically any of the on-line services is now possible through E-mail and the Internet, although if several pages are to be exchanged, other means are better. GEDCOM files, mentioned earlier, can be transferred on-line.

Today most ofthe on-line services provide a gateway to the Internet. Although it is possible to directly access the Internet with the proper program or a local Internet access provider. New material is being made available on the Internet every day. Listed below are some of the ways genealogical information can be found on the Internet.

MAILING LISTS These contain queries, answers and general genealogical information much like bulletin boards, but users must enter a subscription (usually without charge). A group of these is then E-mailed to the individual and can be transferred off-line to be read at the user's leisure. Today there are Mailing Lists for many areas, including counties overseas, and also for many different surnames.

NEWSGROUPS These provide the same type information as Mailing Lists, but must be accessed by the user. In a newsgroup, queries are listed by topic, and only those of interest to the individual need to be read. Some of the services have provisions for these to be read off-line, which, of course, means a savings of those precious on-line minutes.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) SITES Some files are too large to receive by other means, but can be downloaded (transferred to your computer). Archived files can also be available in this way.

GOPHER This highly advanced information retrieval system was created by the University of Minnesota (where the mascot is the gopher) and can be used to tell you what is on another computer. It searches for titles of files that have to do with the subject of your choice, and takes you to the computer containing these files.

WORLD WIDE WEB This is the newest development on the Internet and is an attempt to link information allover the world. "Homepages" are set up by organizations or individuals containing information about themselves, but also containing "pointers" to other sites with related information can be accessed directly by clicking on the phrase or word. New genealogy homepages are being developed rapidly.

Many libraries are now listing their collections, so that you can check from home to see if they have a certain book. The National Genealogical Society. Evertons, and the Library of Congress all can be contacted on-line.

Page 10: Arkansas Family Historian - Arkansas Genealogical Societyomissions, or factual errors is that of the contributor, Manuscript Submissions Submitters of articles and material for possible

Genealogy researchers are very generous in sharing sites that are available on the Internet. Chris Guant and John Fuller have compiled "Genealogy Resources on the Internet" and have made it available for downloading at several sites. They keep it updated approximately quarterly, so each compilation is larger than the last. The October, 1995, listing was 112 pages. One book that can be very helpful is "Genealogy Online: Researching Your Roots" by Elizabeth Powell Crowe, c 1995, published by WindcrestlMcGraw-Hili.

By adding still another bit of hardware - a CD drive - to the computer, more records become available to be used for research at home. Several companies are transferring census records, marriage, birth and death records, pedigrees, wills and land records to this medium. Although the cost for a number of Compact Disks might be prohibitive for an individual, friends often choose and invest together. Local genealogical societies and libraries are also making them available as they can. Many people on the newsgroups and mailing lists offer to look up information on the CDs they own.

Genealogy is the second most popular hobby, but when the information from local libraries and other repositories has been researched, additional research becomes both expensive and time consuming. This new tool, that can be used perhaps just a few minutes at a time, provides another avenue for research. It also provides excitement when you find the person with whom you have just exchanged E-mails lives in the area your family originally settled, or that you are in contact with someone in another country whose interests are similar to yours.

These pages of unsullied white Reminds me of my early life

Signed Lutz Wahl, Brigadier General Acting The Acting Adjutant General.

H M. Graves writing says "it has been a long time since I enlisted and went out from Waldron in said company (George Featherston's) and I don't know of anyone living who was in the company. I remember that Miss Phoebe Featherston presented our flag and told us to go and never let it trail in the dust She stood on the platform of the Court House steps and delivered the flag with a nice appropriate address. I was just a boy of 18 years old then but God in his goodness has extended my life until next 27th of February I will be 82 years old.

___ Richard Nathaniel Wright's Arkansas Connection

Submitted by Izola Preston, 947 Oak Manor Dr., Fayetteville, AR 72703

Richard Wright was born on a plantation near Natchez, Mississippi on September 4, 1908, to Nathan and Ella Wright. Ella Wright taught school in a one-room schoolhouse at Cranfield, MS, before Richard was born. Nathan was part Indian and could not read or write. Nathan Wright, Richard's grandfather, was born a slave in Northwest Adams County. He was given freedom, and a plot of land near Natchez, MS, after the Civil War. Richard's father left home at a very early age and began work as a sharecropper and day laborer. This was before his marriage to Richard's mother.

At a very young age, Richard moved with his parents to Memphis, TN, where his father deserted them. His mother took sick and Richard and his brother were put into an orphanage supported by the Colored Methodist Church.

Richard and his family came to Elaine, AR, and lived with Fred and Maggie Hoskins, Ella's sister. Elaine, AR, is located in Phillips County along the Mississippi River with the land devoted to the raising of cotton, lumbering and sawmills. Fred and Maggie Hoskins, uncle and aunt of Richard, had a saloon that catered to the sawmill and plantation black people. In this area the trees grew large and tall. Cypress, oak and hickory logs were cut and put on wagons pulled by teams of four to eight mules. A spur railroad was opened for the logging business by 1907.

Mr. Fred Hoskins' saloon was doing well and turning a profit. Many of the business people wanted to cut in on this business and asked him to sell below the value ofthe business. He refused (I). These business men threatened to kill Hoskins. (2) The black popUlation of the area was twentythree percent illiterate in comparison to 1.5 percent for whites.

One morning Mr. Hoskins didn't come home. His wife Maggie was afraid to go to see what had happened to him. Later that evening a boy told Mrs. Hoskins that her husband had been shot by a white man and they should get out of town. They moved that night to Helena, AR, about twenty-five miles from Elaine. No one knows what happened to Mr. Hoskins' body. There was no funeral. (3)

Richard had heard of people being. killed in their churches, streets and cotton fields in Elaine. (4) It was also during this time that the Progressive Farmers and Household Union of America was established in Phillips County. The purpose of the Union was to secure economic justice through social and religious action. However, the tenant farmers and laborers asked for changes. The plantation owners thought the Union organizers were the cause of the peoples asking for a change.

Between September 30 and October 4 in 1919, a group of people met at a church in a wooded area called Hoop Spur near Elaine, AR. The people were making plans to secure a fair settlement from their landlords. However, the meeting ended with the deputy sheriff and several other

people being killed. (5) This was called the Elaine Race Riot of 1919,

Meanwhile, Ella and Maggie were so afraid that they stayed in the house in Helena with windows closed. Maggie made a few trips at night to Elaine. The women took jobs in private homes to make ends meet. Richard and his brother were left alone and free to explore the neighborhood,

Soon Maggie met another man named Matthew who had been seeing a white woman. He wanted to break off the relationship, but she said he raped her, (6) Matthews knocked her unconscious, stole some money and set the house on fire, (7)

Matthew and Maggie left Helena the same night The sheriff came looking for them, Meanwhile, it was hard for Ella to pay the rent and feed the children on the money she was making since Maggie had gone to Detroit. (8) She took very sick and her family carried her to Jackson, MS, to her family around 1920,

While in Jackson, Richard took jobs wherever he could find them, In 1924 his first article was published in the Southern Register in three parts called "The Voodoo of He II's Half-Acre." His family was not very happy with the articles,

On May 29, 1925, Richard finished Jackson's Smith-Robertson Public School as the valedictorian. He left Mississippi for Memphis, TN, and worked at various jobs. However, he didn't spend very much time in Memphis before going to Chicago. He joined the Chicago John Reed Club, a literary club, and later became a Communist Party member. He published A Red Love Note and Restfor the Weary,The

Left Front. He published His Strength and Child of the Dead and Forgotten God in ANVIL and I have Seen Black Hands published in NEW MASSES,

He began to work as Ii writer with the Illinois Federal Writers Project in 1935,

Wright left Chicago in 1937 and went to New York City, There he wrote plays and novels and was editor for the Harlem Bureau of the Daily Worker in 1938,

His best work was in 1940 NATIVE SON that became a Book ofthe Month Club selection by Harper and Brothers.

He had married Ellen Poplar in 1941 and in 1946 they sailed to France as guests of the government They lived in the Latin Quarter in Paris on 14 Rue Monsieur Ie Prince, Wright died in the American Hospital in Neuilly on December 3, 1960, at fifty-two years of age. (9)

Thirty two years later, February 9, 1992, on another cold gray covered sky in Paris, at 14 Rue Monsieur Ie Prince, Paris 6, a plaque was placed on the building in honor of Wright Many relatives and friends of Richard Wright gave personal accounts of his life,

Even though Wright left the South to get a better start, his movement carried him for Ii time into Arkansas where he established roots in the state and in its history, He stated in his books that living with his uncle and aunt in Arkansas gave him security which he never had before. With them, he always had enough to eat, where before he was always unsure from whence his next meal would come,

One of the biggest values of these indexes is the ability to look up collateral relatives whose information can lead to clues about direct lines, The information in these books is the same as that on the microfiche sold by Arkansas Genealogical Society, and Desmond also arranged the data for filming to the benefit of AGS. The third volume in the series, 1924-1933, will be available in the, Spring of 1997. Regional volumes of the death indexes are also available. The two state-wide, perfect-bound volumes available now are $49.50 each, plus $3.00 shipping fur the first volume and $1. 00 fur each additional (AR residents must add 4.50/. sales tax). Order from Arkansas Research, PO Box 303, Conway, AR 72033. [BJM]

bound; published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1001 N. Calvert, Baltimore, MD 21202-3879; $19.95 plus $3.50 postage and handling. This revision of the 1965 book Lest We Forget is another of those "don't leave home without it" types. In fact, it is even very useful at home. It details the most important research facilities in the Washington, DC, area, including the National Archives, the Library of Congress, the Bureau of Land Management, and the libraries of the DAR and the National Genealogical Society. Each section details the resources found there and how to access them. There are lists of the materials that have been microfilmed and where those film are available. Forms for ordering copies, etc., are found in the back of the book. There is also a geographic cross reference section, a good bibliography and an index. It is well worth the little over twenty dollar investment. [JBE]

My Family: Johnson, Palmer, Wright. Duncan, by Bessie R, Day, 32552 Riviera Ln., Wilsonville, OR 97070-7441; 274 pages; hard bound; indexed; illustrated; no price information given. While the author claims that this is "not a good genealogy in the true sense of the word," it is chock full of pictures, and other tidbits from her grandmother's scrapbook and a transcription of her diaries. Despite the fact that Ms. Day did not attempt to fill in many of the "blanks," it is a worthwhile addition to the library of anyone connected to these families because of the wealth of source material and the photographs. It has a full name index. For ordering information, contact Ms. Day at the above address. [JBE]

Cowan Connections, by Dr. Michael S. Cole, M.D., 7410 Oxford Place, Fort Smith, AR 72903; 433 pages; hard bound; indexed $50.00. This book details the descendants of Samuel and Sarah (Keith) Cowan, both of whom were born in the I 770s, through the ninth generation and is fairly well documented. If sources are not cited, either date and location are given or the item is clearly identified as family legend. A separate section of the book gives the ancestors of Sarah Keith Cowan, including the surnames Keith, Borden, Fowle, Winter, Cromwell, Butler and Grover, in a narrative style. There is a full name index which, according to the author, contains over 11,000 entries. The book may be ordered from Dr. Cole at the address above, or you may contact him on the Internet at: http://ourworld.Compuserve.Comlhomepa gesiMColeMD/hobby.htm. [JBE]

Our Swedish Ancestors Magnus Germundson and Theadora Andersdotter (Strandberg) by Wadonna Ashcraft (1992), 149 pages, illustrations, maps, charts and a full name index. This attractive and hard bound volume tells the story of a Swedish couple, Magnus Germudson and Theadora Andersdotter, who immigrated from Virestad Parish in Krononberg Lan to the U. S. in 1891 and settled in Hutchinson, KS. They were following in the steps of their children, most of whom came to America in the 1880s. This is a genealogy of a different kind. Besides tracing the ancestors and descendants of these families, the author presents, in well researched and written sections, the history and folk lore of rural Sweden and its bearing upon the lives of folks like the Strandbergs. This book makes good use of illustrative material, copies of

original records, maps and pictures. Of special interest is the section telling why this family, like so many others from Norse countries, had to adopt an official "last name" like Strandberg when they came to North America. This work should be required reading for all Scandinavian family researchers. Other related families are: Benson, Orth, Smith, Eskelsson, Hardin, Peterson and Baumbauer. Unfortunately, it was received without any address or price. [RPB}

Brown-Hon-Stuart-Allison and some Boultinghouses [families} by Marjory Ruth Slater, 88 San Marino Ave., Ventura, CA 93003 (1996). Write her fur a price quote. This large collection of family group sheets and charts include information on a number of early American families who lived in Muhlenberg Co., KY, and Edwards and White counties, lL. Later the families moved to Scott Co., AR and Williamson and Burnet counties, TX. The Hon family was in Scott Co. as early as 1835. If you have ever done Scott Co. research, you will appreciate this material. Each family group sheet is footnoted with sources and observations on the family. This collection contains an almost overwhelming amount of information; however, since it is unbound, lacks a table of contents and is unindexed, it is hard to use as a quick genealogical reference. Nevertheless, the author deserves a gold star for getting her material into print and making it available to other researchers. [RPB]

North Central Oklahoma: Rooted in the Past -Growing for the Future (1995) (2 vols.), hard cover, about 1,000 pages, with a complete name index, $75.25 plus $6.00 postage. Order from North Central Oklahoma Historical Association, P O.

Box 2811, Ponca City, OK 74602. These two beautifully printed books contain gold mines of information about the history and genealogy of Kay County, OK. This county, located on the Arkansas River northwest of Tulsa, was home to the first native Americans, later cowboys, then "Boomers", and last of all, oil men. The land run of 1893 attracted many settlers from Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, and other places. This history is the story of the communities they founded, their businesses, and their churches. It also contains an extensive family history section of some 700 pages plus. All parts are well illustrated, and in an unusual nature for works like this, the history portion is well footnoted. One can tell that a great deal of community pride went into the publication of this work. [RPB]

Our Carter Family in South Carolina and their Neighbors, by Marian C.Ledgerwood, P. O. Box 8081, Hot Springs, AR 71909-8081 (1966), soft cover, 172 pages, fully indexed, with maps. The cost is $25.00. Order from the author. SC is the home of the ancestors of many Arkansas pioneers. For those just beginning genealogical research, Mrs. Ledgerwood's little family history should be on the recommended reading list, especially her excellent footnotes. Much of her work is devoted to a detailed discussion of the life and adventures of one Richard Carter of Laurens County, a Loyalist who fought on the side of the British during the American Revolution, and his family. The author also discussed at considerable length the aftermath of the Revolutionary War in the South and its Loyalist soldiers, especially those in SC and East and West Florida. Other families included are Girth, Bruce, Tuck, Baton, Joyce, Brown, Carrell,

Beatitudes of a Family Genealogist

Blessed are the great -grandfathers, who saved embarkation and citizenship papers, for they tell when they came.

Blessed are the great-grandmothers, who hoarded newspaper clippings and old letters, for they tell the story of their time.

Blessed are the grand-fathers, who filed every legal document, for these provide the proof

Blessed are the grandmothers, who preserved family Bibles and diaries, for these are our heritage.

Blessed are the fathers, who elect officials that answer letters of inquiry, for to some the only link to the past

Blessed are mothers, who wrote family traditions andlegends to the family, for one of her children will surely rmember.

Blessed are relatives, who fill in family sheets with extra data, for to them we owe our family history.

Blessed are the family whose members strive for the preservation of records, for this is a labor of love.

Blesssed are the children, who will never say "Grandma, you have told that old story twice today."
