~63~ u. S. HOUGH FAMILIES in 1880 WITH CHILDREN UNDER 10 YEARS

BY Granville W. Hough

In order to determine educational needs, special arrangements were made in 1880 to determine all U. S. households with children under ten years of age. The special lists which resulted are arrang~ ed by state in what is called the Soundex System. About one~fourth of all families and census entries are recorded in this system. Coun~ ties where the young HOUGHS are found are generally the counties where the single adults and families with older children are also found.

The compilation which follows. shows the family heads by state and county, age, state or county of birth, and earliest known an~ cestor in the U.S. Because of the settlement of the U. S. from East to West, the listings start from the West Coast and work Qack across the U. S. following the immigration paths. Corrected and full information will be given where it is known.

"Tis not the rich, the great, nor the high born, but the combination of all through generations that makes the superior man. All high born are not necessarily of the best, nor because a man is rich or a big general or senator is he necessarily of the best, for though some rough diamonds are of value and though we find fine things in all nature, still the best come of cultivation through generations, and so we wish to find in the study of GENEALOGY the rough diamonds, nature's gems and the cultivated variety and to all give honor."

-80- QUERIES

One of the most frequent requests for help is to obtain a . birth certificate. (or death) These records have been kept (in Arkansas) since Feb. 1914 and may be obtained from Arkansas state Department of Health, Bureau of vital Statistics, 4815 west Markham, Little Rock, Arkansas 72201. Enclose $2.00.

Many people have filed delayed birth certificates and it is often possible to obtain a certificate on a person born well before 1900. This is especially true if they have participated in the Social Security program. Some records are missing after 1914 because a doctor was not present at the birth or death and it was never reported. Forms may be obtained from the above source for filing a delayed birth or death record. If it is not on record with the Bureau of Vital Statistics, there is no way a birth or death certificate can be obtained.

Some substitutes are available for establishing birth and death dates, Old Bible Records, tombstone inscriptions, old newspaper items, and county records. Birth records are not usually foul).d in county records, but the death date is often given in the Probate Records when there is a will or the estate goes into Probate Court. Census records serve to give an approximate year of birth.

The Genealogical Assistance committee will answer all letters enclosing a stamped envelope, giving suggestions on Arkansas material, researchers, etc. They do not offer free research.
