Note: Field upgrades for existing appliances are not supported at this time. Pleasecontact your NetBackup appliance representative for more information.

SAN Client and Fibre Transport support with your applianceThis release of the NetBackup appliance adds SAN Client support. That is aNetBackup optional feature that provides high-speed backups and restores ofNetBackup clients. A SAN client is a special NetBackup client that can back uplarge amounts of data rapidly over a SAN connection rather than a LAN. Thebackup and restore traffic occurs over Fibre Channel, and the NetBackup serverand client administration traffic occurs over the LAN.

For this release, this new feature provides the following benefits:

■ The NetBackup 5200 appliance can now act as Fibre Transport (FT) mediaserver.

■ The SAN Client uses the standard NetBackup target mode driver.

■ All of the hardware and drivers come preinstalled.

■ This feature works with the QLogic 2562 model HBA.

■ You can use the command-line interface tomanage theHBA, aswell as, enableand disable the feature.

■ To use this feature, you only need to connect the ports, configure the requiredzoning, and turn on the feature.

NetBackup Fibre Channel usage with your applianceFibre Transport is the name of the NetBackup high-speed data transport methodthat is part of the SAN Client feature. Fibre Transport uses Fibre Channel and asubset of the SCSI command protocol for data movement over a SAN rather thanTCP/IP over a LAN. It provides a high-performance transportmechanismbetweenNetBackup SAN clients and your NetBackup 5200 appliance. Fibre Transportsupports multiple, concurrent logical connections.

NetBackup Fibre Transport also provides data transport between a NetBackup5200 appliance and aNetBackup 5020 deduplication appliance. You can use FibreTransport for duplication fromyour appliance to aNetBackup 5020 deduplicationappliance. You also can use Fibre Transport for backups to a 5020 deduplicationappliance. In such a use case, your 5200 appliance functions as the backup andrestore server and the 5020 deduplication appliance is the storage host.

Fibre Channel usage for data transfer to and from a NetBackup Deduplicationappliance (5020) appliance v1.3 covers the following scenarios:

13New features and enhancementsAbout the NetBackup Appliance 2.0 software features

■ NetBackupSANclient backupand restore toor fromaNetBackupDeduplicationappliance (5020) appliance v1.3.

■ Optimized duplication from 5200 deduplication pool (such as an MSDP) to aNetBackup Deduplication appliance (5020) appliance v1.3.

■ NetBackup 5200 AdvancedDisk and Tape duplication to a NetBackupDeduplication appliance (5020) appliance v1.3.

About rollback supportAppliances come equippedwith rollback capability after a software release updatehas been installed.

For example, if you upgraded from version 1.1.0.0 to 1.1.0.2, you can roll back toversion 1.1.0.0. In addition, if you upgraded from 1.1.0.1 to 1.1.0.2, then you canroll back to version 1.1.0.1. You cannot, however, rollback to version 1.1.0.0.

Rollback must be performed from the command-line interface.

Rollback functionality is not available for this release of the appliance because itis a major release and built using the NetBackup 7.1.x.x software. If you upgradefrom a 1.1.x.x version of the appliance to 2.0, you cannot rollback to the 1.1.x.xversion.

If you have upgraded to 2.0 and need to return to the previous version, Symantecrecommends that you first back up your current catalog and data. Then contactSupport for assistance on how to reinstall a previous version.

Your appliance now supports SNMPThe NetBackup appliance now supports Simple Network Management Protocol(SNMP). SNMP is an application layer protocol that facilitates the exchange ofmanagement informationbetweennetworkdevices. It is part of theTransmissionControl Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol suite. SNMPenables networkadministrators tomanagenetworkperformance, find and solvenetworkproblems, and plan for network growth.

This feature enables you to generate SNMP traps (or alerts) for hardware failures. And these traps are sent to your existing SNMP server.

About the NetBackup 5200 and 5220 hardwarefeatures

This release introduces the support of a second hardware architecture for theappliance. The NetBackup 5200 Series is comprised of a NetBackup 5200 and a

About NetBackup 7.1.0.1 software featuresThe following list describes the new features that were introduced with theNetBackup7.1 release. Formore detailed information about each of these features, refer to the NetBackup Release Notes document on the Symantec Support Website.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3412

■ NetBackup audit trailWith NetBackup audit trail you can keep a record of user activities in aNetBackupenvironment. With this release, you canauditmanymore categoriesthanwere coveredwithpolicies and restore jobs inNetBackup7.0.1. In addition, you can configure and view audit trails with OpsCenter. This feature enablescustomers to track who made changes, when the changes were made, and thetypes operations were changed in a backup environment.

■ BMR support for Storage Foundation for Windows 5.xWith this feature in NetBackup 7.1 you can recover Windows2003/2008/2008R2 servers whereSFW5.0 or 5.1 are deployed using BMR. Therestore process involves the new improvised Legacy OS-based SRT and notthe Fast Restore or Win PE-based SRT. That is due to the inherent limitationsof SFW running under Windows PE.

■ Embedded Security servicesThis feature embeds the security services (VxAT and VxAZ) into NetBackup.Users no longer need to depend on the shared VxAT and VxAZ infrastructure.

■ Installation and upgrade features

New features and enhancementsAbout NetBackup 7.1.0.1 software features

16

NetBackupLiveUpdatenowsupportsmajor releaseupgrades forNetBackupclients

■ Windows integrated cluster installation and upgrade process is improved

■ New preinstallation checker added to NetBackup for Windows

■ Back-level administration capabilities by the NetBackup-Java consoleNetBackup 7.1.0.1 provides additional ways to perform back-leveladministration of the back-level versions that are compatible. That includesthe packaging and the installation of theNetBackup6.0MP7and6.5.6 versionsof the NetBackup-Java console on compatible UNIX and Linux platforms.

■ Duplication to a remote master server domainWith storage lifecycle policies (SLP) in NetBackup 7.1, you can copy backupimages from one NetBackup master server domain to a target MSDP pool in aremote NetBackup master server domain. This process is called AutomaticImage Replication. If the image arrives at a domain that an appliance masterserver manages, an SLP automatically executes an optimized import processto make that backup image immediately available for restore as well as forfurther SLP duplications. If the image arrives at a domain which a traditionalNetBackup master server manages, an import SLP must be created manually(please see appropriate documentation). That eliminates the complicatedprocesses that involved catalog recovery into remote master servers.

■ Duplication performance improvementsChanges have been made to the write-algorithms that NetBackup uses toimprove the performance of backups and duplications when the images aresmall (less than one gigabyte). Many of these changes are most noticeablewhen multiplexed write operations to physical tape devices are performed.Backups or the write-side of a duplication job are examples of multiplexedwrite operations to physical tape devices.

■ RealTime integration for RedHat LinuxNew in RealTime 7.1 is the ability to protect RedHat 5 Linux hosts. With thatcapability comesNetBackup7.1 integration so thatSnapshotClient canperformInstant Recovery bookmarks of known good points in time on the Linux hosts.RealTime provides crash-consistent, any-point-in-time, recovery.

■ VM Intelligent PolicyInstead ofmanually selectingVMware virtualmachines for backup,NetBackupnow includes a feature to automatically select virtual machines based on arange of criteria. You specify the criteria in the new Query Builder on theNetBackup Policy Clients tab. When a backup is about to occur, NetBackupselects the VMs that match the criteria and launches backup jobs.

About known installation, configuration, and rollbackissues

The following topics contain information about the known issues that relate tothe installation and configuration of the appliance.

■ Your appliance comes with an NFR license key that expires after a specificperiod of time. The appliance does not provide a warning message that thislicense key is about to expire. Thus, Symantec recommends that you changethis key to a permanent key after you install and configure the appliance.See the Symantec NetBackup 5200 Series Appliance Administrator's Guide forinformation and instructions on how to view and change a license key.

■ When you attempt to copy a software update to the share directory, do notinitiate any other commands until the copy finishes. If you run a commandduring the copy process, you may see that the software update listed andavailable, however, if you install that software update, it can fail.To avoid this situation, do not run any other commands until the copy processcompletes.

■ Once you have upgraded your appliance to this release, version 2.0, it is notpossible to rollback to a previous version.

■ An incorrect message shows when you configure the software admin and theSMTP server. When you configure only a software admin email and the SMTP server, anddo not configure a hardware admin email, the following message appears.

Please Add SMTP information in order to

receive email.

The message should state the following:

Please add a hardware admin email to

receive hardware alerts.

If you add a software admin email only, the SMTP server works correctly. However the incorrect message gives the impression that the software adminemail does not work.

About troubleshooting client installationsWhen you install client software on a Windows system, the installation processdisplays an, "Install complete"message. Thismessage appears even if an erroroccurs during the installation. To ensure that the installation completed correctly,

you must look at the script in the installation dialog and verify that a failure didnot occur. If a failure occurs, you can identify the failure by searching for a failureexit code.

About general NetBackup appliance notesThe following list contains the notes that are specific to the NetBackup 5200 and5220 appliances.

■ The Hardware Monitoring page in the appliance user interface does notprovide remote target port information. If you want to view this information, you can use the following command in the appliance shell menu.Main_Menu > Monitor > Hardware all

■ In this release of the NetBackup appliance, the IPSec is not available on theNetBackup 5200 appliances that have been upgraded from a previous release.

■ When you click on the RAID details in the appliance user interface may causean error message to appear as well as the login screen. This issue may only occur after you first install or after you restart yourappliance. If you open the Manage > Disk Storage Web page, and then clickon the RAID details, you may encounter this issue. If you encounter this issue, log in to the appliance again. That should resolvethe issue.

■ If you enable the proxy server with incorrect server information on theHardware Monitoring page, that information gets saved successfully in theappliance user interface. However, the feature is disabled in appliance shellmenu. If you entered the following command from the Settings view, you would seethat the state of the proxy is disabled.Settings> CallHome Proxy Show

■ Whenyouuse theSettings>SMTPServerpage on the applianceuser interfaceto set the notification interval, the field should only except intervals of 15.However, the appliance user interface accepts the values that are not inmultiples of 15. An error should appear is an incorrect interval value is entered.

■ You may encounter an issue if NetBackup cannot communicate with theappliance because the appliance is too busy to respond. The result may causestatus 83 and 84 errors to appear. This issue occurredwhenchanges to theCallHomeor thehardwaremonitoringsettingsweremadewhileNetBackup tried to communicatewith the appliance. To resolve this issue, upgrade the ixgbe driver to version 1.3.0.1b.

21About operational notes and known issuesAbout general NetBackup appliance notes

About a login error message that does not go awayYou may encounter a login error message that states the following, "Please tryafter 5minutes". If you receive this errormessage, and it does not disappear afterfive minutes, then you can use the following procedure to diagnose the issue.

To determine why an error message does not go away after a period of time

1 Open the command-line shell on the appliance.

2 Use the following sequence of commands to navigate to the Processes view.

Main > Support > Processes

3 Enter the following command to review the status of the current processes.

AdminConsole Show

You can see that the Appliance Console Server service is down.

4 Check the following log to determine if a service authentication has failed.

■ If you attempt to configure the network through the shell menu interface(Main_Menu > Network > Configure) and the configuration fails, it is possiblethat the network switch is busy. If that is the case, more time may be neededto negotiate with the appliance.

If the following is true, you can retry the Configure command:

■ The configuration fails with the following error message:ERROR: Interfaces (list of interfaces) are not of same type and

speed.

■ If the Main_Menu > Network > Status command shows the interface speedas Unknown.

■ During the network configuration portion of the initial configuration process, the user interface does not display a progress star on systems with InternetExplorer 8 when the IP change operations occur. The progress star appearswhile the process compiles. In this situation, you must be patient for thenetwork configuration to complete.

■ Unable to disable the NSMP hardware monitoring. The SNMP monitoring feature is enabled by default. If you attempt to disablethe feature fromtheapplianceuser interface, it remains enabled. If youuncheckthe EnableSNMPHardwareMonitoring option and click Save, the followingmessage appears next to the SNMP Server: box.Invalid SNMP server name.

To work around this issue, use the following command from appliance shellmenu to disable the SNMP feature.Main_Menu > Settings > SNMP Disable

About troubleshooting performance degradationThe performance of your appliance can decrease if you perform either of thefollowing functions:

■ If you use the appliance shell menu to set the buffer defaults.

■ If you perform a factory reset, the following tunable buffers are written:

■ SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS

■ SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS_DISK

■ SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS_FT

The scripts that are used to set the buffer defaults from the appliance shell orduring a factory reset write a value a structure that is invalid. BPTM cannot

23About operational notes and known issuesAbout troubleshooting performance degradation

interpret the invalid structure, so it uses only 1KB in its buffers. That causes thebackup speeds to be limited to 2MB per second.

If you encounter this issue, verify that the structure of the data buffer size is inbytes in a decimal format.

About general NetBackup appliance user interfaceissues

The following list contains the notes that are specific to the NetBackup 5200 and5220 appliances.

■ When an appliance master server has an appliance media server configured, the NetBackup-Java Administration Console that is connected to the masterserver may not enable you to perform a backup or restore. If you encounter this issue, perform the followingprocedure fromthe appliancemaster server.

■ Disable all IPv6 entries in /etc/hosts file.

■ Stop the NetBackup and PBX processes.

■ Clear the host cache.

■ Start the network service again.

■ Start the PBX and NetBackup processes again.

■ You can now connect the master server through the NetBackup-JavaAdministration Console.

■ If you enable a proxy server with incorrect proxy server information, theappliance user interface provides the following confirmation:

Call Home Proxy configuration updated successfully.

However, if you verify in the appliance shell menu, you may see that thisfeature is disabled. To avoid this situation, make sure that you provide valid proxy serverinformationwhen you use the appliance user interface. In addition, you ca usethe appliance shell menu to verify whether the feature is enabled.

■ After you have completed the initial configuration, the ClickHere redirectionlink in the appliance user interface points to /opscenter. It should point to/appliance. In this scenario the page loads correctly, however the URL isinconsistent from the other URLs within appliance user interface.

About operational notes and known issuesAbout general NetBackup appliance user interface issues

24

If you do not provide DNS information during the initial configuration, andyou only provide an /etc/hosts entry, you may notice that the URL ismalformed for the Clickhere to reconnect link after the role configuration iscomplete. That causes the page to not load.If you encounter this issue, manually type theURL in the browser and proceed.

■ If you use the appliance shell menu to add a proxy server for the Call Homefeature, and then view the Hardware Monitoring page in the appliance userinterface, the server name is not visible. Only the port and the state fieldsappear correctly. To view the proxy server name, use the appliance shell menu.

If you attempt to decommission a media server appliance that is configuredto a NetBackup appliance master server in classic mode the attempt may fail.If a failure occurs, the following message is logged.

Server is a member of the following media sharing groups:

UNRESTRICTED_SHARING_GROUP unable to get list of policies.

This failure can occur because the NetBackup master server does not have apolicy defined. To avoid this issue, make sure that you define at least one policyon the master server.

■ The decommission processmaynot remove all of the require objects and causean error. After you have gone through the process decommissioning a media server, the disk pool and storage server objects of type PureDisk are not removed. Ifyou run FactoryReset on themedia server, configure it as amedia server andattempt to use it for backups and restores. You must use the NetBackupAdministration Console from the NetBackup master server to remove theseobjects.See the section, "Decommissioning amedia server", in theSymantecNetBackupAdministratorGuide ,Volume I formore information onhow to decommissiona NetBackup media server. You can also refer to the following Technote on the Symantec Support Website:http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH31168
