Chapter 2
Introduction
The NetBackup 5220 is an integrated backup device with high-density and high-performance. It consists of the backup device, backup software, and backup media. The NetBackup 5220 fulfills the unified management of the software and hardware, which reduces operations and maintenance cost, and minimizes the total cost of ownership (TCO). The base configuration supports 4.5 TB of formatted RAID storage (base 2).
The Symantec Storage Shelf functions as a disk expansion device when used with the NetBackup 5220, in two configurations. The unit can increase the storage capacity to 36 TB (base 2) with thirteen 3 TB drives or to 24 TB (base 2) with thirteen 2 TB drives. Only one Symantec Storage Shelf can be used with a NetBackup 5220.

Disk modules and drives The NetBackup 5220 contains eight disk bays. Each bay holds one disk module, which includes a disk carrier and a disk drive. The bays must never be empty, to maintain air flow. A blank carrier may be used if necessary.
Physical view The front panel of the NetBackup 5220 system supports 8 hot-swappable 2.5” form factor disk drives. The drives are labeled 0 through 7, from left to right. Slot #7 is reserved for the spare disk.
The NetBackup 5220 also contains two non hot-swappable boot drives, located in the drive tray next to the control panel.
The Symantec Storage Shelf disk module contains a 3.5” form factor SAS drive.

40 Introduction
Hardware structure
Disk drive features The disk drives have the following features:
The OS of the NetBackup 5220 is installed on system disks that are not hot-swappable.
The disk in slot 7 of the drive is designated as the spare disk. If a disk in slot 0 through 6 fails or is removed, the spare disk contains backed up data.
Provide storage capacity The NetBackup 5220 can provide storage capacity for storing other data besides the system data on the system disks. Except for the system disks and hot spare disks, all other disks are data disks and provide storage capacity.
When data is being read or written on disks, do not power off the device by turning off the power. Otherwise, the disks data may be damaged. To power off the device correctly, stop reading and writing data on the disks first. Then send a shutdown command through the OS.
Disk module LEDs One disk inside a carrier defines the “Disk Module.” There are two LEDs on each disk module. One LED indicates disk status. The other LED indicates Power and/or Activity.

NetBackup 5220 power modules
Features The rear panel of the NetBackup 5220 contains two power modules, one situated on top of the other. Each module has one AC power connector (socket) and an LED status indicator.
The power modules support hot swapping. A fault on one power module does not affect the normal running of the NetBackup 5220.
It is recommended to have both power modules attached to the main AC power source. If one module or source fails, the other module maintains power to the system without interruption.

Non-Hot-swappable components (FRUs) The following components are field-replaceable units (FRUs). For the safety of personnel, equipment and data you must perform a full OS-driven shutdown of the equipment before working inside the chassis of the NetBackup 5220. Unplug all power sources and peripherals before removing the device from the rack. Review all applicable safety guidelines. The device must be properly removed from the rack and placed on a solid electrostatic-preventive surface before opening the chassis.

Software structure
Software structure The NetBackup 5220 is preloaded with software programs. Customers can purchase license keys to enable the software. A USB drive is provided as backup in case recovery of programs is required.
Monitoring interfaces There are several monitoring systems to obtain data regarding your device. Included are:
The NetBackup 5220 administrative Web UI for local administration of the network, internal disk storage, and tape libraries. If you configure the appliance as a master server, you can use the interface to manage backup policies, storage lifecycle policies, and storage units. The Web UI provides overall system and individual disk information.
Refer to the NetBackup 5200 Series Administrator’s Guide for details.
CLI options in the NetBackup 5220 appliance shell menu to access the same system and individual disk information found in the administrative Web UI. Log in with SSH tools from your Windows PC. You can use the Support > Logs commands to collect log information to use when troubleshooting.
Refer to the NetBackup 5200 Series Command Reference Guide for details.
The RAID CLI is accessed via ssh to obtain detailed information about:
8 hot-swappable disk drives in the NetBackup 5220
2 non-hot-swappable disk drives internal to the NetBackup 5220
16 disk drives in the Symantec Storage Shelf
Refer to the RAID CLI section of the NetBackup 5220 Software Troubleshooting Guide for instructions and sample commands.
The Remote Module Management 3 (RMM3) web-based system provides remote access. It is an alternative method to access the NetBackup 5220 appliance shell menu if ssh capability is unavailable. RMM3.
Refer to the RMM3 section of the NetBackup 5220 Software Troubleshooting Guide for more information.
