STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

Kyogle High School SRC is up and running with lots of enthusiasm for 2021! The Student Representative Council exists to provide opportunities for students to address the interests and concerns of students and to develop leadership skills. KHS has representatives from each year group and the council is as follows: SRC 2021 President: Ben Field Vice president: Ciska Laarhoven Secretary: Georgia Duley and Nikoa Endres Treasurer: Felicity Duley and Nate Walters Media personnel: Tyvan Catford and Kody Tobler Researcher personnel: Georgia Thomas Council members: Hayley Butler, Mitchell Cannington, Olivia Flower, Faryn Johnston, Mikayla Sneath, Tom Moorhouse, Larrah O’Reilly, Rebecca-Star Pazos, Charlotte Whitehouse. DEPUTY PRINCIPALS REPORT

Welcome to this issue of the KHS newsletter. Congratulations to all students, parents and carers who have engaged with our school uniform and ensured at all times our students are proudly wearing uniform. It has been especially pleasing to see our school in uniform from the stage during assembly. Wearing uniform is both a measure ensuring student safety and a sign a student respect for their school. That is 2 of our 3 of our Positive Behaviour for Learning expectations being actively supported. I encourage students, parents and carers to continue to invest in wearing uniform and maintaining a safe and respectful position throughout 2021, especially as our weather turns cooler and on wet days. KHS uniform expectations are:

Most excursions (sporting, cultural, and educational) require school uniform to be worn, again as a safety and respect measure. Students not wearing uniform on an excursion MAY BE prevented from attending the excursion. The following clothing is not considered uniform and is not approved for wearing at KHS: exercise tights, extra short shorts and football shorts, tops and jumpers. Clothing and caps with bold emblems, slogans and motifs are also discouraged. Substantial and appropriate footwear is also required. Students who cannot wear school uniform due to an unavoidable situation are required to bring a note of explanation from home on the day and hand this to the Front Office and receive an Out of Uniform Pass for the day. Students should dress in clothes that are similar in appearance to school uniform. This should only occur on rare occasions and should not be a regular occurrence.

Let our uniform in 2021 continue to distinguish our students as safe and respectful learners at KHS.

Regards—David Hanley— DP

PRINCIPALS REPORT

Year 7 Coffs Coast Adventure Camp The eagerly anticipated Year 7 Camp happens next week. This is a fantastic opportunity for team building and creating strong unity among the group. A huge thank you to Mr O’Meara for the preparation to ensure this will be a memorable event for all the students.

P&C It was great to meet with the P&C at the school after such a prolonged period of not being able to meet face to face. The next meeting on Wednesday 28 April is the AGM so I encourage as many parents to come along and be an active member.

Strategic Improvement Plan (SiP) As a school we have been continuing to work around our strategic improvement plan 2021-2024. Our three broad directions are Student Growth and Attainment, Teaching, Leading & Learning, and Equity Focused. Within this plan there is a strong focus on collaboration, literacy and numeracy, a culture of high expectations, effective classroom practice and effective feedback. At the last two P&C meetings I have discussed aspects of the plan and I thank the parents who are providing feedback on the readability of the plan from a parent perspective.

Parent Teacher Afternoon With the relaxing of some restrictions for schools we are holding a Parent/Teacher Afternoon for Year 7 on Tuesday 23 March 4-6pm. To adhere to Covid guidelines we will have each ‘faculty’ in classrooms and parents will be directed where to wait. All parents must sign in using the QR code and sanitiser and wipes will be made available. I hope we get to meet many of our Year 7 parents.

Mobile Phones Mobiles for the most part are used by students within our guidelines (switched off/on silent and out of sight during class). There are however a few students who use the phones in class which distracts from the teaching and learning process. If any student uses their phone in class or even has it out, they are initially warned to put it away, if they don ’t it is confiscated for the day. If a student has their phone confiscated three times, a parents must come to school to collect it. Please remind your student of these very simple guidelines that ensure that we have a productive learning environment. Have a great fortnight. Gae Masters—Principal

Come and meet and join our vibrant P&C group. We warmly welcome everyone in the school community, especially new families. KHS P&C is a great way to get involved with the school and to connect with other families. Light refreshments will be served!

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

PDHPE

Students across the school have been testing their fitness levels in various PDHPE classes. The junior school in core PDHPE and the senior students in PDHPE and SLR. Fitness testing is a great way to monitor and assess students' ability as it relates to aerobic fitness, strength, and flexibility. It can also help students understand how healthy they are and learn to set goals to improve their health-related fitness.

YEAR 7 TRANSITION

This week we had a visit from ‘The Truth Project’, which is designed to empower senior high school students to create their own version of success. It is a one-day interactive workshop for Year 10, 11 and 12 students that aims to enhance their knowledge and encourage a more positive post-school journey.

Mrs Riesinger - Careers Advisor

THE TRUTH PROJECT

Year 7 Respectful Behaviour Year 7 students are settling into Kyogle High with very few students becoming lost or unable to read their timetables. Students are improving at working in classes and meeting the Positive Behaviour for Learning. A focus in Year 7 classes this Term at KHS has been ‘Being Respectful’.

To improve across our Year 7 classes all students need to follow our simple rules to ensure each student in class has an opportunity to learn. Respectful behaviour in our classes limits class disruptions and allows our teaching staff to give attention to students who need extra support. At Kyogle High we aim to have quality classrooms with engaging lessons each period so our students enjoy learning and attending school.

Each Term we are also aiming for each student to maintain high levels of attendance. Students learning is affected by attendance and we require parents/carers to notify the school regarding absences. We have rewards for maintaining high attendance at Kyogle High and encourage students to always explain their absences with a letter/phone call from their parent/carer. Mr O’Meara - Year Advisor

STAGE 5 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY - INDUSTRIAL
