Assistant Principal’s Message Teacher Planning Week (19th – 23rd March) What happens during this week?

In week eight of this term a day has been allocated to the levels and specialist teams to begin the collaborative planning of the teaching and learning for the next term. Creating a culture of working collaboratively to continuously improve teaching and learning is at the heart of the work that we do on these days. Leaders and staff are unified and committed to achieving the highest possible learning goals for all students. Curriculum planning, assessment and feedback are driven by a deep knowledge of the curriculum and a deep knowledge of students’ progress and achievement developed through use of high-quality Common Assessment Tasks and rigorous moderation processes. It is a significant undertaking by the school both logistically and financially to facilitate a time such as this, for teachers to engage in a collaborative exercise. On the day that teams are planning, the classroom program continues with the support of the specialists and casual relief teachers. The class teachers will talk to the children about this and prepare them for what to expect on their level planning day. Changes to Absenteeism Reporting Policy

In the newsletter dated 23rd Feb the school provided information regarding the changes to absenteeism reporting policy. We would like to now inform all families that this new reporting system will being starting Monday 19th March. As with all new changes there may at times be some bumps along the road, please be mindful of this and thank you for being patient. We would like to hear of any issues that people have with this new system to help us make this change as smooth as possible. (Previous information provided Feb 23rd) A review of the Attendance Guidelines for schools was undertaken in Term 4, 2017. During the January school holidays Minister for Education James Merlino announced changes to the School Attendance Guidelines, these require government schools notify parents of unexplained student absence as soon as practicable on the day of absence. Prior to the announcement, government schools were advised to attempt to make contact with the parent within three days of an unexplained student absence. The review and resulting changes to the guidelines will help ensure the safety of school-aged children during school hours. To meet the new requirements Kingsville will be notifying parents soon after 10.00a.m. each morning on a daily basis by email and text message with the following message: {student.name} has been marked absent without explanation as of 10.00a.m. If you require more info, please contact the school or log into parent portal.

To record a reason for an absentee:

log onto the parent portal on Compass

from the Compass home screen (or from your student’s profile), click the ‘Add Parent Approval’ item

from the pop-up window, select the reason, enter a brief description of the absence, select the start and finish time

click the ‘Save’ button. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone or email to provide reason for an absence. Digital Parenting and Cyber Safety Presentation “Hello Chris are you hearing us?” Last week as part of their unit of inquiry, grade 6 students and teachers spoke to Chris Hadfield, the famous Canadian astronaut. This was a fantastic experience and it was all due to technology, because Chris was in Canada while talking to our students. This is just one example of the ways schools are using technology to engage in learning experiences that otherwise would not be possible. The benefits of technology are extensive but along with these benefits educating students about being safe while using this technology is a high priority. Yesterday, Thursday 15th March, Martine Oglethorp, from the Modern Parent Organisation completed a series workshops with students in the grade 5 and 6 level, Kingsville staff as well as 40 parents and community members in an evening session. These workshops complement the work that the school has done and continues to do around the ESmart practices. Safe and responsible use of technology is naturally part of the new Victorian Curriculum, and the school has a special focus on establishing expectations around how we use technology when classes are setting up their routines and practices, including acceptable use agreements, cyber safety lessons and academic honesty. Yesterday’s workshops focused on keeping safe online as well as how students can make the best choices to ensure they are minimising the risks, whilst taking advantage of the many benefits of the online world. Issues from cyber safety, privacy and teaching students crucial digital literacy and resilience skills were covered. Students examined online conversations where things have gone wrong, and thus give them the language to come up with better responses, actions and words to ensure a better outcome.

Peter Ritchie, Assistant Principal/PYP coordinator Easter Hamper Raffle Please see the Easter Hamper Raffle reminder item by Zoanne Morrissy on behalf the FOKPS in this newsletter. I would like to thank families who have contributed items for the raffle so far however, we are hoping for many more contributions. The number of Easter Hamper prizes in past years has been high and in 2018 we hope to have 20 beautiful baskets on offer. As Zoanne has put it they will be EGG-STRAORDINARY Time however is running out and so far we have around 40 items - only enough for around 5 or 6 baskets. The raffle is being drawn on Friday 23rd March the end of the second last week of Term. This is to ensure that prize winners have time to get their baskets home before the term break. So get hoping and get shopping this weekend and I am confident we can increase the number very quickly. Please also do not forget to purchase your raffle tickets Donations for the hampers must be in by next Tuesday 20th March to ensure time for volunteers to put everything together for the draw on Friday 23rd March

Easter Hat Parade I would hope that the KPS millinery efforts are well and truly under construction. However, a check of Year 3 – 6 students at Friday assembly today revealed a significant number of children who had great ideas about their Easter hats but, had not yet finished them. So please read full details regarding this in newsletter No 4 – 23rd February 2018 and lets look forward to another Easter hat parade Kath Ginnane Principal

Student Action "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." (Margaret Mead) Student action can take many forms as it grows out of inquiry and understanding. Action involves going below the surface of the understanding. Action allows the learner to develop complex understandings about power and human rights, social justice and change and the feeling that their personal actions have the abilities to create a better world. Action is a significant piece of the puzzle in creating an internationally minded person and can take many forms: Direct - Person-to-person service, e.g. tutoring or working with elderly Indirect - Projects that benefit a community, e.g. environmental awareness, construction, restoration, food drives. Advocacy - Write, speak, lobby, or act to create awareness about issues in the community. Research - Finding gathering and reporting information. Oscar in grade 34S is taking advocacy action by raising awareness about the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Oscar was born with multiple major congenital cardiac defects and to date has had 10 surgeries, including 3 open

heart surgeries and spent many, many months at the Royal Children's Hospital.

This weekend he is again participating with his family in the Run 4 The Kids and Oscar has decided to also shave his hair, which he hasn't cut for more than 3 years, to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital. Oscar is also donating his hair to Variety's 'Hair with Heart' program to make a wig for a child or adolescent who has lost their hair due to illness or disease.

If you would like to sponsor his shave you can donate securely via his Everyday Hero fundraising page:

Stay tuned for a post shave photo ...

National Ride2School Day 2018 This coming Friday, the 23rd March, is National Ride2School day. As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, the Kingsville Primary School community really embraces this event. Last year, in fact, over 95% of students made their way to school either on feet or on wheels. After reflecting on the successes of last year, and considering feedback from the community (parents, students and teachers), we’ve made the following arrangements in working to ensure this event runs as smoothly as possible for the arrival of students and the storage of their wheeled modes of transport:

Students from Foundation – Grade 2 are encouraged to arrive via the Somerville Road gate, and store their bikes or scooters in the racks next to the Foundation classrooms, as well as in the gated area behind Tracey and Susan’s rooms.

Students from Grades 3 & 4 are encouraged to arrive via Julian Street, and will store their bikes or scooters in the concreted area next to the rear car park. Provisions are in place to ensure all bikes have a space on the day.

Students from Grade 5 are encouraged to arrive via the double gates on Bishop Street, and will store their bikes or scooters in the gated area next to the Staffroom. Again provisions are in place to ensure there is enough space for all bikes and/or scooters.

Students from Grade 6 are encouraged to arrive via the double gates on Bishop Street, and will store their bikes or scooters in the racks behind the BER.

We understand that for some students it is more convenient to arrive via Cruickshank Park, and, with this in mind, the double gates behind the oval will be opened. There will be members of staff to help direct traffic around the school from 8.30am onwards. Once students have arrived and parked their bike, they’re encouraged to come to the quiet play area, where they can receive their official Ride2School sticker. We also wish to remind all students and parents that once inside the school grounds it’s important that all bikes and scooters are dismounted from and walked to the appropriate area. If there are any questions, or any members of the community who are able to provide some assistance on the morning, feel free to contact me at [email protected].
