STEM Sparks

Over the last decade education has focused on application andconcept based learning, but the skills needed for future jobs arechanging.

Future Generation

Within the next 15 years, it is expected that 40% of jobs will be lostto automation – STEM Sparks is a group of STEM enthusiasts whoseek to bridge the skill gap and prepare the future generationthrough our exciting and creative STEM workshops and after schoolSTEM clubs.

Love of Learning

Our hope is to promote the love of learning and prepare children forthe future by utilising exciting creative paths to explore.

Developing Skills

At STEM Sparks we seek to develop children’s confidence,curiosity for learning and developing their skills and values. Ourexperiences bring into play these essential skills.

Global Citizenship

Global citizenship, being one of the core values within ourlearning experiences, promotes all persons having rights and civicresponsibilities that come along with being a member of the world.For us at STEM Sparks this encompasses ‘humanity’ for livingorganisms, and respect for the environment, our home and motherearth.

Ooeey Gooey Experiments

Experiments that demonstrate the properties of polymers

STEM Sparks loves to include hands on SLIME science in our workshops

We explore the science behind slime, including mixtures, substances, polymers, crosslinking, states of matter, non - Newtonian fluids, elasticity, viscosity and nature’spurpose of slime.

Like any scientific activity, safety needs to be the priority; our slime investigation usessafe toxin free ingredients, so the kids get dug in!

Designing a slime scientific method – students will go through all safety expectationsand make their own slime lab report – including a hypothesis, aim, materials andmethods, risk assessment, discussion and conclusions section

Students will carry out the investigation, making their own slime and adding glitters andfood dyes to decorate, whilst trying to answer all questions they designed in week 1.

Oobleck experiment- students will make up some Ooeey Gooey Oobleck and compare itto the properties of the slime they made previously.

GobbledyGoop experiments

Children explore temperature and itseffects on GobbledyGoop, and theviscosity of GobbledyGoop.

Slippery spheres, silly squares and jellystone experiment alongside slime innature – children will have access to ipadsfor looking at nature’s purpose of slime.

3D PrintingAllow your pupils to access 3D printing - a growing and importanttechnology for the future. Our workshop safely incorporates 3D printing pens tocreate an ideal learning and creative 3D Model Making experience.

Engineering Challenge

Pairs of students will use the 3Doodler to build the tallest structure in the class. Inaddition to the 3Doodler, students will be given either toothpicks or straws asconstruction materials. The 3Doodler will be used to adhere the building materialstogether. Students will use higher-level thinking skills to make predictions in orderto form a hypothesis, record materials, observations, results, and analysestructures to determine the key to building the tallest tower.

Buoyancy challenge

Students will work in pairs to explore thebuoyancy of water with boats that they'vedesigned and created using a 3Doodlerand other materials. Students will test outtheir boats in the water to see which onecan float the longest.

Bubble trouble

Bubbles are everywhere," according toMathematician, Frank Morgan, whodiscovered the "Double Bubble"conjecture. In this experiment, studentswill engineer a new design for 3 uniquebubble wands, as well as alter the bubblemixture in order to determine how shape,surface area and pressure relate to thescience of bubbles.

Doodle Maze

In this activity, students will work in pairsto design their own 3Doodler MarbleMaze using an online interactive mazetool. Students will incorporate elementsof maze design including diversions intotheir mazes and then play them using atiny tin foil ball as the marble.

Robot Building and programmingwith Lego Wedo 2.0

STEM Sparks use exciting Robotic Technology for the acquisition ofSTEM skills such as Science, Engineering, Programmingknowledge, and coding.

We promote playful-experimenting to develop STEM practices andprovide exciting opportunities for pupils to work and develop ideasand knowledge as well as an understanding of the world aroundthem.

Robot Coding with Ozobots

At STEM Sparks we aim to get kids coding and loving robots; Ozobotshelp to do this by using both technology and coloured markers.

Our sessions will introduce students to programming and computationalthinking and explains what kind of robot Ozobot is.

Students will learn how the robot works and then give commands toOzobot using OzoCodes, which are special colour sequences. Weincorporate both paper and iPad coding challenges and use theIpad to program Ozobot so they can control its every move.

Students will advance their codingand programming skills week byweek to become expert coders.

Tablet building with Stem Sparks allows students to handle all ofthe parts and connect all of the cables to bring a fully functionaltablet to life.

They will discover how a computer works by learning about pixels,processors and binary. The secrets of how a touch screen works,tap, drag, swipe and learn.

With our expertise, pupils will learn how to make art, music,games, code pictures, and build animations. The fun innovationjust doesn’t stop. They can take control of Minecraft, pong andsnake.

Electric Motors

Students will discover the useselectric motors and create their ownelectric motors. Students will createtwo types of homopolar motors andcarry out races with their creations.

Magic Magnetism

STEM Sparks will help students explore magnetism, we will digdeep to understand magnetic materials, magnetic fields,electromagnets and electric motors.

Mysterious Magnets

Students will plot magneticfield Lines using a plottingcompass, learn what makes amagnet a magnet, and maketheir own magnet.

Exciting Electromagnets

Students will make their ownelectromagnet, test its strength anddiscover the everyday uses ofelectromagnets.

Ferrofluid

Students will explore magneticand non-magnetic materials andtest out some magnetic liquid.

UP

In this activity, pupils investigatewhether it is possible to make ahouse fly with helium balloons.

Pupils explore how much weight asingle helium balloon can lift, andwhether enough balloons could lift awhole house.

Fact Finding

The Gingerbread Man

In this activity, pupils look back at the story of TheGingerbread Man and test the story with science.

Pupils try to decide if the gingerbread man would have beenable to escape the fox and swim to safety.

They also explore the properties of different materials inwater and consider the best material for creating a waterproofoutfit.

Microwave Myth-busting

Pupils test the internet myth of whethermicrowaved water is bad for plants.

Pupils explore the effects, that different typesof water might have, on growing plants.

Mentos and Coke

In this activity, pupils test some of themyths surrounding cola drinks.

Pupils undertake three explorationsaround the properties of cola drinks.

Marvellous Machines

In this activity, pupils exploresimple machines and make achain of several Heath Robinsonstyle machines, each setting offthe next.

QR Hunt

In this challenge, students will learn all about QR codes, their anatomy andfunction, how they differ from bar-codes, and what their benefits are.

They will be shown how to read and write the hexadecimal numeral systemand what it is used for.

Pupils will use QR codes for an educational information hunt and learn howto translate the data they receive using hexadecimal.

They will also learn how to create their own QR codes.

BBC Micro:bitProgrammable computer

Micro:bit is a tiny programmable computer,designed to make learning computationalprogramming fun.

Our Micro:bit projects teach students about thecomponents that make up the micro:bit and how tocreate various programs using javascript Blockeditor to give the micro:bit different uses.

For example: temperature reader, fruit keyboard,guitar, step counter, dice, combination lock,countdown timer and many more.

ScratchWith Scratch, Students can program theirown interactive stories, games, animationsand share creations with others in the onlinecommunity. As students work on Scratchprojects, they also learn about the processof design.

Typically, a student will start with an idea,create a working prototype, experiment withit, debug it when things go wrong, getfeedback from others, then revise andredesign it.

The ability to code computer programs is animportant part of literacy in today’s society.When people learn to code in Scratch, theylearn important strategies for solvingproblems, designing projects, and learnmathematical and computational ideas suchas iteration and conditionals.

They also gain an understandingof important mathematicalconcepts including coordinates,variables, and random numbers.

Game and Animation Design

Students will become writers, artists, designers,and developers of their own digital stories.

Using iPads and game boards students will havethe power to create video games in theclassroom. From game layout to characterdesigns, they can customise everything – whateach element looks like and how elementsinteract with each other.

Students can also build interactive storieswithin their games, they can use story blocks totell narratives, build logic puzzles with actionblocks and transform their character withpower- ups.

Building an entire video game from scratchunlocks student’s creativity, and advances theirprogramming skills, special awareness, logic,problem solving and collaboration skills.

Roblox Education

Roblox is an educational tool whereby the opportunities for creativity andimagination are limitless.

Our Roblox lessons are built to meet specific learning outcomes in STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) classrooms andcurriculum standards, such as ISTE. The Roblox studio tools allow students tobuild 3D worlds, recreate ancient cities, script games, code puzzles andquests, tell stories and even publish their work online.

Tornado Tube

Making water bottles andexplain the science behindhow a tornado functions.

Elephant’s Toothpaste

Students will safely mix uptheir own foaming elephantstooth paste.

Rockets

Students will design andlaunch their own types ofrockets.

Wacky ScienceStudents will get to experience some fun and excitinginteractive science experiments, these include:

Solids, Liquids, Gases and Dry Ice

Students will carry out various experiments around states of matterand finish with sublimation using dry ice.

Dragon’s Den ChallengeStudents will be challenged to become budding inventors focusing on thetheme sustainability. Pupils will have time to invent something that will help 'save the planet ', pitch their idea, demonstrate their product and answerquestions from the panel.

Week 1: Students will be briefed on the given task and given examples ofcurrent topical issues from extreme weather, melting icecaps, speciesextinction, sea pollution, recycling etc. and a planning sheet. They will be putinto groups, carry out research and brainstorm ideas.

Week 2: Students will discuss ideas with us, be given tips and suggestions onhow to make their invention prototype. They will choose materials and designan inventor’s method.

Weeks 3 and 4: Students will spend time engineering and testing theirinvention.

Week 5: Students will create a 2-minute presentation on PowerPoint to pitchtheir idea.

Week 6: Students will pitch their ideas and receive feedback; the mostinnovative inventors will receive a Stem Sparks Dragon’s Den trophy.
