Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

“All the bridesmaids got up and got their lamps ready. The

foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for

our lamps are going out.’ But the wise ones replied, ‘No, for

there may not be enough to go around. Go buy your own

…” [Matthew 25:7-9]

As a child I always thought this was quite unfair and un-

kind. Why didn’t the bridesmaids share their oil? Then one

day someone told me that there are somethings that each per-

son must do for themselves that no one else can do for them

in order to find the Spirit of God. That is what the oil signi-

fies, the wisdom of God within our hearts. The wise young

women’s oil symbolized their store of experience of living

the Gospel. Their discipleship prepared them to enjoy the

party that was to come.

Living the Gospel is not like hoarding oil or packing a

backpack. It’s more like riding a bike, learning a new lan-

guage or being generous. You practice it until it comes natu-

rally. For the foolish to beg “lend us some of your oil of

preparation” was as silly as saying “Give me a bit of your

balance so that I can ride this bike.” There are some things

only you can do for yourself. Only you can say your own

prayers. Only you can eat your vegetables. Only you can take

your exercise or choose not to drink to excess. Only you can

develop the habit of visiting the sick, or forgiving those who

hurt you. Only you can do just deeds and faithful witnessing

to “let your little light shine.”

Questions for the week: What am I doing to continue my

own faith-formation? How do I practice the gifts and fruits

of the Holy Spirit in order to find that oil that no one else can

give?

Domingo Treinta y Dos en el Tiempo Ordinario

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

Word from Pope Francis:

Dear brothers and sisters, may looking at the Last Judgement never frighten us: rather, may it impel us to live the present better. God offers us this time with mercy and pa-tience so that we may learn every day to rec-ognize him in the poor and lowly. Let us strive for goodness and be watchful in prayer and in love. May the Lord, at the end of our life and at the end of history, be able to recognize us as good and faithful servants.
