Pope Francis:

“War, greed, consumerism, ‘cult of appear-ance’ harm families”

Families are weakened and destroyed by war, “the mother of all forms of poverty,” as well as by economies and policies that worship money and power, Pope Francis said recently. “It’s almost a miracle” that, even in poverty and crisis, the family can keep on going, safeguarding its bonds and staying intact, he said. The pope began by focusing on the hardship of poverty, which is further aggravated by war. “War is always something terrible,” he said, as it is “a great pred-ator of lives, of souls and the most sacred and dearest of attachments.” But despite such difficulties, many poor families are able to live “with dignity, seeking to live their daily life” and placing their trust in God, the pope said. Healthy families are the “mainstay” of healthy individuals and communities, he said, so if that cornerstone is removed, “everything collapses.” “Today’s economy often specializes in the enjoyment of individu-al well-being, but widely practices the exploitation of family relation-ships. This is a serious contradiction,” he said, criticizing economic and political experts as being “stingy” in not recognizing or including the “enormous work of the family” in their analyses and balance sheets. Fighting poverty is not just a matter of families getting “bread” on the table, the pope said, it is about having jobs, stable employment, education, health care, housing and transportation. The conditions found in poor neighborhoods and “the reduction of social services—health care and schooling—cause further difficul-ties” for families, he said. Spread by the mass media, “fake models” of the family based on “consumerism and the cult of appearance” also harm families, he said, and have a greater impact on poorer families and increase the break-down of family ties. The church and its members are called to heal families and fight poverty, he said. By becoming “poor” and practicing simplicity, the pope said, the Church can break down “every wall of separation, especially from the poor” and become more effective in responding to poverty. Pope Francis called on Christian families to pray and act on behalf of those in need, and “join this revolution” of drawing near to families, “which is so needed now.” He asked those gathered to think of a disadvantaged family they knew as he reread a passage from the Book of Sirach (4:1-6). The verses tell people not to mock, anger or reject the poor, but to relieve them of their burdens. The poor will be the first to judge those who ignore their cries, he said, followed by God’s judgment and curse “if we don’t do these things” commanded in the Gospel.

Prayer For Our Country Almighty God,

bless our nation and make it true to the ideals of freedom and justice

and brotherhood for all who make it great.

Guard us from war, from fire and wind, from compromise, fear, confusion.

Be close to our president and our statesmen;

give them vision and courage, as they ponder decisions affecting peace

and the future of the world.

Make me more deeply aware of my heritage; realizing not only my rights

but also my duties and responsibilities as a citizen.

Make this great land and all its people know clearly Your will,

that they may fulfill the destiny ordained for us in the salvation of the nations,

and the restoring of all things in Christ. Amen.

Joke of the Week On my grandfather’s first day of boot camp, his drill sergeant brought the unit to attention and asked, “Is anyone here musi-cally inclined?” Seeing an easy job in the offing, three soldiers, including Grandpa, raised their hands. “Good,” said the ser-geant. “you three will move the commander’s piano.”

Parish School of Religion

Dear Parishioners, registration for the Parish School of Religion for next year, 2016-2017 is underway. New students may obtain a Registration Packet from the Parish Office, the Religious Education Office, or from our website at www.borromeoparish.com and select-ing Religious Education. Families are encouraged to return registration materials before August 1, 2016 so we can be sure and have all necessary materials and classes in place! Parents of students desiring a sacrament: Reconciliation, First Communion, or Confirmation are reminded that students must participate in one full year of formal Reli-gious Education prior to the Sacrament. Our PSR program is dependent on parish volunteers, young, old and in between for catechists, table leaders, classroom helpers, parents who do tasks at home, door monitors, and parents to make our religious classes filled with the love and peace of Jesus for our young children. If you are feeling called to help in any way in our program, please don’t hesitate! Sharing your love of Jesus makes a big difference in the faith life of our children and their families.

…cortesía de St. Charles Borromeo: 200 Years of Faith, por Jo Ann Brown. The St. Charles Borromeo Journey

1915 *** 1916

Throughout July 1915, volunteers and paid laborers continued to clear the devastation left by the tornado that once was the parish church. The Married Ladies Sodality swept and dusted the school hall for use as a temporary place of worship. The pastor, Fr. Joseph Rielag, SJ, and the Building Committee went to St. Louis to meet with German born architect Louis Wessbecher to discuss the

design and construction of a new St. Charles Borromeo church. On July 22, the parish engaged Wessbecher to draw up plans and specifications. He announced his estimate to be $52,000 for a new Romanesque structure made of Bedford stone. The Finance Committee reported that pledges amounted to $11,584 and cash donations totaled $3,156. Tornado insurance on the wrecked church amounted to $6,000. The Committee voted to issue bonds to help pay for the construction. The group also approved to raise additional money with an individual monthly collec-tion. The priests distributed special envelopes at all the Masses suggesting parishioners “return them containing a day’s wage.” The Building Committee began taking bids for the construction work. They awarded the job to John Ueberle and Son, a St. Charles contractor, after he submitted the lowest bid. Ueberle got to work immediately. The steel erection got underway in November 1915. By March 1916, workers had poured a concrete floor and finished the front steps. On March 23, the first car-load of Bedford stone arrived. The next day construction workers installed a steam engine for the derrick and hoist. Slowly, the walls rose. On Palm Sunday, April 16, the parish celebrated the laying of the cornerstone, attended and blessed by Arch-bishop John Glennon. On the morning of October 6, 1916, with about two days work left to complete the steeple, thirty- five year old Fred Ueberle, son of owner John, and three carpenters boarded the hoist for the steeple landing. As the men neared their destination, the cable broke. All four plummeted nearly fifty feet to the ground. The three carpenters recovered but Fred, with his back and feet crushed, developed complications, and died. His funeral drew a large crowd of people to St. Peter’s Church. By May of the next year, workers installed pews and the communion railing and volunteers helped clean the building. On May 27, 1917, the new church was ready for dedication by Archbishop Glennon, 1 year, 10 months and 20 days after the dreadful tornado. The following week, clockmaker George Hoffmann, began to install the four clock faces recovered from the brick church into the tower of the new St. Charles Borromeo house of worship.
