Many thanks!
Our traditional “Happy New Year” greeting is
most familiar around January 1. In truth, for our
parish, the “New Year” begins now: new officers
assume their leadership roles, parish organizations
re-group, the kids come back to class (and one grade
higher), sports teams re-assemble, and we “resolve” to
“make it a good year.”
One of the most important activities to get underway “for the
new year” is our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
That’s the process for adults to enter the Catholic Church.
Here at St Charles, our dynamic parochial vicar, Father Ryan
Mann, coordinates the RCIA team of priests, deacons, religious,
and laity. RCIA sessions begin Monday, September 11,
at 7:00pm, John Paul II Room, second floor of the Parish
Activities Center. Each Monday evening session lasts about
ninety minutes. RCIA concludes on Holy Saturday when the
candidates are baptized or make a Profession of Faith, receive
First Eucharist, and are confirmed.
RCIA is for those not baptized, or for those baptized in
another Christian faith, who want to learn more about the
Catholic Church. Typical RCIA participants might be those who
are planning marriage to a Catholic, those who have been
married to a Catholic for some time, those who have a child
receiving First Communion in the spring, or for someone who has
been thinking for a while about joining the Church.
No formal commitment is expected at this time. Just “come
and see” as the Gospel says. For more information about this
year’s RCIA, give Father Ryan a call at 440-884-3030.
Please share this information about RCIA with family, friends,
or neighbors who might be interested.
St Charles Cyrenians tackle a variety of tasks that we call the
corporal works of mercy. During August, they ask for your
donations of peanut butter and jelly. The Cyrenians make “P B
and J” sandwiches that are distributed to the homeless in
Cleveland. If you provide the fixin’s our Cyrenians will pull it all
together.. Please leave your peanut butter and jelly donations in
the bins found in the church lobbies.
St Charles Borromeo Education Foundation Board members
met last Thursday for their quarterly meeting. St Charles Parish
Finance Council met last Thursday, October 24, for their
bimonthly gathering and reviewed the books and statements in
preparation for the Annual Report to the People scheduled for
the weekend of September 9/10.
There is a September Parish Activities Calendar in this
bulletin. Please “clip-and-keep it” as a handy reminder of the
many things planned for St Charles in the upcoming month.
On a personal note, many thanks to all of you who sent a note,
a card, an e-mail, a phone message, or showed concern in any
way while I was recuperating from my recent hospitalization.
Your prayers and kind words have meant the world to me and
have helped a great deal in getting me back on the tracks. I am
feeling better, I still get a little tired, but I am up-and-around and
getting some work done.

Merici Chapel…We’re always making a list for some-
thing, grocery shopping, kids going back to school,
going on vacation, planning a party, etc. On one of
those lists did you put “make a visit to the chapel”?
Why? Doesn’t that seem important? It should come
before all other things in life! Give it some serious
thought!!

THEOLOGY ON TAP | HEIGHTS Every FIRST Wednesday of the month, young adults in their 20’s and 30’s are invited to gather at Nighttown in Cleveland Heights
(12387 Cedar Road, Cleveland 44106) at 7PM to hear an engaging speaker reflect on some aspect of the faith while enjoying a pint
and some tasty food! Each night kicks off
with a social, which includes complemen-
tary appetizers and a cash bar, followed by
a speaker. Admission is only $5. Our next
speaker on Wednesday, September 6th
will be Dr. Beth Rath, professor of
philosophy at Borromeo Seminary in
Wickliffe, OH. So often, people perceive
an insurmountable war between faith and
reason, religion and science, theism with
rationalism. This perceived dichotomy is a
lie. Come hear Dr. Rath defend the claim
that the Catholic Church is, and always
has been, “The Cradle of Modern Science
and the Guardian of Reason.” Don’t
miss this brilliant speaker and amazing
topic! Theology on Tap is a great way for
young adults, college students, and newly
married couples to go deeper in their faith
and connect with other young Catholics in
the area. For more information, please
contact Fr. Patrick Schultz (216) 321-
