Weekend of February 17, 2019

Ninth in a series of sixteen articles that help explain the meaning of the Mass.

From the earliest days of the Church there have been collections of money during the Liturgy. The collection is one of the ways we make a return to God for all He has done for us. St. Paul advised his congregations to care for the poor, and he told the rich churches to send money to the poorer churches. As time went on, the people brought to Church all the things needed for the Mass – bread and wine for communion, money for the upkeep of the church buildings, food for the poor, and support for the Church’s ministries. The people brought money, food, animals, and a share of their crops as symbols of their labor. All of this was collected during Mass. Today, it is much more practical to limit our gifts to bread, wine and money. Whatever our gifts, we give freely, tithing from our wealth, knowing that God’s generosity to us will not be undone, and remembering the greatest gift of the Body and Blood of His Son, Jesus. As the gifts are brought forward and prepared, we too prepare ourselves to receive Jesus! All that we are, we place with the gifts that are brought forward. In the early days the priest washed his hands after handling all the various foods and animal gifts. Today as the priest washes his hands, he prays in silence to be cleansed from his sins. This should be the prayer in ALL our hearts!!!
