St. Charles Borromeo Church June 12, 2016

Today, Sunday June 12, I celebrate my fortieth anniversary as a priest. My classmates and I were ordained by Bishop Michael J Murphy on Saturday,

June 12, 1976, at St John Cathedral. It was the Bicentennial Year: the 200th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Acknowledging our nation’s birthday, the final hymn of the Ordination Mass was “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” I still remember many of the details of that weekend. My First Mass was on Sunday, June 13, at St Patrick Church in West Park, where I had been baptized and educated. It was hot and humid. And there was no air conditioning! I moved things along, as--I am told--I still do today! Later I would celebrate my mother’s funeral Mass at St Pat’s in 1989 and my dad’s in 1990. My first assignment, in 1976, was at St Ambrose Parish in Brunswick. I stayed there seven years. The pastor was Father Robert Hilkert, a good and kind priest who became a trusted friend. I was honored to preach his funeral homily when he died in 2005. He knew what was important and he had a great sense of humor. In 1977, the Bishop assigned another newly ordained priest to St Ambrose: Father Joseph Labak. I have asked Father Labak to preach at today’s Anniversary Mass. We were both transferred from Brunswick in 1983. I was sent to St Charles as associate pastor. Truth be told, at that time, I did not want to come here. In 1983, there were fourteen weekend Masses. St Charles was referred to as “the factory.” I remember thinking “I’ll spend all my time saying Mass; I’ll never get to know the people!” Father John Iammarino had been assigned to St Charles the year before me. His advice was “Give it six months. By Christmas your attitude will change.” He was right! St Charles quickly became home. I was here about a year when Monsignor Corrigan (pastor, 1968-1987) asked me to handle the day-to-day administration of the parish. When Monsignor retired in 1987, Bishop Pilla, after consulting with the parishioners, appointed me as pastor. I was told about the appointment around St Patrick’s Day but I was also told to “keep it quiet” until the end of April. It was a difficult secret to keep! I used those six weeks to draw up a list of twenty-four items that I hoped to accomplish. So having been here for four years became a blessing. As time went on, a few things were dropped from the list and a few items were added. The real story is the wonderful people I have met while “going my way:” parishioners, priests, religious women, and staff members. I have seen a whole generation of St Charles “pass away” these last thirty-three years. I have attended almost seven thousand wakes since 1983! The older I get, the more I realize it is all about gratitude. I am grateful for my faith, my parents and family, tremendous friends (both lay folk and ordained!), those who provided my education and my spiritual formation. I was thirty-three when I came here in 1983. Monsignor Corrigan was sixty-six. Now I am sixty-six and--as Father Ryan constantly reminds me--he is thirty-three! So half of my life has been with you at St Charles. The gift of the priesthood has been a forty-year joy. Serving as your pastor has made it even better. On this fortieth priestly anniversary, I simply offer my sincere and humble thanks to the Good Lord--and to all of you.
