PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The 94th Annual Winnipeg School Division Speed Skat ing Races will be held on Monday, April 22nd at the MTS Centre.

Intramurals in April will be co-ed Basketball. Grades 3 and 4 and Grades 5 and 6 will play in separate divisions at noon hour. When it is dry, we will be able to play games outside as well as in the gym. Intramural basketball will continue into May.

Running Club begins the second week of April for Grades 4-6 students . It runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m. It is in preparation for non-competitive Mini Fit Runs at River Heights Junior High in May and the competitive Winnipeg School Division Fit Run the first week of June at Assiniboine Park. The runs are 2 km in length and we gradually progress up to this distance in training. Running is a lifelong activity that all can participate in. All Grades 4- 6 students are welcome, as well as their

parents . If any Running Club member would like to participate in the Manitoba Marathon Relay, please speak with Mr. McGregor.

To do the marathon relay , we need 5 students (or 4 students and an adult) to have a relay team. The relay team members would need to be able to run approximately 5 miles. If there are enough interested students, this group would be doing more training, done in a gradual progression to prepare for this additional outside of school division event.

The Manitoba Marathon Relay is the morning of Father’s Day in June.

Buying new runners? If you are buying runners for your daughter/son please buy runners that offer support and therefore less chance of injuries. ‘Skater’ runners and Converse-like runners are fun to wear, but offer little or no support and injuries are more likely to occur from running and other activities in Phys Ed classes. ‘Running’ or training runners or ‘cross trainer’ runners offer the best support.

MUSIC NEWS “ I’m sure my father will be reconciled with me in his grave if I can prove that I’m worthy of my artistic profession” Johann Strauss Jr.

Learning about Strauss’s music has been a main focus in our music lessons this month.

We were truly inspired by the delightful landscapes and magnificent landmarks along the Danube River and reflected this feeling in our art works.

You are welcome to visit the “music” hallway and to enjoy our “Blue Danube “ artistic gallery.

Grades 3 and 4 Singing Club students powerfully and energetically performed the song "Winter Fun" during the March Assembly. They were even flying in the air from lots of excitement !

Library Books - please help your child(ren) look for outstanding Library books. You’ll know they belong to the school by the yellow or white barcode on the back of the book. Thank you!

LUNCH PROGRAM NEWS

…April already, Where did the time go?

A few lunch time reminders – students need to be bringing their own utensils for lunch. Hot water and microwaves are available daily, however, it is recommended that the students not use the microwave on days they are attending extra-curricular activities due to time restrictions. Food must be THAWED, and there is a 2-minute re-heating time limit. This is to avoid long line-ups. Food must be in an appropriate, labelled, microwave safe container. Spring is around the corner and with it new adventures during lunch recess. Please ensure your children have the correct clothing for all conditions - cold, wet, hot, or muddy; that means hats, mitts, extra socks as necessary. Children are reminded not to take any food or drink outside during the lunch hour. It attracts bugs (wasps), creates litter and is a choking hazard. Lunch Program applications and P.A.S.C.A.L. application forms for the 2013/2014 school year will be distributed to students in kindergarten through Grade 5 in May, thank you. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact … Tammie Adolfson Lunch Program Coordinator Brock Corydon School 204-488-4422 (between 11:45 and 1:30pm)

NEWS FROM THE STUDENT COUNCIL…..

We are preparing for our school’s participation in The Canadian Red Cross “Pink Day” on April 10th. This day is to raise awareness about the impact of bullying in schools. All students and staff are asked to wear pink on April 10th to show solidarity in taking a stand against bullying. We will be making pink bracelets so all students can participate.

Student council will be creating a co-operative poster that all students are invited to sign to support those being bullied. A large pink t-shirt will be cut apart into puzzle pieces with one for each class to sign. On Pink Day, April 10th, we will be having an assembly and will assemble our signed pink t-shirt puzzle pieces then to demonstrate our stand against bullying. In March we created a bi-lingual (English and Hebrew) welcome banner for the hockey team from Israel.

CAMERA CLUB….

Camera Club for the grade 1/2s has started. We began by learning how to hold and use the camera safely. We have experimented using different angles, orientations and perspectives as we took photos. We have taken a photo walk through the school to create our own photo collections which we will be editing in the lab. We will be using these pictures to create some picture books for the school. The students have been very excited to participate and have demonstrated how to use a camera responsibly.

Our school welcomed 17 Arab, Israeli, and Druze hockey students from Israel March 12-19. Some of our students even had the opportunity to billet them at their homes for the week! The hockey club came to Winnipeg to learn about hockey life in Canada and to learn from professional coaches. They spent each morning at the MTS Iceplex exoeriencing training on and off the ice. They hockey players and the coaches want to extend, to the entire Brock Corydon communi ty, a heartfelt thank you for your generosity, warm welcome and kindness the entire week. They said that Brock Corydon is a wonderful school and they will never forget their experiences here! (The tobogganing and skiing were a huge hit!)
