Chris Humfrey's Wild LifeSunday,13 March 2011

Meet Chris Humfrey, a zoologist who lives with his young family and their REALLY big dog in an idyllic bush haven in country Victoria. But the Humfreys also share their home with a few other pets - more than 2000 and each one of them needs care and attention 24/7.

This isn't your average family home. It's a private zoo where human and animal sagas unfold on a daily basis. Chris and his wife Nicole work around the clock to keep their very extended family happy and healthy and manage their enthusiastic crew of zookeepers. Each week Chris will share with us this extraordinary life and his amazing knowledge of Australia's fauna. Follow Chris in this chaotic, animal-crazy series that captures the drama, the danger, the animal antics and the sheer exhilaration of Chris Humfrey's Wild Life. Every day, a new saga unfolds at the zoo.

In tonight's show - when a presenter on Chris's wildlife shows walks out at the start of the busy season, Chris is forced to fast track another staff member. Darren has been presenting with the team for a while, and while he's a unique combination of snake catcher, theatrical actor and comedian, he's petrified of water. So when Chris takes him snorkelling to collect species for the marine show, the challenge for Darren is not just impressing the boss and hopefully landing the new presenting job, but also in conquering his fears. Meanwhile, a door carelessly left open results in the office being over-run by thousands of stick insects.

Attenborough's JourneySunday,13 March 2011

This film follows David Attenborough as he travels the globe filming his new series, David Attenborough's First Life, in which he explores the very origins of life on earth.

David, 84, journeys to the parts of the world which have had special meaning to him during his 50 years of broadcasting. Beginning near his boyhood Leicestershire home, where he first collected fossils, he travels to Morocco's arid deserts, the glaciers of Canada and the crystal-clear waters of Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

David reveals: "When I was a boy growing up in the Midlands, the rocks and limestone you found were full of the most magical things. You hit a stone and it suddenly fell open, and there was this amazing coiled shell, beautiful and extraordinary, and nobody had seen that for 150 million years, except you. So I thought it was very romantic and exciting and it appealed to the small boy's instinct of collecting things. To be honest I don't think I've ever really lost that."

Attenborough's Journey provides a unique insight into the mind and character of one of the world's most iconic broadcasters as he shares his passions for the natural world. Combining his global journey for First Life and archive material looking back at his illustrious career, the film reveals what makes him tick.

Compass: Philip NitschkeSunday,13 March 2011

What makes a good life? Why are we here? Is there a God and what is God anyway? As a theologian, host Scott Stephens, is fascinated by life's big questions, so he's asking prominent Australians to open up and reflect on their lives to find out what they think is the meaning of life.

This six-part Compass series is hosted by Scott Stephens, a theologian who each week explores the deeper issues of life with a high profile Australian.

Featured in this series are Matt Preston, Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, Julian Morrow, Clare Bowditch, Philip Nitschke and Rolf de Heer.

Scott asks them about their lives and beliefs, as well as the experiences, emotions and insights that have shaped and changed them.

Scott's guest tonight is Dr Philip Nitschke, one of our most controversial Australians. Philip's stand on voluntary euthanasia has inextricably connected him to death, but he has a lot to say about the meaning of life too. Scott talks to Philip about life, death, tragedy, sorrow, love, hate, forgiveness, God and betrayal. His answers are disarmingly frank and surprising.

How Earth Made Us: WaterTuesday,15 March 2011

The engaging Scottish Professor, Iain Stewart, presents Part Two of his impressive series about how the natural forces of the planet have shaped human civilisation.

Tonight, the good professor's focus is on the magic of water and mankind's struggle to control it.

The presence of water shapes renews and nourishes our planet. It's our planet's lifeblood. Water makes Earth alive.

Yet water is just one of ways that the power of the planet has shaped our lives. The Earth has immense power yet it is rarely mentioned in history books. In this series Professor Stewart explores four great planetary forces that have influenced our history.

The power of the Deep Earth which fuelled technological innovation; Wind that shaped the face of entire continents; Fire which gave us the power to conquer the planet; and Water.

Of all the planet's forces perhaps none has greater power over humankind than water. Our struggle to control water has been behind the rise and fall of some of the greatest civilisations on Earth.

Tonight, Professor Stewart explores our complex relationship with water. Visiting spectacular locations in Iceland, the Middle East and India he looks at how control over water has been central to human existence.

He takes a precarious flight in a motorised paraglider to experience the cycle of freshwater and discovers how villagers in the foothills of the Himalayas have built a living bridge to cope with the monsoon. He also visits Egypt to reveal the secret of the Pharaohs' success.

The Gradual Demise Of Phillipa FinchTuesday,15 March 2011

Tonight screens a compile of The Gradual Demise of Phillipa Finch episodes eleven and twelve.

How to Handle CowboysPhillipa knows that there are several things a girl can do when betrayed by yet another emotional cowboy: she tries disappearing into the arms of a sonic embrace; collecting her tears into plastic bottles and selling them as recycled water at the local growers' market; adopting pets (so she will never be in want of unconditional love again); becoming really, really fit, sexy and super strong... and finally becoming the boy that she has been waiting for.

Nurturing illusions on a skateboard, social disasters and the joy of hand written lettersFilled with a desperate longing for perfect love once more, Phillipa adds further connections to her life that are on the cusp of maybe love. One of these distractions is her friend Skater Boy, a gentle soul who had been skating in and out of Phillipa's life since art school.

Although her feelings are big, extending this magical connection is unthinkable, for lurking on the edges is his girlfriend whom he has been courting since the Industrial Revolution (and who is less than overjoyed by Phillipa's presence).

When Skater Boy invites Phillipa to his latest video installation, she accepts.

Jennifer Byrne Presents: Cult ReadsTuesday,15 March 2011

Jennifer Byrne Presents is a series of individual treats for lovers of books and writing. A panel of leading authors and expert celebrity guests join Jennifer for investigations into some of the most popular reading genres, they reveal the conventions, controversies, and titles that have helped shaped the literary landscape.

Up for discussion by Jennifer and guests is the genre of cult fiction. Which they concede from the get-go is almost impossible to define except to say that these are books which gripped their imagination and never let it go. Books which at some stage rewired their head, changing either the way they lived - or the way they thought about living. Think Luke Reinhart's The Dice Man. Think Zen and the Art of Motor Cycle Maintenance, Catch-22 or The Outsider.

Books become cult for a raft of reasons, but the books Jennifer and guests will talking about have at least two common threads: one, that however you define it, you know a cult book when you see one. And two, they have their own unique voice – even if it's a slightly mad or bad one. So this special has been built around them - it's the book clubbers’ chance to discuss some of the most interesting books ever written, books united by nothing but their ability to incite passion in the reader.

Joining Jennifer to discuss the phenomenon of cult books are: book publisher Bob Sessions; author and eclectic reader Markus Zusak; singer, writer and raconteur Dave Grainey and the Book Club's very own Marieke Hardy.

Roo is there in a flash and the best friends are reunited - but shockingly, Zach's risk-taking goes too far.

Turn Back Time: The High StreetThursday,17 March 2011

This week we move on to the sophisticated Edwardian era. The butcher, the baker, the grocer and the ironmonger are joined by a dressmaker, and together they must provide a modern town with the exceptional service and luxuriant shop displays worthy of the Edwardians.

The baker's family find themselves running an Edwardian tea shop, while the butchers must sell game in all its gory glory to modern customers. The grocer has trained staff, but the challenge of creating an early 20th century wedding breakfast piles on the pressure.

All the shopkeepers struggle with maintaining standards, and it becomes clear that underneath its glossy veneer the Edwardian high street was a tough place for women and children. The arrival of call-up papers reminds the traders and the town of the terrible impact that World War One had on Britain's communities.

New Tricks: Fashion VictimFriday,18 March 2011

A retrospective of 80s fashion designer Ritchie Levene reignites the mystery of his murder during a party eight years ago.

Back then the chief suspect was Ritchie's PA, Melanie Higgs, whose bloody fingerprints were everywhere. She claimed she found the body, but then ran. A series of psychological examinations concluded she probably didn't kill him. She says Ritchie's wife Alison still had her drug-addicted ex-boyfriend Tyler Curtis in the background - even living at their house. And she hands over Ritchie's notebook which she took on the night of his death.

Even though Tyler Curtis disappeared around the time of the murder, Pullman's (Amanda Redman) team manages to track him down. He says he left the Levene house when he realised he couldn't win Alison back, and stayed for a short time with a friend of Ritchie's - investment broker Colin Beck.

Meanwhile, Ritchie’s first wife Sarah is convinced he was killed by his younger brother Adrian, who has since taken over control of the company and made a fortune.

Pullman discovers that Adrian is now having an affair with Alison, and that Ritchie wanted to buy him out. Alison mentions that Ritchie said he was coming into some money.

Meanwhile, Ritchie's notebook reveals notations of large amounts of money, which the team traces to an investment scheme that Ritchie was channelling his friends' money into. And it was owned by none other than his friend Colin Beck. If Beck was running a Ponzi scheme, would that be motive for murder?

Strike Back (Episode 2 of 3)Saturday,19 March 2011

Starring Richard Armitage and Andrew Lincoln, Strike Back is a compelling story of betrayal, glory, redemption and revenge played out through the interlinking lives of two former soldiers: military hero Hugh Collinson (Lincoln) and discharged veteran John Porter (Armitage).

Harare, Zimbabwe: President Robert Mugabe makes a live address at the National Assembly. As he leaves Mugabe is shot dead. Colonel Tshuma of Zimbabwe’s Secret Intelligence Service and his Elite Guards hunt for the perpetrators. A lone gunman, Felix Masuku is cornered. As an official fleet of black limousines sweeps by, Masuku wonders if Mugabe is really dead.

Back in London, news reports state that Zimbabwean officials claim the British government is behind the assassination plot which resulted in the death of one of Mugabe’s body-doubles. Section 20 is given the task of making the problem go away and Porter (Richard Armitage) is despatched to Zimbabwe, under the guise of a diamond dealer. Arrested for smuggling, Porter is thrown into the same prison as Masuku. With the help of his fellow Section 20 operative Layla (Jodhi May), Porter engineers a prison break. However, the mission is placed in jeopardy when Layla rouses the suspicions of Tshuma.

Meanwhile, Collinson (Andrew Lincoln) has travelled to Africa to confront the double agent, who turns out to be someone already on the payroll. Later, with the help of South African Special Forces, Collinson leads an assault on the orphanage where Porter has been hiding since his prison break, to get Porter out. However, Porter is anything but happy to see Collinson. And with Masuku unaccounted for Collinson wants to know where he is.

Back in the UK, Layla quizzes Porter about the ill-fated hostage extraction in 2003. Increasingly suspicious of Collinson, Layla is wary of the history and secrets between the two men. She needs to know which of them she can trust…and what happened on that stairwell in Basra.

The New InventorsHosted by James O'Loghlin, The New Inventors highlights the latest contemporary creations from the new generation of inventors, innovators and designers.

Inventions featured on the program:

LEARN 2 SURF STRAP - by inventor Mick Slattery from NSW

Learning to surf is hard, especially for kids. Young kids often give up too soon when each attempt at standing up is quickly followed by a fall right back into the water. Mick has surfed his whole life and wanted to teach his three young kids the sport he loves, but he needed a way to encourage them so they would not give up.

The Learn 2 Surf Strap enables kids as young as three to safely and successfully stand up on a surfboard and ride the waves to the beach. The strap allows parents to hold their children upright whilst riding with them on the board.

RE-LOCATABLE TRUCK TURNTABLE - by inventor Adam Blakiston from VIC

Trucks are not exactly known for their petite stature. Manoeuvring them into tight spots can be a nightmare, and dangerous, especially in areas of high traffic such as construction sites or loading docks. Turntables that eliminate the need for turning circle space exist, but they typically require installation in-ground, making them permanent fixtures.

The Re-locatable Truck Turntable can be installed in two days and can be entirely relocated to another site when the turntable is no longer needed. The turntable has a capacity of up to 70 tonnes and has a low profile of only 250mm.

WINDOW WEATHERGUARD - by inventor Andrew Cottle from NSW

In stormy weather we usually have to close our windows so the inside of our homes don't get wet. A little water may not kill you, but wet walls and plaster cost money. Leaving your windows shut will keep the rain out, but then you're left with a stuffy house which is hot, unpleasant, and bad for your health.

Andrew Cottle was involved in a serious car accident in 2001. He was told he’d never walk or talk again and was left with serious brain injuries. After months of rehabilitation and help from specialist surgeons like Dr Charles Theo, Andrew learned to walk and talk normally again, and if that were not enough he then invented the Window Weatherguard, an idea he’d dreamed of before his accident. The Window Weatherguard is a unique system for sliding windows that keeps rain out while allowing the free flow of energy efficient, toxin free, fresh air into the home.

CatalystCatalyst dishes up a smorgasbord of food science.

Peak PhosphatePhosphorus is the chemical backbone of DNA - every cell, plant and living thing, needs phosphorus to survive and grow. Its molecular structure allows it to combine efficiently with several other nutrients necessary for plant growth making it the farmer's fertiliser of choice. But research suggests that the traditional sources of phosphate have peaked and demand will soon exceed supply. Mark Horstman discovers that human urine may provide an alternative supply of the element so vital to our economy.

GM for GoodGenetically modified crops, although controversial, have been proposed as a solution for future world food shortages. But now, there is focus on bio-fortified foods as a solution for nutritional poverty in the 3rd world. Crops such as Cassava are being engineered to contain more protein, vitamin A and iron while other foods are being fortified with omega 3 to be more heart healthy. Graham Phillips travels to the Mecca of GM, Monsanto in St Louis, USA.

Salt: The Hidden ThreatA high salt diet puts us at risk of high blood pressure and the resultant heart disease. But is it really that easy to cut salt from the diet? Taste buds can be easily retrained to enjoy food with less salt, but processed foods continue to contain high levels of the silent killer. Maryanne Demasi discovers that there are very few options at the supermarket for the salt conscious shoppers.

Comfort FoodComfort food - that sweet, fatty treat that makes us feel so much better. Tanya Ha examines new research indicating that comfort food can have significant therapeutic effects - and could even help people dealing with long term mental trauma.

Food ComaWhy is it that we feel sleepy after a meal? Following a meal, glucose escapes into the blood and heads for the brain to liven things up a little, but the brain has other ideas. If you're caught napping on the job, blame it on postprandial somnolence, otherwise known as the food coma.
