Dear Friends,

This past year exceeded all our expectations. God is at work at Brookwood, and your support enables our Citizens to live fulfilling lives with meaning and purpose. Here are a few examples of our blessings:

• The new Center for Education and Enterprise building is rapidly taking shape and the Café is getting a much-needed renovation • A record number of 50,000 poinsettias were planted by Citizens this past holiday season • More than 25,000 pieces of handcrafted items were produced by Citizens in our Ceramics, Stonecasting, Cement and Grand Parkway shops • 200 people from 30 organizations attended our Center for Learning Conferences • More than 60,000 people volunteered, took a tour or had lunch in our Café

I am pleased to announce the addition of two new leaders in our Community. Becah Butler has been promoted from Director of Education to Chief Learning Officer and Director of the Stephen C. Beasley Center for Learning. In her new role she will promote outreach

and training initiatives and awaken the God-given potential in our Citizens and in each of us.

Brookwood is incredibly blessed that Elizabeth Carlyle has come on board to serve as our Chief Operating Officer. She previously was General Counsel for Second Baptist Church and Vice

President and General Counsel for Vision Source. She possesses a heart for ministry and is enthusiastic to share her knowledge and experience to move Brookwood into the next chapter of excellence.

I invite you to come to Brookwood to see first-hand how you are truly making a difference in the lives of our Citizens. Please join us May 2, 3 and 4 for Brookwood’s annual Spring Extravaganza, or visit our website at brookwoodcommunity.org to find information on how you can become involved with Brookwood.

As our Citizens say, “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” for all you do for the Brookwood Community!

With great appreciation, Vivian Shudde Chief Executive Officer

A highlight of every rodeo season is a trip to the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest. Over the past 15 years, thanks to the generosity of Waste Management and its employees, Brookwood Citizens have been invited to the Waste Management booth for an afternoon full of fun. Citizens played rodeo-themed games, participated in arts and crafts, danced to classic country music and ate bar-b-que lunch. Citizens also took a tour of the rodeo grounds and saw first-hand the Waste Management trucks at work.

“Once again, Waste Management employees were honored to celebrate with our Brookwood friends and family. The rodeo cookoff event is an annual tradition and being a community partner is one of our core values. We can’t wait to see everyone next year,” said Harrison Davis, Sr. Learning Consultant at Waste Management.

Blinged out for RodeoRodeo season in Houston isn’t complete without the annual Brookwood Rodeo Fashion Show Luncheon. Decked out in fashions from Cobblestone Cottage, members of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo volunteer committees modeled the latest trends in western attire while guests enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Brookwood Café. The crowd favorites were Brookwood Citizens wearing hats and belts from Shudde Bros. Hatters located in the Brookwood Gift and Garden Center.

January 22 was a day to remember as the Houston Astros Caravan made a special tour stop at Brookwood to see some of their most enthusiastic and loyal fans. Astros first baseman Tyler White and pitcher Brady Rodgers, along with Astros broadcaster Steve Sparks and the Shooting Stars cheerleaders participated in a spirited pep rally. The Citizens can’t wait for the 2019 season to cheer on their hometown heroes! The Brookwood Handbell Ensemble will perform the National Anthem at the Astros game on August 22 with the Houston Bronze Ensemble.

Meet the newest member of the familyBrookwood proudly welcomed Demi, our new therapy dog, to campus this past December. Demi is an English Field Trial Bred Black Labrador Retriever of true royal lineage including the Duke of Buccleuch’s Kennel in Scotland. Demi was graciously donated through the Healing Pause organization and now lives full time at the Brookwood Community with her new handler Community Life Director Greg Glauser. As Brookwood’s furry ambassador and on-staff dog, Demi brings love, healing and moments of joy to all Brookwood Citizens. Demi also helps with fitness activities and even had her very own 4th birthday party.

“Our partnership with Brookwood was a Godsend. Demi was meant to find a home at Brookwood. She has overcome hardships in her life, just as the Citizens of Brookwood have, yet she takes every opportunity to give back love in her community as does Brookwood,” said Healing Pause Founder Nathan Davila.

Thank you to Demi’s in-kind sponsors who graciously provide the following services:

The Brookwood and Beyond Capital Campaign began in 2012 to expand, sustain, and scale Brookwood’s mission. It is a bold commitment to enhance lives of thousands of individuals with neurological, cognitive and motor impairments in communities throughout our state, the nation and the world.

More than $30.8 million has been committed to the $34 million campaign and will provide facilities for more Citizens to participate in Brookwood’s vocational, residential, educational and recreational programs. In addition, through the Stephen C. Beasley Center for Learning, outreach and training programs will expand—taking the knowledge, experience and care model that Brookwood has developed and implemented over the last 30 years and offering it to people far beyond our Brookshire campus.

The J.E. & L.E. Mabee Foundation gave a $2 million grant in 2018 allowing us to break ground on the 41,000 square-foot Center for Education and Enterprise building last fall. It is scheduled to be ready in August and the dedication will be October 10, 2019.

The next major campaign initiative to fund are two new residences. These homes will accommodate 24 Citizens and up to 14 staff, increasing our residential population by 25%. Included in the homes will be rooms for temporary respite care for Day Program Citizens and intern housing for experiential educational opportunities for students working toward a career in nursing and special education field.

“Our goal is to complete the campaign fundraising by July, so that construction can begin this fall on the new residential homes. When the Center for Education and Enterprise and the two homes are complete, we will be able to accept up to 100 additional Citizens,” stated Carol Thornburg, Chief Development Officer.

Now is the time to get involved! For more information, visit brookwoodcommunity.org/capitalcampaign or contact Carol Thornburg at [email protected] or 281-375-2110.

The grand total of $765,709 was announced, as were the top fundraising teams. Team Davis Bankston took the top prize with $57,000 raised and received a gourmet dinner prepared by Brookwood’s own Chef Michael for Davis and his family and friends in the Kilroy home.

Rounding out the top 10 teams were Team Kyndall Krippner, the Brookwood Dream Team, Team Meade Greer, Bob Smith’s Team, Team Jenny Boudreaux, the Lawler Family Team, Team Patrick McBirney, Weston Lakes Team, and Team Hayley Herzstein. If you’ve ever been to the Brookwood campus on the weekend, chances are you’ve seen how much the Citizens enjoy riding their traditional, tandem, side by side, hand pedal or three wheeler bikes. With the help of volunteers, Citizens participate in bike and walk fitness every Saturday afternoon from October through March.

Over 100 volunteer and Citizen bikes are currently stored outside. Thanks to the generosity of many donors including Irene and Brian Binash, Steve Radack, Nancy and Bud Simpson, Lynn and Mike Smith, Cindy and John Zuilhof, along with Bruce Stein’s incredible fundraising efforts, plus our Citizens own contributions and numerous in-kind gifts, a new bike pavilion is now becoming a reality. Even local restaurant Snooze got in on the fundraising efforts!

With a construction completion date of early summer, the pavilion will provide a bike storage and repair facility as well as a central meet up location for fitness activities on campus. What a special addition to an active Brookwood community!

Some Citizens are training for Brookwood’s fall 15k and spring 25k bike rallies. New for this year is the “Bike to the Beach,” a 25 mile ride to Galveston on September 28. Ten Citizens will participate with volunteers on a tandem bike.

If you’re interested in joining the Brookwood “Bike to the Beach” team to Galveston, contact Greg Glauser at 281-375-2202.

Every Brookwood Citizen has a passion, and for Dwight that passion is recycling. Dwight cares a lot about making the planet a better place and worries about the health of the environment. Dwight doesn’t let his wheelchair get in the way of going around campus to pick up aluminum cans. His home teachers Jason and Leah assist Dwight with collecting, sorting and recycling the cans, and Dwight’s “Recycling Assistant,” Admissions Coordinator Laura DeMunbrun, helps track his progress on a report.

Dwight recently received an award in March from Brookwood’s own “Environmental Protection Agency” for hitting a milestone of recycling 10,000 cans since January of 2017. He can also be seen around campus cheering on the LSU Tigers and working in Horticulture. Way to go Dwight!

Brookwood Citizens and community staff members welcomed 37 attendees February 25-28 to the “Brookwood Way” Conference presented by the Stephen C. Beasley Center for Learning. Attendees from Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Colorado, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and even Hawaii came together for networking, mutual learning and inspirational fellowship.

The Conference included an in-depth tour of the campus, luncheon featuring Brookwood Founder Yvonne Streit and the always popular Citizen Panel, a visit to Brookwood Grand Parkway at Gallery Furniture, numerous educational sessions, and a tour of Brookwood in Georgetown. “It was truly inspiring to see so many people coming together who want to make an impact in the lives of others,” stated Jana Mullins Danna. New Product Designs ContinueThe Production Design Team continues to create unique and beautiful artwork that the Citizens can produce in the Ceramics and Stone - casting handcraft workshops. Many of these new pieces are made by Citizens like Tyler in Brookwood‘s Grand Parkway location at Gallery Furniture. This type of work provides an incredible sense of purpose and self-worth for so many adults with disabilities who long to live meaningful and productive lives.

Check out these products and more at Brookwood’s Gift and Garden Centers in Brookshire and Richmond, or shop online at brookwoodstore.org for gifts your family, friends and teachers will love!

Four times a year, Brookwood’s Citizens and staff members come together for a Community Worship service in the Brookwood Chapel. This special time is full of songs and prayers to celebrate God’s many blessings. Several Citizens share a passion for music, and these talented musicians play an active role in the service. Vicki leads the choir with her captivating voice, Chris uses his incredible God-given talents on the piano, and Jeff loves to play the guitar. It is truly heartwarming to see what an important part Spiritual Life is to the Brookwood Community.

Spindletop Charities Emerging Leaders group volunteered in the Horticulture department at Brookwood in March and enjoyed lunch in the Cafe. As a not-for-profit focused on enhancing the lives of others through funding and volunteering from the oil and gas industry, Spindletop’s generosity to Brookwood goes back decades with multiple donations, including underwriting the construction of the Spindletop Greenhouse.

“Spindletop Charities is incredibly thankful to have immersed our Emerging Leaders and executives alongside the Citizens of Brookwood in a day of service and fellowship.

Our volunteer day at Brookwood is the first of many service events to continue for years to come that strengthens our partnership and helps us execute our mission of oil & gas industry professionals supporting the under-served members of our community,” said Spindletop Emerging Leaders member, Richard Mercer.

Spindletop Charities also recently ordered personalized gifts with the organization’s logo made by Brookwood Citizens in Ceramics. It’s committed groups and volunteers with serving hearts that keep Brookwood going strong!

Club Impact students from Montgomery High School helped pass out cupcakes and sang songs with Citizens.

Brookwood won the “Student’s Choice Award” at the British International School in Katy and received a check for $2,000 at the student assembly in December.

Second Baptist students from the 1463 campus spent part of their spring break volunteering at Brookwood playing basketball with the Special Olympics teams.

Houston Christian High School Seniors hosted a Rodeo Day with arts and crafts, bull riding and a dance party.

Partnerships with businesses and individuals have always been at the cornerstone of Brookwood’s success. There’s no better partner that epitomizes generosity and all around commitment than Renee Morton, owner of Morton Mortgage. Renee purchases her client closing gifts from Brookwood, and also coordinates fundraising events to benefit Brookwood. Last year’s Pinot & Pie event increased awareness of Brookwood’s mission through an appearance on the Great Day Houston show and raised funds through the purchase of Michael’s Cookie Jar holiday pies.

If that wasn’t enough, several times a year, Renee also invites Houston area realtors and her staff at Morton Mortgage to come out and shop, have lunch and volunteer at Brookwood. The group works side by side with the Citizens in Ceramics to make the woven bread baskets that she gives as closing gifts.

“After opening Morton Mortgage, I wanted to find a closing gift for our home buyers that had meaning and gave back to the community in some way,” said Morton. “I have two nephews who are autistic, so Brookwood had meaning to me. I chose the handmade heart shaped bread basket for our closing gifts. After all, home is where the heart is!”
