Glitch Gifts and Novelties has moved from near the Farmer’s Market in Saskatoon to 33rd St W. The store is a culmin ation of a lifetime of traveling, shopping, seeking out and collecting all things fun and bizarre by Mike Erman, the founding owner of the shop. I have always enjoyed finding the most interesting little shops in the larger cities that I have traveled too and wished that we had something like that at home in Saskatoon. I have made it my goal to create the most fun and interesting shop in town, stocked with high quality, name brand novelty items from tiny hands and unicorn masks by Archie McPhee, to fun socks, mugs and a whole lot of other absurd and interesting items. We also strive to keep the shop all ages appropriate with witty and highbrow humour. Check Glitch out!

AIDS SASKATOON - 12 YEARS IN CASWELL HILL

Some of us may not know that our province has the highest HIV rates in the country - nearly three times the national average. In 2016, Saskatchewan doctors called on the provincial government to declare a public health state of emergency over our rapidly increasing cases of HIV infection, but funding to help combat the crisis has not increased. This makes the grassroots, front line work of the people at AIDS Saskatoon all the more crucial, and admirable.

It’s been 32 years since AIDS Saskatoon was founded; for the last 12 of those, their home has been at the corner of 33rd St. W. and Avenue F. Jason Mercredi is the Executive Director of the organization. “People don’t have to be HIV positive or HepC positive to access services here,” he says. “We work with anyone at risk, no questions asked.”

One of their key mandates is Harm Reduction, which means reducing the incidents of HIV or Hepatitis C transmission through preventative education,

addictions counseling, providing clean needles and condoms, and the pick-up/disposal of used needles. “We’re actually the smallest needle exchange in the city,” says Jason. “There are four others. We have a 108% return rate on needles, so that means we get more needles back than we give out.” From May to October, when there is no snow on the ground, AIDS Saskatoon does needle patrols, Monday to Friday, throughout the Caswell Hill parks and alleys. During summer, they employ students to walk the Pleasant Hill and Riversdale areas as well, picking up needles.

Evidence shows that supervised injection sites reduce the number of used needles in public places; as well, they prevent overdoses and reduce the spread of infectious diseases. I ask Jason how close we are to getting a safe injection site, like so many other Canadian municipalities have done. “We’re last at the table on that issue to be honest,” he laments. “Us and Manitoba. AIDS Saskatoon is part of a coalition of organizations looking at the potential of a safe injection site. It think it’s something the City and Province are going to have to look at because our HIV rates are so high. And it’s mostly from injection drug use - it’s been that way forever.”

AIDS Saskatoon’s outreach programs run the gamut from helping find affordable housing, to providing in-home family counseling during crisis, to advocation and support in dealing with the courts and hospital systems. “Last year,” says Jason, “we worked with over a thousand families in the city, and 764 individuals - all or our team is mobile and can go out to people’s homes. Our outreach program runs to midnight - that’s why neighbours may see staff coming into our back offices until midnight.”

At the front of the building, facing 33rd St. W, is the 601 Drop-In Centre. Including access to all support services, the 601 offers a friendly and safe space for people to get a cup of coffee, do their laundry, and have lunch. Lunch is provided free from Monday to Friday - some 50 people a day use that program. “The Drop-In Centre supervisor runs the meal program too,” says Jason. “We employ people who access our services to help with

meal prep, cleanup ... we’re training them for future employment. Eva, who runs that program, came through the program herself - and now she’s on our management team.”

Jason says they haven’t had a violent incident at the 601 in two years. “We’re proud of that because we’re working with marginalized people who have no voice. When somebody’s having a bad day, we may ask them to leave for the day, but we don’t ban them. They need these services. I’m sure some of the guys standing outside smoking look intimidating - they might be big men wearing dark clothing - but they’re big teddy bears if you ask them how their day is going. The reality,” says Jason, “is that they’re using because they’ve dealt with some really horrible situations in their lives.”

We talk about Dr. Gabor Mate, a leading expert in the field of addictions who worked for many years with hardcore addicts in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, and wrote several books on the subject. Dr. Mate believes addictions are a direct result of childhood trauma; in fact, he contends he’s never met an addict who didn’t suffer a huge emotional crisis or loss when they were younger. And his message is that instead of stigmatizing people with addictions, we need to be compassionate to them.

“A lot of our staff, including myself, are in recovery,” says Jason. “And if you would have judged us at our lowest point, we would never be doing as good as we are now. We would not be in the positions we are today.”

He says that he and many of the staff all live in Caswell Hill. “This neighbourhood is a nice mix of families, students, locally owned businesses which I love ... there’s kind of a small-town feel. And Ashworth Holmes park, are you kidding me - that park’s the best!”

As well, Caswell Hill continues to be a good place to provide services for their clients. “I think if people look back a decade ago to when we moved in, there’s a big difference in how safe this community is. We think it’s safer as a result of us being here. By giving people a sense of pride in the community, and a place of their own that they want to be a part of, we feel like we’re helping people re-integrate into the community.”
