Issue No. 11 Date: 20th August 2015 South Bunbury Primary School and Education Support Centre NEWSLETTER SCHOOL SPORTS DAY Our school athletics carnival is set for Friday 18 th September, which is the 2 nd last week of this term. It is a great family day and I take this opportunity to let our school community know so that they can make arrangements to hopefully get some time off so that parents/family/carers can come along and enjoy the fun. In fact, during the days preceding the carnival we have our 800m races, jumps, throws and tug-o-war heats. Keep a look out for further info for our carnival week closer to the dates, but start accumulating those RDOs so you can be here. INDONESIAN FREE DRESS Many students and teachers dressed yesterday in Indonesian clothing and colours of red and white. A gold coin donation for this event went to the fundraising for a new toilet block at our sister school in Bali. Thanks to everyone’s generosity we raised $578.00. Ibu Zulsdorf will travel to Bali later this month so if you have any items to donate, such as stationery, balls, games etc please bring them in to school. NEXT ASSEMBLY Our next Assembly is next Friday 28th August, starting at 8.50am in the UCA. The assembly will be hosted by Year 4’s from Miss Brunton’s Room 2, ably assisted by Ms Pethick’s ESC class. It is at this assembly that we will be acknowledging ESC Principal, Mrs Janet Stokes’ contribution to the SBPS and ESC. The Regional Executive Director, Mr Neil Milligan, will be in attendance to make a presentation to Mrs Stokes. We cordially invite all members of our school community to come to this assembly to help us celebrate Mrs Stokes’ excellent contribution to the education of all of our students. We take this time to wish Mrs Stokes all the best for her retirement and look forward to seeing her next Friday. BOOK WEEK I look forward to our school celebrating Book Week next week I hope that children spend some time over the weekend reading and reflecting on which book character they would like to get dressed up for Wednesday’s book character parade. The parade will be in the UCA starting at 9am and we ask parents to come along and view the parade. You are all welcome. While we are on reading books, it is a timely reminder for all parents to take the opportunity to read to their children. This is an invaluable opportunity to promote the importance of literacy. Last Friday, Kate, Hayden and Clay represented South Bunbury Primary School at the State Cross Country Championships in Perth at the grounds of UWA. There was over 1000 competitors in each age group. Kate finished her 2km run in 44th place (out of 237). Hayden finished his 2.5 km run in 28th place (out of 222). Clay finished his 2.5km run in 82nd place (out of 275). Thanks to the parents who transported our athletes to the event. Kate, Hayden and Clay, we are so proud of you all. EDUCATION SUPPORT CENTRE

Dear Parents and community members,

I will begin this newsletter with a heartfelt thank you for the support over the last week while we have farewelled our longstanding principal, Mrs Janet Stokes. It is a pleasure to be in the position of principal for the rest of the year. At that point, it will be advertised for a permanent appointment. Many parents will know me as I have been at the school in a range of roles (including deputy principal) for just over 4 years, with the exception of last year where I was deputy at Success Primary School near Perth. Please do not hesitate to come and see me in the office or at Kiss and Drop to say hello or discuss any

concerns.

I am also very excited to appoint Lisa Rynasewycz and Jez Ainsworth as sharing the Deputy position for the remainder of the year, and look forward to working with them in continuing the great atmosphere and commitment that our school is renowned for.

We will be having a formal assembly to farewell Mrs Stokes on Friday 28th August at 8.50am. Parents and community members are invited to attend the assembly and come to morning tea following the formalities.

On Wednesday Mr Ron Trezise from the Starting New At Golf program came to our school to conduct golf clinics for our students. The students from both schools enjoyed

―having a go‖ at playing golf.

Thankyou to Ron Trezise and Mrs Rynasewycz for giving our students the opportunity to participate in this great program. SNAG have some after school Golf sessions available for our students from rooms 10, 11 & 1 on Wednesday 26th August at 3-4.00pm, Wednesday 2nd September 3-4pm & Wednesday 9th September 3-4pm on our school grounds.

Please contact the school if you require further information.

As our last parent get together was so popular, another parent afternoon tea is organised for Tuesday 25th August at Milligan House at 1.00-2.30pm. Please come along for a cuppa and catch up with other parents from our school. There will be supervision for small children. A note has been sent home with students. Please let us know by TOMORROW if you are

able to attend.

Our school is ‘Nut Aware’

We have students with an anaphylactic reaction to not just peanuts but all kinds of nuts. We ask that parents

do not send nut products in

children’s lunches.

Virtue of Self-Discipline Meaning

Self-discipline means self-control. It is getting yourself to do what you really want to do, rather than being tossed around by your feelings like a leaf in the wind. You don’t lose control of yourself when you feel hurt or angry, but

decide how you are going to talk and what you are going

to do. With self-discipline, you take charge of yourself.

Signs Of Success

You are practicing self-discipline when you

Use detachment so your emotions won’t control

you.

Speak and act calmly when you are hurt or angry.

Get things done in an orderly, efficient way.

Create routines for yourself.

Do what is expected without people having to

watch over your.

Do things on time.

When parents separate

When parents separate it is stressful for everybody, but it affects parents and children differently. For parents, separation sig-nals the end of the relationship with their primary partner and a change in the parenting role. For most children relationships with both parents continue, but there are often big changes and strong feelings. Though distress is unavoidable when families break up, most children recover without long-term negative effects. You can help children cope by reassuring and supporting

them while they adjust to the separation.

How Children react: Sometimes children talk about their strong feelings, but often the way they feel comes out in their behav-iour. They may become anxious and want to stay close to their parents. They may be angry or get into conflicts with others more than usual. These are reactions to the sense of loss and powerlessness that most children feel when their parents sepa-rate and their family changes. Some children try really hard to be good. They may be concerned about a parent’s distress, or worry that if they misbehave the parent who has care of them will leave them too. Sometimes children become protective of one parent and blame and reject the other. Children from the same family may respond differently. Their feelings and reactions are

likely to become more complicated when one or both parents start a new relationship.

How parents and carers can help: Children are affected by the ways their parents respond to the separation. Getting support

for yourself to help you manage the stress of separation is very important. If you are coping, it helps your children to manage

the changes better. If there is ongoing conflict and hostility between parents, it makes it much more difficult for children. When

this occurs, children’s wellbeing suffers and they are more likely to experience emotional or behavioural problems.

Helping children cope

Reassure children that even though you will no longer live all together as a family, they will not lose your love and care.

Offer this kind of reassurance often and back it up with action.

Explain what is happening as it relates to the child (eg where they will be living, how they will get to school). Let them know clearly what and how things will change, and what will stay the same.

Try to maintain children’s normal routines as far as possible. This helps children feel safer.

Understand that children fi nd it hard, and acknowledge and encourage them when they are coping well. Provide extra support before and after contact visits to help children settle. Recognise that it is likely to be diffi cult for children when you start a new relationship. Counselling can help you learn

ways to make this transition easier for children and for yourselves. Helping children maintain relationships

Respect children’s need to continue their relationship with the other parent (unless it is unsafe), as well as with extended family such as grandparents, and support them to do so.

Try to ensure that visits to the other parent are regular and predictable. Help children to see the positives (eg two homes, adults not fighting) and to look forward to spending time with the other

parent. Avoid criticising the other parent to your children. Sort out issues with the other parent rather than involving the children

in your disputes. Seek mediation if conflict persists.
