Issue No. 13 Date: 17th September 2015 South Bunbury Primary School and Education Support Centre NEWSLETTER SCHOOL SPORTS DAY The annual Faction Sports Carnival will be held tomorrow, Friday 18th September, on our school’s main oval. It is a great family day and I take this opportunity to welcome our school community to come along and enjoy the fun. Preceding the carnival we have had our 800m races, jumps, throws and tug-o-war heats. Tomorrow morning we ask our students to go to their classrooms as normal, for the attendance roll and daily notices. The carnival events start at 9.15am with the 200m races for the year 3—6 students, 50m races for the year 1—2 students, followed by Ed Support races, Pre Primary races and 100m races for year 3—6 students. After the first of the team games and 400m races there will be a break for lunch. We welcome families to have a picnic with their children on the school oval with us. The afternoon session sees us complete the team games and then they will be followed by the relay events and the tug-of-war finals. Medal presentations and announcement of the winning faction concludes the carnival. All families have been issued with a paper copy of the 2015 programme. The programme has also been uploaded onto the school app and website. Parents and family are welcome to stay on and cheer for their children and enjoy the carnival atmosphere. The weather is looking good. Don’t forget to sunscreen your children and provide nutritious snacks and water bottles to keep the energy levels up. PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON LOCAL STREETS, BLOCKING NEIGHBOURS DRIVEWAYS OR THE LOCAL SHOP PARKING ON PROSSER STREET. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS School term finishes next Friday, 24th September. The school holidays are a welcome time to re-energise and hopefully rid all the winter flu’s and illnesses. It is also a great time to check your child’s hair carefully and make sure they are head lice free when they return to school. Take care and have a safe and happy holidays. I look forward to seeing everyone on their return, MONDAY 12th October. Our western quadrangle has received a make over the last few weeks. With the help of local artist, Andrew Fraser, students have painted a mural across the external wall. The planter containers are alive with vegetables and 2 fruit trees have been planted in large ceramic pots. To enable this area to be used by students and parents, circular seating has been arranged around the planter containers. This area is now a welcome place to sit and share in conversation or simply have some quiet time. P&C fundraiser. Wear your favourite teams colour or jumper for a gold coin donation. On Monday, 7th September, students and teachers from Rooms 5, 6 and 12 went into Bunbury to learn about important places in Bunbury. We visited the library, the War Memorial, the Art Gallery, The Pioneer Cemetery Memorial Park and The Wardandi Memorial Park. After learning about the significance of these places we went across the road to Wyalup Rocky Point Playground and had lunch. The children were very well behaved and we

were lucky enough to have a lovely sunny Spring day.

These are the coolest and smartest kids in SBPS,

Room 1, Year 4.

The following students have thoroughly learnt ALL their times

tables combinations. They have now entered the Year Four

Timetables Hall Of Fame. Together the students have been

practising each of the multiplication tables using playing cards

and a stopwatch. All of them can recall automatically any of the

times table. Each of these students can recall 20 random times

table in under 20 seconds.

Our school is ‘Nut Aware’

We have students with an anaphylactic reaction to not just peanuts but all kinds of nuts. We ask that parents

do not send nut products in

children’s lunches.

Determination is using your will power to do some-thing when it isn’t eady. You are determined to meet your goals. Even when it is really hard or you are be-

Believe what you are doing is important.

Set goals for yourself.

Focus your attention on what you are doing.

Resist being distracted.

Keep going if it gets difficult.

Ask for help when you need it.

Children are born curious

Babies are born curious. They want to touch, see, hear and taste everything within their reach. Toddlers and preschool-

ers demonstrate their need to understand their world by asking many "why?" questions. Adults can foster children's

natural curiosity by being warm, supportive and encouraging. Even though answering children's questions can some-

times be challenging and repetitive, when adults understand how important these are for children's developing sense of

self and demonstrate patience and interest, children's curiosity is supported. Adults' responses can give children the

basis for solving many challenging and difficult problems later on in life. Curiosity helps children to become confident

learners.

Being warm and supportive nurtures and develops children’s natural curiosity.

Curiosity leads to confidence

Children's curiosity drives them to explore their surroundings and try new things. From their repeated experiences of

seeing their actions affect their world and the people in it, children begin to see themselves as capable and having

control. This helps children to feel good about themselves and builds their self-confidence. For example, Libby may need

to start off playing with balls that are easier for her to catch so that she can see that she is capable of playing ball games.

Confident children are motivated learners

Children who are confident are motivated to engage in more experiences. They expect to have successful and positive

experiences because they have done so in the past. For example, Evonne may have successfully completed puzzles

with some help from her dad before being able to do it on her own. Feeling confident helps children do well in all aspects

of their life, both now and into the future. Confident children are more able to build positive relationships, do better at

school and become happier, successful adults. This is important in developing and maintaining good mental health and

wellbeing
