IntroductionThe co-curricular swimming program conducted by Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School is aimed at both Primary and Secondary students and is designed to meet the needs of the individual. Students are encouraged to see the program as a way to improve their swimming skills and at the same time increase their fitness level.

Under the guidance of experienced coaches and teachers, the students are able to train all year during School Terms. Two sessions a week are offered to Primary students at two levels – development and advanced. The Secondary sessions are conducted on three mornings a week. Opportunities are also taken throughout the year to test the students’ improvement and development. They are encouraged to participate in public swimming events such as the WA Swimming Splash and Dash Meets for novice swimmers (Primary and lower Secondary students), the Busselton Jetty Swim and the iconic open water swim – The Rottnest Island Channel Swim (restricted to Secondary students).

During the year students are offered the opportunity to attend special clinics, camps and trips to engage in sessions conducted by elite level coaches and other experts in the sport.

Carnivals and CompetitionsBoth Primary and Secondary conduct annual Inter House Swimming Carnivals and students are also given the opportunity to represent their School in competitions against other colleges and schools.

Special SwimsOpportunities are also taken throughout the year to test improvement and development. Students are encouraged to participate in Time Trials held by the squads, public swimming events such as the WA Swimming Dash and Splash Meets for novice swimmers (Primary students), the Busselton Jetty Swim (Primary and Secondary students) and the iconic Rottnest Island Channel Swim (restricted to Secondary students).

Rottnest Channel SwimSince 1999, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School has regularly had competitors in both the duo and teams of four sections of the prestigious Rottnest Island Channel Swim. Solo competitor, Nicholas Bowen (1999), was the first entry of a student from the School in the event. Since then, more than 150 students have added their names to the list of swimmers that have completed the 19.7 km swim from Cottesloe Beach to Thompsons Bay at Rottnest Island, either as a solo, a member of a Duo or a member of a team of four.

Dozens of community members have provided their vessels and expertise to escort the teams to Rottnest every year. Without their invaluable support, it would be not possible for students from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School to experience one of the major endurance swimming events of the southern hemisphere.

Camps and ClinicsStudents are invited to attend the Clinics which are held early each term. Using facilities at both the School and the South West Aquatic Centre, students are put through their paces by leading elite development coaches from around WA. The students are involved in a range of activities dealing with goal setting, teamwork and, most importantly, swimming techniques. See Downloads below for upcoming events.

Swim Camps and TripsWherever possible, students are offered the opportunity to attend a camp that involves travel to destinations across WA, interstate and internationally. Previous camps and trips have included Melbourne for the World Swimming Championships, Singapore for a swim against an International College and Albany for a swim against Great Southern Grammar.

UniformStudents are required to wear School bathers and School cap when competing for the School.

These are available from the Sports Co-ordinator’s Office on the Secondary campus.

All students selected to swim for the School are provided with a School cap. Replacements are available at the Sports Office.

Primary House Champions

Secondary House Champions

For more than four decades, honour and effort have played a strong part in determining the champion House for each carnival. Often the difference between first and fourth is just a matter of points and it is only after the final relays that a winner can be declared.
