Four Point ApproachWe follow the Four Point Approach- a tried and true approach to economic revitalization that is specifically tailored for historic downtowns.Organization and MembershipOrganization involves building a Main Street framework that is well represented by merchants, bankers, citizens, public officials, civic and com-munity partners. Everyone must work together to renew downtown neighborhoods. Fundrais-ing, volunteer development, public relations and networking events are examples of our activities.Promotions and EventsPromotion creates excitement in the downtown district. Street festivals, retail events and image development campaigns are some of the ways that we encourage consumer traffic in the down-town district. Promotion involves marketing an enticing image to shoppers, investors and visitors.Design and BeautificationDesign involves creating an environment where people want to shop and spend time. First impres-sions can have a lasting influence. Rehabilitated buildings, attractive storefronts, enticing window displays, clean streets and sidewalks, properly designed signage, facade improvements, place-making, art and beautification projects present an appealing image to potential customers, tenants and investors.Economic VitalityEconomic Vitality involves analyzing current mar-ket forces to develop long-term solutions. Sharp-ening the competitiveness of our traditional merchants, recruiting new businesses, creatively converting unused space for new uses, promot-ing downtown living and new business assistance program are examples of our initiatives.

Downtown Mainstreet, Inc. Our MissionThe mission of Downtown Mainstreet Inc. is the economic redevelopment and revitalization of downtown La Crosse. Downtown Mainstreet Inc., (DMI) is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1990 to help restore the downtown district’s role as the center of the Coulee Region. It originated because of a need for an organization to bring various groups together to complete the City Vision 2000 Down-town Master Plan, which outlines a vision and strategy for Downtown La Crosse. The City Vision Downtown Master Plan has been the impetus for much of the public and private investment that has taken place. Led by a board of directors, staff and hard-working volunteers, DMI manages and works to enhance, revitalize, and redevelop La Crosse’s original central business district.

In 2002, downtown La Crosse was awarded the prestigious Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preserva-tion for the community’s efforts at revitalizing and growing the central business district. Today, downtown La Crosse is the center of the region, a major destination, and an important corporate and human resources recruitment advantage.
