PARISH NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
Next Sunday! Come Help EVANGELIZE at the NYACK STREET FAIR!
We are looking for volunteers to help man our table on Sunday, Sept. 10. There will be sign-up sheets for blocks of time for as little as one hour, in the back of each Church.
We will have giveaways, information about the parish and each church, and some fun activities for children. Call Ed at 914-447-6527, Julie at 845-480-5142, or leave your name at the Rectory and someone will call you back.
Mass Time Change at St. Paul’s
Beginning on Monday, Sept. 4, the
8:30 am weekday mass will return to
its regular 9:00 am time slot.
CONGRATULATIONS to
all last-year’s donors!
On June 14 (World Blood
Donor Day) our blood drives at St Ann's were recognized
by Rockland County Supervisor Ed Day as the largest
faith-based blood collection in the Hudson Valley area in
2016.
With your help, we can do this again in 2017!
Our next blood drive will be on Sunday, Sept.17, in St. Ann's
School Cafeteria from 8 am to 2 pm.
As in past drives, we would appreciate your reply ahead of
time. You can call me at (845) 353-2424 to schedule an
appointment. Of course, walk-ins are always welcome!
Please tell your family, friends and (especially) your Facebook
contacts about the drive and encourage them to join us to
help save lives.
Thank you for your generosity! George Berry
“The overwhelming majority of lay people … will exercise their ministry, their calling or vocation, not behind the altar rail or within the sanctuary but in and through their respective occupations, be they workers, employers, bankers, professionals, or what have you.
“Some may think this is much ado about nothing. I do not agree. At a time when the church puts so much emphasis on the work of catechetical, liturgical, and other minis-tries within the church — and rightly so — we must pay attention also to those who work as Christians in what are sometimes denigrated as purely ‘secular’ tasks . . .”
— Msgr. George G. Higgins
Msgr. Higgins devoted most of his life to the cause of the worker and the labor movement. He reminds us of the connection between work and holiness, that all our work can contribute to God’s creation and the common good.

MASS BOOK & MEMORIALS
The Mass Book is open at both churches. Please stop by the St. Paul’s Parish Office or St. Ann’s Rectory to reserve a mass through December 2017.
If you’d like to bring up the Gifts at a mass for which you’ve scheduled an announced intention, please tell the usher.
You may also request that the ‘Sanctuary Lamp’ in either church or the St. Ann’s Chapel be lit for your special intention or in memory of a loved one. The lamp is a reminder of the Lord’s presence in the Tabernacle. The candle burns for 1 week. Donation is $25.

MEMORIAL MASS
Sunday, Sept. 10
7 pm
St. Aedan’s Church
Euthanasia is also sometimes called mercy-killing, medical aid in dying, or dying with dignity. The Catechism makes very clear that it is always an evil act. "Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of handi-capped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable." (#2277)
However, the Catechism also makes clear that "discontinuing medical procedures that are burdensome, dangerous, extraordinary, or disproportionate to the expected outcome can be legitimate; it is the refusal of ‘over- zealous' treatment. Here one does not will to cause death; one's inability to impede it is merely accepted." (#2278)
In some situations, drawing the line between normal and over-zealous treatment is difficult. At those times, we need to get good advice, pray, and trust that God will guide us.
But the main point is clear: suffering, even terrible suffering, does not take away the value or dignity of a human life.
Suffering is part of life in a fallen world. God allows it and uses it to teach us wisdom, compassion, patience, humility, and many other things, and to let us participate in His cross.
It's different for animals. They are not created in the image and likeness of God, like us. They do not receive the gift of His sanctifying grace. They are incapable of sin. So the sacrifice of the cross and participation in Christ’s redemptive suffering are not meant for them. That's why euthanasia is moral and humane in the case of a suffering animal when its physical condition has made its life unbearable or pointless.
But a human life is never pointless, and Christ has made sure that, united to Him by faith, no amount of pain will ever become unbearable. To die with dignity means to live with dignity for as long as God, the author of life and
creator of every human being, wishes to keep us on this earth, whether in comfort or in pain.
Euthanasia Okay for Animals, not People
This helps explain why euthanasia is so wrong.
