Isaiah describes a reversal of fortunes for the Israel- ites. The “darkness” metaphor might be interpreted as their oppression by other nations, as a perception that God has abandoned them, or as a more general sense of despair. But a great light has shone upon them and they have been rescued, called out of that darkness by God. Their joy is compared to the rejoicing as a good harvest; the rod and yoke of oppression have been lifted. Each verse of the psalm has a different function. The first is a hymn praising the Lord, the second is a petition addressed to God, and the third is an expression of hope. It is this hope in the Lord that connects all three. As in the First Reading, here the Lord is “my light.” the one who can dispel darkness and fear. Paul addresses some divisions among the brothers and sisters in Corinth. As he so often does, Paul preach- es about unity, both within the community and with the Lord. He wants the people to heal whatever disagree- ments and rivalries exist among them, they belong to Christ Jesus and are called to live in peace. In the Gospel, we find two different calls, John the Baptist is arrested, his ministry near completion, and the news of that event seems to call Jesus to begin his minis- try in northern Galilee. That is the area referred to in the Isaiah reading as the place where people had walked in darkness, and now Jesus will be the new light for them. In the second half of the reading, Jesus calls the first disciples and we witness their dramatic response. They leave their familiar lives for the unknown, and we are pressed to ponder that discipleship always involves trust in the Lord. How would your respond if called at this moment? What would be your first objections to following the Lord? What is your daily response to the call of discipleship?

Scripture Insights Today’s readings continue to explore the call to disciple-ship in its two dimensions-the call from certain situa-tions in life and the call to others. Isaiah describes a reversal of fortunes for the Israel-ites. The “darkness” metaphor might be interpreted as their oppression by other nations, as a perception that God has abandoned them, or as a more general sense of despair. As in the First Reading, here the Lord is “my light.” the one who can dispel darkness and fear. Paul addresses some divisions among the brothers and sisters in Corinth. As he so often does, Paul preach-es about unity, both within the community and with the Lord. He wants the people to heal whatever disagree-ments and rivalries exist among them, they belong to Christ Jesus and are called to live in peace. Eucharistic Adoration: We are all called to be Holy. As we have learned in the Rediscovering Catholicism book, holy is not a limiting thing. Rather, holy is a pure freedom to be best-version-of-our selves. This is something that we can only be with the help of God's grace. The Saints and our Holy Father, Pope Francis show us that that adoration of the Blessed Sacrament can be instrumental in helping us keep Jesus in the center of our lives. Adoration every Fri. 9am to 7pm.

The Lord is my light and my salvation

CHILD ADVOCACY

CASA of the High Plains, Inc. (Court Ap-pointed Special Advocates) is seeking potential volunteers. We recruit & train volunteers to go to court on behalf of abused and neglected children in our communities. We suc-cessfully advocated for 193 children in 2013. Unfortunately, there are more children that need an advocate to speak up for them to ensure that they receive a safe, and permanent home. CASA volunteer advocates are ordinary citizens who come from all walks of life and all ethnic and racial backgrounds. After they are trained, A CASA Advocate meets with the child and gathers information to report to the court. CASA Advocates represent and speak up for the child’s Best Interest. Apply to Become a CASA Volunteer by calling 806-669-7638.

Auction Items Needed

Please consider donating an item for the auction that will take place during the raffle ticket fundraiser on February 11th, 2017. Larger items will be sold during the live auction and smaller items will be sold by a silent auction. Consider getting together with several people and donating a larger item. One idea is to put together a basket of items following a theme. For example—”Night on the Town” might be a basket with a gift certificate to a local motel, movie tickets, and a gift certificate to a restau-rant. Donated items can be taken to the church office or you can contact Doretta Gerber. All proceeds will go to St. Vincent de Paul church. If you have any ques-tions or suggestions, please feel free to contact Doretta Gerber at 440-1891. Thank You so much for your generosity!

FUNDRAISER MEETING The next fundraiser meeting is January 26th, at

7:30 pm. in the conference room. Please come and help us finish up our plans for

this awesome opportunity to
