Be sure to specify “96th St Station Area.” New work zones have been established north of 99th Street in preparation for sidewalk restoration, set to begin there this month. All of the work on the west side of Second Avenue is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2015. With the completion of the work on the west side, sidewalks will be fully restored to 20-foot widths. Work will then shift back to the east side of Second Avenue for sidewalk restoration in January 2016. Construction of Phase 1 is 87.8% complete as of October 1. With the SAS project in its finishing stages, MTACC took a larger presence than normal (an entire city block) in order to generate excitement about completion of the project. To help generate this excitement, six-foot fence wrap panels were displayed depicting dynamic construction images, maps of the future Q service to the upper east side, time tables for stops on the new Q service, and photos of the tunnels that fair goers could take photos with, as well as insert their faces into, as if they were helping build the project. A big draw was construction equipment that helped to build the subway which was provided by our construction contractor partners at Judlau and Schiavone. Also adding to the festive atmosphere was music provided by YAZ Band, one of MTA Arts and Design group’s Music Underground artists. And of course, the Community Outreach team answered questions for, and entertained, more than 1,000 people, many of whom are now more knowledgeable about the Second Avenue Subway project and the benefits it will provide for residents of the Upper East Side, and beyond. New work zones have been established north of 99th Street in preparation for sidewalk restoration, set to begin there this month. Construction Update

• Surface utility work on the west side of Second Avenue between 92nd and 99th Streets. The work includes installation of electrical ducts, sewer lines, catch basins and gas main tie-ins.

• Removal of roadway decking and decking supports continues on the west side of Second Avenue.

• Installation of communication conduits at Ancillary 1 ( northwest corner of 93rd Street) and Ancillary 2 (northwest corner of 97th Street).

• Intermittent street closings will occur on E. 93rd, 94th, and 95th Streets between First and Second Avenues. East 94th Street will also be intermittently closed between Second and Third Avenues. These closures are necessary to support construction of the ancillary buildings and entrances and only take place as needed. Completed Entrance 3 concrete pour.

• Installation of conduits, lighting, and flooring throughout station area.

• Testing of facility power equipment and wiring for permanent power.

• Installation of escalators throughout station area.

• Installation of the metal paneling covering the platform service carrier.

• Installation of the station service booth at Entrance 3.

Future entrance of the 96th Street Station on Second Avenue.

The future 96th Street Station will have three entrances with 10 escalators and one ADA accessible elevator from street level. The construction in this area involved heavy civil/structural work for the 96th Street Station as well as tail track and connection to the future Phase II work north of 96th Street.

The follow-on contract includes the building of the station structure, installation of systems (traction, communications, heating and cooling, etc) and finishes. This work also includes the relocation of utilities and street and sidewalk restoration. This follow-on contracted will be complete Fall 2016.
