According to the minutes of the meeting ofthe 96th Infantry Division Association held inKansas City, Missouri, in July 1975, Haroldand Lorraine Strand, 604 So. Hazel Street,Glenwood, Iowa, 51534, were elected aseditors of the Newsletter. I
Strand had previously served as Sergeantat Arms and as Historian. '

Corresponding Secretary
and Sergeant at Arms of the Wood CountyCouncil of the American Legion. Serving as acharter member and President of theRisingsun Historical Society (a Bicentennialgroup) is another of his extracurricularactivities.
Rosters of the Association have been turnedover to a new caretaker: Virgil Below(381-M), 6723 CR No. 11, Risingsun, Ohio43457. He was chosen to replace ShermanDeckrow who had served in the office ofCorresponding Secretary beginning in thespring of 1972 and through the reunion inKansas City.
Virgil and Ruth Below had been married forseven years when his number came up in thedraft. Their first son, Roger, was four yearsold at the time. Shortly after his induction intothe Army on September 20, 1944, Below wasshipped to Fort Hood Texas for basic training.On February 28, 1945he left for overseas, only15days before the birth of second son, Larry.
Coming to the Division on Okinawa as areplacement, Below was assigned to themortar squad in his company. Later, he wentto Mindoro, then returned to the States fordischarge in February, 1946.
Below went back to his job at the UnionCarbide Corporation; 34years later, he is stillthere as an analyst technician. In themeantime, he and Ruth added two more sonsto their family - William (1948) and Dennis(1950).
The Belows are active in the Assembly ofGod Church. Virgil is a member of V.F.W.Post No. 421 in Fostoria, Commander ofAmerican Legion Post No. 36 in Risingsun

Deadeye Banquet in Kansas City

According to custom DEADEYES werecounted by the head, 482 in Kansas City inJuly, 1975. Undoubtedly families more thantripled that figure. Another statistic was
;impressive; 722 persons attended thebanquet, making that event second to none.
The pride of the old 96th Infantry Divisionshowed themselves at the eighteenth annualreunion. Rigors of peacetime survival did notstop them from making the journey. Theycame fr<;>mall over the country and a fewforeign places.
Other reunions have been larger. Themeeting that was held in Chicago (1968) stillretains the record for attendance. In 1973,the,crowd in Peoria filled up practically all of the

sleeping rooms in town, claiming secondplace for that site.
John Rader, Reunion Chairman, 5203Skiles, Kansas City, Missouri 64129had someproblems with the program - nothing big, but'aggravating. Among other things, he hadtrouble securing tour busses. There was ahassle with the hotel about serving the beerbust. Then the newsletter was late - so latethat the Spring Issue (containing a street mapand other pertinent' information) wasreceived after the reunion.
(Colonel) Dean Sterner, president, intro-duced his officers during the festivities on
, Saturday night. Directing a final remark tothe DEADEYES seated in, the audience, hesaid: "Give them a job, or I will!" > '

I am writing this letter on behalf of myhusband, Raymond K. Lowry, who diedJanuary 2, 1975 with emphysema andcongestive heart failure. He was proud tohave been one of the fighting men of the 96thDivision. Serving as a squad leader in 381-K,he was in the invasion of Okinawa on EasterSunday, 1945. He was evacuated to theMarianas as the result of wounds received onApril 15, 1945, then returned to the States inJuly of that year.
Besides being a retired farmer, Raymondwas a member of the First Baptist Church,American Legion, Agriculture Club, and theLeachville Community A.S.C. Committee.
His membership dues are enclosed. I wan,tto keep in touch with the Division becausethere are many names that I remember. Mythoughts go back to the time when I, as manyof the Army wives did, traveled the WestCoast from Oregon to California. We met andmade many friends while we were away fromhome. One day I met a recruiting officer who waswearing the 96th Division shoulder patch. I have been a dues paying member of theAssociation for several years, but slipped upwhen sickness and other tragedies hit myfamily. About 90percent of my time has beenspent in the hospital during the last two years-now in since March (letter dated July, 1975). Iwas saddened to hear about Arnold Lipke.

Although 'I ihave always enjoyed thereunions, I ~ill riot be able to attend thereunion in i Kansas City. I was not inIndianapolis last year because of a heartattack, but I overcame that in good shape. OnJune 23rd of this year I went back into thehospital for major surgery to have amalignancy removed. At this time, (April 1975) I cannot say forsure whether I will be in K.C. in July. Maybe Ican get Bud Bartzat to come with me.
This year has not been too good for me. Ihad surgery in January. When I was ready to'go back to work, a cartilage in my knee split,so there was more surgery. The doctor hastold me that two or three more months will be ,necessary for me to recover.Lloyd Dye.
*Because of family matters which havecome up recently, Harriett and I will beunable to attend the reunion this year. Eversince the meeting in Indianapolis, we havelooked forward to seeing everyone in KansasCity.
