IBS FS&OP Seminar

NSW SCLAA recently held a breakfast event organised by National Partner IBS. Mark Payne who was COO of Linksys, a Cisco

company, and is now COO of Yell/Hibu Group, gave an excellent presentation on Make The Numbers, which provided a valuable insight as to why ERP systems have f laws in the algorithms and how he corrected the f law to the benefit of the companies he has helped. The presentation was brilliant and is available on the SCLAA website. Thank you Mark for allowing the SCLAA NSW Division to run this event and also to Doug Braun, Suzanna Ng and Paul Nobbs from IBS.

BIG W Site Visit

A large contingent of NSW SCLAA Members recently visited the new BIG W Distribution Centre at Hoxton Park in Sydney. At 89,000 sqm, the Hoxton Park DC servicing BIG W; is the largest footprint DC in the Woolworths network. The f low-through design, 81 dock DC, is nearly half a kilometre long and about 200 m wide: you can actually fit about 11 football

fields inside. In terms of storage volume, the DC has the capacity to house more than 50,000 pallets within a combination of conventional pallet racking, drive-in racking, and pallet live storage within several walk-pick-to-belt case picking modules. The DC also includes a pallet live storage installation with the capacity to hold over 2,500 pallets up to 12 deep. The integrated logistics solution for this DC includes the most sophisticated array of materials handling and order fulfilment technologies, systems and software commissioned to date in Australia including:• The first Dematic Multishuttle storage buffer and sequencing system in Australia. The 29,400 tote capacity Multishuttle supplies

a range of lower volume, higher value split case SKUs to the first automated 1:24 Goods-to-Person (GTP) order fulfilment stations in the country.

• Walk-Pick-to-Belt Case Picking Modules handling slower moving full case picking which takes place in three, three-level walk-pick-to-belt pick modules, serviced by a series of interconnecting belt and spiral conveyors.

• Integrated High Rate Cross-Docking System where BIG W’s vendors pick, pack and label their goods ready for store. BIG W then simply brings the stock in, unloads it straight off trailers and pallets and onto conveyor infeeds that link up with the DC’s Crossbelt Conveyor Sorting System.

• Integrated Conveyors & Crossbelt Sorting System incorporating nearly three kilometres of conveyors which connect all of the various case picking areas to the DC’s Crossbelt Conveyor Sorting System.

• Voice-Directed Case Picking Fast moving full case picking is a standard ride-pick-to-pallet operation. Thank you to Philip Town, Logistics Manager, and Julius Angulo, Systems Manager, for conducting such a comprehensive site visit.

VIC News

2013 promises to be as exciting and eventful for SCLAA (WA) members as the previous year! At least one, if not two events are pencilled in for most months, with many

being site visits. Add to this the traditional favourites of the Golf Day and WA Awards; together with further breakfasts and sundowners, and you will see why SCLAA membership is such great value. The committee and key players in WA mix experience with youthful enthusiasm, so come and network with them and benefit from their knowledge and energy. Together with this mix, relationships with Curtin University, and the opportunity to promote and learn more about the industry at careers fairs, make the SCLAA the professional association of choice for those in the Supply Chain and Logistics industry.

Just a few months into 2013 and the Victorian committee have been working hard putting together an exciting schedule of events. The difference this year is we have been collaborating

with the LAA and CILTA local committee’s to expand on the networking opportunities and topics. This comes on the back of the two previous successful joint events with CIPSA in 2011 and 2012. There are also plans in place to run a different type of Awards function this year with entries opening in June. This year SCLAA Victoria will participate in National Manufacturing week in Melbourne, running from May 7th to May 10th, at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. Ensure you come along and visit our stand. As always we encourage you to join and participate in the wonderful community we call Supply Chain and Logistics.
