2 SupplyChain Review • February 2011 II

Looking back over the past 12 months there has been signifi cant change and challenge in the SCLAA Victorian Division and it is appropriate that I pause briefly to recognise the huge efforts of all our committee members and refl ect with pride that we have collectively ‘lifted

the bar’ on the quality of our events and activities. Our end of year planning session was particularly inspiring and I am pleased to report that we have a number of noteworthy activities already on the 2011 calendar. On February the 21st and 22nd, SCLAA Victoria Division is sponsoring the ALC Forum at Melbourne’s Exhibition Centre, where a bevy of the industries CEO’s will provide their insights and advice on a range of Supply Chain topics. All of this is supported by a showcase of the latest technology, products and services. For details and registration visit www.auslogistics.com.au Then on March the 30th and 31st we support the 2011 T&L Skilling summit. This two day event will provide a timely opportunity for government and industry to come together and discuss ways of attracting new workers to the industry, enhancing the skills of current workers and ensuring effective knowledge transfer strategies for the future. We have given our regular Logistics Lounge events a facelift for 2011 with new locations and there will be the usual high quality range of breakfast meetings and seminars, and of course our annual Supply Chain and Logistics awards where we recognise the achievements of many industry professionals and companies. We are also teaming with i2e (Insights to Excellence) to bring a whole range of high quality site visits throughout the year. The committee attended the i2e November visit to Murray Goulburn and came away impressed with the quality and organisation that i2E provided. You might want to visit their website to get a taste of what’s coming www.i2e.org.au

And while I am on the topic of websites, make sure you check out our own improved website www.sclaa.com.au which is destined for re-launch in February and is intended to be your ‘go to’ website for everything you need for Supply Chain. 2011 will see us increase the number of events focused primarily on University and TAFE students studying Supply Chain and on our industry’s rising young professionals. SCLAA Victoria’s Future Leaders Membership Manager, Prarthana Shyam has a terrifi c range of events planned and you will fi nd these advertised on our website. By the way, congratulations to Prarthana who was the winner of both the CILTA & SCLAA Victorian Division, young achiever awards in 2010. Continuing my comments on growth; As part of our initiative to extend SCLAA membership into regional Victoria we will kick off our fi rst regional committee meeting in Geelong in 2011. Watch this space and our website for more news on this exciting development. The SCLAA Victoria committee are looking forward to meeting you all during the year at our many improved events, site tours and activities so don’t forget to spread the word to your colleagues and better still, encourage them to become members or bring them along to a Logistics Lounge so they can experience it for themselves. Finally, our best wishes for 2011 in all your endeavours and enterprise. We wish you all a safe, healthy and prosperous new year.

Over eighty people from the SCLAA, Queensland Division spent their annual Christmas Party with a twist. The SCLAA members spent three hours packing 600 hampers for Foodbank to distribute to those in need this Christmas.

The packaging of the hampers last week was a culmination of eighteen months of work, over $25,000 raised in cash during the 2010 Queensland Supply Chain and Logistics Conference and generous support from many companies across the state. Each hamper is valued at $100 worth of personal hygiene products. 100 hampers were distributed through Mama Rene’s Foundation in Fortitude Valley and the other 500 were transported to Foodbank to distribute to those most in need.

The December event was the latest in the SCLAA (WA) Future Leaders Group program, and featured Brad Russell-Lane, Woodside’s Vice President Supply Chain, and Bill Antonace, General Manager Materials Management speaking about their organisation’s

$25m Supply Chain improvement initiative, May 2009-end 2010, and then providing career development guidance. When speaking about the Supply Chain program, Brad emphasised the organisation’s desire to ‘Maximise the Value from Existing Assets’, including Woodside’s employees in this category. Key observations that he made in relation to career development and individual skill sets were:• The importance of continuous improvement and process

skills for all Supply Chain team members.• The fact that the development path for every Supply Chain

employee is discussed annually.• The focus on Indigenous involvement.• The need to learn materials management skills from the

worlds of FMCG and Materials Management.

Bill described the Improvement program in more detail, starting with Value Stream Mapping across the whole Supply Chain. He then spoke about specifics such as the enforcing of the placement of requisitions with the correct lead times, the establishment of accurate inventory and catalogues, and the reduction of invoice and QA backlogs. He concluded by saying that the project had actually delivered $45m benefit to date; a figure likely to rise to an estimated $90m over ten years. Brad and Bill then offered tips to aspiring Young Professionals in the Supply Chain world, such as ‘keeping volunteering’, ‘taking opportunities that offer choices’, ‘being mobile before starting a family’, ‘being proactive’ and ‘continuously communicating’. Brad said that in his experience ‘no fuss’ people make fastest progress at Woodside. Key skill sets for Supply Chain professionals were identified as ‘analytical capability’ (for progression in the world of contracts) and change management capability. Both Brad and Bill fielded questions from an enthusiastic audience, before all retired for well earned refreshments and networking. All in all, another successful and well attended event from the Future Leaders Group, at which the enthusiasm and spirit of the ever-increasing number of SCLAA (WA) future leaders shone through.

The SCLAA NSW Division will be holding a site visit at Metcash on the 10th of February which will enable members to see voice-picking, scan picking, RF receiving and RF loading in action. Metcash is a leading marketing and distribution

company operating in the food and other fast moving consumer goods categories and the champion of Australia’s independent grocers and the distributor of choice for the convenience store market. Metcash has implemented a step change in the way orders for split-case orders are fulfilled. Picking high volumes of these orders conventionally is labour intensive, time consuming and costly. To provide their customer base with a better, faster, more accurate, reliable and cost-effective quality of service, Metcash has introduced a new approach to split-case order fulfilment.

LOGISTICS LOUNGE

In late 2010, NSW Members at the Logistics Lounge event in Silverwater, listened to Michael Cobcroft of Axis3P presenting on environmental sustainability in the Supply Chain, measuring carbon footprint and on-going environmental compliance. Improving business

efficiencies to drive revenue up and costs down, increased employee engagement, enhanced business and professional reputation and access to new business opportunities were discussed. The group heard case studies related to Linfox, Toll and several fast moving consumer goods companies.
