This is important for the SCLAA as we strive to increase membership, especially from younger members of our industry, who are embarking on their careers. As you know, we are all volunteers and to contribute in this capacity is always a great way of giving back to our industry. Well done and good luck to all the new Directors. We would also like to recognise and thank our retiring Directors on the SCLAA National Board; David Rogers, Steve MacPherson, John La Vacca, George Bearzot and David Doherty. David Rogers who has chaired the SCLAA for four years stepped down at the end of February as per our Constitution. On behalf of the SCLAA, we would like to thank him for his guidance, professionalism and inclusive style. David spearheaded merger discussions with the LAA, and we are well on track to make it happening, having agreed to the new Association’s Constitution, structure and name. David also saw the SCLAA form partnerships with like-minded Associations and Organisations like the CSCMP. David runs his own consulting business, and as such his tireless efforts provide insight to his contribution to the industry. Steve MacPherson, a Life Member, has represented Western Australia on the National Board for almost eight years. WA Division has gone from strength to strength, with an enthusiastic and proactive team that contributes on so many levels. Steve also runs his own consulting business, and his dedication and contribution could always be relied on, as well as his oversight and detailed analysis of matters for Board attention. John LaVacca has been an independent Director on the National Board and has used his industry and IBM experience to contribute to our strategy, governance and direction. ARE YOU A GAME CHANGER?

I have always been adamant in my own mind that Supply Chain as a mental model for doing business was a real game changer. I also instinctively knew that Supply Chain was not for every situation every time. The cost of

investment in building the essential collaborative relationships, and the enabling information sharing, would sometimes be prohibitive. So it is imperative to choose the right model for doing business in those particular circumstances. However, I am still unashamedly enamoured of the value generating potential of real Supply Chain in many business situations.

I am excited and enthused about the potential for people, plans and processes to effectively fit together across boundaries (silos) inside organisations, and across boundaries with external partner organisations. This necessarily entails appropriate sharing of the additional value generated from Supply Chain implementation. In my experience the standard of Supply Chain practice in Australia is very patchy with pockets of excellence and pockets of pretence. Many businesses claim to be pursuing Supply Chain but they do not formally embrace it in the organisational strategies or appropriately invest in the enabling education and development.

I am also vitally interested in development of ‘Next Practice’. That is, how will the practice of Supply Chain improve beyond current known Best Practice in order to provide innovative ideas to meet the continuing challenges of the globalised and digitised/virtualised world? I recently perused the 2013 University of Tennessee Report (UT), sponsored by Ernst and Young, on ‘Game-Changing Trends in Supply Chain’. It is an excellent treatise that you can obtain free on-line. For the purpose of the Report UT defines Game Changers as Trends that meet the two basic criteria of being extremely impactful on a firms economic profit and shareholder value, as well as being very difficult to implement. Further UT says Game Changers change the way that something is done, thought about or made.

Initially I was really bemused by the ten high level Game Changing Trends included in the Report synopsis. They were: 1. Customer service to customer relationship management. 2. Adversarial relationships to collaborative relationships. 3. Incremental change to a transformational agile strategy. 4. Functional process to process integration. 5. Absolute value to the firm to relative value for customers. 6. Forecasting to end casting (Demand Management). 7. Training to knowledge based management. 8. Vertical integration to virtual integration. 9. Information hoarding to information sharing and visibility. 10. Management accounting to value based management.

Nine of the ten items comprise issues that we have been grappling with and, or adopting over a very long period of time. In fact several of them could be interpreted as being part of the original philosophy set when Supply Chain first emerged. Virtual Integration is of course a current challenge and a legitimate Game Changer. Do the other nine represent Game Changers in 2014? To be fair to UT a deeper reading of the Report will allow you a more accepting view of their detailed assessments and proposals.

I am left wondering what the real Game Changers and Next Practice options may be? I am not wondering however about our apparent collective failures in Australia to fully implement effective Supply Chains where appropriate.

Is it a lack of courage to move away from traditional ways to adopt a new mental model for business? Is it the inability of the Supply Chain Profession and Educators to enthuse and excite people and organisations to pursue real Supply Chain implementations? Is it possible that Supply Chain does not, or cannot meet the emerging challenges for current and future enterprises?

In any event it is a very good time to: 1. Reassess and determine the basic essentials for effective

Supply Chain implementation and performance. 2. Develop and promulgate Next Practice options to meet

emerging business challenges. 3. Reinvent education to incorporate practical and essential

business needs for a globalised and virtual world. 4. Build a Profession with influence in government, academia,

and business on Supply Chain value and practices.

The upcoming Annual Queensland Supply Chain & Logistics Conference in Brisbane in September will be an excellent place to network and build an action plan for future Supply Chains. I invite you to take time to draft your Game Changer ideas and forward them to me at [email protected]

MEET THE NATIONAL BOARDMark Skipper APPOINTED CHAIRMAN MARCH 2014

Appointed August 2010

Mark Skipper has been involved in the Supply Chain Industry for well over thirty years in Australia, Asia and the Sub Continent. Most recently, he was President & Managing Director of RedPrairie Asia Pacific, a company that specialised in providing Supply Chain software. He has been a Company Director, since 1978 including a Top 150 Australian private company.

He is currently advising companies on continuous controls detecting business transaction issues, missed revenue opportunities and fraud detection. Mark is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and sits on the Board of a number of companies including a Registered Charity that supports handicapped Australian adults and children with sporting and recreational facilities & equipment http://www.primaryclub.com. He has his CPL qualifications in Australia and Asia Pacific through the Asia Pacific Logistics Federation.

Stanley Fan APPOINTED MARCH 2014

Stanley is currently the Logistics and Inventory Controller of CAPS Australia. Stanley has significant supply chain experience in Fortune 500 companies in mining, IT, engineering and FMCG industries. As a Supply Chain management controller he is focused on supply chain optimisation, cost reduction and business improvement.

As Current Director, Past WA Division President and Past Chairman of Future Leaders Group of the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia, Stanley has a strong network within and good understanding of key developments in the Supply Chain and Logistics Management industry. Stanley was recognised for his outstanding contribution to the SCL industry in 2010 by being awarded the Future Leaders Award in the Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Awards.

Stanley is a Current committee member and Past Vice President of the apicsAU WA Chapter. He has established several key relationships and strategic initiatives between associations (SCLAA, apicsAU, CILTA and CIPSA), tertiary providers in WA, strategic industry projects in QLD and professional industry associations in Asia.

He also represented SCLAA (WA) in an introductory meeting with the Taiwan International Logistics and Supply Chain Association (TILSCA) in 2009. Stanley holds two Master Degrees (Master of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and Master of Strategic Procurement) from Curtin University and a Bachelor Degree of Science in Civil Engineering.

Louise Perram-Fisk APPOINTED INDEPENDANT DIRECTOR MARCH 2014

Louise is a recognised leader of ‘people and partnership’ programs within business and government environments. Her experience spans public and private business, Federal and state government (ministerial, line and central); globally, nationally, state wide and locally.

Louise is noted for her roles at Emberin and previously as Director of Transform, a highly successful government and industry partnership and one of the most formally recognised programs in the Queensland Public Sectors history. She is also the architect of the highly successful ‘Inspiring Women’ program, which mentored more than 1200 women in Queensland. Louise’s ground-breaking work has been recognised with a host of awards, including the Queensland Business Review’s Queensland Businesswoman of the Year (Government & Not for Profit) in 2008.

She was also awarded the national Silver Medallion for the Advancement of Women in the Workplace for 2010 and Highly Commended in 2012 for Sustaining Womens Empowerment in Communities and Organisations. Louise is a Fellow with the Australian Institute of Management, the Australian Human Resource Institute and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and holds qualifications across multiple related disciplines. Louise is passionate about the transport, logistics and supply chain industry in Australia and supporting women working in predominately male industry.

John Eleftheriou APPOINTED JULY 2010

John is currently the Managing Director of ACG Global Australasia Pty Ltd and owner of Eleftheriou & Associates. As senior and executive manager John has successfully held key roles in: Manufacturing; Procurement; Contract distribution - development and management; Transport management - heavy haulage - express freight; International logistics; Wholesaling; Supply Chain Development; Inventory optimisation; Business process improvement; and Warehouse and Distribution centre design. John holds the following qualifications: Grad Dip Transport and Distribution Management, Grad Dip Materials and Purchasing Management, Certificate in Business and Finance Management, Accredited Innermetrix Consultant.

Danny Busija APPOINTED JULY 2010

Danny Busija commenced his professional career as an auditor and accountant with a rural stock and station agency based out of Melbourne. After ten years, Danny joined the Recruitment industry where has enjoyed fifteen successful years to date. Having started in Industrial Labour Hire, Danny became somewhat of an expert within Warehousing and Logistics. Danny then steered himself towards executive search recruitment, now specialising in the whole of Supply Chain.

Danny now owns his own boutique recruitment practice still specialising in the Supply Chain. Arguably Danny is one of the true specialists in this field. A believer in giving something back to industry, Danny joined the committee of the Victorian Division of the SCLAA after being a member for a number of years.

Joshua Holmes APPOINTED MARCH 2014

Joshua Holmes has been working for Strategix Training Group for the past four years, initially managing their unemployed training division with their Transport and Logistics Academies in NSW and ACT. Joshua is currently assisting companies with the development of their staff with specialised industry training in Transport & Logistics, Manufacturing, Food Processing and Business. Also consulting with organisations in regards to Chain of Responsibility, OH&S, Fatigue Management and ECO driving innovations. Joshua gained his knowledge for the Transport & Logistics Industry and others due to his previous employment within these industries as well as four years in Vocational Rehabilitation Services which exposed him to Employers from many different organisations and their ongoing concerns of their daily operating procedures. Joshua has a strong focus on promoting the Transport and Logistics Industry to the unemployed and the younger generation looking for a sustainable career choice. Joshua has been working with SCLAA over the past few years promoting events to non members within the industry and his networks, and has also been an SCLAA NSW committee member for a number of years.

Allan Jones APPOINTED MARCH 2014

Allan is a Senior Professional Logistician employed by Nova Systems, an Australian owned Professional Service Provider specialising in the provision of engineering and management services, providing industry and government with world class independent expertise in delivering complex projects and solving technologically challenging problems.

Allan graduated with an MSc (logistics) from the University of Wollongong’s Sydney Business School in 2006 and has recognised certifications as a Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) and Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (MCIPS).

For the last four years Allan has also been employed as a part-time lecturer at the Sydney Business School teaching supply chain management, operations management and procurement and inventory management. Allan is also a supply chain Ph.D. candidate at the same school.

Peter Hollins BA (HONS), MBA, FCMA APPOINTED VICE-PRESIDENT OCTOBER 2010 Appointed Secretary/Treasurer August 2008

Peter is currently the Financial Controller of AMCAP Distribution Centre (part of Automotive Holdings Group). Peter has spent his working life within the supply chain activities of the fuel, food and automotive industries. As a management accountant he is focused on streamlining processes to deliver better outcomes at lower costs and providing management with alternate views of information to facilitate operational decision making. Peter was recognised for his significant contribution to the industry in 2013 and was awarded Life Membership of the SCLAA.

Steve Ellis APPOINTED JULY 2010

Steve is principally a business Logistician, with detailed comprehension and capability in all of the associated disciplines. Steve is also a long-term practitioner in the application of alliance partnering principles. Steve’s particular expertise in supply chain management, physical distribution, inventory management, strategic alliance and employee relations has been developed from both hands-on and senior management roles.In these roles Steve also developed substantial experience in the strategy (supply and business) and business management fields. Steve Ellis started Logistics in 1998 following a career involving a number of senior positions in the transport, distribution and the logistics consulting industry. In his Consultancy career Steve has conducted or been Managing Consultant for in excess of 170 tasks, covering a very diverse range of industries and requirements. Steve was recognised for his significant contribution to the industry in 2013 and was awarded Life Membership of the SCLAA.

David is currently running his own boutique consulting business called Insync Supply Chain Management that provides an extensive range of supply chain consulting services to improve customer satisfaction levels, reduce costs, increase profitability and provide a competitive advantage. Prior to starting his own business David worked in the corporate environment in various senior supply chain management positions with blue chip companies David has a Masters Business Degree in Logistics and a Diploma of Transport and Distribution (RMIT), Diploma of Project Management. David is the Immediate Past Chairman of the Supply Chain Logistics Australia Association (SCLAA), Vice Chairman Asian Pacific Logistics Federation (APLF), National President of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), National Councillor for GS1 Board in Australia and Member of the Institute of Company Directors (MAICD).David also holds Certificates in Business, Finance Management, Change Management, Materials Handling Management, Training and Assessment and is a Certified Logistics and Supply Professional Asia Pacific (CLSP-AP). Why did you join the SCLAA?DL: I joined to the SCLAA to expand my network, meet some great contacts and introduce people to the power of optimisation.

AD: As a university student studying Human Resource Management, and only a 2011 high-school graduate, I have not yet explored the world of supply chain and logistics. Now that I look to start a small business that relies on international supply chains and logistics as an inevitable piece to my business-puzzle, I look to gain current information in this area. For me, the largest benefit of joining up with SCLAA is the access to invaluable information I can surround myself with – something as simple as the newsletter subscription which provides me with both relevant and current information, presented in an engaging way.

How long have you been in the industry and what are your areas of expertise?DL: I have been a consultant for over ten years. My area of expertise is Optimisation which is relatively new to business and extremely powerful in terms of improving supply chain efficiencies, productivity, reducing costs, increased asset utilisation, reducing inventories and waste, and improving ROA & ROI. Savings of 20%+ are fairly common.

NATIONAL JOB INDEXNational Job Index falls 1.1% in February Holding up well in difficult business conditions February has seen a further steadying in demand for staff in the sector with the Labourforce Impex Transport and Logistics Job Index falling from 99.18 to 98.12 in February, a 1.1% fall.

The Index now sits 2% below the benchmark set in September 2013, a fairly robust performance given difficult business conditions across the broader economy.

The Index suggests the pickup in business confidence following the Federal election has not been sustained.

Where permanent job opportunities have fallen steadily over the quarter the strength in temporary demand has been more volatile. Strength in October / November was indicative of the peak of the annual cycle, some softening thereafter was inevitable but job seekers should be encouraged by the pickup in demand this month.

MINISTERIAL INDUSTRY COMMISSION - ANNUAL SKILLS PRIORITY REPORT

The Annual Skills Priority report identifies the key trends across the Queensland economy and within industries affecting the labour market. It pinpoints the occupations that are growing and the skills required to fill them. The Minister for Education, Training and Employment established the Ministerial Industry Commission in November 2013. The Commission is a partnership between government and industry, creating an annual cycle to establish industry’s needs and use

that as a basis for directing government investment. The report breaks down Queensland Industry into ten sectors, including a section on Transport and Logistics (p68). The following is a summary of the relevant key points within this transport section.

The transport and logistics industry is a key enabler to the growth of Queensland’s economy. It supports the movement of people and freight, underpinning each of the State’s four economic pillars.

Between 2002 and 2012, employment in the transport and logistics industry has grown by a robust 3.0% per annum on average. Overall employment growth in the transport and logistics industry to 2018-19 is expected to average 2.3% per annum in Queensland. Road transportation, logistics and warehousing, in particular are expected to lead this growth.

In total, transport and logistics workers in 2013-14 are estimated to account for 58 in every 1,000 workers in Queensland, but these figures do not reflect workers in transport related occupations employed within different industries, such as truck drivers and warehouse staff in mining, utilities and telecommunications, retail and tourism industries. Looking forward, solid employment growth is expected for the sector as a whole, given that needs for transport rise with a growing economy.

The current labour force has 12% of employees aged 60+ years. This ageing labour force coupled with the lowest proportion of 15 - 24 year olds of any industry sector will be at the forefront of challenges facing transport and logistics businesses.

The largest occupations within the logistics sector are store persons and forklift drivers. For the logistics sector as a whole, the proportion of the workforce with a qualification has increased over the last ten years.

Technological changes are continuing to have an impact in the logistics sector. In warehousing, new jobs are being created due to the level of automation, which has seen significant growth in the last five years, particularly in large distribution centres.

Consultations indicated that up to two thirds of the transport and logistics industry is made up of SMEs. This creates a number of challenges for the industry as it is often not viewed as profitable to invest in workforce development and training due to the low profit margins of many companies.

Further, given the industry is highly regulated with compulsory training focused around compliance and workplace health and safety, most SMEs provide compulsory training only in order to meet legislative requirements.

There appear to be two very distinct market trends developing from a geographical perspective.

Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory have experienced a very significant fall in demand while the major Eastern seaboard states have all seen steady demand over the past five months. The decline in the mining sector is clearly now hurting Western Australia while difficulties in mining and the motor industry may already be dampening demand in South Australia.

Early 2014, Mark Skipper presented at the On-line Retail Supply Chain conference in Melbourne, on Optimising the Supply Chain for omni-channel retail, including the impacts on warehousing and transportation,

coping with the sudden upsurge in SKU’s and leveraging store networks for distribution and fulfilment. He was also invited by the Australian Government’s Department of Industry to present to the Governments of France, United States of America, China, Japan, Australian State Governments and International Energy Agency on targeting energy efficiency programs to small to medium business in Sydney. The aim of the initiative is to provide opportunities for participants to:1. Learn about and share experiences on designing and implementing energy efficiency policies and programs.2. Initiate and develop networks within and across industry associations, SMEs and government policy-makers.3. Contribute towards Australian and international dialogue and capacity-building on energy efficiency for SMEs; for example, the workshop will provide important input to the IEA’s forthcoming publication on energy efficiency policy development for SMEs.

Mark provided an overview of the SCLAA including its links to other industry associations in Asia. He also explained the work

completed to date in developing face-to-face training, webinars and on-line tools for energy efficiency. He also described some of the implementation lessons learned so far. These included:• Recognising the value of partnerships to maximise SME

coverage, awareness and interest.• Use a range of free media options to ‘get the message out’.• Keep delivery time of information events short and sharp.• Incorporate actionable examples including Return on Investment

case studies that are SME relevant (e.g. have a short payback).• Respect that SMEs often operate over very long hours each

week and therefore it is important to work around the times that suit them.

• Use webinars to access those managers that cannot attend at a specific date and time.

Lastly, he proposed some ways in which policy makers might further support SMEs in realising energy efficiency benefits. For example by presenting case studies with clear financial returns outlined and ‘thinking like an SME’ by consulting with SMEs to understand their unique needs and challenges.

The SCLAA and the AIP, Queensland Branch recently ran a technical lounge with Tanya Barden, Director Sustainability,

Trade and Innovation, Australian Food & Grocery Council, who discussed the latest State of Industry Report that was released in late 2013.

Tanya provided some wonderful insight into the changing face of industry and there were many questions at the end of her presentation.

The SCLAA and the AIP would like to thank Tanya and the AFGC for their continued support of the Institute.

According to the AFGC report our industry is under pressure from rising costs and retail price deflation. Consumer confidence has been subdued and overall economic growth is weak. Unsurprisingly, against this backdrop, the food and beverage sector grew by only 0.3 per cent in 2011-12; while the grocery and the fresh produce sectors actually contracted by 3.4 per cent and 0.7 per cent respectively. Employment across the industry contracted slightly.

However, food, beverage and grocery manufacturing remains in healthier shape than most of Australia’s manufacturing sector. It accounts for over one quarter of total manufacturing in Australia and almost one third of all manufacturing jobs. This year’s State of the Industry report shows an industry stabilising after sharp contractions in recent years, with some encouraging signs for the future.

Capital investment in food product manufacturing increased by more than 26 per cent to $2.5 billion in 2011-12 as organisations increased investment in productivity initiatives such as automation and other cost reduction programs. Such investment may also be driven by emerging opportunities in the Asian market.

It is widely recognised that the significant and growing middle class across Asia provides an opportunity for Australia to provide high quality, premium, processed and packaged food to Asian consumers in addition to our traditional exports of agricultural commodities.

The AFGC report shows solid export growth in processed food and beverages, and Australia’s trade surplus in substantially transformed food and beverage products has now increased for four successive years including 2012-13.

SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT FOR THE NEXT DECADE

Some 20 SCLAA members from SE Queensland had the unique and exclusive opportunity to attend a seminar at which Professor

Martin Christopher presented his views of the challenges facing supply chain managers over the coming decade.

Hosted by Associate Professor Peter Tatham from Griffith University’s Business School, SCLAA members were joined by colleagues from the University of Queensland, the Chartered Institute of Logistics (Australia) and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (Australia).

The result was an excellent opportunity to take a pace back from the challenges of the In Tray and Diary and to take stock of the key challenges: the impact of demographic changes; continued rise in input costs; the need to do more with less; sources of waste in the supply chain and to consider how a more environmentally

friendly approaches could developed, not least through harnessing technology in what Martin described as the 3rd Industrial Revolution.

In a thoroughly engaging presentation, Martin developed his arguments in a clear and logical way that was clearly appreciated by his audience and this led to an enthusiastic debate during the subsequent question period.

In short, an excellent morning that the SCLAA was extremely pleased to be able to sponsor.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN DIVISION

The last few months have been busy for the WA branch. The 2014 program of events has gathered pace with a series of breakfast seminars and the year’s first Future Leaders Group Sundowner.

Early February saw the Logistics Training Council’s presentation of its 2014 program over breakfast at Burswood. Jillian Dielesen, LTC’s Chief Executive Officer spoke about changes to government assisted workplace training and traineeships.

In late February at Seasons of Perth, SCLAA (WA) members were invited to the evening launch of STEP Supply Chain, a new Supply Chain Improvement and Training organisation, and new National Partner.

The latest Future Leaders Group Sundowner was held in late March at the Merrywell Burswood. A healthy turnout of Young Professionals and more mature fellow industry players showed up to enjoy fine food, delectable drink and productive networking.

In early April, a full house showed up to the breakfast event sponsored by RTO Solutions covering the revised Chain of Responsibility Legislation that is due for implementation in October. Paul Bond and Leigh Farrow from Main Roads spoke about the impact of the compliance regime for all members of the Supply Chain. The event was so well attended that a repeat session has been organised for early May.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN DIVISION

By the time that you read this article, the series of West Australian EEIG workshops will almost be upon us. Six three hours sessions will be staged in Perth and regional centres (Kalgoorlie, Albany, Karratha, Bunbury and Geraldton). The SCLAA (WA) team has been diligently supporting its national colleagues and the rest of the EEIG team in finalising the local arrangements for this program.

The workshops are significant for both the association (in proving its capability to partner with the federal government and industry in the coordination of a national program) and for the Small and Medium Enterprises (that by attending the workshops will learn how to identify and realise energy efficiencies across their operations. Further details of the workshops are available on a dedicated SCLAA web page.

The WA committee is also deep in the planning work for its major events in second half of the year; particularly the Golf and Awards Days, but also some major site visits, including scheduled trips to KMart (June), St John Ambulance (July) and AWH (August).

Committee meetings continue to be well attended and energised by the number of Future Leaders offering their time and organisational skills.

New committee members are always welcome; if you are interested, speak to one of the existing committee members at a WA event, or come along to a committee meeting in Welshpool (normally on the evening of the second Tuesday of the month).

SCLAA and apicsAU QLD Members recently had the opportunity to hear a wonderful and extremely informative presentation from Mark Altmann, Merchandise Planning & Inventory Manager Super

Retail Group- Leisure Division. Mark discussed the success of their Future Planning Program and Management Career Pathway program; which received a High Commendation in the 2013 ASCL Awards.

He presented a case study on what Super Retail Group – Leisure Division did to develop the Future Planner Program and the Inventory Management Career Pathway program to ensure that they could build and retain a talent pool suited to their business. The case study covered what Super Retail Group- Leisure Division did, results they achieved and most importantly a heavy focus on the people (training & education aspects) and cultural change required of such a massive project.

Super Retail Group is one of Australasia’s Top 10 corporate retailers and is listed in the Australian Stock Exchange.
