    WELCOME!

    | Rocky Mountain Green 2012

    Greetings from the Chair

On behalf of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Colorado Chapter, I would like towelcome you to Rocky Mountain Green 2012, the Rocky Mountain regions premier green

building and sustainable development education conference.

Now in its sixth year, Rocky Mountain Green again provides an outstanding selection ofspeakers, presentations, and networking opportunities. This years conference includes thefollowing:

Opening Keynote with Bill Reed, President of Integrative Design Collaborative

Closing Keynote Panel of experts discussing RTD FasTracks: Reshaping a Region

    28 GBCI approved Education Sessions

    5 Green Building Tours

Fun Networking Opportunities, like the afterhours bike tour of Denver

The success of the Colorado Chapter in furthering our mission is a direct result of the efforts ofour corporate sponsors and local members, who donate their resources and time to promotesustainable building in Colorado. This conference would not be possible without the supportof those sponsors and our volunteers, who have dedicated countless hours to planning, organizing, and running the conference. I want to personally thank each of those volunteers, aswell as Jennifer Whitton, the Chair of the RMG 2012 Planning Committee, and our Chapterstaff, especially Patti Mason and Sarah Fagin, for your tireless work in organizing this event. That work is the foundation that makes the Colorado Chapter the best USGBC Chapter in theUnited States.

As many of you know, Deb Kleinman, our Executive Director for the past four and a half years,is leaving her position at the end of this month. Deb has guided our Chapter through a periodof tremendous growth and many transitions, and we thank her for her many contributions tothe development of our Chapter and of this conference. We are very excited to welcome ournew Executive Director, and to embrace the next phase in the life of the Chapter.Over the next few days, please seek out every opportunity to learn, debate, and identify waysthat you can personally impact the built environment. More importantly, take this opportunityto meet those who touch sustainability from a different vantage point. You will be surprisedhow our shared passion can lead to a more sustainable future for everyone.

Enjoy your time in Denver and have a great conference.

    Harmonizing Life, Not Compromising Regenerating

Ecosystems and The Human SpiritApril 12th, 9:00-10:45AM

Sustainability is ultimately about sustaining all lie. The current trend o making products and processes moreecient is simply the beginning point or achieving this goal. In order to truly achieve sustainability, we willneed to redevelop a conscious understanding o the lie-giving processes that shape the places we live in ordeto reintegrate our buildingsand our communitieswith lie on Earth.

The process o creating our shelter, along with producing ood, has tremendous impact on planetary health. The corollary is also true; the act o building and agriculture can become healing and restorative processes. Byshiting the role o humans to participating with nature as co-equals and, even, tending the wild, we move rombeing occupants o the land to becoming inhabitants again.

The real meaning o development is to create new potential. With this perspective we have seen entireecosystems and communities begin healing the damage within 18 months. Learning how to sustain ourcommunities can be a remembering and rebirth o consciousness. This presentation introduces the practicalconcepts o integrating our technical perspectives with the living systems that support lie on Earth. This is not

as hard as it may seem; but it is a real change in the way we think.

    RTD FasTracks: Reshaping a Region

    April 13th, 2:00-3:30PM

Transit Oriented Development (TOD) can have quantiable benets to your residents and projects bottom line.RTDs Fastracks, with 119 miles o new tracks and 70 new transit stations will provide an unparalleled level otransit access or Metro Denver, reshaping growth patterns in the region.

The City and County o Denver and RTD have taken a signicant leadership role in both the planning andimplementation o TOD by ocusing growth into neighborhoods and districts near transit stations. StevenChester will briefy highlight TOD successes to date and uture initiatives in planning. Patrick McLaughlin willdiscuss their new TOD and Joint Development Policy and exciting developments along transit corridors. Lastly, innovative LEED developers George Thron, Peter Kudla, and Steven Cook will share successes and lessonslearned rom recently completed and planned TOD and LEED projects, such as Yale Station Lots, Vallagio atInverness, and 2700 S. Broadway.

The panel will also describe quantiable benets rom locating their projects in a station area. This session willgo beyond an explanation o TOD and ocus on implementation and the quantiable outcomes and premiumsthat a project can expect rom taking advantage o the regions remarkable transit investment.

Asian Tropics Lessons on the road to LEEDPlatinumGBCI Reporting Category:Project systems and Energy impacts

Innovation is playing a key role at the new $36.8-million DenverZoo Asian Tropics project (DZAT), where a biomass gasicationsystem will turn human trash and animal waste into energy. Thegasication system will convert 98% o the waste stream into85% o the usable energy needed to power the Toyota ElephantPassage exhibit. In addition, the 10-acre project eatures 1 milliongallons o water in a closed-loop ltration system, which increaseseciency by using recycled water. The new Toyota ElephantPassage exhibit sets a new standard or innovation and is quicklybecoming a model o green building excellence or zoos acrossthe country.Presenters:
