St. Peter’s Church Mission Statement
“St. Peter’s Church is committed to providing a family atmosphere for
people of all ages. We are a people who sincerely care about each other
and the community. We strive to be one people, bonded by Christ's love.
We look to the future for the continued vitality that we share today.
Through worship, preaching, fellowship, and servanthood, may we reach
out to all people as a witness to the living God.”
Three years ago I was privileged to travel to the Anhalt Region of Germany as a guest of the Church of Anhalt. You may remember that I traveled with three other Shared Ministry Pastors from both the Penn Northeast and Pennsylvania Southeast Conferences of the UCC and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod. It was a life-changing experience that brought me face to face with our historic German heritage. While Germany today is very different from the time in which many of our ancestors lived there, one could still imagine parts of our shared heritage.
Almost three years to the day later, our churches here in this part of Pennsylvania had the opportunity to welcome six visiting pastors from the Anhalt Church: five men and one woman. They stayed with us for one week before returning to their native Germany. But it was also a life-changing experience. Vicar Ulrike Bischoff, from the town of Dessau where I was based while visiting Germany, came to visit and preach at St. Peter’s. She made a lasting impression on our hearts and minds.
Our week began on Tuesday morning with Ulricke, or “Ule” as she is called, traveling with me to spend the day at St. Peter’s. She is quite the picture taker and asked to be let out below the Miller farm so that she could take pictures of the countryside. In this way, she encountered and introduced herself to Cathy Miller who then gave her a tour of their new butcher shop. She continued her short walk to join me at the church.
She was warmly greeted by Elaine, our church secretary, who shared with her an understanding of also having German ancestors in her family tree. I showed her around our building, explaining what ministries are housed here. She was taken in by the beauty of our sanctuary, by the beauty of the Mahoning Valley, and by the fresh air that our location offers.
We attended a UCC Mission District luncheon where Ule had the opportunity to learn more about the joys and challenges of ministry in the Lehighton area from the perspective of those attending the luncheon.
In the afternoon we visited with Dick and Shirley Haberman and Shirley’s sister, Ruth Houser. When introduced to Ule, Dick promptly greeted her in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect. They understood one another sufficiently to communicate, despite the almost 300 years of history that separated their spoken tongues. It was a joy for me to witness: Dick made Ule feel welcomed and at home by speaking the vernacular; Ule offered Dick a recognition of a shared heritage that
was now rooted in two different geographical locations. Time had not yet erased the common bond between our peoples. We continued into the house for a visit before sharing communion together.
Once inside we were introduced to Ruth’s caretaker, a lively and energized woman from the Dominican Republic, named Mimi. Her love and care for Ruth and the Haberman family was so clearly evident, together with her well-developed sense of humor. She was invited to join with us in communion, and she readily accepted. She reminded me later that we had met while she was one of the caretakers for Chester Frey.
As we entered into the brief communion liturgy, I asked those gathered to pray The Lord’s Prayer with me. As our voices blended together, I heard the soft and gentle murmurings of Ule praying in her native German. I would hear her praying in the same manner on two more occasions before the day ended.
We say that communion is a sacrament and it bestows grace. We believe that our Lord Jesus is present when we gather together and celebrate communion. I am not sure that in all my years in ministry, nor in those remaining before me, that I have ever or will ever experience the grace that I experienced in this one small, but profoundly powerful communion experience. I was seated in a small circle of people from vastly distant places in the world. But we were bound together by something so much bigger than our small selves. As I listened to Ule’s gentle murmurings in German as we prayed The Lord’s Prayer, it was for me like hearing the voices of our ancestors whispering in their native tongue down through the ages. I was reminded they are so much a part of the communion of saints that we sing about when we sing The Seraphic Hymn in our sanctuary on communion Sundays.
And as I thought about Mimi’s presence in our circle, I was reminded of the promise of all God’s people joining together in the heavenly throne room to celebrate the messianic banquet – people of every race and ethnicity celebrating their common bond as beloved children of God with a loving God presiding over the whole human family. As we celebrated this small home communion, we were united by our love of God and our love for one another and it was a foretaste of God’s vision for the fulfillment of God’s divine purposes throughout all creation.
Yes, communion bestows grace. And that was enough grace to fill a heart for a very long time indeed! May God’s name be praised!
In Christ’s love and service… Pastor Cheryl
