.SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus’ post-Resurrection promise, recounted in today’s Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus’ followers. Saint Paul tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church’s greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!” (Psalm 104:30). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

.TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm — Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading — In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13). Gospel — Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, the languages of the whole world arise to God in a Pentecost of praise. In some American dioceses, the Mass is of-fered every Sunday in more than thirty different languages, in-cluding the silent praise of American Sign Language. Fifty years ago, the landscape of liturgy was very different. It was grounded firmly in Latin, which is to the present day still the official lan-guage of the Roman Rite. Very few people were fluent in Latin, even though in those days Latin was far more widely studied in school. Nevertheless, almost every Catholic was competent in the responses and chants of Latin since it is not difficult to pro-nounce. The clergy were normally minimally competent in Latin, since much of seminary education was conducted in that lan-guage. When the Second Vatican Council was convened, all of the debate and daily work of the council was to be in Latin. In the first session in 1962, Boston’s Cardinal Richard Cushing con-tinually complained about it, and threatened not to return in 1963 if something wasn’t done. He convinced the fathers when he rose to speak in fairly fluent Latin in an unforgettable Bos-ton twang. The next year, he returned, but with a simultaneous translation system funded by the people of Boston. The ordi-nary everyday language of the people, the vernacular, had ar-rived at the Vatican via Boston! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CAMPAIGN PRAYER

O Lord our God, recognizing that all good gifts come from Your loving hands, we ask your continued blessing upon

our Parish and the building project we have undertaken for the glory of your name and the good of your people.

Bless us in our labors, and those who assist us in fulfilling our vision of a new building addition to the Parish Hall, that under

your care this endeavor may be successfully completed.

Help us to realize that the sacrifices we make will ensure the continued growth of your people in St. Rose of Lima parish.

Make us strong in proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel in the community we are called to serve.

We ask this through the intercession of St. Rose of Lima, our patron and the patroness of our Diocese of Reno

Our Lady of the Snows. We ask all of this through Christ Our Lord.

Amen.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Today, Pentecost Sunday, is called by many the birthday of the Church. Not only does the Lord imbue His followers and Apostles with the Holy Spirit, but He sends them out into the world to accomplish and further His mission. There are strong connections to the concept of stewardship throughout the

readings on this day, including the statement by St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians, “To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” That is a prompt to us that we are gifted in different ways, but we are to be willing to use those gifts to assist and support the Church and others. Nevertheless, in the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles is also a reminder to us about living a stewardship way of life. They are celebrating Pentecost, 50 days after Passover (which, for us, is Easter). Passover (as reported in the Book of Numbers in the Old Testament) was a time when the first sheaf reaped from the barley harvest was presented to God; however, at Pentecost the first fruits of the wheat harvest were given to God. This concept of giving the first fruits to God is at the heart of stewardship. How do we share the bounty that has been given us? The people of Jesus’ time were deeply conscious of all their gifts, including the gifts of the earth. Everything we have comes from God. This is a day to contemplate that and to respond to it.—

Weekly Offertory needed each week is $15,732 to reach budgeted amount for 2016-2017 Fiscal Year.

JUNE 23 XLT

Young adults, middle and high school students

(families too!) —join us for a night of Prayer, Mu-sic, Adoration and an en-couraging talk. Friday June 23 from 7:00 to

8:30pm at St Rose in the main church.

Quotefall Puzzle solving instructions—Find the common two and three letter words first. Do the columns with all the same letters if there are any. Keep going until you have found all the little words. REMEMBER—each letter is used ONLY ONCE. As you use a letter, CROSS IT OUT so you don’t use it twice. Each column has the exact number of letters for that column—don’t mix columns. After all the small words are filled in then it becomes a process of elimination and deduction. And hint—look at today’s Second Reading!

Check out our youth website: soulofstrose.weebly.com or visit St. Rose of Lima—Reno, NV on Face book—our Parish Facebook page to see upcoming

parish and youth events and photos!

Congratulations to our high school seniors who were honored at our first annual Senior Recognition Dinner! We can’t wait to what

God has planned for you all!

ISSUES OF PEACE & JUSTICE-By Rita Sloan There are two aspects to the Pentecost story we must not overlook or simply relegate to Bible history, be-cause they have everything to do with us today: recep-

tivity and evangelizing. On that first Pentecost, we see the apostles gathered together, still uncertain about what direction to take but cer-tainly wanting answers; they were open to, ready and receptive to the Holy Spirit. After the marvelous event, they were heartened to go forth and proclaim the Good News. Pope Francis reminds us that the Holy Spirit did not stop inspiring Jesus’ followers: “Our redemption has a social dimension because ‘God, in Christ, redeems not only the individual person, but also the social relations existing between men.’ To believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in everyone means realizing that he seeks to penetrate every human situation and all social bonds: ‘The Holy Spirit can be said to possess an infinite creativity, proper to the divine mind, which knows how to loosen the knots of human af-fairs, even the most complex and inscrutable.’ Evangelization is meant to cooperate with this liberating work of the Spirit….” “Spirit-filled evangelizers means evangelizers fearlessly open to the working of the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, the Spirit made the apostles go forth from themselves and turned them into heralds of God’s wondrous deeds, capable of speaking to each person in his or her own language. The Holy Spirit also grants the courage to proclaim the newness of the Gospel with boldness … in every time and place, even when it meets with opposition. Let us call upon him today, firmly rooted in prayer, for without prayer all our activity risks being fruitless and our mes-sage empty. Jesus wants evangelizers who proclaim the good news not only with words, but above all by a life transfigured by God’s presence. …” “How I long to find the right words to stir up enthusi-asm for a new chapter of evangelization full of fervor, joy, generosity, courage, boundless love and attraction! Yet I realize that no words of encouragement will be enough unless the fire of the Holy Spirit burns in our hearts. A spirit-filled evangelization is one guided by the Holy Spirit, for he is the soul of the Church called to proclaim the Gospel. Before offering some spiritual motivations and suggestions, I once more invoke the Holy Spirit. I implore him to come and renew the Church, to stir and impel her to go forth boldly to evangelize all peo-ples” (Evangelii Gaudium, the Joy of the Gospel, #178, #259, #261).

Find Your Catholic Voice On Being Catholic (3) The following is borrowed largely from the article “This is Why We Are Catholic” by Patti Armstrong, The National Catholic Register. (4/16/2017) … Some are saints yet all are

sinners. And there is always room for one more. There is no better place for sinners to be—for healing, and worship, and community. We are the branches and Jesus the vine; we cling to him through our Church, to keep his life flowing abundantly though us. To enter our Church, is by way of the narrow gate. Following Christ is challenging and we are always behind in the popular-ity polls. Regardless of misunderstanding, Church teaching does not restrict, but rather enhances our freedom. For while we are free to choose, even to sin, we are not free of the conse-quences of those choices. Church teaching, that is Christ’s teaching, guides us to the best choices with the best conse-quences, which leads to becoming our best selves. Life is not easy, and the Catholic Church cannot make it so, but it can make it better with consolations and grace and truth that never changes. And that is why we are Catholic. In Christ, Ken.
