Guild farewell blocks have always been small tokens of remembrance, well wishes, and friendship. The secretary's minutes from the May 1981business meeting stated that the guild decided to give a friendship blockto members who were leaving the area. The block would be the guildbanner's logo “flying geese”. The guild name would be in the center withmembers signing around it. This tradition still continues today.

In addition to the traditional block additional blocks were sometimesgiven usually coordinated by one or more guild friends. Members were

asked to make blocks for Hilary Fordand Linda Berry when they moved fromIthaca. Members were given the purplebatik fabric and adesignated size touse for Hilary'sblocks. The designwas up to eachindividual. A yearlater, when Linda

left, the instructions were the same only using ablue batik fabric to coordinate theblocks.

On occasion, Casowasco quiltershave given small farewell gifts, aswell. Here are the small hangingsgiven to Hilary and Linda who wereregular participants at Casowascoretreats. Members signed, someadding little notes, and the message,“Never forget the adventures at ourCasowasco sewing retreats.”

Small groups of guild friends havesometimes given gifts, too. “Monday Night Blue Birds” was a gift from theMonday night group for Hilaryand the swallows and flowersquilt that cleverly incorporated theguild farewell block into it wasgiven by friends when Elsie left in2014.

ITHACA FESTIVAL 2019 PARADE

The Quilt Show Committee decided that Guild would participate in the Ithaca Festival 2019 Parade to be held on the evening of Thursday, May 30. The application to participate has been submitted and the entry fee paid. I am just waiting to hear if our application is approved.

Once approved (let’s send out positive vibes), We are asking for about 14 volunteers. The 2017 parade was a lot of fun with about 10 members wearing a quilted item. The parade viewers

cheered for us as we proudly carried the Guild banner. Please consider joining in and bringing attention to the Guild as we sell raffle tickets during the festival.

Hope to march with you on May 30th.Andrea C. Gibbs and Katy Grace

QUILT APPRAISER COMING IN JUNE

The Guild’s Program Committee is excited that an AQS-certified quilt appraiser will speak during our program night on June 11, sharing with us her insight on what quilt judges look for in a show quilt. In addition to certification from the American Quilt Society (AQS), Linda Hunter is also a member of the Professional Association of Appraisers - Quilted Textiles (PAAQT) and has judged and curated shows and exhibits in western New York. Learn more about her at her website: http://www.hunters-stars.com/home.htm.

Linda has graciously offered to set aside time during her visit to Ithaca in order to appraise quilts for our members! If you are interested in getting your quilt appraised, let us know so that we can set up a schedule. The appraisals may occur at Lifelong, before our meeting on June 11, or perhaps at another location in Ithaca during the afternoon. We need to know how many spaces to accommodate in order to finalize the location and times.

The Show Committee Chair says that our longtime appraiser will not be available for our Traditions and Beyond Quilt Show this fall, so Linda’s visit in June will be your only Guild-provided option for quilt appraisal this year. Contact me as soon as possible if you’re interested in an appraisal from Linda in June: [email protected] or 539-6164. I hope to hear from you - and see you on June 11!Joanne Hindman

DAYS FOR GIRLS

Many, many thanks go out to Guild members who took bags of liners home to finish the corners. Collectively you finished 450 liners. That is fantastic! Also several Guild members came to the DaysforGirls sewing event in Lansing the end of April and sewed, serged, and had fun doing it. By making the DaysforGirls kitswe are able to keep girls in school all the time even when they have their period.Check out the DaysforGirls website for more information: www.daysforgirls.orgAafke Steenhuis

AWARDSThe Awards Committee was created to provide financial support for members of the Tompkins County Quilters Guild who demonstrate an economic hardship that prevents them from attending Casowasco Weekend Retreats, Guild workshops, or Quilting-by-the-Lake day trips. We have $200 in our budget each year. A member may apply for each type of award once every five years. Awards may cover:• 20% of the cost of a Casowasco Weekend Retreat for a maximum of three days;• half the cost of a Guild workshop;• half the cost of Quilting-by-the-Lake day trip. The Awards Committee has not awarded any fiscal support this year. We have drawn up a simple form to be used by those requesting an award in order to keep track of requests and grants. Please let us know if you wouldlike a copy.Respectfully submitted,Karen Baum and Cheryl Moore

COMMUNICATION We continue to operate without an official chairperson. We maintain the following communication vehicles:

• Website. Tracy McLellan has introduced Karen Kindle to most of the Weebly functionality, so that she has some back-up on updates and show matters.

• Newsletter. Cathy Miller is doing a great job of reminding people to contribute items and editing the NL so that it goes out monthly and is interesting and informative.

• Tompkins County Quilters Guild Facebook Page. Kristin Thompson is our ever diligent photographer, whoposts images from Guild meetings, Casowasco and other Guild activities. This is an ongoing task for which we are very grateful. Karen Kindle creates Events for major Guild activities, including, most recentlyour quilt show.

• TCQG Members Facebook Page. This page is use a few times a month for more informal communicationby guild members. Anyone can post here.

COMMUNITY SERVICEQuilt DonationsDo you realize that those ABC and lap quilts made by members of the TCQG include Kendall quilters? They are all donated for local charity distribution, and number at 145 quilts so far in 2019. The ABC quilts and premie quilts are donated to the following agencies who then distribute them to children needing a special blanket:1) Cayuga Medical Center Pediatric Unit2) Ithaca Pregnancy Center3) Golisano Children's Hospital4) Dept. Of Social Services - Foster Children5) Child Development Council

The adult lap quilts are sent to Oak Hill Nursing Home and Beachtree Nursing Home. And following in thefootsteps of our long time member, Marie Witzel, quilts are also sent to Quilters Dream Hopes and Dreams ALS Challenge for distribution to patients with ALS.

The receiving agencies send heart-felt thanks and appreciation to TCQG for the wonderful quilts already distributed. If anyone hasn't made a charity or ABC quilt and wants to try creating one, please know it will give special comfort to a person needing a little hug. If you want to help deliver these quilts, please contact Cora Yao, at 607-277-0844.

An announcement was received that TCQG was recently awarded $100 by Quilters Consortium of New York State for use in educating children at Cornell's Judy's Day about how to make a quilt. Anyone interested should let the Community Service Committee know when the dates are known for the event.

COMMUNITY SERVICE – Quilt Donations Continued:The TCQG has been asked to consider making drawstring laundry bags for use by Loaves & Fishes

members who can now do their laundry free downstairs at St. John's Church (Laundry Love) to have clean clothing while they have lunch or dinner upstairs at Loaves & Fishes. A pattern and dimensions for the laundry bag will be placed on our TCQG website.

DaysforGirlsWe have not met since October, and our next DfG sewing event will be held April 26-27. After the last DfG meeting I handed out 8 bags for “home work” to various Guild members. These members finished the corners of 400 + liners! Our local DfG chapter is very appreciative of our Guild members participation in thisongoing project. Aafke

Bags for the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger LakesWe have been making bags for the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes for several years. The bags get distributed to people who go to chemo. The pattern of the bag is on the Guild website and I have kits and corrugated plastic for the bottom of the bag available for members at every Guild meeting. Aafke

LACS Quilting ProjectThree quarters of the school year Sara Arnold and I teach quilting at the LACS. We have been doing this for 12+ years and I am already looking forward to the Fall when we start up again. I’ve been encouraging students to submit their quilts to the upcoming quilt show. I also participate in the Fiber Committee where students make various items such as pillowcases, aprons, microwave bowl holders made out of fabric and much more. Guild members have donated fabric for our various activities and we have been able to use lots of it. We received several large boxes of fabric out of the estate of Ruth White; we have been very thankful for all the donations. Aafke

GUILD PROJECTSThe Holiday Block exchange was presented as a snowball block with wintery fabrics as the center and creamy white/beige on the corners. There were approximately 120 blocks brought to the Holiday Party and multiple winners were chosen.

A couple of the block exchanges that were started last March were finishing up in December 2018 as some groups chose to continue longer than 6 months, which is the normal length of time.

There are no activities at this time as it is expected that guild members are busy finishing up quilts for the upcoming October quilt show. Respectfully submitted, Sue Romanczuk

LIBRARYSince January, the library has received book donations of “Five Minute Quilt Blocks” by Suzanne McNeill and several issues of “Quiltfolk,” a quarterly publication. The latest issue of Quiltfolk, titled “Vermont”, has arrived and is now available in the library. The library catalog has been updated and is available on the guild website. There is also a paper copy of the catalog on the inside door of the library cupboard for members' use. For ease of locating new books, they are nowmarked with a silver sticker and are located on the bottom shelf of the cupboard, after the reference section, for the duration of the calendar year they are acquired. Recently we have had inquiries about books on miniature quilts and bargello quilts and anticipate purchasing several books on these topics once the budget is approved. Please do let a committee member know if there is something you would like to see added to our collection. We are striving to keep the library a relevant resource forthe guild. Respectfully submitted, Joan Geiszler

MEMBERSHIPAs of this date, we have 98 members of record. Sixteen members did not renew for 2019, although

all were contacted several times. We have 7 “new” members, some rejoining after an absence of a year or more and some joining as initial new members.

A new membership form was created and is available on the guild website. The new form adds a checkbox for renewing members which allows them to skip re-entering contact information if nothing has changed. Also all records of membership have been saved to the “cloud” for easier sharing between chairperson, membership committee members and other guild committees who require up-to-date membership information. Files will continue to be updated and saved in a computer file as well.

QUILT SHOWWith the exception of November and December, we have been meeting monthly since September. We generate minutes for each of our meetings and post them on the members only section of our website. We have also beencontributing items to the guild newsletter since January. So this will be a brief update with further details available via the minutes.Treasurer: Expenses have been a little over $337.20 (show quilt, register for Ithaca Festival) and revenue $3,370.00 (vendors and sale of prior year quilt). Vendors: Our vendor spaces are almost completely subscribed and paid for, with a mix of previous and new vendors. To further encourage patronage of our vendors, we will be putting together a raffle basket with tickets to be distributed by vendors for every $10 spent at their booth.Publicity: Steffi has generated templates for and ordered raffle tickets and postcards. We will also be producing a small poster and lawn signs. We are investigating selling ad space in our program.New Features: We have a number of new or expanded features for this quilt show, including mini-workshops and trunk shows to be convened by guild members. Space permitting, we will continue to have our previous special exhibits: featured quilter, memorial exhibits, Guild projects, and sales: Second Hand Rose, used books, and our silent auction.Awards: Viewers choice award voting will continue on Sunday until 2 pm, with awards announced at ~4 pm. A new set of Awards of Excellence will be given. They are listed on the entry instructions on the website. We hope to be able to announce them with ribbons when the show opens on Saturday morning. Social Media: The show section of our website has been updated, with the list of vendors, show features, and updated entry instructions. A Facebook event has been created and will be updated once entries open on April 23. Karen and Casey, Show Chairs

SOCIALWell Being of Guild MembersIn the past half a year I have made numerous phone calls to different Guild members to inquire about their health, the health of a family member, etc. Cards were sent out and visits to the hospital, nursing home and homes were made. The cards made by our Guild members are very much appreciated. Aafke

Birthday CalendarEvery month birthdays of Guild members are posted in the Newsletter. I also started sending an email on behalf of the Guild to the members on their birthday. Aafke

Second Meeting of the Month ProgramKathy Carman and Aafke Steenhuis have organized a program for the second meeting of the month. Most of the time we have a Show-&-Tell theme; we put the plan in the Newsletter and ask members to contribute quilts. Usually an email the week before the 2nd meeting follows to remind members of the subject. We have had a great turn-out of quilts and Guild members have been very enthusiastic about it. Attendance of the second meeting is about even with attendance of the first meeting of the month.November: Animals December: 1 meeting only January: Birds February: Cancelled because of weather March: Solid (or mostly solid) quilts

TREASURYWe recorded receipt of a $100 Community Service grant from the Quilters Consortium of New York State

in support of a Judy's Day project, to be managed by Cora Yao.There are no unexpected expenses so far this year. Future reports will include expense-to-budget

comparisons, but as of first quarter, most budget items have yet to incur expense. There is one expense item charged to contingency; this represents an unbudgeted printing expense from 2018.
