BROADCAST INFORMATION

Chicago leads the all-time regular season series at 6-4 (.600). The two teams have met in the preseason nine times with Kansas City holding a 7-2 (.778) advantage. In the fi ve games played at Soldier Field, the Bears lead the series 4-1 (.800) and have won the last two contests in the Windy City. The Chiefs lone win at Chicago was the fi nal game of the ’90 season. Kansas City posted a 21-10 victory at Chicago (12/29/90) to advance to the playoffs as K Nick Lowery had fi ve fi eld goals.

In Kansas City’s last victory vs. Chicago (12/28/03), RB Priest Holmes recorded a pair of NFL records. In the 31-3 win, he scored his 27th rushing touchdown of the 2003 season. That total was the highest single-season rushing TD total in NFL history and the highest seasonal total in league annals for total touchdowns. The Chiefs posted a 66-24 win in the preseason vs. Chicago (8/23/67), the fi rst contest between the two clubs.

Kansas City makes its fi rst trip to Chicago on Sunday since the 2007 season. The Chiefs suffered a heart-breaking 13-9 loss vs. Pittsburgh (11/27) on Sunday Night Football in a game that featured big defensive plays throughout the contest. The loss dropped the club’s record to 4-7. This marks Chicago’s third game of a four-game series with AFC West teams. The Bears have split their two games with the AFC West so far in 2011. The club posted a 31-20 win vs. San Diego (11/20), but lost starting QB Jay Cutler to a hand injury. The next week, Chicago lost 25-20 at Oakland (11/27) as QB Caleb Hanie made his fi rst career start. The Kansas City defense is permitting 19.5 points per game dating back to Oct. 2. That mark ranks eighth in the AFC and 11th in the NFL. During that eight-game stretch, the Chiefs have only allowed fi ve rushing touchdowns. The club has intercepted 10 passes over that timeframe. LB Derrick Johnson leads the Chiefs defense with 123 tackles and is on pace for 179 stops, a total that would be the highest single-season mark in team history. LB Tamba Hali has a team-high 7.0 sacks to tie for sixth in the AFC. Over the past two seasons, the Chiefs linebacker has tallied 21.5 sacks. The club has returned two interceptions for touchdowns, including one by CB Brandon Flowers and one by S Kendrick Lewis. WR Dwayne Bowe leads the club with 55 receptions for 819 yards (14.9 avg.) with four touchdowns. He is on pace for a career-high 1,191 receiving yards. He needs 181 more yards to record his third career 1,000-yard season and his second-consecutive such campaign, becoming only the fourth player in team history to accomplish that feat. K Ryan Succop has made 15 consecutive fi eld goals, the longest streak in his career. That streak also ties for the fi fth-longest in team history. CB Javier Arenas is third in the NFL with a 14.8-yard punt return average. Kansas City continues its two-game road trip next week when the team travels to New York to play the Jets (12/11). The Chiefs will return home to host Green Bay on Dec. 18. Chicago concludes its four-game AFC West series with a trip to Denver on Dec. 11.

Lovie Smith was named the 13th head coach in Bears history on Jan. 15, 2004. He has led the Bears to the playoffs on three different occasions. A year ago Chicago fi nished the regular season with a 11-5 mark and advanced to the NFC Championship Game vs. Green Bay (1/23/11). Smith has led the Bears to two NFC Championship Games and an appearance in Super Bowl XLI. Smith was named NFL Coach of the Year by AP in 2005 after leading the Bears to their fi rst division title since

2001. Born on May 8, 1958, the Big Sandy, Texas native entered the NFL coaching ranks as Tampa Bay’s LBs coach (’96-00). He then served as defensive coordinator in St. Louis (2001-03). In his inaugural year with St. Louis, the Rams ranked third in the NFL in total defense (279.4 ppg) and was seventh in scoring defense (17.1 ppg) as the club went 14-2 and earned a berth in Super Bowl XXXVI. Smith has spent 28 years coaching at the collegiate and professional levels. He enjoyed collegiate coaching stints at Tulsa (’83-86), Wisconsin (’87), Arizona State (’88-91), Kentucky (’92), Tennessee (’93-94) and Ohio State (’95). Smith was a two-time All-America pick and three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference choice as a defensive back at Tulsa.

Todd Haley was named the 11th head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 6, 2009 and is in his third year leading the Chiefs. Haley is in his 17th season in the NFL in 2011 and his 15th season as an NFL coach after beginning his career as a scouting assistant with the N.Y. Jets in ’95. Haley led the Chiefs to a 10-6 record in 2010 after posting a 4-12 mark in 2009 for the best single-season turnaround in franchise history. Kansas City won the AFC West Championship

as Haley was named the NFL Coach of the Year by the NFL Alumni Association and the AFC Coach of the Year by the Committee of 101. Haley joined the Chiefs after a two-year stint as Arizona’s offensive coordinator (2007-08), helping the Cardinals reach Super Bowl XLIII as the club won its first division title since ’75. He has made playoff appearances with five different NFL teams. He served as passing game coordinator/WRs coach under Bill Parcells with Dallas (2004-06) after beginning his career under Parcells with the N.Y. Jets (’97-00). He also served as WRs coach with Chicago (2001-03). Born on Feb. 28, 1967, Haley grew up in Upper St. Clair, Pa. He is the son of long-time NFL personnel executive Dick Haley, who helped build the Steelers Super Bowl teams of the ’70s. He was a ’91 graduate of the University of North Florida.

NFL COACHING CLASS OF 2009

• Of the nine head coaches hired in 2009, only Jim Caldwell (Colts) and Rex Ryan (Jets) own more victories in their fi rst three seasons than Todd Haley. The Chiefs are one of three teams to make a playoff appearance of the nine teams that made a head coaching change for the 2009 season.

PLAYING SPECIAL

On Sunday at Chicago (12/4) don’t leave your seat on fourth down as a team drops back to punt. The action might be just beginning. Kansas City CB Javier Arenas has compiled a 14.8-yard punt return average on the season to lead the AFC and rank third in the NFL. As a team the Chiefs are averaging 14.1-yards per return to rank fourth in league. One of the teams ahead of the Chiefs is Chicago who employs dynamic WR Devin Hester. The Bears are fi rst in the NFL with a 18.9-yard punt return average. Currently Hester has the top mark in the NFL with a 19.4-yard average. Chicago is equally profi cient at stopping its opponents punt return unit. The Bears are allowing only 3.4-yards per punt return to lead the NFL. Chicago has allowed 85 punt return yards, the second-fewest allowed. Only New Orleans (71) has allowed fewer. Kansas City is 25th in the NFL allowing 12.7-yards per punt return. The Chiefs have forced a league-high 19 fair catches on the season. Arenas entered the NFL as the second of the Chiefs two selections in the second-round (50th overall) of the 2010 draft. C Casey Wiegmann has started 170 consecutive games dating back to a contest vs. the N.Y. Giants (9/23/01). It ranks as the longest active streak by an offensive lineman in the NFL. Wiegmann’s streak started with eight seasons in Kansas City (2001-07) before he spent two campaigns in Denver (2008-09). He returned to Kansas City in 2010. Perhaps even more impressive is his streak of 10,838 consecutive snaps played. Wiegmann has opened 138 games in a Chiefs uniform, the sixth-highest total by an offensive lineman in Chiefs history. CB Brandon Carr has started 59 consecutive games to begin his career. His streak dates back to a contest at New England (9/7/08) after the club opened in its nickel package. It is the second-longest streak by a player to begin their career in Chiefs history. RB Thomas Jones has played in 98 consecutive games dating back to a contest vs. Carolina (11/20/05). During that time he has rushed 1,710 times for 6,810 yards (4.0 avg.) with 43 touchdowns.

GROUND GAME

A deciding factor in the outcome of the game could come down to who controls the ground game. Kansas City is averaging 121.4 rushing yards per game in 2011 to rank fi fth in the AFC and 10th in the NFL. RB Jackie Battle leads the team with 456 yards on the ground. Prior to last weekend’s game vs. Pittsburgh (11/27), Battle had compiled 287 yards after contact. That means 65.8% of his yards after 10 games came after initial contact. Behind the running of RB Matt Forte, the Bears are averaging 121.8 rushing yards per game. That total ranks fi fth in the NFC and ninth in the NFL. Interestingly, Chicago is actually rushing better on the road than it is at home. In six home contests, the Bears have recorded 645 rushing yards, an average of 107.5 rushing ypg. That mark is tied for 22nd in the NFL. On the defensive side of the ball, Chicago is permitting 98.6 rushing yards per game to stand eighth in the NFL. Opponents are averaging 21.1 carries per game against the Bears in 2011, the lowest total in the NFL. Green Bay and San Francisco are tied for second in the league by permitting 21.6 rushing attempts per game. Chicago has only allowed seven touchdowns on the ground, tying for the 10th-fewest in the league. In the friendly confi nes of Soldier Field the Bears are not even allowing opponents to top the 100-yard barrier. The Bears are allowing 94.0 rushing ypg at home to rank 10th in the NFL.

PROTECTING THE FOOTBALL

In Kansas City’s four wins in 2011, the club committed six giveaways (two fumbles/four interceptions). Meanwhile in its seven losses this season, the club has 17 giveaways (six fumbles/11 interceptions). On Sunday, protecting the football will take on even more importance. Kansas City is one of just four teams that have not committed a turnover in at least four games. Under Head Coach Todd Haley, the Chiefs are 7-7 when not committing a turnover. The Chiefs have forced their opponents to turn the ball over 16 times. Those 16 takeaways are tied for the 14th-most in the NFL this season. Kansas City has had a takeaway in eight of its 11 contests in 2011. Last week vs. Pittsburgh (11/27), the Chiefs defense continued its trend of taking the ball away from opponents. Kansas City forced a fumble on the Steelers opening drive that was recovered in the end zone. Later in the game, CB Travis Daniels added his second interception of the season, the 14th for the team. Kansas City is on pace for 20 interceptions which would be the club’s most pickoffs since registering 25 in 2003. Chicago has continued that scoring pace into the second quarter by adding 101 points. Those 101 points rank fourth in the NFL. Only Oakland (121), Philadelphia (106) and Green Bay (102) have scored more. In the fi rst half of games, Chicago has scored 171 points, ranking third in the league. Opponents have averaged 32.2 carries per game and 133.0 rushing yards per game in those contests. Chicago has permitted 33 rushing TDs over that time.

MORE RUSHING NOTES

LB Derrick Johnson has 123 tackles (87 solo) after the fi rst 11 games in 2011. He is currently on pace for 179 stops on the season, that mark would rank as the highest seasonal total in team history. He had a career-high 147 tackles a year ago. The seventh-year pro has recorded 100+ tackles in back-to-back seasons for the fi rst time in his career. During his career he has tallied 694 tackles, ranking ninth in team history. He is one of 11 players in Chiefs history to record 600 or more tackles in their career. Johnson needs six more tackles top the 700-tackle barrier, becoming the ninth member in Chiefs history to join that club.

MOVING UP THE TACKLE CHART

The Kansas City kickoff coverage unit continues to force its opponents to travel a long fi eld. The Chiefs have allowed a 19.6-yard kickoff average, the best mark in the NFL. Kansas City has held its opponents starting position to the 20.7-yard line after a kickoff, ranking fi fth in the NFL. The Chiefs held Pittsburgh a 19.3-yard kickoff return average. Chicago is averaging 22.7-yards per kickoff return, ranking 22nd in the NFL. But when it comes to starting position after kickoff, the Bears are fi fth in the NFL by beginning their drives at the 23.8-yard line. Only 24.6% of Chicago’s opponents kickoffs went for a touchback, the second-lowest percentage in the NFL. In fact, the Bears have only had 56.1% of opponents kickoffs reach the end zone against them, the lowest percentage in the league.

Kansas City’s defense kept the Chiefs in the game throughout the day by forcing three Chicago turnovers, but it wasn’t enough as the Chiefs dropped a 20-10 decision at Soldier Field. A special teams TD and a bit of trickery helped the Bears build a 17-7 halftime advantage as Chicago never looked back.

The Kansas City defense made its first statement on the Bears second offensive play of the game. Chicago QB Rex Grossman hit WR Bernard Berrian for an 18-yard gain, but Chiefs S Bernard Pollard forced a fumble and DT Alfonso Boone recovered it. However, Kansas City was unable to mount a drive when it took over at midfield.

Chicago put together the first scoring drive of the afternoon with a 79-yard march that took over eight minutes. The balanced drive featured eight rushing plays and seven passing plays. The Bears used a bit of chicanery to score their first touchdown when Grossman hit tackle-eligible John St. Clair for a two-yard scoring pass and a 7-0 lead.

That lead quickly doubled as WR Devin Hester returned a Chiefs punt 73 yards for a touchdown minutes later. Chicago would tack on a 46-yard field goal to give the home squad a 17-0 edge with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter.

The Chiefs finally got on the board at the end of the first half when QB Damon Huard engineered the two-minute drill to perfection. After a 31-yard completion to TE Kris Wilson, Huard hit TE Tony Gonzalez for a 26-yard pickup. On the next play, Huard lofted a pass to the back corner of the end zone where rookie WR Dwayne Bowe hauled in the pass – which was actually intended for Gonzalez – for a 16-yard TD. Bowe’s first career score cut the Chicago lead to 17-7.

The Bears would turn another punt return into points in the third quarter when Hester’s 31-yard return set up a 38-yard field goal from K Robbie Gould. The Kansas City defense forced its second turnover of the day when LB Napoleon Harris intercepted a Grossman pass. K Dave Rayner, who was signed during the week, was good on his first FG attempt for Kansas City. He split the uprights on a 45-yard field goal to cut Chicago’s lead to 20-10.

The Chiefs caught a bad break in the early going of the fourth quarter when a 35-yard Huard-to-Bowe flea flicker into the end zone was nullified by an illegal motion penalty. Instead of the seven points, Kansas City would get nothing as a subsequent 48-yard field goal try by Rayner was blocked four plays later.

LB Donnie Edwards would give Kansas City life as he intercepted a Grossman pass and returned it to the Chicago 18-yard line on the Bears next possession. The Chiefs, however, came up empty again as Huard’s fade pass for WR Samie Parker was intercepted by S Danieal Manning in the end zone.

Kansas City would get one final opportunity to put points on the board when QB Brodie Croyle relieved a wounded Huard. Croyle methodically marched the Chiefs to the Chicago 24-yard line, but RB Michael Bennett was stripped by CB Charles Tillman with 2:21 remaining and the Bears were able to run the clock out to preserve the 20-10 victory.

In a tightly-contested defensive battle, the Kansas City Chiefs fell 13-9 to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday evening at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs turned the ball over four times as the Steelers held on to win. The Chiefs took an early 3-0 lead on a 41-yard field goal by K Ryan Succop to cap the game’s opening drive. Kansas City drove 57 yards on 11 plays in 4:20 and QB Tyler Palko was 3-for-4 passing as the Chiefs featured a no-huddle attack. He connected with WR Dwayne Bowe on a 25-yard completion to put the offense in field goal range. On Pittsburgh’s first possession, the Steelers drove 80 yards before Chiefs LB Tamba Hali forced a RB Mewelde Moore fumble at the 2-yard line that was recovered by CB Javier Arenas in the end zone for a touchback. Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger was 5-for-6 passing for 76 yards on the drive. Five plays later, Palko was unable to handle a snap and the fumble was recovered by Steelers DE Brett Keisel at KC’s 38-yard line. The Chiefs defense held thanks to an offensive holding penalty and a sack (-11.0 yards) from DL Amon Gordon. One play after the Steelers punt, Palko was intercepted at the KC 36-yard line by CB Ike Taylor, who returned the pick 29 yards to the Chiefs seven-yard line.Again, the Kansas City defense held and K Shaun Suisham tied the game with a 21-yard field goal with 13:29 left in the second quarter. Palko’s next pass was intercepted by S Ryan Mundy at the KC 29-yard line. Munday returned the pick five yards, and the Steelers were able to convert the turnover into points as Roethlisberger then found TE Weslye Saunders on a two-yard touchdown pass to finish a five-play, 24-yard drive in 2:29. Pittsburgh led 10-3 with 10:53 remaining in the first half. Succop connected on a 49-yard field goal to cut the lead to 10-6 with 4:30 left in the second quarter. The scoring drive lasted nine plays and covered 38 yards in 3:20. On the final play of the first half, Suisham connected on a 49-yard field goal to cap a nine-play, 47-yard drive in 4:30, making the score 13-6 in favor of Pittsburgh at halftime. Both defenses held strong as the teams traded possessions for the duration of the third quarter. The Chiefs pulled to with four at 13-9 with 7:11 left in regulation on a 40-yard field goal by Succop, his third of the night. The scoring march lasted 13 plays and covered 70 yards in 6:11. On Kansas City’s final drive, the Chiefs were moving down the field when Palko was intercepted by CB Keenan Lewis at the Pittsburgh 14-yard line with 29 seconds remaining. From there, Roethlisberger kneeled on the ball to run out the clock.
