Last week, QB Tyler Thigpen orchestrated a 14-play, 60-yard TD drive that was capped with a three-yard TD pass to TE Tony Gonzalez with 0:23 remaining at San Diego (11/9). Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, 2006. The fi rst coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fi fth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a fi ve-year stint (2001-

05) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs (’92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00. Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in ’76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia (’77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

Sean Payton was named the 14th head coach in Saints history on January 18, 2006. In his initial campaign, Payton guided New Orleans to a 10-6 record and the club’s fi rst-ever appearance in the NFC Championship Game. Prior to joining the Saints, Payton was a key member of Bill Parcells’ Cowboys staff for three seasons as assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator (2003-05). Payton originally entered the NFL as Philadelphia’s quarterbacks coach (’97-98). He served in that same role with the Giants in ’99 before being promoted to offensive coordinator (2000-02). In his fi rst season as the N.Y. Giants offensive coordinator, Payton captured the NFC championship and earned a berth in Super Bowl XXXV. Born December 29, 1963, in San Mateo, California, Payton began his coaching career at San Diego State (’88-89), before working at Indiana State (’90-91), a second stint at San Diego State (’92-93), Miami (Ohio) (’94-95) and Illinois (’96). He was an AP All-American quarterback at Eastern Illinois, passing for 10,665 career yards. Payton had playing stints with the Chicago Bears (’87) along with stints in the CFL and AFL.

Kansas City’s roster has undergone a tremendous transformation. Incredibly, 60.4% of the players on Kansas City’s 53-man roster (32 of 53) have three years of NFL experience or less, including 15 rookies (28.3%), the most rookies on any NFL Opening Day roster. The Chiefs started six of those rookies on Opening Day, the highest tally by the club since the AFL-NFL merger in ’70. Based on research compiled by Mike Sando of ESPN.com, the Chiefs boasted the NFL’s youngest Opening Day starting lineup in the NFL at 25.18 years old. Based on Opening Day 53-man rosters provided by the NFL, the Chiefs and Packers owned the NFL’s youngest rosters at 25.57 years old. In terms of average experience, no team had a lower average experience than Kansas City at 3.45 years. Kansas City also boasted the distinction of fi elding an NFL-high 17 rookies or fi rst-year players on its Opening Day roster. The Chiefs currently have an NFL-high 19 rookies on their roster.

The Chiefs have employed three different starting QBs for just the fi fth time in Chiefs history. The Chiefs are just the fourth team since the AFL-NFL merger to start three different QBs in the fi rst three games of the year in a non-strike season, joining the ’76 L.A. Rams, the ’88 Cleveland Browns and the ’97 Jacksonville Jaguars. Herm Edwards has made four playoff appearances since 2001 (only Tony Dungy - 7 and Bill Belichick - 6 own more). Since QB Vinny Testaverde started all 16 games for Edwards and the playoff-bound N.Y. Jets in 2001, Edwards has never enjoyed another season where a single QB opened all 16 games. Twice in KC (2006, 2008), his starting QB has been injured on Opening Day. Here are Edwards’ starting QBs during tenure as an NFL head coach. Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen became the fi rst player from Coastal Carolina to be selected in the NFL Draft when he was tabbed by Minnesota (D7-07). In his last three starts, the Winnsboro, SC native he has completed 66 of 102 passes (64.7%) of his passes for 710 yards with six TDs and no INTs, numbers that equate to a 104.6 rating. Chiefs Have Won the Turnover Battle in Recent Weeks The Chiefs own a +8 turnover differential (9 takes/1 give) in their last three contests. KC has forced a league-high 20 turnovers on the season, including an NFL-best 11 opponent fumble recoveries. The Chiefs are on pace to fi nish the year with 35 takes, which would be the club’s most since KC had 37 takes in 2003 and fi nished 13-3. The Chiefs are 9-4 under Herm Edwards when positive. KC owns a 46-5 (.902) record at Arrowhead when positive dating back to ’95, including wins in 19 of the club’s last 20 contests in those circumstances. New Orleans is 12-1 with a positive turnover margin under Sean Payton, including a 3-1 mark in 2008. Meanwhile, the Saints are just 2-16 (.111) with a negative turnover margin dating back to 2006, including a string of six straight losses dating back to last season. Slowing Down QB Drew Brees and the Saints Offense is a Must QB Drew Brees will make his initial start in a Saints uniform against the Chiefs. He made six career starts vs. KC as a member of the Chargers, posting a 3-3 record. All three of those losses came at Arrowhead. In four career starts in Kansas City, Brees owns a 1-3 record, completing 90 of 143 passes (62.9%) for 983 yards with seven TDs and three INTs (90.7 rating). His lone victory in KC was a 34-31 win (11/28/04) when he completed 28 of 37 passes (75.7%) for 378 yards with two TDs and no INTs (125.7 rating). Brees presides over a Saints squad that leads the NFL in total offense (416.2 ypg) and passing offense (325.7 ypg). Since joining the Saints in 2006, Brees has compiled a 12-4 record in games when he compiles a 100.0+ QB rating (min. 20 atts.), including a 4-1 mark this season. Only San Diego QB Philip Rivers (six) owns more 100.0-rating games in 2008. KC’s defense has forced six INTs the past three contests after picking off just three passes in the season’s fi rst six games, an even more remarkable stat considering that the Chiefs have a league-low 6.0 sacks. KC is 31-4 (.886) at Arrowhead dating back to ’95 when the club forces two or more INTs. Brees is just 5-22 (.185) all-time when he is picked off two or more times, including 11 straight losses. Brees had three INTs at Atlanta (11/9).

In KC’s fi rst six games, the club averaged 12.5 ppg, 257.3 ypg of total offense and 149.5 ypg of pass offense. That means the Chiefs are averaging 10.8 ppg and 93.7 ypg of total offense more over the last three contests. Thigpen has attempted 124 consecutive passes without an INT and has boasted a 100.0 rating or better in two of his last three starts. New Orleans is 3-14 when allowing an opponent to post a 100.0+ QB rating (min. 20 atts.) dating back to 2006. Thigpen will make his fi fth NFL start on Sunday and will be 24 years, 7 months and two days old. He will be seeking to become the youngest Chiefs starting QB to win his fi rst game for the club since QB Todd Blackledge (23 years, 6 months, 7 days) guided KC to a 37-27 win at Pittsburgh (9/2/84).

Rookie RB Jamaal Charles (D3-08) posted his inaugural 100-yard performance with 106 yards in the club’s last home game vs. Tampa Bay (11/2). The Chiefs are 15-1 (.938) at Arrowhead when RB Larry Johnson produces a 100-yard game. Sticking with the running game is critical against the Saints. New Orleans is 2-19 (.095) under Sean Payton when allowing a team to rush 25 or more times, including a string of 15 consecutive losses. The Chiefs produced a season-high 36 rush attempts in their last home game vs. TB (11/2). The Saints are 5-1 under Payton when they boast a 100-yard back, but are one of fi ve NFL teams without a 100-yard rusher in 2008. After permitting 207.3 rushing ypg in the season’s fi rst six games, KC has allowed just 102.6 rushing ypg the past three weeks, a remarkable decrease of 104.7 ypg. Arrowhead Traditionally Tough For First-Time Coaches Since ’94, KC is 25-8 (.758) against head coaches making their regular season debuts at Arrowhead. Sean Payton will make his regular season debut at Arrowhead on Sunday. The Saints are 10-10 on the road under Payton, including a string of fi ve straight losses dating back to 2007. The Saints last road victory was a 34-14 win at Atlanta (12/10/07). KC Roster Notes, Other Statistical Tidbits As of 11/10, KC has had 70 different players appear on its 53-man roster in 2008. KC has utilized the same 22 offensive and defensive starters in just two games this year - vs. Denver (9/28) and at Carolina (10/5). The combined record of the Chiefs fi rst nine opponents is currently 51-30 (.630). Kansas City and Dallas are the only teams to have three QBs attempt 25 or more passes this season.

Kansas City Seeks First Victory vs. New Orleans Since ’97 The Chiefs last victory vs. New Orleans came in the ’97 regular season fi nale at Arrowhead when Marty Schottenheimer’s Chiefs defeated Mike Ditka’s Saints by a 25-13 margin (12/21/97). Kansas City closed out a perfect 8-0 home record with that victory. However, the Saints did snap KC’s streak of 10 consecutive games without permitting a second-half TD in that game. That 10-game stretch broke a 63-year-old record owned by the ’34 Detroit Lions. Kansas City and New Orleans have met just once since that game with the Saints winning a 27-20 decision at New Orleans (11/14/04). The Saints are one of just four franchises the Chiefs haven’t defeated since the calendar rolled over to the year 2000. Here’s a look.

The Arrowhead Advantage vs. the NFC The Chiefs boast a 21-6 (.778) mark at Arrowhead vs. NFC foes dating back to the ’95 campaign. Only Jacksonville boasts a better home record in interconference play over that span at 21-4 (.840). Kansas City’s domination of NFC opponents at Arrowhead has been remarkable. In 27 home contests against NFC foes since ’95, KC has outscored those opponents by a 796-to-473 margin, an average score of 29.5 to 17.5. KC’s last victory against an NFC South foe was a 56-10 win vs. Atlanta (10/24/04). New Orleans is 4-7 (.364) vs. AFC opponents under Sean Payton, including a string of four straight road losses. The Saints only road win vs. an AFC opponent under Payton was a 19-14 win at Cleveland (9/10/06). New Orleans’ last road win vs. an AFC West foe was a 31-26 decision at Oakland (10/24/04). The Saints are 2-1 against AFC West opponents in 2008. New Orleans registered a 37-32 win vs. SD (10/26) in London and a 34-3 win vs. OAK (10/12), but suffered a 34-32 loss at DEN (9/21).

The Chiefs will face a New Orleans squad that ranks eighth in the NFL in scoring at 26.2 ppg. The Saints are 1-11 when being held to 21 points or less under Sean Payton, including a string of 11 consecutive losses. New Orleans’ only win in those circumstances was a 19-14 win at Cleveland (9/10/06). Only two teams have held the Saints to 21 points or less this season: 30-7 at Carolina (10/19) and 34-20 at Atlanta (11/9). In fact, New Orleans has scored at least 24 points in its seven other contests. The Saints are 14-2 (.875) under Sean Payton when scoring 30 points or more, including a 3-1 mark this season. KC owns a 56-11 (.836) record at Arrowhead since ’95 when scoring 21 points or more, while the Saints are 15-2 (.882) under Payton when holding foes to 20 points or less. KC Needs to Carry Over Its First-Half Success vs. the Saints Kansas City is 54-12 (.831) at Arrowhead when leading at halftime dating back to ’95. The Chiefs have been tied or ahead at halftime in each of their last three contests. Over that three-game span, KC has outscored its opponents by a 51-33 margin in the fi rst half, but has been outpointed by a 19-45 margin in the second half and OT. KC has scored 77.8% (21 of 27) of its fi rst-quarter points in 2008 the past two games thanks to opening drive TDs. The Saints are just 2-14 (.125) when trailing at halftime under Sean Payton, including a string of four straight losses. NO’s only win when trailing at half in 2008 came in a 24-20 win vs. Tampa Bay (9/7). Getting behind entering the fourth quarter isn’t advisable against New Orleans. The Saints are 20-3 (.870) under Payton when leading after three quarters, including a 4-1 mark in 2008. That lone loss when leading entering the fourth quarter this season came by a 29-24 count at Washington (9/14) when the Saints led 24-15 after three quarters. The Chiefs have owned a pair of leads entering the fourth quarter in 2008. KC held a 16-13 edge vs. Denver (9/28) and was ahead 24-13 vs. Tampa Bay (11/2).

For the second consecutive week, the Chiefs appeared poised to register a narrow road win, only to have victory slip through the club’s grasp as Kan-sas City dropped a 27-20 decision at New Orleans. RB Derrick Blaylock came 14 yards shy of the club’s single-game rushing record with an 186-yard outburst, the best total by a player making his initial NFL start since St. Louis RB Trung Candidate had 194 rushing yards vs. NYJ (10/21/01). Blaylock – who was starting in place of an injured RB Priest Holmes – racked up 79 yards in the first quarter alone as Kansas City jumped out to an early 10-0 lead. QB Trent Green, who finished the game with 311 yards to bypass QB Bill Kenney (15) as the club’s all-time leader in 300-yard passing games (16), found WR Eddie Kennison (7-121-1 TD) with a 21-yard scoring dart on the Chiefs first possession. After Kansas City’s defense forced the Saints three-and-out, the Chiefs appeared poised to score once again. But for the sec-ond straight week, a Red Zone fumble cost the Chiefs dearly as WR Johnnie Morton had the ball popped loose by S Jay Bellamy at the New Orleans 15-yard line. Perhaps the game’s key sequence came on KC’s next drive. After a personal foul on the Saints on third-and-goal from the six gave KC a new set of downs, the Chiefs were forced to settle for a 24-yard field goal when Green just overshot Blaylock in the end zone. The Saints then got on the board on a drive that was aided by three KC penalties when QB Aaron Brooks vaulted across the goal line from one yard out to make the count 10-7. A 13-yard RB Deuce McAllister TD run on New Orleans’ next drive gave the Saints a 14-10 advantage and KC would fight from behind for the rest of the game. A 44-yard K Lawrence Tynes FG cut the count to 14-13 Saints at the half. A pair of INTs doomed the Chiefs in the second half. Green was first victimized by CB Mike McKenzie in the third quarter when an open Morton fell down. Then with KC trailing 27-20 with 1:25 remaining in the contest, a ball went off Blaylock's hands into the arms of LB Orlando Ruff at the Saints four-yard line. KC got the ball back with 0:08 remaining, but Green was sacked and stripped by DE Darren Howard, preserving the Saints win.

GAME NOTES• Kansas City’s 497 yards marked the fourth con-secutive game that the club produced 400+ yards of total offense, the first time the club accomplished that feat since ’76.• RB Derrick Blaylock registered the fifth-best sin-gle-game rushing performance in Chiefs history with a career-best 186 yards. He became the first player other than RB Priest Holmes to register a 100-yard rushing game for the Chiefs since FB Tony Richardson had 156 yards vs. Denver (12/17/00).• Blaylock’s 33 rushing attempts tied as the fourth-highest total in franchise history.

2008 CHIEFS GAME-BY-GAME DEFENSE

THE LAST GAME

ChargersChargers 20, 20, ChiefsChiefs 1919November 9, 2008 • Qualcomm Stadium • 67,510

For the third week in a row the Chiefs were positioned in the game’s final five minutes to pull out a victory. Like the previous two weeks, they came up short, falling 20-19 at the San Diego as a failed two-point try doomed Kansas City. San Diego’s offense got the ball first and kept it for over four minutes, but eventually the Chiefs defense stopped them and the Chargers were forced to punt. QB Tyler Thigpen then led the Chiefs offense on a 12-play 85-yard drive for the game’s first TD. Working out of the spread offense with no huddle on most plays, QB Tyler Thigpen hit seven of eight throws. The big one came when he beat the blitz and lofted a 30-yard TD pass into the right end zone to WR Mark Bradley to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead. San Diego’s offense began its next drive at their own 20-yard line and QB Philip Rivers drove them into Chiefs territory with a first-and-10 at the Kansas City 21-yard line. But the Chiefs defense was again able to hold. K Nate Kaeding kicked a 34-yard FG and early in the second quarter the score was 7-3. On its next offensive possession, San Diego again drove down the field and had a first-and-10 situation at the Chiefs 15-yard line. The Kansas City defense again was able to get the stop, as Kaeding kicked a 26-yard field goal and the Chiefs held a 7-6 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the half. Thigpen came right back and directed a seven-play, 83-yard scoring drive where he was four for four throwing the ball, including the 34-yard scoring pass to TE Tony Gonzalez. The PAT kick was botched on a bad snap and the Chiefs held a 13-6 lead with just over three minutes to play. San Diego again drove into Chiefs territory, but this time S Bernard Pollard snuffed out the possession with an interception of Rivers in the end zone and the half ended with the Chiefs ahead 13-6. After the teams traded punts to start the second half, San Diego finally got its offense moving after taking possession at its own 42-yard line. Rivers drove the Chargers 58 yards on eight plays finishing up with a five-yard TD pass to WR Malcom Floyd to tie the count at 13-13. The Chiefs defense did force another turnover before the quarter was over when DT Tank Tyler pressured Rivers and the quarterback’s fluttering throw was picked off by S Jon McGraw. San Diego then grabbed the lead with a drive that started on the final play of the third quarter. Rivers moved the offense down the field, converting three first downs and finally ending up in the end zone with an eight-yard TD pass to TE Antonio Gates. It was a 14-play 94-yard drive that took 8:28 off the clock and put the Chargers up 20-13. The Chiefs eventually got the ball back on their own 40-yard line with 3:00 to play. Thigpen led them down the field, converting several third down plays and a big fourth down throw to Bradley that continued the possession. On third-and-three from the Chargers three-yard line with 0:29 to play, Thigpen threw a dart to Gonzalez in the end zone for the TD that gave the Chiefs a chance for victory. With the score at 20-19, head coach Herm Edwards decided to go for two points and the victory rather than the tie, but Thigpen’s pass for Gonzalez in the end zone was broken up and the Chargers prevailed 20-19.
