BROADCAST INFORMATION

Miami holds a 15-12-0 (.555) all-time record against Kansas City in regular season and postseason action. The series is tied at 12-12 (.500) for all regular season contests and Miami has won all three postseason games. The Chiefs hold a 6-4 (.600) advantage in games played in Kansas City, but are just 3-3 in contests at Arrowhead Stadium. The clubs have matched up fi ve times in the preseason with Miami holding a 1-3-1 (.300) advantage.

Kansas City won the fi rst six contests in the series from ’66-69, outscoring the Dolphins by a 183-47 count. The Dolphins won fi ve straight games against the Chiefs from ’93-97, as all fi ve of those contests were played in Miami. Included in that streak was an AFC Wild Card Game in ’94. Miami’s fi rst win against the Chiefs was a 27-24 double overtime victory at Kansas City (12/25/71) in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game. The Christmas Day game lasted 82:40 and is the longest game played in NFL history. It was the fi nal game played at Municipal Stadium, featuring 11 future Pro Football Hall of Famers and two Hall of Fame head coaches in Hank Stram and Don Shula. The Dolphins won the last regular season game between the two clubs by a 38-31 score (12/21/08) in the second-coldest day in Arrowhead Stadium history. Kansas City QB Tyler Thigpen threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns.

Kansas City pulled out a thrilling 23-20 overtime victory last week vs. San Diego (10/31) on Monday Night Football. The win moved the Chiefs into a three-way tie for fi rst place in the AFC West as the club became the fi rst team to win four consecutive games after losing its fi rst three since Pittsburgh achieved the feat in 2000. Miami is 0-7 on the season after suffering a 20-17 setback at the N.Y. Giants (10/30). The Chiefs defense has been opportunistic over the last two games as the unit has produced 10 takeaways. That total is the most in the NFL over that time period. San Diego is next with six takeaways. Kansas City has intercepted eight passes in its last two outings. The Chiefs had a streak of seven consecutive quarters without allowing a point end when San Diego made a fi eld goal in the second quarter last week. Kansas City posted a second-half shutout at Indianapolis (10/9) before shutting out the Raiders in Oakland (10/23). It was the club’s fi rst shutout against the Raiders in team history. Kansas City added to that streak when it held San Diego off the scoreboard for the fi rst quarter. K Nick Novak made a 44-yard fi eld goal in the second quarter to end the streak. Kansas City has intercepted 13 passes in 2011, tying with Green Bay for second in the NFL. Only Buffalo (14) has recorded more. The Chiefs are on pace for 30 interceptions, which would be the club’s most since the team had 31 in ’86. CB Brandon Flowers is tied for second in the AFC and tied for third in the NFL with four interceptions. LB Derrick Johnson leads the team in tackles and had a sack and an INT vs. San Diego (10/31). RB Jackie Battle paces the club with 302 rushing yards on 64 attempts with a TD. He had a career-high 119 rushing yards at Indianapolis (10/9). WR Dwayne Bowe has 558 receiving yards and is on pace for 1,275 receiving yards for his third 1,000-yard receiving season. WR Steve Breaston has added 335 receiving yards. QB Matt Cassel has thrown nine touchdowns to tie for seventh in the AFC. The Chiefs continue their three-game homestand next week when they welcome AFC West foe Denver to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 13. Miami returns home next week to host Washington.

GROUND GAME

Kansas City ranks among the league leaders in rushing, behind the running back trio of Jackie Battle, Thomas Jones and Dexter McCluster. The Chiefs are averaging 124.3 rushing yards per game, ranking ninth in the NFL. Prior to Monday’s game vs. San Diego (10/31), Battle was averaging 3.4 rushing yards after contact, the top mark among running backs with 40+ carries. As a team, the Chiefs have recorded 375 yards after contact. Miami is tallying 116.9 rushing ypg to stand 12th in the NFL. RB Reggie Bush leads the club with 335 yards, but has averaged 4.5 yards per carry on 75 carries. Former Kansas State product RB Daniel Thomas is second on the Dolphins with 302 rushing yards, but missed last week’s game at the N.Y. Giants (10/30) with a hamstring injury. The Chiefs defense is allowing 122.1 rushing ypg on the season to rank 22nd in the NFL. The club is only permitting 4.07 yards per carry, a mark that is 13th in the NFL. During its four-game winning streak, Kansas City has only allowed 121.5 rushing ypg and two rushing TDs. Miami is allowing 109.9 rushing ypg on the season.

PROTECTING THE FOOTBALL

The Chiefs have intercepted opposing quarterbacks 13 times on the season, tying for second in the NFL. The club trails only Buffalo, who has picked off opposing QBs 14 times. Kansas City is on pace for 30 interceptions on the season, which would be the club’s highest total since the team had 31 QB pickoffs in ’86. CB Brandon Flowers is tied for second in the AFC and tied for third in the NFL with four interceptions. He had two interceptions at Oakland (10/23) and returned one for a 58-yard touchdown to earn AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Kansas City has returned four of those interceptions for 20+ yards, tying for the fourth-highest total in the NFL. Only Buffalo (3) and Detroit (3) has returned more interceptions for a touchdown than Kansas City’s two return scores. S Kendrick Lewis has 119 interception return yards, ranking third in the league. PROTECTING THE QUARTERBACK

Kansas City has allowed QB Matt Cassel to only be sacked 13.0 times in 2011, tying for the sixth fewest in the NFL. The club has only lost 78.0 yards on those QB takedowns. The Chiefs have only permitted a sack on 6.0% of its pass plays to stand 17th in the league. Miami has allowed its quarterbacks to be sacked 27.0 times on the year. That fi gure ranks as the second-most in the NFL. Only Seattle (28.0) is allowing more. The Dolphins have permitted a sack on 10.6% of their pass plays, losing 160.0 yards on those plays. QB Matt Moore has been sacked 16.0 times in four contests while opponents took down QB Chad Henne 11.0 times in the fi rst four games of the season before he was injured. Sunday’s contest will be Moore’s fi rst start against Kansas City.

The Kansas City defense has been stringent when it comes to allowing points. Dating back to their game at Indianapolis (10/9), the Chiefs are allowing 14.7 points per game, tying for the second-fewest in the NFL during that time frame. Kansas City had a streak of seven consecutive quarters without allowing a point dating back to the third quarter of a contest at Indianapolis (10/8). Included in that streak was a 28-0 shutout at Oakland (10/23), the Chiefs fi rst shutout on the road of the Raiders in the 52-year history of the series. On the season, Kansas City allowing 24.3 ppg to rank 25th in the NFL. Miami allowed 22.0 points per game in the month of October to rank 18th in the NFL. In 2011, the club is permitting 23.7 ppg, standing 23rd in the NFL. The Dolphins have been outscored by 59 points on the season. Only Jacksonville (-65), Denver (-67), St. Louis (-105) and Indianapolis (-131) have been outscored by more than Miami.

SHUTOUT DEFENSE

100-YARD RUSHERS

Dating back to 2009, Kansas City is 8-4 when producing a 100-yard rusher. So far in 2011, the club is 1-0 as Battle tallied a career-high 119 rushing yards at Indianapolis (10/9). The Chiefs have won six consecutive games with a 100-yard rusher dating back to a contest vs. Jacksonville (10/24/10). Chiefs RB Thomas Jones has recorded 34 regular season games with 100 or more rushing yards as his teams have posted a 20-14 (.588) mark in those contests. Miami is 5-3 when a running back tallies 100 or more rushing yards in a game. But the Dolphins have only produced two 100-yard rushers since 2010, tying for the third-fewest in the NFL during that time. Only Green Bay (1) Seattle (0) hav recorded fewer. Dolphins RB Reggie Bush has two career 100-yard rushing games in his six-year NFL career and interestingly, they have both occurred at the N.Y. Giants. He had a career-high 126 rushing yards at the N.Y. Giants (12/24/06) while with New Orleans. He had 109 yard at the N.Y. Giants (10/30/11). Kansas City is 3-7 when allowing a 100-yard rusher dating back to a 2009. During that timeframe, the Dolphins are 4-2 when permitting a 100-yard rusher, including marks of 2-0 in 2010 and 2-1 in 2009.

Kansas City is in the middle of a three-game homestand, playing contests vs. San Diego (10/31), Miami (11/6) and Denver (11/13). It is the club’s fi rst three-game homestand since 2009 when the team hosted Denver, Buffalo and Cleveland in successive weeks. Dating back to ’90, it is the sixth time the Chiefs have played three straight games at home. In fact, the only time Kansas City posted a 3-0 mark during a three-game homestand was in ’90, a streak that started with a game vs. Denver (9/20/93) on Monday Night Football.

THE LAST TIMEDolphins 38, Chiefs 31Dolphins 38, Chiefs 31

December 21, 2008 • Arrowhead Stadium • 73,689

On the second-coldest day in Arrowhead Stadium history based on kickoff wind chill, a pair of hot offenses combined for 895 yards, nine TDs and 69 points, but it was the Miami Dolphins who walked off the field with a 38-31 victory. The temperature was 10 degrees with a wind chill factor of -12. Miami took the opening kickoff and RB Patrick Cobbs broke off a 60-yard return to the Kansas City 31-yard line. On the Dolphins first offensive play, WR Ted Ginn, Jr. took an end-around play and went untouched into the end zone, giving Miami a 7-0 lead with just 18 seconds off the clock. The Dolphins added three more points after CB Andre Goodman picked off a QB Tyler Thigpen pass intended for TE Tony Gonzalez and returned it 55 yards to the Chiefs 18-yard line. The Kansas City defense stiffened and eventually forced K Dan Carpenter to kick a 34-yard FG, giving the Dolphins a quick 10-0 lead. Given their second chance with the football, the Chiefs offense put points on the board. After RB Larry Johnson ripped off a 25-yard run to the Miami 33-yard line, Thigpen faked a handoff to Johnson, then ran a bootleg to his right and threw the ball up in the end zone where WR Devard Darling out jumped two Miami defenders for the ball to slice Miami’s lead to 10-7. As the second quarter began, the Chiefs finished off a long scoring drive. Thigpen took the offense for 80 yards on 17 plays with six first downs, finishing up with an eight-yard TD pass to Gonzalez on a fourth-and-one play to give the Chiefs a 14-10 lead. Miami came right back and regained the lead on an 11-yard pass from QB Chad Pennington to TE David Martin to put Miami back on top at 17-14. Again, the Chiefs replied, thanks to their longest pass play of the season. On first-and-10 at their own 23-yard line, Thigpen and RB Jamaal Charles connected on a bubble screen that went for 75 yards to the Dolphins two-yard line. Johnson’s two-yard TD run on the next play put the Chiefs back on top at 21-17. Pennington then led his team on a 66-yard drive in seven plays that was capped with a 14-yard pass to TE Anthony Fasano, giving Miami a 24-21 lead. The Chiefs would take a lead into halftime as Thigpen capped an eight-play, 95-yard drive with his legs on an eight-yard QB draw into the end zone for the score to give Kansas City a 28-24 advantage. After not being forced to punt in the entire first half, the Chiefs opened the second half with another scoring drive. Thigpen drove the offense 69 yards on nine plays, picking up three first downs along the way, but the offense stalled in scoring territory and K Connor Barth hit a 27-yard FG to give the Chiefs a 31-24 lead with 9:11 left in the third period. RB Ricky Williams answered on Miami’s next drive and hit the end zone untouched for a four-yard TD run for a 31-31 tie. It looked like the Chiefs were again on the way to returning the fire, driving the ball down to the Dolphins 26-yard line. But Thigpen threw his second INT of the day at the Miami six-yard line. Both defenses forced punts, before Pennington methodically drove his offense down the field as the Dolphins ate 8:33 off the clock. A 14-yard pass from Pennington to Fasano gave the Dolphins a 38-31 lead with 4:08 left to play. The Chiefs had their opportunity to answer back, but on a fourth-and-one play at his own 26-yard line, Thigpen slipped and fell on a bootleg run, turning the ball over on downs. Kansas City got one final opportunity when Williams fumbled at the Chiefs seven-yard line. But Thigpen threw his third INT of the game, allowing the Dolphins to run out the clock for a 38-31 road victory.

In a classic back-and-forth battle on Monday Night Football, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Diego Chargers, 23-20, in overtime on a 30-yard field goal by K Ryan Succop. After the Chiefs defense forced a three-and-out on the opening drive of the game, the Chiefs took an early 3-0 first quarter lead on a 36-yard field goal by Succop. The 10-play drive covered 49 yards in 4:46. QB Matt Cassel passed for 53 yards on the drive, including third down completions to WR Dwayne Bowe and WR Jonathan Baldwin. During San Diego's drive, S Kendrick Lewis intercepted a QB Philip Rivers pass and returned it 10 yards to the SD 25-yard line. For Lewis, it was his third pick of the season and second in as many weeks. One play later, Chargers DE Corey Liuget forced a RB Dexter McCluster fumble that was recovered by CB Quentin Jammer. During the next drive, DE Wallace Gilberry tipped a Rivers pass that was intercepted by LB Derrick Johnson at the Kansas City 22-yard line. The Chiefs moved down the field and took a 10-point lead, covering 77 yards over four plays in 2:01, culminating with Baldwin’s first career touchdown reception on a 39-yard pass from Cassel. K Nick Novak got the Chargers on the board with a 44-yard field goal with 8:31 left in the first half. The scoring drive covered 46 yards over six plays and snapped a streak of seven consecutive quarters that the Chiefs defense had not allowed a point. San Diego was driving on its next possession when S Jon McGraw forced a RB Ryan Mathews fumble that was recovered by Lewis at the 16-yard line. Just three plays later, Cassel was sacked by OLB Travis LaBoy, who forced a fumble that was recovered by CB Dante Hughes at the Chiefs 22-yard line. With 0:07 left in the first half, Succop added a 47-yard field goal to cap a six-play, 29-yard drive to give the Chiefs a 13-3 lead heading into halftime. Novak hit a 44-yard field goal with 8:10 remaining to finish a 10-play, 62-yard drive, making the score 13-6. On the ensuing drive, Chargers S Eric Weddle intercepted a Cassel pass and returned it to the KC 28-yard line. Novak followed with a 42-yard field goal to cut the lead to 13-9 with 6:01 left in the third quarter. Novak’s fourth field goal was from 26 yards out to pull SD within one with 1:45 left in the third quarter. The drive lasted seven plays and covered 54 yards in 2:05. The Chiefs answered with a 10-play, 74-yard scoring march in 4:44, capped off by one-yard plunge by RB Jackie Battle. On the previous play, Battle broke loose for an 18-yard run to set up the score. Battle rushed five times for 42 yards on the drive. Rivers led SD right back down the field and RB Curtis Brinkley scored on a two-yard dive to cap a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Rivers then hit Brinkley for a two-point conversion to tie the game at 20 with 7:11 left. After San Diego got the ball back, the Chargers drove down to the Kansas City 16-yard line when Rivers fumbled an exchange on third down and LB Andy Studebaker recovered for the Chiefs. Cassel then completed passes to WR Keary Colbert and Bowe to get into Chargers territory before Weddle notched his second interception of the game and the teams headed to overtime. The Chiefs defense forced a three-and-out on the opening possession of overtime, including a sack and forced fumble by LB Tamba Hali. Kansas City then marched down the field and set up Succop’s heroics to complete a 14-play, 69-yard drive in 7:28.
