THE MATCH-UP Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards returns to the Big Apple as Kansas City faces the N.Y. Giants in a preseason contest that will be televised nationally by FOX on Thursday evening (8/17) from Giants Stadium. Kansas City enters the contest after a 24-14 loss at Houston (8/12), while the Giants are coming off a 17-16 win at Baltimore (8/11). After five seasons guiding the on-field fortunes of the N.Y. Jets (2001-05), Edwards is entering his first campaign in charge of the Chiefs. However, Edwards is a familiar face at Arrowhead Stadium after beginning his pro coaching career with Kansas City as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout and defensive backs coach for the club before joining Tony Dungy’s staff in Tampa Bay in ’96. Edwards inherits a Kansas City squad that finished 10-6 a year ago. After becoming the first coach in Jets history to guide that franchise to a trio of postseason berths, Edwards is seeking to lead the Chiefs back to the postseason for the first time since 2003. New York won the NFC East with a 11-5 record a year ago in Tom Coughlin’s second season with that franchise. The Chiefs and Giants boast two of the NFL’s most exciting and productive performers at running back. In Kansas City, RB Larry Johnson earned his initial Pro Bowl berth a year ago after piling up 2,093 yards from scrimmage, a figure that ranked second in the league behind only Giants Pro Bowl RB Tiki Barber (2,390). In terms of rushing yards, only Seattle RB Shaun Alexander (1,880) accumulated a better total than Barber (1,860) and Johnson (1,750) last season. Up next for the Chiefs is a Governor’s Cup match up at Arrowhead against in-state rival St. Louis (8/26), while the Giants have a “road” contest at the N.Y. Jets (8/25). The NFL’s first mandatory cutdown date is Tuesday, August 29th when clubs must trim their rosters to a maximum of 75 players. THE SERIES Kansas City owns a 2-9 (.182) record in regular season play vs. the Giants. The Chiefs are 1-2 in preseason play vs. the Giants, giving KC a 3-11 overall mark against New York. Kansas City’s initial meeting of any kind with the Giants came in the ’72 Hall of Fame Game (7/29/72) when the Chiefs defeated New York by a 23-17 margin in Canton, Ohio. The last preseason meeting between the two squads resulted in a 34-23 Giants win at the Meadowlands (8/13/04). The Chiefs have never defeated New York on the road, owning an 0-6 mark in regular season play against the Giants at Giants Stadium. Kansas City’s most recent regular season trip to the Meadowlands to face the Giants was a 27-17 setback (12/17/05). Giants RB Tiki Barber established a single-game franchise record for New York in that contest, rushing for 220 yards. Kansas City is 2-3 in regular season play vs. the Giants at Arrowhead. The Giants received a standing ovation when they were introduced in their most recent trip to Arrowhead, a contest that marked the NFL’s return to play following the tragic events of September 11th. The Giants won that contest by a 13-3 count (9/23/01). Kansas City’s most recent win against the Giants was a 20-17 overtime thriller at Arrowhead (9/10/95). That victory initiated a string of three consecutive home OT victories for Kansas City to start the ’95 campaign. QB Steve Bono rallied KC from a 17-3 fourth-quarter deficit and tied the score at 17-17 with a three-yard TD pass to WR Danan Hughes with 1:22 remaining. K Lin Elliott’s 23-yard FG in OT made the final count 20-17 in favor of the Chiefs. THE HEAD COACHES

EDWARDS VS. THE GIANTS (0-1) In his only regular season meeting with the Giants as head coach of the N.Y. Jets, Herm Edwards’ team suffered a 31-28 OT loss vs. the N.Y. Giants (11/2/03). However, Edwards did compile a 4-1 preseason mark against the Giants. Edwards is 0-1 in regular season action against current Giants head coach Tom Coughlin as Jacksonville registered a 28-3 win vs. the N.Y. Jets (9/29/02). DATE RESULT OPP. COACH 11/2/03 L N.Y. Giants 31 N.Y. JETS 28 OT Jim Fassel

ACCORDING TO COACH HERM . . .

On his “team” philosophy: “Just because they hired a defensive head coach everyone thinks I’m going to change the offense. I’m not trying to change the offense. There is a certain way you’ve got to play. The defense has to go out there and stop them and the offense has to believe when we have that kind of lead we can run the ball and the game’s over. We’ve got to play the clock a little better and protect each other.” “You look at the playoff teams, their defenses are pretty good and help them win on the road. You have to have a defense that can go in there and slow down an offense on the road because then you can keep the game close and smart teams win close games.” On the 2006 Chiefs: “This team is a good football team. This is not a team that hasn’t won. This team has won. We just haven’t been in the playoffs enough and that’s the hurdle we are facing now. That’s something we have to strive to be more consistent that way. I think this team has a lot of gifted players. Look at the number of Pro Bowl players they had last year. Maybe not on defense, but hopefully that’s going to change. I would assume that’s going to change.” “I think sometimes we jump ahead too far. We worry about Super Bowls, but you can’t win a Super Bowl unless you win your first game. You might luck into one every once in a while and have a great season, but most of the time you have to be a consistent playoff football team. That’s what this team needs to become. We need to become a consistent playoff team. We have to get to the playoffs.”

EDWARDS RIGHT AT HOME IN THE MEADOWLANDS Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards owns a long history at the

Meadowlands, dating back to his 10-year NFL playing career that featured a nine-year stint with the Philadelphia Eagles (’77-85). Edwards compiled a 6-3 regular season record as a player at Giants Stadium. Clearly the most infamous of those wins for Giants fans was “The Miracle of the Meadowlands.” With the Giants leading 17-12 with 0:31 remaining in the contest, Giants QB Joe Pisarcik fumbled a handoff attempt as New York tried to run out the clock. The ball was scooped up by Edwards for a 26-yard TD to give Philadelphia a 19-17 win (11/19/78). During his five-year stint as the head coach of the N.Y. Jets, Edwards’ squads compiled a 22-18 regular season mark in home games at the Meadowlands.

WHAT TO WATCH IN 2006 • DE Jared Allen has 20.0 career sacks and needs 4.5 more to move

into the club’s all-time top 10 in that category. • TE Tony Gonzalez has 56 TD receptions and needs two more to

pass WR Otis Taylor (57) for the most in Chiefs history. Gonzalez has 648 receptions and needs 15 more catches to surpass TE Ozzie Newsome (662) for the second-most by a TE in NFL history.

• QB Trent Green has made 99 career regular season starts and will open his 100th NFL game in his next start. Green is the only QB to have an active streak of four consecutive 90.0+ rating seasons and is only the third QB in NFL history to accomplish the feat. He can pass Green Bay QB Brett Favre (four) for the second-longest streak in NFL history.

• WR Dante Hall has six career kickoff return TDs and needs one more to surpass RBs Ollie Matson, Gale Sayers, Travis Williams and Mel Gray for the most in NFL history.

• RB Larry Johnson has 2,416 rushing yards and needs 1,283 more to move into the club’s all-time top five. RB Marcus Allen (3,698) currently ranks fifth in that category.

• G Will Shields has started 207 consecutive games, the longest streak in team history and the third-longest streak in the NFL history since ’70. Shields has played in 208 games and can pass K Nick Lowery (212) for first in team history in 2006.

• K Lawrence Tynes has made 44 field goals and needs six more to surpass Lin Elliott (49) for fourth in team history.

• S Greg Wesley has 26 interceptions and needs two more to move ahead of LB Willie Lanier (27) for eighth in team history.

In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

THE 2006 CHIEFS The Chiefs are coming off a 10-6 record in 2005 and are seeking

to return to the postseason for the first time since 2003. Herm Edwards enters his sixth season as an NFL head coach, his first guiding the Chiefs. Gunther Cunningham is his second stint as KC’s defensive coordinator after rejoining the club in 2004. Mike Solari enters his 10th season with the Chiefs and was promoted to offensive coordinator in the off-season.

Kansas City continued to bolster its defensive unit in the off-season with several more notable additions. In addition to former Pro Bowlers already on the roster such as LB Kendrell Bell, CB Patrick Surtain and S Sammy Knight, the Chiefs added five-time Pro Bowl CB Ty Law as a free agent on July 23rd. The Chiefs secondary was further solidified with a pair of promising young players in S Bernard Pollard (D2-06) and S Jarrad Page (D7-06). Johnson also racked up 20 rushing scores in 2005 and totaled an incredible 2,093 yards from scrimmage on the season to rank second in the league. Seven-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez continues to produce at a consistent rate and is the franchise’s all-time leading receiver, while WR Eddie Kennison has registered back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns.

Kansas City’s specialty units are headed by Mike Priefer. The Chiefs boast one of the league’s top young kicking tandems in K Lawrence Tynes and P Dustin Colquitt (D3-05). The Chiefs fell to the N.Y. Giants by a 27-17 count at Giants Stadium. The contest featured a head-to-head rushing duel as RB Tiki Barber set a Giants single-game rushing record with 220 yards and a pair of rushing scores while Chiefs RB Larry Johnson managed 167 yards and two TDs in a losing effort. Early on the game had all the makings of a defensive struggle. After a scoreless first quarter, the Chiefs defense forced a QB Eli Manning fumble, allowing KC to crack the scoreboard first with an 18-play drive that took 8:10 off the clock. The Chiefs settled for a K Lawrence Tynes 19-yard field goal after the Giants stuffed three KC rushing attempts from inside the three-yard line. The lead did not last long as Barber and the Giants bounced back. The Pro Bowl runner touched the ball five times on the eight-play drive as the Giants marched down the field. He capped the drive with an impressive 41-yard TD run, breaking several would-be tackles in the process as the Giants took a 7-3 lead. New York would add a 41-yard field goal in waning moments of the first half for a 10-3 lead at intermission. After trailing 10-3 at halftime, Kansas City quickly tied the score at 10-10 on the opening possession of the second half. On the first play from scrimmage QB Trent Green found WR Samie Parker open over the middle for a 18-yard gain and then went back to his second-year receiver on the next snap, this time drawing an illegal contact penalty. Johnson capped the drive with four straight carries, including a 14-yard TD trot around the right end to knot the score. KC’s defense thwarted a New York scoring drive on the next possession as CB Dexter McCleon picked off Manning. However, the Chiefs could not convert the takeaway into points, placing the ball back in Barber’s hands. As he did all evening, he dented the Chiefs run defense, this time with a 55-yard carry to set up K Jay Feely’s second field goal of the game. Minutes later Manning found WR Amani Toomer for a 31-yard touchdown strike. The score gave the Giants a 20-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. However, the Chiefs offense would respond. Johnson carried the ball six times on KC’s ensuing drive, but the big play was a defensive pass interference penalty that moved the ball down to the Giants one-yard line. Johnson finished the drive with a one-yard dive to cut the N.Y. Giants lead to 20-17 with 8:29 remaining. Once again, Barber had an answer, this time putting a final dagger into the Chiefs with a 20-yard TD run to push the Giants advantage back to 27-17 with 2:48 left to play. KC’s final drive was halted when WR Eddie Kennison was stripped of the ball while trying to gain extra yardage, giving the ball back to the Giants who were able to run out the clock.

GAME NOTES• The Chiefs defense allowed an individual 100-yard rusher for the first time in 20 games, a mark which had stood as the longest active streak in the NFL.• RB Larry Johnson registered his seventh straight 100-yard rushing game, extending the longest streak in Chiefs history. It was also his ninth career game with two or more rushing TDs.• WR Dante Hall topped the 2,000-yard mark in combined net yards for the fourth consecutive year, joining St. Louis RB Marshall Faulk (’98-01) as the only other player in NFL history to reach that 2,000-yard plateau in four straight seasons.

The Chiefs officially ushered in the Herm Edwards era with the club’s preseason opener at Houston. However, the outcome wasn’t what he was seeking as the Texans held on for 24-14 victory. After a 22-yard FG by Houston K Kris Brown gave the Texans that advantage midway through the third frame, Brown had a chance to increase his squad’s lead, but his 40-yard attempt sailed wide right. RB Damien Rhodes tacked on a four-yard TD run with 5:42 left in the game to make the count 24-7. Kansas City’s defense forced the Texans to punt on the game’s opening possession. After the Texans converted a fourth-and-one near midfield, Houston marched downfield and opened the scoring on a three-yard TD run by rookie RB Wali Lundy. Houston’s 13-play, 65-yard drive gave the Texans a 7-0 lead with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter. Kansas City moved across midfield on its next possession thanks to back-to-back completions thanks to completions from QB Trent Green to WR Eddie Kennison and TE Kris Wilson. The Chiefs knotted the score on a 12-yard TD run by RB Dee Brown, who burst through the middle untouched. Kansas City chewed up 7:21 off the clock its 13-play, 71-yard scoring march. RB Larry Johnson converted a pair of first downs on the drive and left the game after carrying the ball seven times for 30 yards. QB Casey Printers and a host of other substitutions entered the lineup on Kansas City’s third offensive possession. Houston broke a 7-7 tie late in the second quarter after backup QB Sage Rosenfels dove into the end zone to cap a five-yard TD run. Printers attempted to get the club into field goal range late in the first half, but an intentional grounding call effectively halted the Chiefs scoring chance as Kansas City entered the locker room trailing 14-7. Printers was sacked by DE John Chick early in the third quarter. The ball was knocked loose on the play and was recovered by DT Earl Cochran. Houston took over on the Kansas City 22-yard line, but was limited to a 22-yard field goal by the Chiefs defense. Printers moved the Chiefs into Texans territory late in the fourth quarter on a 44-yard pass to rookie WR Chris Hannon. The drive stalled when Printers was sacked on third down. P Dustin Colquitt’s ensuing punt was muffed by Houston returner WR David Anderson and Chiefs FB J.R. Niklos recovered at the Texans seven-yard line. Three plays later the Chiefs scored their second TD of the game on a one-yard plunge by RB Quentin Griffin to make the final score 24-14.
