Brad Childress was named the seventh head coach in Vikings history on January 6, 2006. He guided Minnesota to a 10-6 record and an NFC North title in 2008. Born June 27, 1956 in Aurora, Illinois, Childress played QB and WR at Illinois before transferring to Eastern Illinois. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Illinois in ’78.

He is entering his 13th season as an NFL coach after beginning his career as a scouting assistant with the N.Y. Jets in ’95.

Haley joined the Chiefs after a two-year stint as Arizona’s offensive coordinator (2007-08), helping the Cardinals reach Super Bowl XLIII as the club won its first division title since ’75. Under Haley’s direction, the Cardinals ranked third in the league in scoring as Arizona registered a franchise-record 427 points in 2008. The Cardinals also threw a team-record 32 TD passes in 2007.

Haley has won division titles with four different NFL teams. He served as passing game coordinator/WRs coach under Bill Parcells with Dallas (2004-06) after beginning his career under Parcells with the N.Y. Jets (’97-00). He also served as WRs coach with Chicago (2001-03). Born on February 28, 1967, Haley grew up in Upper St. Clair, PA and graduated from North Florida in ’91. A high-pressure defense and critical halftime adjustments were a winning recipe as the Chiefs won their 2007 home opener with a 13-10 victory over the Vikings. After gaining just 56 yards of offense in the first half, Kansas City opened things up in the second half with a pair of long scoring drives, while the Chiefs swarming defense held Minnesota in check.

The Vikings built a 10-0 lead on the strength of good field position and rookie RB Adrian Peterson. Starting at midfield on their first possession, QB Kelly Holcomb connected on passes of 10 and 11 yards before Peterson bounced a run off right tackle and scored an 11-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

Minnesota would tack on a field goal after a Chiefs turnover. DE Spencer Johnson hit QB Damon Huard as he was about to pass, forcing a fumble that the Vikings would recover at the KC 33-yard line. Kansas City's defense stiffened and the Vikings would settle for a 22-yard field goal from K Ryan Longwell.

The Chiefs would get on the board when DE Jared Allen forced a Peterson fumble and K Dave Rayner banged through a 39-yard FG to make the score 10-3 late in the half.

Trying to mount a last minute rally before halftime, Minnesota drove as deep as the KC 30-yard line. However, the Vikings drive was snuffed out when Allen sacked Holcomb on both third and fourth down to end the half and keep the Chiefs within one score at 10-3.

That set the stage for the Chiefs second-half comeback. Kansas City’s defense pitched a shutout after intermission and the offense did just enough to escape Arrowhead with the season’s first victory.

Trailing 10-3 at halftime, the Chiefs offense was stuck in neutral and having little success mounting a rushing attack. Minnesota boasted the NFL’s top run defense in 2006 and used a constant eight-man front to hold RB Larry Johnson to just 42 yards on the day. However, Johnson’s work keeping the defense honest allowed QB Damon Huard to orchestrate two scoring drives in the second half.

Huard had only 37 passing yards at intermission, but he doubled that on Kansas City’s first possession of the second half. Using his big weapons in TE Tony Gonzalez and WR Dwayne Bowe, Huard went four for seven for 70 yards, setting up Rayner for a 49-yard field goal to cut the defecit to 10-6.

The Chiefs defense forced a punt on the Vikings ensuing possession and the passing game went back to work. Huard hit Bowe for a 15-yard gain on the first play, then found Gonzalez for 15 yards on a third down moments later. After another 17-yard catch by Bowe, the first-round pick outleaped CB Cedric Griffin and snatched a brilliant 16-yard TD pass in the corner of end zone. Bowe’s second career TD gave the Chiefs their first lead of the 2007 season at 13-10 early in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs defense needed two more stands to make the lead hold up, but answered the call on both occasions. In total, KC sacked Holcomb 5.0 times and held Minnesota to 252 yards of total offense and only 129 passing yards in the 13-10 win.

The Todd Haley era officially began on a rainy evening at Arrowhead. While the Chiefs outgained the Texans in total yardage by a 307-to-280 margin, Houston that prevailed on the scoreboard by a 16-10 margin. Houston won the toss to open the game, but Kansas City dispatched the Texans from the field as CB Maurice Leggett sacked QB Matt Schaub for an 11-yard loss, forcing a punt. In his debut in a Chiefs uniform, QB Matt Cassel connected with WR Terrance Copper for a 12-yard gain to give Kansas City its initial first down of the evening. Kansas City was forced to punt as P Dustin Colquitt booted a 51-yard bomb to pin the Texans at their own six-yard line. Houston was unfazed by the poor field position, registering four first downs on its next possession to get into scoring territory. A 16-yard pass from QB Matt Schaub to RB Chris Brown, followed by a 15-yard penalty for a horse-collar tackle was the big play of the drive. On third and one from the Chiefs two-yard line, Brown punched the ball in for a TD to cap a 12-play, 94-yard scoring drive, giving the Texans a 7-0 advantage. The Chiefs had possession going into the second quarter, but went three and out. After a booming Colquitt punt of 52 yards, S Jarrad Page knocked down a QB Dan Orlovsky pass to stall Houston’s next drive. On the ensuing possession the Chiefs fumbled a first-down snap giving the Texans the ball at the Kansas City 24-yard line. Orlovsky connected on an 11-yard pass to WR David Anderson, setting up a 23-yard K Kris Brown field goal to give Houston a 10-0 lead. QB Brodie Croyle entered the game with 5:40 to play in the second quarter. Kansas City was forced to punt for the fourth time of the half on Croyle’s first possession under center. Houston then drove seven plays for 41 yards setting up Brown’s second field goal of the half, this time from 42 yards out to give Houston a 13-0 advantage. Croyle rallied the Chiefs in the two-minute drill, connecting with WR Dwayne Bowe for 14 yards. Two plays later, found WR Rodney Wright to set up K Ryan Succop’s first NFL FG attempt. Succop’s 48-yard FG capped a nine-play, 49-yard drive to cut the Texans advantage to 13-3. Houston held the ball for 18:43 in the first half compared to a time of possession of 11:17 for Kansas City. After receiving the second-half kickoff, the Chiefs offense began to move with Croyle at the helm. Four different receivers caught passes but the Texans held strong, stopping KC’s drive at their 24-yard line after the Chiefs failed to convert on a fourth-and-two. After forcing another Texans punt, a fumble by RB Dantrell Savage put an end to Kansas City’s scoring threat. The Chiefs defense held firm, forcing Houston to its third field goal of the night as Brown’s 30-yard FG with 0:21 left in the third quarter gave Houston a 16-3 lead. In the fourth quarter, QB Tyler Thigpen took over and sparked the offense using his legs to rush twice for 22 yards on a 10-play, 76-yard drive that resulted in a one-yard touchdown pass to TE Brad Cottam to cut the Houston advantage to 16-10. Kansas City had one final opportunity for the win, getting the ball at its own 24-yard line with 1:30 to play. Thigpen’s desperation heave on fourth-and-22 was picked off by CB David Pittman, sealing the Texans victory.
