There are several indicators of high performing schools. As we look at Kamiakin High school we are proud to say that many of these indicators describe us!

Having a clear and shared focus is the first indicator of a high performing school. All of our efforts at Kamiakin are aimed at getting students ready for college, ready for work and ready to be citizens.

The second indicator is high standards and expectations for all students. We push our stu-dents to take the most rigorous classes that they can handle and encourage all students to take full academic loads and challenge themselves. This May, 472 Advanced Placement tests will be taken by Kamiakin students. This is an incredible academic feat and represents a huge investment of time and energy by students who choose these rigorous classes. One way we are celebrating our students is by having the Senior Awards Assembly on May 22nd. This will be a gathering for the entire school and community to come and celebrate the academic accomplishments of the class of 2013.

Collaboration and communication between staff is another indicator. Kamiakin has had a total of 16 early release dates dedicated to the staff improving instruction and working together. Much of the time this year has been spent engaged in reflecting on where we are at and the direction that we are going.

Another indicator is having curriculum, instruction and assessment aligned with state stand-ards. The most visible indicator of this is how Kamiakin students performed on the HSPE/COE this spring. We will be getting those results back in early June and look forward to seeing how our students performed.

A high level of community involvement is another characteristic. Last month, 93% of our stu-dents were represented at Student Led Conferences. The great community support that Ka-miakin receives is one of the key elements that sets us apart from other schools.

The ultimate community involvement, of course, is Commencement. We look forward to shar-ing this special day with all the members of the class of 2013 as well as all that have support-ed them through their journey. Commencement is on June 1st at the Toyota Center. Doors will open at 12:00.

While graduation is a celebration for every student and their family, our graduates represent our community supported focus on high standards and expectations which results in individuals who are prepared to move forward and be successful in life.

Prescription drug use is legal ONLY for the person that the drugs are prescribed for, and there is a good reason for this. First, your health-care provider knows your medical history and can tell you how to use the prescription drug safely. Second, your health-care provider can keep track of how the drug taken affects you. Abusing prescription drugs is always a bad idea! The abuse of prescription drugs is not only risky, but can be deadly. Parents and teens need to understand that when prescribed medications are used to get high or for purposes other than what they are intended, they are every bit as dangerous as “street drugs.” Prescription drugs come with risks and side effects-even when they are used as prescribed for legitimate medical purposes. Hundreds and possibly thousands of deaths have been attributed to the illegal use of prescription drugs, and when prescribed drugs are used by or distributed to individuals without prescriptions, they are every bit as illegal. NEVER let anyone use your medications!

If a student is prescribed a medication by his/her health-care provider, and that medication needs to be taken during the school day, the student is required to bring the medication along with the Medication at School form signed by both the doctor and the parent to the main office of the school that he/she attends for safe keeping while the student is attending school. This is also true for over-the-counter medications. To do otherwise would be in violation of a Kennewick School District Policy that forbids students to keep medications on their person while in school. A violation of this policy could result in the student being suspended from school.

For more information on this and other drug-related topics visit www.theantidrug.com
