January 2016 Page 1 Volume 30-1 A Monthly Newsletter Published by the RoadRunner Prospector’s Club January 2016 Happy New Year. I hope you all had a good 2015 and are ready for the new year. The Club managed to get done everything that had to be done with substantial effort by the Board and other volunteers. The social events, meaning the Spring Picnic in April and the North Country “get together” in September were a big success. I believe the Christmas Party on December 17 th at the Italian Club was outstanding due in large part to the efforts of our Vice President Karl Weber and his wife (our new Secretary) Faye, as well as the other volunteers. For those of you that did not make it, you missed out on a good party, a good diner and a very good and en- tertaining magic show. Also, Christmas music was provided by Rick Meisel, one of our hard- working members that has helped out in many areas in the past. He was very good. We also had a gold drawing so if you were not present you missed out on a 50/50 chance of drawing a nugget. All of the above only cost $15.00 a person and everything was well worth the price. The Board decided to have the event inside this year and have it a dinner event, ra- ther than a catered luncheon at a park. In December the weather is chancy; it can be cold, or worse, cold and rainy. We were lucky every year I have been a member. However, based on the member turnout and the comments I heard, I believe we made a wise choice this year and in addition, we kept the price the same. As to the coming year, we have outings planned as set forth in the Newsletter. In addi- tion the Board is trying to organize a “dig”. These are always well attended, but require much more advance planning than you would commonly believe. If anyone has a suggestion as to where, (meaning what claim), we should have a “dig” please let the Board know your thoughts. Do consider that any location that we select must have a good area for parking and be able to be reached by a pick-up truck or other high clearance vehicle as well as a truck delivering the porta-potties and the digging equipment. These requirements rule out many of our claims as suitable for a “dig”. but be of good cheer, there is much gold out there on our claims; its just not in any one location. If you have any suggestions pass them along. We have to plan very far in advance. Lastly, I want to remind everyone that the annual claims/dredging survey is enclosed with this newsletter. This survey is very import as it tells us what claims are being used and also gives us the dredging data required by the Corps of Engineers. Please take some time to fill out this document and return it to the club in a timely fashion. That is about it for this month. Stay safe out there and I wish you good prospecting. - Frederick Horn, President Presidents Corner

Happy New Year. I hope you all had a good 2015 and are ready for the new year. The Club

managed to get done everything that had to be done with substantial effort by the Board and

other volunteers. The social events, meaning the Spring Picnic in April and the North Country

“get together” in September were a big success. I believe the Christmas Party on December

17th at the Italian Club was outstanding due in large part to the efforts of our Vice President

Karl Weber and his wife (our new Secretary) Faye, as well as the other volunteers. For those of

you that did not make it, you missed out on a good party, a good diner and a very good and en-

tertaining magic show. Also, Christmas music was provided by Rick Meisel, one of our hard-

working members that has helped out in many areas in the past. He was very good.

We also had a gold drawing so if you were not present you missed out on a 50/50 chance of

drawing a nugget. All of the above only cost $15.00 a person and everything was well worth

the price. The Board decided to have the event inside this year and have it a dinner event, ra-

ther than a catered luncheon at a park. In December the weather is chancy; it can be cold, or

worse, cold and rainy. We were lucky every year I have been a member. However, based on

the member turnout and the comments I heard, I believe we made a wise choice this year and in

addition, we kept the price the same.

As to the coming year, we have outings planned as set forth in the Newsletter. In addi-

tion the Board is trying to organize a “dig”. These are always well attended, but require much

more advance planning than you would commonly believe. If anyone has a suggestion as to

where, (meaning what claim), we should have a “dig” please let the Board know your thoughts.

Do consider that any location that we select must have a good area for parking and be able to

be reached by a pick-up truck or other high clearance vehicle as well as a truck delivering the

porta-potties and the digging equipment. These requirements rule out many of our claims as

suitable for a “dig”. but be of good cheer, there is much gold out there on our claims; its just

not in any one location. If you have any suggestions pass them along. We have to plan very far

in advance.

Lastly, I want to remind everyone that the annual claims/dredging survey is enclosed with

this newsletter. This survey is very import as it tells us what claims are being used and also

***** Annual Claims/Dredge Survey *****

Enclosed with this newsletter is the annual claims/dredge survey form. The survey will

help the club determine which claims are being utilized and also will provide the information

needed to complete the yearly dredge report that the club is required to send the Army Corps of

Engineers. We will be using this survey annually.

The claims we are able to dredge on have boxes with bold lines. The hours and cubic yards

are your best estimate.

The survey will be in the January, February, and March newsletters and can be filled out

and returned electronically, printed out and mailed, or brought to a meeting. Mailed in forms

must be received at the club office by March 16th. Blank survey forms will also be available at

the January, February, and March meetings. The deadline to have this information back to the

club is the day of the March meeting. Our dredge report is due on March 31st.

Please take the time to complete the survey. It will greatly help the club.

Holiday Dinner

The first annul Roadrunner Christmas dinner was a huge success. President Fred Horn wel-

comed more than 200 club members and guests to the sold-out event. All enjoyed the buffet

dinner consisting of cordon blue chicken and beef brisket. The professional entertainment for

the evening was club member, Richard Meisel, who played and sang holiday music throughout

the evening. We also enjoyed our feature performer from Scottsdale, Craig Davis's Circus of

Illusions. President Fred handed out appreciation plaques to departing board members Carol

and Bill Nickel, Bob Wierzal, and Bruce Meyers. The board also awarded President Fred a

plaque for his many years of service. Thank all of you who worked hard before, during and

after the event. We had a wonderful time and look forward to seeing you next year.

Map 10 - Aquarius Extension Claims Marking

December is a time when many are busy shopping, trimming trees, decorating the house and

yard, and planning for family get-togethers. But for Roadrunner Volunteers our agenda is quite

different. It is Friday, December 11th, and 7 of us are meeting at the turnoff to the Aquarius

Extension claims on Map 10 to mark the new corner boundaries. This should be challenging.

The roads are rough and the terrain is quite hilly. A quick meeting to discuss our plan of attack

and exchange maps. The weather is not cooperating….. cold and windy for sure. We split into

3 groups – each with a 2-way radio for keeping in touch. We take the vehicles as far as we can

and then it’s hiking from there on. GPS in hand, we forge on to “get ‘er done”! Three hours

and 9 markers later, we all meet back on a plateau to unwind.

George and Richard break out food and drink; Wayne and Terry are busy talking about shoot-

ing, Jim flies his drone and Ron tells me about how much he loves to get out. After fending off

requests for pizza delivery, I thank the crew for a job well done and remind them they will be

put in for a VIP Nugget drawing.

If you would like to volunteer in the future please contact me, Bob Hood at dadthefisher-

[email protected]

PS……………Ron Webb, who was with us today, was the annual winner of the ¼ oz VIP

Nugget awarded for claims maintenance volunteer work during 2015.

Gold Fever 1882-2015 Upper Wolf Creek RRPC Map 6

Many of our club’s claims are accessed through the sleepy town of Mayer, Arizona. Our

claims on Map 6 are among those that follow Wolf Creek and Turkey Creek. Mayer was

named after Joe Mayer, an entrepreneur who established a store, post office and even a hotel

due to the thriving gold strikes in the area. Frank Murphy’s dream of building a railroad all the

way to Crown King from Mayer was also affecting the town growth. Eastern newspapers en-

ticed construction workers to come to Arizona to build Murphy’s impossible dream. When a

rich vein of gold was uncovered most of the workers abandoned their jobs and became pro-

spectors. The old rails were pulled up in 1927 and Forest Service Road #67 now takes its place

in history.

Leaving Mayer on this road, you will find the center of our claims, Betty #5, about 8 miles

ahead. Large forested areas are there at an altitude of 5,400’. Since this is the Prescott Nation-

al Forest, you must have a plan of operation with you at all times when prospecting. With the

exception of Rays Right Place, dredging is permitted. This is a great area to escape the summer

heat of Phoenix.

Watson Spring Road follows access to the upper claims but be aware that the terrain gets very

hilly and steep and you will need to carry your equipment. There are few pull offs and the road

gets quite narrow and steep near the top. Be aware of private property and be respectful.

Several members have had luck prospecting these claims and we have had many club picnics

on them. Get out and give them a try!

Cautions and warnings:

Wear your badge.

Take lots of drinking water and prepare to get winded easily ……altitude +5,000 FT.

Claims near private property...be mindful and respect others.

Leave a prospecting plan at home so others know where you are.

Leave no holes!

Have fun and find GOLD!
