Are you ready to take a trip to Racha Island? If so, then let’s go! My friends and I met up at Ao Chalong Pier to board the speed boat for Racha Island and 45 minutes later, we arrived at the island’s Ao Tue Pier.

After placing our luggage in the rooms, we set off to explore the island. The journey began at Ao Patok, a popular beach where everyone visiting this island must see.

Ao Patok’scharm lies in its long, white beach that fringes the spectacular, blue water. When sunlight hits the surface, it glitters like diamonds.

There is also a gorgeous viewpoint which can be reached via hiking trail that gently slopes upwards. The remarkable view of the endless blue ocean is so wonderful that we felt so appreciative of Mother Nature’s creation.

As noon approaches, AoPatok would be filled with visitors who come for the day trip. They brightened up the beach with colorful bikinis and shorts as they swam, sun-bathed and relaxed as they pleased.

After having admired Ao Patok’s sceneries, we paid a visit to Ao Siam. We strolled along a tree-lined path for 15 minutes and reached a powdery beach with crashing waves as though inviting us to come and join in the fun.

Ao Siam is shaped like a crescent moon with long stretch of beach. It is easy to find a quiet, romantic corner around here to snuggle up and unwind with your special someone.

Our next stop was at AoKonkae. There is no beach in this area, only trees of different sizes and rock boulders that provide shelter for fishes and marine dwellers of myriad species. These animals also act as fine tourist magnets.

Looking out from the bay, we could see a dozen boats bobbing in the water. These boats are waiting for their clients to enjoy snorkeling in the clear water filled with amazing corals and friendly fishes. The area is also renowned as a favorite spot for scuba divers.

We walked further to Ao Tue, located close by. A steady stream of visitors trekked up its shore, their smiley faces showing obvious signs of happiness. Some stopped to take pictures so they could capture this blissful and special moment on Racha Island.

On this bright morning, we set off for ThapLamu Pier of Phang-Ngato join a very noble cause. This cause was to free the turtles back into the sea whilst enjoying the beautiful, sheltered sceneries of their home on Huyong Island. The island is a part of The Similan Islands which is under the protection of the Royal Thai Navy, 3rd area.

Lieutenant Commander Nimitr Chuwongse of the Royal Thai Navy- 3rdarea, was the leader of our trip. We helped him load supplies like fresh food, dried food and 85 small but healthy turtles onto Wang Nai Battleship and proceeded ahead to their new home on Huyong Island.

After four hours, we finally reached our destination. The picturesque scenery of the placid, clear water and white sandy beach was beautiful beyond imagination.

We excitedly loaded supplies and the baby turtles onto dinghy boats and soon landed on the dreamy island. It was a vision of perfection everywhere we turned. We breathed in the fresh air and mentally recorded the dream-like sceneries in our minds.

A voice calling out for help to transport the turtles to their nursery suddenly broke the trance. After the last turtle was safely in his new den, wewent around to search for a good spot to set up our tent where we would spend the night.

We were feeling envi-ous of the turtles that get to live on this private island and thrive in such a beautiful environment when suddenly someone shouted, “I wish I was a turtle!”

หลงมอคำาฝมอพทหารเรอทอรอย มวาก..มาก พวกเรากมานอนผงลมรมทะเล อากาศเยนสบายจนเผลอหลบ ตนมาอกทเทยงคน ถงเวลาเดนเตาพอด (เดนเตาคอการไปเดนดเตาทจะมาวางไขบนบกโดยเราตองเฝาดแบบเงยบๆ)

The naval officers cooked us a scrumptious dinner and we were thoroughly impressed by their culinary skills. Stomachs full, we took a rest on the beach and fell asleep. By the time we woke up, it was midnight and time to go for turtle watching (this is a process of observing turtles laying eggs on the beach from a distance).

Unfortunately, we did not see any turtles laying eggs that night; but the next morning, we got to witness a couple of giant turtles enjoying their mating ritual up close.

As the day progressed, the huge battleship brought in more people from different sectors for the event. Vice Admiral TharathornKajitsuwan, the third naval area commander, conducted the opening ceremony thus formally commencing the ‘Turtle-Freeing’ event for 2013.

จากนนกมการขดไขเตาจากหลมฟกทเหลาทหารนำามาพกเอาไว ยงขดยงตนเตน ลกลงไปประมาณ 60 ซม. เตาตวนอยๆ จากไขกออกมาลมตาดโลก บางสวนปลอยลงสทะเล ทเหลอนำามาอนบาลไวเพอศกษาและอนรกษตอไป

The next activity was to dig up turtle eggs buried in designated areas by the naval officers. Digging down about 60 cm, we were excited to find tiny little hatchlings crawling out of their shells. Some would be let out into the ocean while others will be kept in the nursery for further studies and conservation.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for finally arrived. Each of us brought the little turtles to the beach where they can start a whole new life. It was a moment filled with joy and laughter for everyone and we could not thank the navy enough for organizing such a beautiful event. As a bonus, Thais believe that freeing turtles will bring longevity into their lives.

เคลดลบการปลอยคอตองใหนองเตาเดนจากชายหาดลงทะเลเองระหวางทางทเดนลงทะเล เตาจะจำากลนและมเคมบางอยางทำาใหจดจำาททมนเกด เมอโตมนจะกลบมาวางไขทเกาะหยงเหมอนเดม ฟงแลวทงกบความมหศจรรยของเจาเตาจรงๆ

The secret to freeing turtles is to let them crawl down the beach into the water by themselves. This allows them to imprint certain instinctive memories of scent and direction so that they can return to Huyong Island to lay their own eggs in the future. We found that to be a genuinely amazing and beautiful work of nature.

The last activity was to collect trash littered along the beach. Everyone chipped in and tirelessly went to work, breaking last year’s record. We all agreed that working in this beautiful environment certainly refueled strength for everyone.

The boat ride from Rawai Beach took 15 minutes to reach the island. First, we stopped to pay our respects to Luang Por Sua, the head monk of the island’s monastery for good luck then went ahead on a tour around the island. Our guide for this trip was a young man named Tong.

We trekked up-hill until we reached the replica of the Emerald Buddha, a statue highly revered by the people. Not far away is the Tah Toh Saeh shrine, a place of worship for the Muslims, and next to that is the path which leads to another viewpoint on the island.

On the other side of the island are a golden chedi and a Buddha statue in standing posi-tion. From here, we could see Laem Promth-ep - which was fascinating as not many get to see the viewpoint from this angle.

มมนมทางลงบนไดเพอไปชมรอยพระพทธบาท เสนทางอาจลำาบากกายแตไมลำาบากใจทจะกาวเดน บรเวณนจะเปนหนาผาลมพดมาเรอยๆ ทำาใหรสกเยนสบาย ไหนจะเสยงคลนทซดมาเปนระรอกกระทบโขดหนเหมอนบรรเลงเพลงตอนรบ

There was also a stairway leading down to Buddha’s footprint. The cliff-side path was a little challenging but we were content to follow it as the cool breeze and the sound of the waves made it all worthwhile.

We finally reached the footprint and found that it was slightly blurry so the guide led us to see another one located by the beach. It was actually on a rock so we had to wait for the right moment to cross over in order to avoid getting hit by the waves.

On the large rock boulder, we could see the footprint quite clearly; and suddenly, the tired feeling was replaced by a sense of overwhelming happiness. It was amazing that in the midst of all this nature of the island, there was the 5th footprint of our dear Lord Buddha.

On the way back, there was another large Buddha statue so we didn’t miss the chance to take a few photos to add to our scrapbook. Our guide also advised that those who wish to go swimming should avoid the beach in front of the temple but for those who wish to explore the island further, he’d be happy to lead the way.

Eนองโตงเลาวาชวงเยนๆ พระอาทตยตกทเกาะแกวพสดารแหงนจะสวยมาก มชาวตางชาตชอบเหมาเรอมาชมตะวนลบฟาทน ไวครงหนาเราตองมาพสจนกนอกครงNong Tong, the guide, also said that the sunset from this island is so beautiful that many tourists would hire a boat purposely to see it. We will be back to prove this next time.

Today’s trip had been full of adventure and fulfilling at the same time as we got to see Buddha’s 5th footprint at Namnatee, a monument of worship for us Buddhists. We will surely be back again someday.

So, we brought ourselves to the ‘Fly-ing Hanuman’, a zip line park with the signature monkey head greeting visi-tors at the entrance. We then entered the lobby where guests must fill out forms at the registration desk. There are 3 programs to choose from ranging from mildly exciting to adrenaline quenching. Today, we chose to go all the way to base 28.

Our gang trekked up through the thick forest and reached first base. Our hearts started pounding as we had to walk across the tall tree-bridge; we didn’t even dare to look down. From there, we swung from tree to tree, starting from short distances then further and further as we proceeded. Fear is now replaced by a mad rush of fun at every turn.

Next, we walked up a spiral staircase and abseiled 40 meters down below; the tallest base in southern Thailand. I really loved this base even though my heart was pounding so hard when the sling stopped right before I hit the ground. After that was the Sky Skate-board base where views of Phuket’s ocean can be seen from afar.

The final challenge was soaring across 400 meters on the longest zip line. Here, our instructor advised that we should let loose, have fun and scream like a Hanuman or spread our arms as though to fly off into the sunset. Each of us had absolutely enough adrenaline rush to last ourselves a lifetime. Come and see for yourself how much fun zip line flying can be!

Thinking about the rustic wooden bridge partly hidden among lush, green fauna growing wild, I was suddenly overwhelmed with a sense of happiness. Not wanting this to be just a fickle of my imagination, my friends and I got together and decided to see the real thing at ‘Sa Morrakot’ or Emerald Pool located within the wildlife sanctuary at Amphur Klong Tom, Krabi Province.

We started the journey through an open forest till we came upon the Emerald Pool, one of Unseen Thailand’s top attractions and highlight of this forest. The water is so clear you can see the bottom of the pool that range from one to two meters deep.

Today’s activity was both fun and relaxing, but mostly relaxing because the forest atmosphere filled with trees, ferns and wild orchids were so amazing. We also learned a lot from reading signs that explained about each species of plants along the way.

From the Emerald Pool, we came upon the Underground Spring Pool from where the Emerald Pool originated. Water springs from beneath the ground because of a crack on the earth’s surface. And whenever someone claps their hands loudly beside the pool, they will see more water spurting out.

To make sure I brought something worthwhile, I got together with a few friends and headed off to Maythee’s to find snacks which can be universally enjoyed. This shop is one of the island’s original manufacturers of high quality, processed cashew nuts. The owners, Mr. Maythee and Mrs. Boonma Jathumaythee, are real gurus who also initiated the ideas of flavor-coating the nuts and invented contraptions like the shelling machine sitting at the corner.

Amazingly, there are 14 flavors of cashew nuts available here. These range from sweet like honey and chocolate to the spicy ones like Tom Yum and Wasabi. All are cholesterol-free as they are baked instead of fried. We sampled and bought different flavors but the one I liked most was the 5-flavor-in-one gift set.

One of my friends especially loved the cashew nut chili paste and original flavored dehydrated soup stock. Each of us spent quite a lot but we didn’t mind be-cause all products here are locally made, nicely pack-aged, fresh and of high quality. The shop also has other souvenir items like key chains in the shape of cashew nuts; so basically, you can’t escape them.

Tired from all the shopping, we sat down for some refreshments. Of course, the vendor offered us cool cashew juice in lovely glass bottles. They were totally delicious and very beneficial to the health. A must try indeed!

Having been in the business for 40 years, the Jathumaythees are true pioneers of the cashew nut industry as they keep finding new ways to add twists to this plain food item. It is no wonder that their original shop on Dilok Uthit (near Expo), established since 1972, became too small as their customer base grew. Now they opened a second branch on Surin Road to cater to group tours and large crowds so that everyone can get a taste of good quality cashew nuts to their hearts’ content. For me, I bet that my friends at the high school reunion are really going to love them.

A small shop in Soi Surin 4 is the location where the Taosors are made and sold daily in large quantities so anyone who wants to buy them in large amounts must place an order in advance. Having retired from her former profession of school teacher, Mae Boontham would keep her customers’ orders on a blackboard and not on computers the way people do nowadays.

ขนมเตาสอยหอแมบญธรรมมสองไสใหเลอกรบประทาน คอไสเคมกบไสหวาน ไสเคมจะมสวนผสมของ ถวเขยวบด หอมเจยว พรกไทยปน นำาตาล นำามนพช โดยการนำาสวนผสมมาควในกระทะใหแหง ใชเวลาประมาณ 30 นาทกจะไดไสเคมทมรสชาตกลมกลอม พรอมกรนกลนพรกไทยและหอมเจยว สวนไสหวานกจะไมหวานจนแสบไส แตจะหวานละมนละไมดวยสวนผสมทลงตวของถวเขยวบดผสมนำาตาล ถาใครชอบไขเคมกเลอกแบบไสหวานใสไขเคมดวยกจะอรอยไปอกแบบ

You can find both sweet and savory fillings for her Taosor. The savory ones are made from green beans, fried shallots, pepper, sugar and vegetable oil all stir-fried together in a wok for 30 minutes until the mixture dries up and produces a nice aroma. The mildly sweet filling is made of green beans and sugar; and the more special ones have salted egg yolks for more flavor.
