The tradition of Vegetarian Festival (Jia Shai) first took place in Kathu village a few hundred years ago by Chinese immigrants who settled in the area as tin miners. They believed in worshipping the gods i.e. the gods of the earth and sky who supposedly look after the well-being of their families and village.

Whenever calamity strikes, they would invite the gods down from heaven for protection in exchange for doing good deeds like refraining from eating meat, thus discouraging the killing of another life. This tradition is passed on and widely practiced until today.

We wish to invite our readers to be a part of this sacred, annual event where by this year, The Phuket Vegetarian Festival will take place between 15-25 October, 2012. Throughout Phuket Island, people will be dressed in white whilst taking the vow of sanctity and refraining from eating meat. Visitors to the island at this time ought to pack a set of white clothing to join in the vow or just to blend in.

Not to be missed during the festival is the parading of the gods or Ew Geng ceremony. Every morning during this period, the different shrines would arrange a parade and travel along the roads passing by houses. The locals would set up a table in front of their homes with offerings and pray for the gods blessings and good fortune.

They also believe in lighting up fire-crackers to welcome the gods as they pass by and to ensure that their prayers are heard. This practice is always fascinating to watch and visitors consider it a very colorful part of the festival.

The Fire-Walking Ceremony or Goy Hoy is another sacred practice which is an integral part of the festival. The performers believe that unwavering faith can prevent them from getting burned, and that the fire will purify their body from evil. This dangerous ritual is performed only by psychic mediums or Heavenly Warriors and always manages to draw large crowds of curious spectators.

In the evenings, a different ceremony called Goy Han or practice of eliminating bad luck is performed. This is done by each individual bringing a piece of self-cut paper doll to represent themselves together with a twenty five satang coin and a Chinese chives plant to the shrine. The Heavenly Warrior would perform a ritual with them and then brand a seal (Ta In) onto the back of the individuals shirt.

It is believed that those whod undergone the ritual would not only be rid of bad luck but also be filled with good fortune and prosperity. We also noticed that a large number of Phuket locals have seals on the back of their shirts, so visitors planning to join the festival should try it at once.

On the last day of the festival, the sending-off ritual is performed in the evening. This is to send the gods back to heaven after they descended to earth to bless the people. The sacred ceremony is filled with so much excitement, faith and belief that most visitors claim they had never experienced anything like it before.

From 9 pm until midnight, you can hear non-stop sounds of fire crackers blasting throughout Phuket. The loud noise implies that it will reach heavens door so the gods can witness strong faith of the people and their determination to keep it alive for years to come.

Just after six in the morning, my friends and I got together and hopped into the old Jeep, determined to look for a lovely spot we had heard off. We drove along Petchkasem Road from Phang-Nga to Tai Muang District and turned into a small street around the 32nd or 33rd kilometer road mark. As expected, the 2 kilometer path lead us to what we were looking for, the lovely Lampi Waterfall.

This beautiful creation of nature is a mid-sized waterfall with loud gushes of water splashing down its four tiers. At the base, we found a vast pool of water that seemed to beckon us to go in for a swim.

We stared at the sparkling, clear water and jumped into the refreshing pool where we splashed around at each other like children. For once, we didnt have to worry about the suns ray as the tall trees provided shade wherever we needed.

Looking around, we could see other tourists also enjoying a dip in the clear water. While some hum softly to themselves, others are breathing in the fresh forest air to cleanse their lungs.

In the background, the sounds of trickling water and birds chirping in the distant seemed to enhance the blissfulness even further. Large, old tress and rare plant species fill the forest and provide a natural habitat for the wild animals living in the area. We found the atmosphere to be particularly lovely on a rainy day like this.

  • ECO TRAVEL054

  • For those who dont feel like getting wet, they could take a leisure stroll on the wooden bridge or pick a quiet spot to enjoy a good book. The romantic atmosphere is also perfect for spending relaxing a day out with your loved one.

After a few hours in the water, we decided to come up for a rest. There are decent eateries around the waterfall that cater to hungry tourists, but we had a better plan for ourselves. We found a good spot to spread our mats and unpacked our picnic baskets filled with all kinds of goodies.

  • ECO TRAVEL058

After everyone was thoroughly fed, we put the litter in the bin and cleaned up after ourselves. We are very much aware of environmental preservation and felt that it is everyones duty to preserve nature for both the animals and the next generations.

Talay Waag, or Parting Sea, is an incredible natural occurrence which takes place between the three islands of Koh Gai, Koh Tab and Koh Moh which belong to Podas cluster of islands in Krabi Province. To witness this wonder, we only needed to join a day tour from Phuket.

The parting sea takes place only 5 days before or after the 15th cycle of the lunar calendar. During this time, the ocean water would recede, exposing a sand dune which links the 3 islands together. Visitors could even enjoy a stroll on this sand dune when this happens.

At 9 am, we boarded a boat from Phuket and enjoyed a scenic ride in the vast ocean. After an hour or so, we arrived at our destination which consist-ed of 3 islands that pop up out of nowhere, adjoined by a strip of sparkling white sand dune. With excitement, all the passengers got off and hurried to the sand strip for closer inspection.

Fully fed and satisfied, my friends and I moved over to the alfresco bar to enjoy drinks while the gorgeous sun sets over the horizon. I would recommend this beautiful restaurant to anyone who wants to enjoy excellent food at good prices in a relaxing seaside setting. Chai Lay Bar & Grill is managed by Mr. Krit Nak-Udom who was our gracious host throughout the evening.

    Hello kitty Laguna Khaolak !

Join us today on a shopping tour for some beautiful Japanese Saori Fabrics. The name might bring to mind the cutesy Japanese kitten, Hello Kitty, but this is certainly not the case. The shop where these cloths are sold is located within Laguna Khaolak Hotel where a group of housewives diligently weave each yard using a new Japanese technique called Saori.

The locals told us that after the Tsunami struck this area a few years back, a foundation called Maya Kotamee found a way to help out villagers by teaching them the Japanese cloth-weaving technique which stresses on free-style of design for unlimited creativity.

    Laguna Khaolak ...

The Laguna Khaolak Hotel has played an important role in supporting the project by encouraging the villagers to set up shops with live weaving demonstrations in the hotel. So if you happen to be visiting the area, be sure to stop by and take a look. These products of the Phang-Nga villagers are crafted with creativity and so reasonably priced you wont be able to resist.

    ....

The rose-petal pink pastry shown in the illustration is one of Phukets local delicacies which is colorful not only in look, but also in taste. Though they are not commonly consumed in Thailand, they are readily available in Phuket since the island is inhabited by Chinese immigrants who brought their customs along with them centuries ago.

The local Phuketians call this pastry Red Turtle Cake as it is made of red flour, pressed into turtle-shaped mold. The cute little things are also easy to make. First, mix sticky rice dough with water then knead; add a bit of vegetable oil and sprinkle a few drops (or more) of red food coloring. Knead some more until the mixture blends together well.

  • CUISINE182

Next, prepare the stuffing by boiling green beans in sugar-added water. Keep stirring and let simmer until content has evaporated enough to roll into little balls. Wrap the green bean balls with red dough then roll them over rice flour. This will keep them from sticking to the turtle-shaped molds when they are being pressed.

After that, knock the molds a few times to loosen the pastries then lay them on banana leaves for visual effect. Steam for 7 minutes then brush with oil to keep the cakes from sticking when placed inside the bag.
