Course Description (describe the course, focusing on content):
A program that prepares students with the skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed for employment in fashion and textile design occupations. Instruction includes such topics as industry regulations; identification and analysis of textiles and textile products; elements and principals of design; garment construction; merchandising and fashion forecasting. Students develop skills to illustrate designs; create color charts with interesting pattern and texture variations; design apparel (including draping, pattern making, and grading); and develop a merchandise line. Integrated in the instruction will be specific applications of the career performance standards.

1. Understands the contributions of major fashion designers to the fashion industry
2. Applies knowledge of textile fibers, fabrics and finishes to design or construction of apparel or accessories
3. Understands how to apply these basic elements, principles and theories (elements & principles of design, color theory) to fashion and textile design.
4. Uses, modifies, or re-designs commercial patterns to create fashion garments or accessories to reflect personal design ideas
5. Demonstrates ability to take accurate body measurements.
6. Selects appropriate fabric, materials, tools, and equipment for chosen design.
7. Constructs apparel and accessories through use of appropriate custom construction techniques and equipment.
8. Attempts to predict future fashion trends.
9. Demonstrates proper use and care of equipment, supplies, tools, and materials.
10. Is able to prepare a resume.
11. Is able to accurately fill out a job application
12. Is familiar with various fashion design related career options.

Instructional Methods
Methods of instruction will include, but are not limited to:
1. Direct instruction (lecture, reading, labs, and investigations, writing – reports, journals, analyses, essay – speaking, presentations, guest speakers).
2. Laboratory investigations and project using educational courseware and computer technology.
3. Team teaching including assisted instruction from university, business, and community partners.
4. Community – based research projects with professional mentors.
5. Use variety of instructional materials and resources including electronic media, professional journals and reference materials, textbooks and other print information.
6. Self-directed, cooperative, and collaborative learning to increase responsibility of students for their own learning.
7. Student presentations, exhibits, and competitions – both team and individual.
8. Embedded assessment as a learning tool.
9. SDAIE (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English).
10. Differentiated instruction of exceptional students.
Evaluation Procedures
Assessment opportunities, which allow continuous evaluation of students’ progress, will be embedded throughout the course and should be a learning experience. All students will be expected to achieve mastery of all topics; often, demonstrations of mastery will occur in a public forum. The following strategies, which include both formal and informal assessment techniques will include, but are not limited to:
1. Performance – based assessments such as experiments, demonstrations, discussions, debates simulations, and projects.
2. Student presentations, exhibits, and competitions – both team and individual
3. On-going and cumulative portfolio record of project and component investigative accomplishments.
4. Written tests with a variety of short answer and essay questions.
