PROGRAMME AIMS This programme aims to

provide designers with an

in-depth understanding

of global fashion trends

and requirements.

Emphasis is placed on

design conceptualisation,

independent research,

creative application and

artistic expression, and a

design-focused environment

is provided to students to

obtain a range of design-

oriented, decision-making

skills that are relevant

to the fashion industry.

PROGRAMME CHARACTERISTICS Students develop skills that

underpin their existing

design and industry

knowledge, and learn to

appreciate the demands

placed on designers in

this dynamic industry. In-

depth personal projects

allow students to explore

issues of design practice,

technology and theory. The

programme fosters a broad

range of critical thinking

and creative awareness

skills. When combined,

these elements provide

the basis that make our

graduates highly sought

after design professionals.

Four major subject

areas are available:

• Fashion Design;

• Knitwear Design;

• Textile Design; and

• Bodywear Design

PROGRAMME STRUCTUREThe programme consists of

three major components:

• Core subjects - five

subjects in Semester

1 and two subjects

in Semester 2;

• Personal project - written

report, design portfolio

and design collection,

developed in one of

the four major subject

areas, with guidance

provided by subject

specialists/tutors; and

• Final assessment

and presentation.

COMPULSORY SUBJECTSEvolution of Design TrendsThis subject aims to provide

professional knowledge

on how fashion design

trends have evolved in

close relation with socio-

cultural contexts throughout

history. Students analyse

and interpret cues from

designer collections, trade

shows, culture, society,

the streets and influential

world events to develop

their own concepts and

trend information.

Design ConceptThe subject aims to develop

critical thinking in students

in their approach towards

design development.

Through project-based

learning, students will

acquire knowledge

and understanding of

relevant fashion and

textile requirements and

demonstrate intellectual

synthesis of diverse

modes of research

that would benefit the

development of relevant

designs and products.

Visual Design CommunicationThis subject aims to assist

students to develop a

professional design portfolio

for the fashion and textile

industry. Students will

examine the work of other

designers, possibility of

using various types of

multi-media to enhance the

overall visualisation of their

work, and different methods

of visual presentation.

Creative TextilesThis subject aims to provide

students with opportunities

to explore creative textile

design through practice.

Students will be encouraged

to integrate traditional and

contemporary techniques to

create unique approaches

and individualistic design

styles. The subject will

raise the awareness of

students of textile design

for the commercial

fashion industry.

Design Collection PreparationThis subject aims to assist

students to establish a

personal route of specialism

towards an individual

fashion statement/style.

With the range of core skills

developed as well as critical

thinking and creative

awareness skills instilled

during the first semester,

a design portfolio of a

fashion/textile collection

that is both marketable

and aesthetically appealing

for the fashion and textile

industry will be created.

Fashion BusinessThis subject aims to

provide students with both

an overview and insight

into the development of

fashion business trends in

the international fashion

industry, so that they have

a good understanding of the

various concepts of design

marketing and promotion

linked to the trends and

apply them accordingly.

Fashion TechnologyThis subject aims to develop

the awareness of students

on the current and emerging

technologies in the fashion

and textile industry. This

subject will help students

obtain first-hand experience

of the latest technologies

and real-life industry

practices so as to respond

to the changing demands

of the fashion industry.

PROGRAMME AIMS The primary purpose of the

programme is to provide

motivated and committed

students with opportunities

to pursue advanced-level

postgraduate education in

Fashion and Textiles and

related knowledge areas.

The programme helps

students to increase their

professional and personal

development through a

real life problem based

learning approach. The

underlying premise is to

nurture professionals who

can reach an advanced

understanding and mastery

of their chosen specialism

area of study, which are

vital and contributing

influences in realising their

career and personal goals

in Fashion and Textiles.

PROGRAMME CHARACTERISTICS There are two specialisms,

which have their own

distinct aims and

learning outcomes.

Fashion Merchandising

Upon the satisfactory

completion of the Fashion

Merchandising specialism,

students will be able to:

• demonstrate an in-depth

understanding of fashion

merchandising planning

and control by designing

effective operational and

strategic management

systems, and therefore

solving related problems

in multi-national

textile and clothing

businesses, and

• critically evaluate

different international

product measurements,

quality assurance and

compliance schemes.

As such, students can

adopt appropriate ones

to manage and ensure

supply processes and

quality performance.

Global Fashion Management

Upon satisfactory

completion of the Global

Fashion Management

specialism, students

will be able to:

• demonstrate a thorough

understanding of the

current globalising

fashion business

environment,

particularly in the

areas of design,

production, marketing

and management;

• apply analytical,

integrative and

proactive approaches

where appropriate

as effective team

members to identify

and analyse problems

in the global fashion

business, and derive

solutions for them; and

• apply the concepts

of social and ethical

responsibilities that are

found in the new world

order of global business.

PROGRAMME STRUCTUREThis programme offers two

specialisms (streams) and

units of study in the form

of credit-based subjects.

The unit size of a standard

postgraduate subject is

3 credits, which is the

building block and defined

in terms of student study

time and effort. The total

effort required of a student

on a three-credit subject is

about 140 student hours of

effort. It is recommended

that employed students

enrol in two subjects for

each semester. However,

the pace of study can be

an individual decision.

All of the subjects are

normally offered during the

day for full-time students,

and in the evening for part-

time students. A standard

subject is delivered in

twelve to thirteen classes

in each semester. Each

class is three hours in

length. In general, it is

recommended that students

complete the programme

in 1 year (full-time Fashion

Merchandising), 1.5 years

(full-time Global Fashion

Management), or 2 years

(part-time). The maximum

length of registration for

all students is 4 years.

NON-LOCAL APPLICANTSNon-local students who

enroll in part-time

postgraduate studies at

PolyU will likely be issued a

short-term multiple-entry

student visa. For non-local

applicants who are only on

a visitor or tourist visa,

PolyU can neither register

the applicants as a student

nor allow the applicants

to commence study until a

student visa is obtained.

Non-local students are not

eligible for government

grants and loans. They

should therefore ensure

that they have sufficient

funds for tuition fees,

accommodations and

other expenses, including

medical insurance. However,

non-local students who

are studying in a full-

time programme at the

degree level or above

with a study period of not

less than one academic

year will be allowed to

take up study-related

internships, part-time on-

to the Student Handbook

posted on the website of the

Academic Secretariat

(www.polyu.edu.hk/as) for

more details.

Non-local postgraduate

students are to arrange

for their accommodations

in Hong Kong. Given the

central location of the

University, students who

are living off campus

can still conveniently

travel to campus. Details

on visa applications,

immigration regulations,

health care, costs of living

and other non-academic

matters of concern of

non-local students will

be separately provided if

offered admission to our

programmes. A brief guide

has been prepared by the

Mainland and International

Student Services Office

(MISS) to help non-local

students make the best use

of the opportunities and

facilities available during

their stay at PolyU and in

Hong Kong. For self-arranged

accommodations, please

contact MISS at (852) 3400

2608 for guidance, or apply

for university-managed off-

campus housing (subject to

availability) at

www.polyu.edu.hk/hall/index.php/non-local-students/off-campus-housing.

MATURE APPLICANTSThose who have reached

the age of 25 years old on 1

September in the admission

year are considered

mature applicants. Mature

applicants may be admitted

without the stipulated

entrance qualifications,

successfully complete the

programme. Applications

will be considered on an

individual and exceptional

basis. This provision will

be automatically taken

into consideration where

appropriate, and it is not

necessary for applicants
