2020 closed as one of the most challenging years in Ergon history. However, Mr. Lampton built a solid foundation that will guide us for many years to come, in both good times and bad. His mission to MEET NEEDS, SUPPORT FAMILIES AND SERVE CUSTOMERS says very simply — but strongly — what we all set out to do every day at Ergon. Despite the chaos of this past year, I am proud that our mission as well as our strategic focus remained unchanged. Because we had been working on the right things, we were uniquely prepared to weather the storm of 2020 and live out our mission simultaneously. This year, our employees pulled together in times of great need: • The COVID-19 pandemic presented one of the greatest challenges in our history. During these trying times, the can-do spirit of the Ergon family and special culture that makes this company great came out in full force to steer us through rough waters and kept Ergon humming in a time of great distress. • Ergon employees also saw a need to help other companies navigate the pandemic and shared COVID-19 hygiene plans, procedures and learnings with industry associations, businesses and universities. Ergon employees also served selflessly to help victims of Hurricanes Laura and Sally. One group served over 4,700 meals to first responders. Countless volunteer hours by Ergon personnel brought relief efforts to both our impacted employees and the communities in which we serve. For us, the opportunity to serve others is why we do what we do. Of course, we want to be profitable, but we have always believed that our purpose is larger than that. We are blessed with a platform to give back to the people and communities that give us the ability to succeed. And we are incredibly proud of our employees for living out the mission of our company. It is easy to talk about during the good times, but our employees live it out during the challenging times. This unwavering commitment and dedication makes me proud to be part of this family business. JANUARY 2021 GOOD NEWS FOR THE FAMILY OF COMPANIES ergon.com ergontargetzero.com 100 Days, 100 Ways: Ergon’s Corporate Values at Work Doing Right: Ergon’s Ongoing Commitment to Sustainability Kris Patrick, COO Maintaining Our Mission I have had the pleasure of serving the Ergon family for 35 years, but I have to say the past year has been something to forget. In December 2019, the world heard for the first time of a disease running rampant in a province of China. In January 2020, the first confirmed COVID-19 case appeared in the U.S. Now, one year later, I can say emphatically that I, along with many of you, have “COVID fatigue.” The goal from the first time we became aware of COVID -19 was to protect the Ergon family and our operations. It has been a difficult journey, and opinions are wide ranging and strong. I frequently receive links from people with the latest news from social media, YouTube, etc. Much of it is conflicting — COVID is a hoax, COVID is this century’s Spanish Flu, masks help, masks are useless, sanitizing hands works, COVID isn’t transmitted by touch, vitamins help, vitamins don’t help, blood type matters, blood type does not matter (and not much you can do about it anyway), six feet is good enough for social distancing, social distancing needs to be at least 10 feet. So, how did we discern the path for the Ergon family of companies? We set our goal of protecting the Ergon family and its operations. Then we scoured medical sites for reliable information, met with medical professionals, talked with industry partners and prayed. Is our path too conservative, as many believe? One day we will know. Meanwhile, we selected the path that I believe, first and foremost, protects each employee of Ergon and their family. If COVID is as dangerous as some say, then we have minimized the risk of infection at work and home. If COVID is not as dangerous as some imagine, then we will still have done right by you and the communities we serve. While we await the day this pandemic is behind us and we can look back and evaluate the impact of our choices, I encourage you to find moments of joy and happiness. If you pray, pray. If you do not pray, then find things to be thankful for. Here’s one to start with: Our values and our culture have survived 66 years of events. They are what make us a strong company and a strong family. That is why I have remained here 35 years. One day, COVID will disappear. Life will return to normal. And we will still have our wonderful Ergon family and an exciting future ahead of us — Together and United. A GUIDE TO WINTERROAD TREATMENTS

SAFETY WITH SALT

During colder weather, local authorities may utilize special road treatments to keep key roadways from icing over and becoming hazardous to drivers, property and bystanders. Check out these interesting facts about these road treatments and be sure to make safety a driving force throughout your winter travels.

Main Ingredient: SaltSalt creates a phenomenon called Freezing Point Depression. It sounds fancy, but all it means is that the presence of salt makes water freeze at a lower temperature than the standard 0° C (32° F).

Crystal vs. CrystallizationSalt crystals actually inhibit the crystallization process that turns ice into water. A properly treated roadway can withstand temperatures as low as -5° C (about 23° F) without freezing over.

Traffic ... helps?Road treatments work best with moderate-to-heavy traffic present. The activity on the roadway aids in spreading and crushing the treatment mixture for maximum performance when and where it’s needed most.

Anti-Skid AggregateSometimes the salt is

mixed with an anti-skid aggregate. When the temperature falls below about 10° C (15° F), the salt and aggregate mix can actually create an ad hoc road surface using ice as the binder. Sure, it’s not as good as the surfaces Ergon creates, but it’ll do in a pinch ... of salt.

Leaving TRIR Behind This movement away from TRIR and injury rates is being seen in practice. Most notably, the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) announced that it would no longer use TRIR as a performance indicator for its Safety Achievement Award. Instead, they will use actual and potential injury severity to gauge members’ performance.

What it Means for Ergon What are we doing with this new information? Over the last year, Ergon has been positioned to capture safety data performance in a more meaningful way. Leading Indicators — like Leadership Engagement, Observations

and Learning Teams — are concepts being introduced that will make their way to a facility near you soon. In the meantime, it is still a federal requirement to report recordable injuries. But more important, our company-wide target is still ZERO. Zero Accidents. Zero Regrets. Thank you all for your dedication to this crucial aspect of our global operations.

Safety Statistics: The Tyranny of TRIR Over the past year, Ergon has participated in a research group that includes 120 companies in the oil and gas, power generation and delivery, commercial construction, and infrastructure industries along with top academics in safety science and engineering from the University of Colorado. The research from this

group, encompassing 17 years of safety performance data and 3.2 trillion man hours, has published its findings on the statistical invalidity and usefulness of injury rates as a performance indicator. The verdict: Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) is not a useful metric in the short term and is not a good indicator of whether or not a company is “good” or “lucky.” In addition, looking

at injury rates month to month is not a helpful picture of how an organization is performing. In fact, the research suggests at least 100 months of data or one billion man hours per year would be needed to provide a more accurate performance indication.

Key Takeaways from TRIR Research:• There is no discernible association between TRIR and fatalities.• The occurrence of recordable injuries is almost entirely random.• TRIR is not precise and should not be communicated to multiple

decimal points of precision.• In nearly every practical circumstance, it is statistically invalid to

use TRIR to compare companies, business units, projects or teams.

Human hands are as vulnerable as they are valuable. Because we use them every day to perform tasks big and small, we’re constantly exposing them to a variety of hazards — especially in the workplace. At the national level, with the exception of neck and back injuries, hand injuries account for more lost workdays than any other accident. What’s more, a study by the National Safety Council recently discovered that the cost of treatment per patient varies wildly, anywhere from $540 to $26,000.

Want to avoid the physical and financial toll of a hand injury? Get a firm grip on workplace safety.DO ...• Pay attention to where both hands are placed at all times while

working, especially when working with machinery.• Wear appropriate gloves to protect against particular hazards.• Stretch your hands and fingers from time to time to give tense or

tired muscles and tendons a chance to relax.• Protect your hands when working with

chemicals, hot substances, sharp objects and other common workplace hazards.

DON’T ...• Use your hands to feed material into

machines.• Use your hands to sweep up wood chips,

metal shavings, glass or other sharp objects.• Use strong solvents, chemicals or gasoline

to clean your hands.• Operate machinery or power tools under the

influence of alcohol or drugs, even some prescription drugs.

Choosing the Right PPE A key piece of PPE, the humble five-fingered glove is your last line of defense against hazards to your hands. Gloves should be selected based on a hazard assessment, should fit properly and should allow the person wearing them to still complete their tasks. Gloves can be rated against several specific hazards, including abrasions, cuts, punctures, impacts and chemical permeation.Kong Gloves Provided by Ergon All Ergon employees required to use safety gloves on the job should have already received a pair of Kong gloves provided as part of our ongoing Hand Safety Awareness Campaign. WALKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND:TOP5 WINTER SAFETY TIPS

FOR PEDESTRIANS

1. Wear brightly colored clothing, especially if visibility is limited and traffic is present.

2. Stay on the sidewalk or, if there is no sidewalk, walk as close to the shoulder as possible, always facing oncoming traffic.

3. Cross streets at crosswalks where drivers expect to stop — and always look both ways twice, exercising caution before walking carefully and purposefully across.

4. When the temperature is low enough for ice to form on roadways, allow drivers ample time and space to stop, turn or otherwise operate.

5. When you are driving, always keep gloves, a blanket and a raincoat or windbreaker in your car. An accident, dead battery or breakdown could leave you stranded, instantly transforming you from driver into ... pedestrian.

By Dr. Gaylon BaumgardnerExecutive Vice President, Technical Operations Asphalt & Emulsions

Thirty-two years since my first ever visit to Ergon’s

Mississippi headquarters, I still recall being impressed with the diversity of the company. Ergon’s strength in diversity is reinforced by an uncommon unity. We Are Together While diverse and involved in many niche market segments, the Ergon companies had and still have a synergy that makes the whole organization unique. Such examples of synergy can be seen not only within companies under each of our business segments, but across business segments as well. For example, Paragon and Resinall, Ergon’s Specialty Chemicals company, have been collaborating in order to provide technologies to aid Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions in offering engineered binders unique to the asphalt and emulsions markets. It is rare that you find the opportunity for such mutually beneficial collaboration among niche fields within one organization. We Are One Though Ergon remains a diverse group of interests, we are unified; we are one family; we are One Ergon. This has been prominent in our response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The synergy in Ergon has never been more apparent. From the quick response of Ergon management and their continued communication, to the efforts and cooperation of all employees — especially those on the front lines who helped keep the wheels of Ergon business turning — you all deserve accolades. It is this unity, this synergy, this family that make Ergon, Ergon.

Visit ergontargetzero.com and click on Toolbox Talks.

Most drivers know to exercise caution under winter conditions, but pedestrians face their fair share of winter hazards, too. You can avoid many of those hazards by observing the following safety tips:

On October 30, 2020, Ergon conducted a Halloween Costume Contest and donation event in support of the American Cancer Society. It was a crisp, cold day warmed by fun, laughter, and contributing to a good cause — and the goodwill didn’t stop there ...

Scaring & Caring at Mirror Lake Plaza

In December 2020, employees traded Halloween costumes for those of Santa’s elves to participate in another donation event, this time for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. This miraculous effort yielded hundreds of toy donations as well as a cash match of $15,204.17 from Ergon Corporate. Enjoy these photos — and congrats and thanks to all of those in the Ergon family who participated in these fun and very successful events.

We are pleased to announce that Ergon Terminaling Inc. (ETI) has completed five consecutive years with ZERO recordable injuries or illnesses. “Working toward this goal has prompted each ETI employee to constantly look for more ways to protect each other like the family that we are,” said Joel Pastorek, ETI President. “The fact that the ETI group has achieved this accomplishment amid a pandemic with so many additional precautions and potential

stressors is even more outstanding.” In addition to five years with zero recordables, ETI has also been awarded the ILTA Safety Excellence Award three years in a row, and the group is looking forward to celebrating year four in 2021. Please join us in congratulating ETI on a job well done, and let’s all continue to move forward with safety as our number one priority.

example, Ergon’s use of recycled materials in products produced by Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions, Crafco and Resinall, along with improved efficiency in our truck and boat fleets, displays our endeavors to Doing Right with Our Products. Ergon’s emphasis on safety through Target Zero and our efforts to ensure our employees are properly trained reflect our commitment to Doing Right by Our People. Reduction in greenhouse gases and waste generated, with renewed focus on reducing our energy intensity, demonstrates Doing Right for Our Planet. Ergon’s Board of Directors’ governance policies, Ergon’s Code of Conduct and our service to the communities in which we operate confirm that we are Doing Right through Our Principles. The Doing Right Launch Team is supported by the Ergon Board of Directors and executive management. We look forward to partnering with our stakeholders in

this work, including our customers and suppliers, government agencies and non-governmental organizations; our financial lenders, credit rating agencies, and underwriters; and finally, our employees, families and the communities around us. We are reminded that the philosophy of sustainability is not new to Ergon when we remember the words of Mr. Lampton when he said: “Ergon’s success is based on our ability to clearly understand the needs of our customers, both today and in the future.” This thought has been an integral part of who Ergon is for so many years, and we are excited to tell the Ergon sustainability story.

Contact your safety manager immediately if you have not received your gloves or if your gloves do not fit or function properly.Safety Videos and More on the Pipeline Access the hand safety video and more on the Ergon Pipeline by opening the Dynamic Signal app on your smartphone or visiting ergonpipeline.com.

Despite the chaos of this past year, I am

proud that our mission as well as our strategic focus remained unchanged. Because we had been working on the right things, we were uniquely prepared to weather the storm of 2020 and live out our mission simultaneously. This year, our employees pulled together in times of great need:• The COVID-19 pandemic presented one

of the greatest challenges in our history. During these trying times, the can-do spirit

of the Ergon family and special culture that makes this company great came out in full force to steer us through rough waters and kept Ergon humming in a time of great distress.

• Ergon employees also saw a need to help other companies navigate the pandemic and shared COVID-19 hygiene plans, procedures and learnings with industry associations, businesses and universities.

• Ergon employees also served selflessly to help victims of Hurricanes Laura and Sally.

▪ One group served over 4,700 meals to first responders.

▪ Countless volunteer hours by Ergon personnel brought relief efforts to both our impacted employees and the communities in which we serve.

Key Takeaways from TRIR Research:• There is no discernible association between TRIR and fatalities.• The occurrence of recordable injuries is almost entirely random.• TRIR is not precise and should not be communicated to multiple

use TRIR to compare companies, business units, projects or teams.

I have had the pleasure of serving the Ergon family for 35 years, but I have to say the past year has been something to forget. In December 2019,

the world heard for the first time of a disease running rampant in a province of China. In January 2020, the first confirmed COVID-19 case appeared in the U.S. Now, one year later, I can say emphatically that I, along with many of you, have “COVID fatigue.” The goal from the first time we became aware of COVID-19 was to protect the Ergon family and our operations. It has been a difficult journey, and opinions are wide ranging and strong. I frequently receive links from people with the latest news from social media, YouTube, etc. Much of it is conflicting

— COVID is a hoax, COVID is this century’s Spanish Flu, masks help, masks are useless, sanitizing hands works, COVID isn’t transmitted by touch, vitamins help, vitamins don’t help, blood type matters, blood type does not matter (and not much you can do about it anyway), six feet is good enough for social distancing, social

distancing needs to be at least 10 feet. So, how did we discern the path for the Ergon family of companies? We set our goal of protecting the Ergon family and its operations. Then we scoured medical sites for reliable information, met with medical professionals, talked with industry partners and prayed. Is our path too conservative, as many believe? One day we

will know.

Ergon recently formed a Doing Right Launch Team to help share the organization’s

sustainability story. Members have been pulled from across Ergon’s business units and Corporate Services, and the team is facilitated by the Product Stewardship Department. The team is challenged with establishing a platform to communicate Ergon’s Environmental Social Governance activities and publishing our first baseline, corporate-wide sustainability report in 2021. Our efforts are not a one-time project, but instead are an extension of Ergon’s long-term commitment to “Doing Right.” Over the past few years, the term “sustainability” has been increasingly heard and seen in our daily lives. A quick Google search reveals 848 million hits for the term. We may ask where sustainability came from and what it means, especially in relation to Ergon. While the phrase “sustainable yield” first appeared in a German forestry handbook in the early 1700s, the concept of sustainability began to gain traction in the 1970s. “Sustainable Development” was defined in the 1987 Brundtland Report as “the idea that human societies must live and meet their needs without compromising the

While sustainability was primarily driven by the environmental portion of ESG in the past, increased attention has been given to the social and governance parameters in the year 2020.

As Ergon outlined our four core values of Empowered Service, Purposeful Growth, Selfless Leadership and Respectful Relationships, we saw that ESG is simply a continuation of Ergon’s legacy, including the culture and values that define us: cleaner lube products, Target Zero, warm mix asphalt, organizational development, Healthy You! and mental health benefits, improved boat efficiency, hazardous waste reductions, employee training programs, community
