October – All month – Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Wear pink at least one day a week to support on-going research to find a cure. Take up a collection or have a fund-raiser to prepare for Relay-For-Life.

We’re off to a great start! By the end of this month, all school clubs will have had at least one meeting and some have even met their enrollment quotas!

Special thanks to Mr. Neil Wise for helping us with the shaved ice and flavored syrup.

Since some clubs experience organization delays in their enrollment campaigns, they have one last chance to try to meet their quotas and win a party during their November meeting. Deadline: October 31!

All teams managed to “Survive the Storm” by building lean-tos with nothing more than bamboo, cardboard and duct tape. Every lean-to held up to the powerful and wind and rain simulation.

Kudos to campers and counselors who made the TEAM: Alexis McCool, Aurora Young, Delaney Morgan, Anna White, Colin Donham, Ty Schaufele, K.J. Powell and Alan Kivett. Back row: Dusty Bedgood, David Peterson, Hager Fortenberry, and Counselors Agape Skinner, Adam Perritt, and Bethany Bowen.

Project Focus: Visual Arts

Is there anyone who doesn’t like a good arts and crafts project? When I get on Pinterest, I fall into a black hole and literally lose hours looking at all the great projects! We all have special interests that put our artistic talents to good use, and 4-H offers many opportunities to learn, practice and compete in artistic endeavors.

In October, some clubs offer the 4-H Great Pumpkin Contest and schools are filled with carved and decorated pumpkin characters to delight people of all ages. Totally optional and club-sponsored, it’s great fun!

Photography contests, like the Ag Expo Ag Photo contest in January and the new Shutterbug Showcase coming in March, will really get those cameras flashing.

In April we’ll have the Show Your Stuff Art Contest with a wide variety of art and craft categories to enter, like drawing, painting, duct tape, woodworking, recycled art and more! Stay up-to-date with dates and deadlines so you don’t miss any of these great contests!

Teen XtreMe Challenge Camp was a BLAST! We had an aMaZiNg three days at camp learning leadership, practicing teamwork and developing survival skills. There was fishing, archery, cooking, target practice, tent building and compass/GIS navigation.

What’s Missing From MyPlate? What’s happening Louisiana? The latest report ranks us LAST as the most obese state! Yes, it’s time we took a closer look at what’s on our plate and become more active to change those stats in a hurry!

4-H Teen Leaders will be working with the Wal-mart Foundation’s Fit4tHeFuture project to learn more about eating trends among their peers. We’ll also take part in an educational outreach to increase awareness and encourage others to make healthier dietary decisions. Teens will team teach a series of fun and fitness classes for younger kids to get them started early on living a healthy lifestyle. Join in the fun and learn how to get fit and stay fit for life!

If you are a teen 4-H member and would like to get onboard with this great outreach project, join us at the monthly Teen Leadership Meeting which is always held on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the

4-H office. Senior high 4-H clubs will also be participating in the peer surveys and analysis. There are many different jobs to do, from designing and distributing surveys, collecting online surveys, working as a team to teach younger kids, or recruiting other members to take part in special activities and events at schools and

community events. We need you! Contact the 4-H Office more details.
