Welcome to Community Spotlight on S66. I’m proud to announce that we are increasing the circulation of this magazine to 10,000 homes and businesses. This now includes Bramley, Sunnyside, Wickersley and parts of Flanderwell and Hellaby.
As the circulation continues to grow we still want to keep a community feel to the magazine. With this in mind it is important for you, the readers to keep sending us your comments and content for use. I believe that our new tagline “connecting you with your community” really captures what we are all about.
I spent the day at the Bramley Carnival at the beginning of September where I was really impressed with the atmosphere and real community spirit. I received some fantastic feedback from readers of Spotlight, of which I’m very grateful. This gave me a great reassurance of the need for this magazine.
If you would like to see a back issue of the magazine they are available online at www.communityspotlight.org.uk.

SPOT LIGHT On Bramley Parish Council
Don’t Forget To Mention SPOT LIGHT When You Call
Bramley Parish Council UpdateBramley Carnival 2011 was a huge success, and had a great turnout from local residents. Our thanks go out to all those who put in the hard work to make the event happen. The new Carnival Queen, Annabel Sheil did a great job on
the day, and we will be seeing more of her at events over the next year. This month we will continue our proles on Bramley Parish Councillors, with Councillor Dave Sayner.
Councillor Proles: Dave SaynerI moved to Rotherham in 1975 and have resided in Bramley since 1981. I am married with one daughter aged 13 and have a dog. My rst job was at Robert Jenkins which at that time was Rotherham’s largest private employer. Wherever I go in the world I always seem to meet someone who has a connection of sorts with the company. I now own P P Coatings Ltd a small powder coating company. I am a Rotherham United season ticket holder and like the rest of the fans am looking forward to the new ground and a return to the town. My hobbies include table tennis, 10 pin bowling both of which I play in leagues and I have been competition secretary of Rotherham table tennis for the last 5 years. I enjoy foreign holidays and have recently returned from Marrakech and Seville. I enjoy socialising and can often be seen in the local hostelries. Music has always been a passion and I have
an extensive collection. I enjoy live gigs but believe nowadays the venues are too large and impersonal. A rock gig at Sheeld City Hall was always a good atmosphere and you didn’t have to look at a big screen to see the artists.
I joined the council around 8 years ago to see if I could help the community and have been vice chairman for the last 5 years serving under 4 dierent chairmen, each with their own dierent styles and ideas, recently the council has undergone a major transformation and I believe for the better. We now have a younger set of councillors who have already shown a keenness to get stuck in and have a more hands on approach than most of their predecessors. We are a non political organisation and I believe that is the way a parish council should be. Although we are trying to improve relations with the borough council we will continue to do the best we can for our parishioners.
We are always looking for ways we can improve the village within our budget and are proud of the extra facilities we have brought in over the last few years. We are looking to nish o our projects in the cemetery by the end of 2011 and are looking at new projects for 2012. We welcome new ideas and would ask any parishioner with ideas to come to any Parish council meeting which is held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month between 6.30 and 7 pm.
“Banardos At Woodlaithes”Did you know Banardos have a store at the centre of Woodlaithes Village. As we go through the challenges of daily price rises it is sometimes hard
to make ends meet. Many people are now turning
towards their local Charity shops for much needed items of clothing and
everyday items.
Our store is open Mon- Sat 9.30 till 6.00pm and Sun 11am- 5pm. We oer a friendly atmosphere and a
wide range of new and nearly new merchandise.
So why not take a few minutes to come along and see us, you may be
surprised at what you nd.Kind Regards
Lana.

SPOT LIGHT On A Child’s First Pet
A Child’s First Pet –Guinea PigsSuki North
“Pleeease can I have a pet? I promise I’ll look after it properly and keep it clean!”I’m sure we’ve all heard this appeal. You realise you will be the one who ends up looking after it, don’t you? Give a lot of thought about your child’s rst pet. While older children may be responsible enough to provide the right care for an animal, younger kids need constant supervision.
Owning a pet is a fabulous experience for a child. It will form a happy and memorable part of their childhood. Also, a pet can help your child learn about responsibility and caring. However, most children’s rst experience of death is that of their beloved pet. Be prepared to deal with this heartrending but vital lesson.
Guinea pigs are a great rst pet. These chatty, intelligent rodents are easily tamed and very friendly. They rarely bite, love being handled and become extremely aectionate. Guinea pigs usually live for ve years, sometimes longer.
Guinea pigs can live outside or indoors. They can be nervous, so house them somewhere quiet. Their home should be safe, warm and easy to clean. A separate ‘bedroom’ is also required. Choose a large cage with a plastic base for indoors or a good sized hutch for outside. As guinea pigs are sensitive to temperature changes ensure the hutch is protected from the elements. Put in plenty of warm, hay bedding. Allow the guinea pig to exercise regularly under observation.
As natural grazers, guinea pigs need access to food and water at all times. Provide fresh
grass, hay and weeds such as dandelion each day. They also need a daily supply of vitamin C. Proprietary guinea pig pellets oer this as do leafy green vegetables like broccoli. Never feed citrus fruits though, as they cause diarrhoea. Root vegetables and fruit are not naturally part of a guinea pig’s diet so only feed a little each day. They adore cucumber, so use this to aid taming and as a treat.
Guinea pig nails and teeth grow continuously (- carefully clip nails every couple of weeks as required. Keep an eye on their teeth. The right diet should be enough and you can provide untreated wood to gnaw on, such as fruit tree twigs to help. Long-haired breeds need to be brushed daily to keep their coats neat.
You want more than one guinea pig? That’s ne, as long as they are both female. Two males, if not brought up together, will ght. And a male and female together will very soon become more than two…
You’ll discover that a guinea pig will quickly endear itself into in the family’s heart with their adorable purring and chirruping sounds, and gentle and inquisitive personality.

Don’t Forget To Mention SPOT LIGHT When You Call
We have a fundraising market stall at Factory Foods on Friday and Saturday where we offer great quality fruit and veg at fantastic prices.
We redistribute surplus food by diverting from potential waste and into needy communities. A key objective of our project is to redistribute healthy 5-a- day produce, in partnership with NHS Rotherham, this encourages healthier eating. In addition, we are in the process of distributing Food Standards Agency (FSA) leaflets which educate beneficiaries and equip them to make good food choices, e.g. ‘best before’ versus ‘use by dates’. Food AWARE are proud to support the 'Love Food Hate Waste' campaign.
The Rotherham Advertiser recently reported that Yorkshire's only dedicated centre for under-18s, the Leeds Children’s Heart Unit, is due for the axe to save around £500,000. Two Rotherham families inparticular whose children have been helped by the unit have spoken out about the possible closure and urge you to help by signing the petition at the above website.

We hate to waste food, money, packaging. Do you?
The ‘Best before’ dates are more about quality than safetly,
except for eggs. So when the date runs out it doesn’t mean that the
food will be harmful, but it might begin to lose its flavour and texture.

SPOT LIGHT On Don’t Be A Fuel Fool
Don’t Forget To Mention SPOT LIGHT When You Call
Don’t be a Fuel Fool!As the price of petrol soars to astronomical levels it makes nancial sense to conserve as much of it as possible. Try our ve fuel-saving tips.Don’t oor it! Hard acceleration dramatically increases fuel consumption. Accelerate gently and even larger cars will use much less petrol or diesel. Don’t speed Fuel consumption increases substantially once you drive at speeds above 60mph.Set the pressure Correct tyre pressure provides optimum road traction and more economical fuel use. Under-inated tyres ratchet up fuel costs (and are also very dangerous) so know your
pressures and check them regularly.Services make sense Skipping a service is false economy. A serviced engine will run more eciently, saving more fuel (and avoiding major mechanical problems) in the long run. Lose Weight! Well not you exactly, though saving money might be a good incentive to start that diet if you’re a little on the hefty side. Remove all extra weight from your car. Don’t leave golf clubs or large tool kits in the boot if they’re not being used. Remove roof racks and top boxes too, as they cause drag
and increase fuel consumption.Try driving normally for a month, keeping a note of how much fuel you use. Then follow our tips for a month and compare the dierence.

Take 5Five simple way to improve your health, by Suki North
Convenience Yourself: Make healthy meals and snacks. Plan your meals ahead to save running out of benecial foods. Fill your fridge with wholesome snacks ready to reach for when needed. Stock up on fruit, veg, nuts and seeds.
Inconvenience Yourself: Don’t buy any junk food then you can’t be tempted to eat it. Walk everywhere you can. If you commute, stop a little further away from work and walk the rest of the way. Walk up escalators. Don’t take the lift, climb the stairs.
Twice as Nice: Exercise while waiting for food to cook or the bath to ll. Use an exercise ball as a desk stool. Turn packing your groceries into cupboards into an exercise routine; those tins can double as weights. Stretch while watching TV.
Don’t Short-term Diet: Short-Term or fad Diets don’t work. Change your lifestyle instead. This is a more permanent solution than a short term diet. Join an exercise class for extra incentive. Think of it as a commitment to a healthy life. There are many organisations such as Slimming World and Weight Watchers that encourage long-term healthy lifestyle changes. Why not see how they can help?
Don’t Give Up: If you slip back into your old ways, don’t beat yourself up. Think about why it happened, take steps to deal with the cause dierently in future and move forward.

Garden ViewThis month - Lawns
In the interests of full disclosure I need to be honest with you here. I don’t actually have a lawn. I have grass. Sometimes it’s a bit mossy and sometimes there are sprinklings of daisies. As I also have two small boys and dog it often looks a bit threadbare. I used to have a lawn, sometime in the dim distant past, before children, pets and environmental ethics got in the way. The problem is that velvety green lawns require a lot of hard work. They are also particularly tricky to achieve if like me, you now garden organically as much as possible. A weed-free lawn is nigh-on impossible to achieve without the use of selective weed killers. It’s also tricky to achieve if you are trying to conserve water, as many of us are now.I do admit that there are occasions when I mourn the death of my beautiful swathe of green, but on the whole I’ve learned to love and work with what I have.Even workaday lawns need some care and attention, especially at this tail-end of the gardening year. A little TLC now will ensure that it has a head-start in spring.First spend a bit of time raking your grass with a wire-toothed spring rake. This drags out all the dead grass and moss. It’s called scarifying and I’ve always suspected that this is because the lawn
looks scarifyingly bad after you’ve done it!Don’t panic though, it has to look worse before it looks better. The next task is to stab it all over with a garden fork. Push the fork in about 4-6 inches / 10-15cm and wiggle it about to relieve compaction. If your soil is clay-like, which mine isn’t, it’s good to sweep sharp sand into the holes to improve long term drainage. Now I know it looks a bit bald and sad at this point, but it’s worth giving it a cut so that it’s about 1 inch / 2.5cm high. Don’t mow it too short. One week later apply a water-on lawn food. If you’re not organic you can buy combined food and moss killers. If some of the patches look very bare, prick them lightly with a garden fork and reseed them with a hard-wearing grass mix. Finally when April comes around, apply a lawn fertiliser (which can contain a weed killer if you’re not organic) and start to mow regularly. Apply another top-up feed in June.By mowing once a week the grass will thicken, and although you might still get a few daisies here and there, your grass will be looking more lawn-like. And if it wouldn’t pass muster at Wimbledon who cares...daisies are really very pretty owers.

At The Carnival
Thank You, Thank You and Thank You to everyone who called to say
Hello at our rst major FUNdraising event at the Bramley Carnival. It was a fantastic event which brought the community together. Our Prize Every Time Tombola brought wows of disbelief to people of all ages with the amazing treasures found inside the skilfully wrapped packages as crowds gathered grasping their pound coins desperate to get their hands on some fantastic stocking llers for Christmas.
Our own real Lion was the star of the show bringing smiles of joy to the little ones faces as he braved the heat and mingled in the crowds waving, shaking hands with his freshly
manicured paws and shining nose, giving hugs and cuddles to children of all sizes with parents clicking away on their camera phones.
Message in a BottleBut it was not all about fundraising, we were also there with our display stands explaining the vital work we do. Scores of people took away our life saving Message in a Bottle which is aimed at assisting the local emergency services when they are called out to the elderly, vulnerable or those living alone, by providing vital information on that person. The scheme is strongly supported by both the Emergency Services and the Health Care Profession
IT WORKS LIKE THIS:Anyone can use the small plastic bottle to store personal information about themselves which could be needed in an emergency such as –
· Personal details· Next of kin or relatives to contact· Allergies and regular medications· Doctor’s details and medical information
The emergency services are fully aware of the scheme and look for the ‘Green Cross’ sticker inside the front door of the house which lets them know that the information can be found in the bottle in the refrigerator. EASY! Bottles and forms are
available FREE from us so give us a call today on 07505 914 080 or email us [email protected]. It could and is proven to save lives.
Coming Up...Our next big FUNdraising event is a “Family Fun Halloween Evening” on Thursday 27th October at The Three Horse Shoes in Wickersley. This promises to be a FUN lled evening for all the family with great entertainment and a Pie and Pea supper. Tickets are £4 each or £12 for a family of four, so get in touch before they are sold out on the above number. We have more fantastic events lined up throughout the year so please keep a look out for us and keep up-to-date on our website www.bwlions.org.uk and also via Facebook. Don’t forget, please feel free to come to one of our meetings to see the fantastic work we do, it’s open to everyone aged 18 and over and your input could be vital for the area we serve. We meet on the rst and fourth Thursday of each month at the Three Horse Shoes in Wickersley at 8.00pm where you’ll get a warm and friendly welcome and a whole lot better sitting in front of the television watching the repeats.
About LionsLions meet the needs of local communities and the world. Members of our volunteer organisation in 206 countries and geographic areas are dierent in many ways, but share a core belief – community is what we make it.Ready to Help!Whenever a Lions club gets together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. That's because we help where help is needed – in our own communities and around the world – with unmatched integrity and energy. Our 46,000 (now 46,001 with Bramley and Wickersley) clubs and almost 1.4 million members make us the world's largest service club organisation. We're also one of the most eective. We get the job done. Everywhere we work, we make friends. With children who need schoolbooks, with seniors who need transportation and with people we may never meet.
We're led by talented, dedicated volunteer leaders from around the world. And, we're supported by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), which helps to fund Lions humanitarian projects.

Beautiful Burgers
Ingredients• 1kg minced beef• 1small onion, nely chopped• 4tbsp fine bread crumbs• 1 egg, lightly beaten• 1red chilli, finely chopped (optional)• 1tsp salt• 1tsp of your favourite mustard or horse radish sauce• Black pepper to season• Cloves garlic, crushed
Makes 8 good-sized burgers
MethodPlace the beef in a large bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Mix it all together by hand until just combined. Divide the mixture into eight and roll each portion into a ball, then atten to make the burger shape. You want to leave it about 2.5cm / 1 inch thick so it stays moist when cooked. The burgers can now be cooked either on a griddle pan or non-stick frying pan with a drop of oil, or even a BBQ. Pre-heat the frying pan, griddle pan or BBQ to a medium heat, so that the burgers seal and don’t stick.Cook the burgers for about 5 minutes on each side, turning them once. They should be cooked through with no pink bits.Serve in a good quality bun with loads of salad and relish and maybe a slice of cheese (Stilton takes them to a whole new level).

Cousins Slim Down Together!!There were celebrations all round last month, when cousins Rebecca and Georgina were both voted ‘Woman of the Year’ at the Slimming World Groups they attend. Georgina attends the WIckersley Group and Rebecca attends the Treeton group.‘Woman of the Year’ is an annual award held at every Slimming World group, it’s a chance for other members to vote for the people who inspire them through their success. So as you can image they were both delighted to be winners. Rebecca and Georgina have both brought friends and family along to join group and share in their success. It really is a family aair for these two!
RebeccaI joined slimming world back in August 2010 and never thought that I would be where I am today. So far I have lost 4 stone 5 pounds at a steady pace and nd it so easy to keep it o. As everyone started to see how fantastic I was looking and how easy it was to do many of my friends and family joined Slimming world. In
particular my cousin Georgina, she joined in February this year and is only 2 and a half pounds behind me having lost 4 stone 2 and a half pounds. Joining the gym has made such a dierence to our lives
Just recently this year I moved groups to Treeton from Wickersley but our friendly competition still continues each week, and we were both voted Woman of the Year for 2011 in our groups. It’s a fantastic feeling and such achievement for us both.
If we can do it then so can anybody.
GeorginaSince joining slimming world in February 2011, and following food optimising, my life has changed as I have lost over 4 stone. Before, I found it hard to go out with friends, taking photos and I never did any exercise as I felt too big and self-conscious of my body and how others view me. It felt like people were talking behind my back and everyone was staring at me. After losing 6 pounds in my rst week I felt as though I was heading in the right direction, and as the pounds turned into stones my life truly did change. I joined the gym and now go out with friends a couple of times a week. I have also joined a Zumba, body combat and salsacise class and do swimming sessions weekly. I now feel a new person that oozes ambition, personality and condence.
If this sounds like you, and you would like to nd out more about Slimming Worlds exible eating plans then come along to a group to nd out what it’s all about.

SPOT LIGHT On Autumn Fair
Autumn FairMake the most of October with Sue Blain
October is a month of change. We prepare for the winter at the same time as appreciating all this month has to oer. The startling range of colours from yellows, oranges and reds, beckon us, replacing any sunshine we may be missing. They encourage long, healthy walks in the woods, or maybe blackberry picking or tidying the garden. Even on cloudy days natural light stimulates glands that control the release of hormones, linked to our moods and emotions. So even if you feel low or tired, wrap up well and go outside, whatever the weather. The exercise and fresh air are guaranteed to cheer you up and you’ll be boosting vital Vitamin D levels too. The clocks go back at the end of the month unfortunately. Actually I’m hoping they won’t! Sign up for the “Lighter Later” campaign, set up by 10:10, a pressure group pushing for carbon reduction and backed by RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Assuming they do go back, go to bed earlier and rise with the sun rather than sticking to your usual bedtime hours. Early morning exercise, anyone? Surely that’s better than a walk in the dark! Prepare the house for winter. Check for draughts and hidden dust and moulds, another cause of respiratory problems and easily removed using tea tree oil. Even though it may be cold outside, open the windows for ten minutes each day to air the house. Plants
such as palms, ivy, peace lily, African violets and spider plants will help improve the atmosphere. I recommend B.C. Wolverton’s book. “How to Grow Fresh Air”.Try a gentle detox to help strengthen the immune system and then nurture yourself with baths instead of showers, candles to brighten dull rooms, extra cushions on the sofa and by adding warming spices to meals and hot drinks. Finally, the best thing about autumn is the harvest of bright berries, local apples and pears and the huge range of fresh root vegetables, from humble turnips to the enormous pumpkins awaiting Halloween. Now is the perfect time to stock up on healthy carotenoids, the antioxidants found in orange fruit and vegetables. Try making roasted vegetable soup, using a varying mixture of carrots, sweet potatoes, parsnips, butternut squash, turnips and swede. Toss vegetable chunks in olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt and roast for about half an hour in a medium oven, then blend with chicken or veg stock. Make a large amount, freeze portions and defrost in the morning, ready for the evening. Add dierent warming spices and herbs for variety. Thick soups like these are really lling and also slimming. You’ll nd numerous pumpkin recipes and
healthy fun snacks to help celebrate Halloween on the internet and don’t forget the n u t r i e n t - r i c h pumpkin seeds, delicious and chewy, whether eaten raw, sprouted or roasted.

Hospital Babylon – Imogen Edwards-JonesIt’s no secret that Imogen Edwards-Jones’ ‘Babylon’ books have attracted a huge cult following: they are easy to read and impossible to put down. Her latest oering, Hospital Babylon, follows the highly successful formula she has established and ticks all the right boxes. Told by a nameless narrator, it covers 24 hours in the life of a
doctor in the A&E department of a busy hospital, dealing with the mundane, the extraordinary, the hilarious and the tragic. All the books are based on research and interviews with insiders, then condensed down into a single day. In Hospital Babylon, this includes two births, a number of deaths, a series of bizarre injuries and some sadly commonplace tragedies, as well as rather a lot of irting, drug-taking and workplace banter. The pace is relentless – A&E never empties, and as the sta battle to keep waiting times to a minimum, tempers often fray and split-second decisions need to be made. Some cases move in and out quickly and smoothly, while others, like 15 year old Marsha, who doesn’t know she is pregnant until her baby starts to arrive, or elderly June, who slips in the rain and breaks her hip, are likely to stay with the reader for some time. There is a serious message here about the constraints placed on sta by reform of the NHS, and about the workload that is still expected of a junior doctor. If nothing else, it will certainly put you o being ill around the rst Wednesday in August when sta traditionally move on to new placements, and a new set of junior doctors arrive fresh-faced and more than a little confused.
As with the other books in the series this is not for the faint-hearted, in places it is stomach turning. But like A&E, the doors keep opening to admit more and more people and we move relentlessly on – and I guarantee you will keep turning the pages as they do.
Starting School – Janet and Allan AhlbergThere are a plethora of books available to help a child through the mysteries of starting school for the very rst time, but this is easily one of the best out there as you would expect from the Ahlbergs. Simply set out and of course beautifully illustrated, it starts as Gavin and Errol, Sophie and Sushma and their classmates make their way to school for their very rst day. All of the milestones are shown: nding the toilets; handing in dinner money; exploring the classroom – with little description, allowing parents to talk to their child about each one. What really makes this stand out though, is the fact that it goes beyond the rst day into the second day, the rst week, the next week and all the way up to the end of term and the Christmas play. And the children aren’t always happy, sometimes they are sad, or sleepy or grumpy, as children are. A whole range of new experiences is shown, and every child will be able to nd themselves somewhere in these pages.A beautiful book, ideal for sharing and reading out loud – again and again and again.

Last Month’s Winner...Unfortunately nobody got a correct answer, so the prize rolls over to this month. Last month’s answer was 23.
Set Yourself FreeIn his second article about home wireless networks Tom Hancock looks at how to set one up.
Let’s get one thing straight. Setting up a home wireless network is something you can do yourself but it’s important to be realistic. If you’re the sort whose eyes glaze over at the mention of computers, and you think that the pocket calculator is the pinnacle of 20th century tech, right above the ball point pen then it may be better to recognise your limitations and call in an expert!
However, if you like gadgets and are keen to try go right ahead. First prepare everything. You will most likely have an all in one modem/ router / wireless adapter. This should come with everything you need: a micro-lter, a telephone cable, a power supply and an ethernet cable. If your computer does not have built-in wireless you'll also need a wireless adapter.
You also need your broadband account details. These should include a username and password but may also have some details about encapsulation or multiplexing. You don't need to know what these mean but you should ask yourbroadband supplier what values you will need to type into your router.
Once everything is in place, follow the setup instructions that came with your system. These will take you through the process step-by-step. They will tell you in which order you should plug things together and when to type certain valuesin.
At some point you’ll need to plug your computer into the router using the ethernet cable. If you've got a laptop this won’t be a problem, but if you're using a desktop you might nd it easier to unplugthe router from the telephone socket and set it up beside your computer. You can then set up the wireless connection so you no longer need the ethernet cable.
Then it’s a matter of plugging the router back into the telephone line and nishing the set up w i r e l e s s l y . Usually setup
is fairly straightforward and you'll quickly have a wireless network to which you can connect all your devices. You'll have to set up a network name (your SSID) and a security password but these are all you'll need to connect each device.
Now if you've had dealt with computers before you may think that this all sounds a bit too easy to be true, and you may be right! Networking computers can be a tricky process, even for people with experience. If you've done everything exactly as the manual says and your system still doesn’t it’s time to call in an expert. Don’t be tempted to ddle. It’s tempting, but if you don't know what you're doing you can make things a lot worse.
Sharing your Internet connection over a wireless network is a great thing to do. Suddenly you no longer have to sit in one place to surf the web. Use your iPad sitting on the sofa or surf the web on your smart phone in the garden and set yourself free.
